First the expected irony: I'm the one with the ultra frequent handwashing, the Purell wipes, the sanitizing gel, the constantly sanitizing. We sanitize everything in any room we stay in, including remote controls, light switches, drawer handles, random people passing by...etc :lmao:

So, that being said, I think I picked it up in the parks before we boarded our 4 night on the wonder (the Feb 7-11 trip). According to the Doc the next day, all it takes is someone (carrying Norovirus) sneezing or coughing close by. Close proximity is the big problem, which is why cruise ships seem to get hit so much. So much for my false sense of sanitary security.:scared1:

Day one of our cruise, we boarded at 11:00 a.m., had a small lunch at Parrot Cay, got our Palo ressies, explored the ship, went to the sail-away party, went to the show, went to Palo and ate the most delicious dinner... I was fine--until about 2 a.m. the next morning when I revisited my entire dinner from Palo. I thought, "maybe part of getting older means I'll start getting seasick..." (I was so hopeful that was it). But then, I never get seasick...

So, nope. (Into day two now) About 2 hours later, I had the "other end" of the virus to worry about, and it was official. :sick:I was too sick to make it to the Med Center, so a VERY nice PA came to our stateroom at about noon, and gave me the miracle shot of Phenergen and a couple of Immodium. That really helped! I sent my partner out to enjoy the ship and her excursion in Nassau. When she came back that afternoon, she went with me to the med center, which is pretty sparse, but the staff are very kind.

I was asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire about where I'd been and what I'd eaten the last few days. The doctor seemed to feel so sad for me because even though I felt better, he had to quasi-quarantine me for the next 48 hours. My partner had no symptoms, so she was not quarantined (for which I am profoundly grateful). We had a verandah stateroom, which was a blessing because I could sit outside and get fresh air.

FYI, if you are quarantined, you are very politely checked up on every couple of hours. Guest Services called often to see if I needed anything, and they went out of their way to make me comfortable (while making sure I was still in the room:rotfl:) They offered free laundry service, refunded our excursion money and spa money, we weren't charged for the PA room visit, and we were offered every video and board game under the sun (mostly I just slept or sat on the verandah.)

By day three, I felt tons better, and room service allowed us to order anything we wanted from the dining room menus. I got a lovely note from our head server. I was very sad that we couldn't get our Pirate pics on Pirate night, but was just grateful to be feeling better.

I said I was "quasi quarantined" because I was allowed to get off the ship for CC once I was symptom free for 24 hours (2:00 PM CC day). The Doc said I could go to the CC beach for a few hours, but I was told I was to go right back to my stateroom once I reboarded. I made sure I took an empty elevator and went to the gangway, where i was "denied disembarking for medical reasons." I told them the doc said I could go at 2:00, so they called him for verification. Of course, he said I could go. It was kind of embarrassing, but I understand why they have to do it. I'm so grateful for that small reprieve. CC was wonderful. I went to Serenity Beach (my partner was already there), and it did me a world of good.

The last day of sailing, my quarantine ended at 2:00 pm, and I did my best to stay away from big crowds (I'd already seen Dreams twice, so we sat away from people and saw The Princess and the Frog) My partner went to guest services because I'd forgotten to take my photo frame down the first day for character sigs. Guest services was more than happy to help, and they had the frame back in our stateroom by dinner time. It had all the characters sigs on it, and it is so cute!

yeah, I'm sure I could have sneaked out at one point or another, but I can assure you, I was a VERY good little doo-bee, and followed the Doc's orders to the letter. I left ONLY when I was told I was allowed to and not a MINUTE before. The reason? I would never wish this on anyone.

It's not the way I want to spend a vacation, but I am so grateful for so many kind people who not only empathized, but bent over backwards to help us make the most of the situation.

Wishing you all a safe and HEALTHY cruise! pixiedust:

Sad to hear about your experience. Two years ago my wife had the same exact thing happen on our 7 day western. I definitely learned the for better or worse aspects of marriage that night. The next day I got to take the kids to Key West on my own and she hung back and slept. We probably should have reported it but on a 7 day with the kids she wanted to try to get better. She eventually did and we slowly made it back to normal activities but needless to say her appetite was small for the next few days. She had salmon the first night at dinner and to this day she still can't eat it again. Luckily, as in your case, non of the rest of us got it either so maybe it was just something she ate. I'm glad you got to at least get out a little and you're right she said if we wouldn't have had a verandah room she would have been in much worse shape the time she spent in the cabin. Did you buy trip insurance? I've heard they will reimburse a percentage for cases like yours.

Here's another irony. I always get the trip insurance. I booked this cruise late in the game, and I'm not sure if I wasn't clear, wasn't heard, or if it was not possible at that late date, but I found out a couple of weeks after booking that I didn't have it. :confused3

I was surprised and upset, and got a very chilly response from the agency, but it was too late by then anyway. Sigh. I don't know how much I would have gotten back, but I'll just make sure that I never use that agency again. Not because I didn't get the Trip Insurance, but because they reacted as if they just didn't care.

I don't want to say which agency it was, but it rhymes with Breams Brunlimited.:rotfl:

The Norovirus itself is highly resilient to most hand sanitizers on the market, due to the very tough outer coating of the virus. Only the action of rubbing your hands under running water, which actually dislodges the viruses from the skin, is truely effective.

There are some sanitisers available on the market that claim to kill the virus, but these are very expensive (3 to 4 times the cost of normal hand sanitisers) and their effectiveness is disputable.

And even very frequent handwashing isn't a guarantee. As I said, the Doc told me that the virus is not just spread from surfaces--it is airborne. I don't know much about viral livelihood, but I found out the hard way that all those preventative measures I was taking didn't really matter. I was susceptible, was exposed, and got sick.

NEWSFLASH: :scared1:I'm just hearing on the news that Celebrity has a huge outbreak!

I had no idea you had gotten ill, I wondered why I didnt see you around much. So sorry to hear that.

So sorry to hear you were ill!! :( For future info: I was told to take probiotics for 2 weeks before and during the cruise to help boost my immunity in my gut...I also sprayed down everything in our room, etc...but did all I could to make sure my immune system was strong before leaving.

I'm glad you have such a positive outlook and glad we got to meet before you got sick

So, since you didn't have travel insurance, I assume you had to pay for the care that you received from medical?

I'm just grateful to have had the good experiences I did have, and was able to meet you all. :goodvibes As I said, we are avid handwashers, sprayers, wipe-downers, etc. I'm going to take that probiotics thing under advisement for the future!! I'm so glad Vonna was healthy, and sincerely hope I didn't unknowingly pass anything on to anyone else. :scared1: That is my worst nightmare.

Hope your cruise was fabulous!!!

Thank you for your kind words! It was so fun meeting everyone! I read somewhere that your kiddo got sick later on. If it's what I had, I really feel his pain! I hope your trip wasn't impeded!

We went on to WDW for a few days and had a really great time. I still tried to be careful-- I was afraid of giving anyone anything, and I was equally afraid of getting something else, since my immune system was so taxed. So far, so good!
:goodvibes
