I am 51 and have been on birth control pills for at least 24 years. My doctor said I could stay on them on more year which ends in June. I was taking them 3 months straight so I had no period but when I had a period it was really heavy. I finally got tired of that and thought I would just stay off the pill and let my body just readjust/reset. Bloodwork says I am in menopause by the way. Well, after a heavy period 4 weeks ago I went about a week with nothing then I have had spotting to heavy bleeding since. I finally got tired of it and agreed to go on hormone replacement. He put me on Premarin 1.25 every day and Provera 10 days then off the rest of the month. I started them yesterday afternoon after I picked them up from the pharmacy and took again this morning. So far so good, LOL. No spotting. I hope it works that fast.

My question is have any of you had experience with HRT? What did you take? I really don’t want to hear all the nightmare stories. I have read all of those and feel that those women with good responses tend to not report that. Anyone out there really pleased they took the meds? Other than the irregular bleeding I have had no other symptoms and feel fortunate for that. How long were you on the meds? I am hoping I won’t have to be on them more than a year and if I start gaining weight I will get off of them.

I'm in perimenopause and take Bioidentical hormones.
Best thing I ever did for myself.

I am estrogen dominant so I need more Progesterone than estrogen and the Bioidentical hormones are compounded specifically for each patient, according to what that patient needs. They test you to see exactly what needs to be in your cream. The Premarin is more of a "one size fits all" pill and not tailored for each individualized patient.

If you don't get relief from the Premarin, look into BHRT- it's wonderful.

You have to decide if you are willing to take hormones. If you are in menopause then, yes, things will be a bit wonky for a bit(especially after being on birth control) and them the period goes away. Is it fun, nope, but I'm not one to delay the inevitable with replacing hormones that are naturally changing through the menopause process.

Thanks for the replies. I hate to take medicine and fought this for 2 years because I really didn't mind the birth control pills. The only problem with them was every 3 months when I did have a period it was a doozy. I thought staying off of everything would fix it but nope. I got tired of spotting every day. Day 4 of the HRT and no spotting. Whoohoo!!! I may just skip the provera next month or delay it to see if the spotting starts back up. Honestly this is the only problem I have had. No hot flashes. No vejayjay dryness. Moodiness...well that is normal, LOL.

You need a new gynocologist....

I would not be taking Premarin...
And I would not be taking that cycle.

Due to health issues that caused me to be menopausal. No real female hormones. I have been on HRT for many, many, years.

I take FemHRT... I actually take the generic now, as the original was expensive, and generic is now available.

This is basic, ongoing, HRT, with no periods.

There are SO many better options than Premarin.
Went off of that decades ago. Best thing I ever did.

You really might want to find a better and more understanding and progressive gynocologist, who will consider prescribing this type of HRT for a woman your age.

I am about your age.
My GYNO mentioned weaning me off my HRT.
NO WAY.
If it becomes necessary, I will also try to go find another gynocologist who will continue to prescribe this.

JoBird.

I'm looking into this but there are only a few Dr. in my state and the one I looked into charges 3500$ up front! Creep!

What tests did you ask for and what type of Dr. did you see.

I'm ready! But I want to go in ready to tell them what I want instead of them trying to 'figure' out what I need.

I used to be given Provera to make me have a period. It never occurred to me that it could be given to me again in menopause.

I did do my research when he first wanted to put me on HRT a year ago. None of the options are perfect but I have a low risk for heart attack, stroke, breast cancer. I plan to be on this only a year. Actually I go back in June and will talk to him then about what other options I have. For one thing the Premarin is expensive. I do have a health savings account to pay for it but geez, $94 a month. I was not prepared for that when I went to the pharmacy. I will print out a coupon next time to save a little.

The only problem I am having is the spotting. And I could live with that if it wasn't every day. Got tired of that really fast. I have had periods since I was 13. I think I have had enough. I plan to be on this only a year.

I would caution you to be careful in stopping the Provera without your dr.'s knowledge.

Did they test your estrogen and progesterone levels to see what you are deficient in?

The Premarin is for Estrogen, the Provera is for Progesterone.

If the dr doesn't know your exact levels of either of those hormones in your body, then they can't say for certain which hormone is causing the bleeding.

That's the only bad thing about taking the HRT pills- they can't give you specific amounts of either to "fill your tank" so to speak, with what your body is specifically lacking.

If you are progesterone deficient and stop the Provera you will bleed more.
Did they test your Free testosterone, DHEA, TSH (Thyroid), Estradiol?

These are all tests that should have been done in order to get the "complete" picture of what your body is lacking, not just the FSH level to see if you were in menopause. (Which is what most regular dr.'s will test, and not the others)

If the dr just blindly tested one of these, or worse- none of these, and wrote a script for the Premarin/Provera, then I would be concerned that I wasn't getting the right drugs for what I lacked.

