First the expected irony: I'm the one with the ultra frequent handwashing, the Purell wipes, the sanitizing gel, the constantly sanitizing. We sanitize everything in any room we stay in, including remote controls, light switches, drawer handles, random people passing by...etc
So, that being said, I think I picked it up in the parks before we boarded our 4 night on the wonder (the Feb 7-11 trip). According to the Doc the next day, all it takes is someone (carrying Norovirus) sneezing or coughing close by. Close proximity is the big problem, which is why cruise ships seem to get hit so much. So much for my false sense of sanitary security.
Day one of our cruise, we boarded at 11:00 a.m., had a small lunch at Parrot Cay, got our Palo ressies, explored the ship, went to the sail-away party, went to the show, went to Palo and ate the most delicious dinner... I was fine--until about 2 a.m. the next morning when I revisited my entire dinner from Palo. I thought, "maybe part of getting older means I'll start getting seasick..." (I was so hopeful that was it). But then, I never get seasick...
So, nope. (Into day two now) About 2 hours later, I had the "other end" of the virus to worry about, and it was official.
I was too sick to make it to the Med Center, so a VERY nice PA came to our stateroom at about noon, and gave me the miracle shot of Phenergen and a couple of Immodium. That really helped! I sent my partner out to enjoy the ship and her excursion in Nassau. When she came back that afternoon, she went with me to the med center, which is pretty sparse, but the staff are very kind.
I was asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire about where I'd been and what I'd eaten the last few days. The doctor seemed to feel so sad for me because even though I felt better, he had to quasi-quarantine me for the next 48 hours. My partner had no symptoms, so she was not quarantined (for which I am profoundly grateful). We had a verandah stateroom, which was a blessing because I could sit outside and get fresh air.
FYI, if you are quarantined, you are very politely checked up on every couple of hours. Guest Services called often to see if I needed anything, and they went out of their way to make me comfortable (while making sure I was still in the room
) They offered free laundry service, refunded our excursion money and spa money, we weren't charged for the PA room visit, and we were offered every video and board game under the sun (mostly I just slept or sat on the verandah.)
By day three, I felt tons better, and room service allowed us to order anything we wanted from the dining room menus. I got a lovely note from our head server. I was very sad that we couldn't get our Pirate pics on Pirate night, but was just grateful to be feeling better.
I said I was "quasi quarantined" because I was allowed to get off the ship for CC once I was symptom free for 24 hours (2:00 PM CC day). The Doc said I could go to the CC beach for a few hours, but I was told I was to go right back to my stateroom once I reboarded. I made sure I took an empty elevator and went to the gangway, where i was "denied disembarking for medical reasons." I told them the doc said I could go at 2:00, so they called him for verification. Of course, he said I could go. It was kind of embarrassing, but I understand why they have to do it. I'm so grateful for that small reprieve. CC was wonderful. I went to Serenity Beach (my partner was already there), and it did me a world of good.
The last day of sailing, my quarantine ended at 2:00 pm, and I did my best to stay away from big crowds (I'd already seen Dreams twice, so we sat away from people and saw The Princess and the Frog) My partner went to guest services because I'd forgotten to take my photo frame down the first day for character sigs. Guest services was more than happy to help, and they had the frame back in our stateroom by dinner time. It had all the characters sigs on it, and it is so cute!
yeah, I'm sure I could have sneaked out at one point or another, but I can assure you, I was a VERY good little doo-bee, and followed the Doc's orders to the letter. I left ONLY when I was told I was allowed to and not a MINUTE before. The reason? I would never wish this on anyone.
It's not the way I want to spend a vacation, but I am so grateful for so many kind people who not only empathized, but bent over backwards to help us make the most of the situation.
Wishing you all a safe and HEALTHY cruise!

For future info: I was told to take probiotics for 2 weeks before and during the cruise to help boost my immunity in my gut...I also sprayed down everything in our room, etc...but did all I could to make sure my immune system was strong before leaving.
As I said, we are avid handwashers, sprayers, wipe-downers, etc. I'm going to take that probiotics thing under advisement for the future!! I'm so glad Vonna was healthy, and sincerely hope I didn't unknowingly pass anything on to anyone else.