Holycow--
The above tests are what they should be testing you for.
The dr that charges $3500, does that include your compounded medicine? You can get the cream from a pharmacy like Women's International for pretty inexpensive, depending on what your dr prescribes. I pay around $40 a month.
Insurance does not cover compounded medicines.

The dr.'s visit probably covers your labs, but you can get labs done at www.lef.org/goodhealth

This is the lab that Suzanne Somers recommends. The company is called Life Extension.

IF you are in perimenopause and not menopause, your levels will change thru the month, depending on your cycle so it might not be completely accurate. That's where a good dr comes in- they know what to look for bc symptoms of Estrogen excess or Progesterone excess are very different.

If you are in Menopause, the labs will continue to change but at a different rate. A good dr will test you regularly for your levels. My dr is constantly tweaking my cream bc I am constantly changing.
My dr has been doing bioidentical hormones for 20+ years. He was a regular gyn but had a patient ask him if he could look into the BHRT way back when, and after he started researching it and trying his patients on it, saw a remarkable difference between the HRT/BHRT. So he gave up gynecology and only does BHRT now, nothing else.

IF you haven't read any books by Suzanne Somers, I urge you to. I always knew there was something wrong with my hormones and asked my Gyn and GP both to check my hormones bc I thought I was in perimenopause. Both told me I needed to try BC pills, that they wouldn't test my levels until I had missed a period. Well I never could take BC pills- ever, they caused horrific migraines in me.

When I went to the new Dr, he told me that BC pills take away your progesterone, and even when not on them, that I was completely depleted of that hormone. I am estrogen dominant and need a ton of progesterone replaced to counteract the estrogen. Not having any caused the migraines and when on BC pills it was worse.

Not only that===== on BHRT my fibromyalgia and arthritis has decreased SIGNIFICANTLY. They were worse bc of the lack of progesterone in my body. There is a reason women in perimenopause and Menopause have increased arthritis and fibro. There is definitely a hormone correlation.

Find a dr that will work with you. All doctors are NOT created equal. If you don't like what one says, keep trying. Someone out there will help you.

Let me know if there's anything more I can offer you. I'm pretty vocal about it bc I feel so awful that so many women are searching for something and don't know how to go about getting help. I want everyone to feel as great as I do- the difference in my quality of life before and after BHRT has been remarkable.

If you can do it, if you can afford it- it will be the best present you ever give yourself. Good luck.:goodvibes

I can only say what I am going through and my treatment.

For 2yrs I was struggling with periods lasting forever or none and having a bacterial infection. It was torture.

I did a round of progesterone to see if it would jump start me. It did alright. I was bleeding so heavy I thought I was going to die.

My OBGYN decided to give me a D&C in case I had a polyp (which I am prone to) and to clean me out so to speak.

I had my annual around 3 months after the D&C with no period of course. :rolleyes2

So she gave me a script for progesterone, took it and had a period. If I do not have another period by April, I am going to do more progesterone again.

Basically she wants me to have a period every 3 months so I do not get into the situation I was before.

She said if I take the progesterone and do not have a period she will test me for menopause.

Thanks for the advice. All I can say is I have been on the HRT for about a week now and no period, no spotting. I have had no moodiness and nothing seems changed except I have not had a period. I am a happy camper.

As for stopping the provera, I take it now for 10 days then leave off the rest of the month and start over. I was going to just see what happened if I didn't take it. I am thinking maybe I just needed a little push to stop my period. I had a little problem with this after I had my son so it is not unheard of with me. But if the spotting starts I will start the provera and keep on it each month for a while. I am just concerned about weight gain. So far no weight gain and I really have not stuck to my low carb diet at all this past week.

I am not sure that you know this or not, but women who have done HRT are more likely to develop breast cancer.

??? I was not aware, but my aunt, who is a Dr and did HRT is the one person, out of 7 siblings (6 girls, one boy) that had cancer. She was the only sister to do HRT. My mom (the baby of the family) was thinking about starting it when my aunt was diagnosed. My aunt strongly advised my mom against it, saying that research she'd read linked the HRT to breast cancer.

My aunt has since had a frank conversation with each of her nieces about her situation and what it means for our chances of breast cancer. (we also have an aunt from another side that had ovarian cancer, so we all actually qualify for BRCA testing - yes, my aunt and mom married a set of brothers, so I have cousins who are cousins on both sides. Sounds incestual, but I promise you, it's not.).

I used to be given Provera to make me have a period. It never occurred to me that it could be given to me again in menopause.
I took provera to start my period. I took it for 10 days and the doctor said give it 2-7 days and it should start. 17 Days post medication still no signs of my period. Ive had cramps and pains like early pregnancy, nausea if i get too hungry or if i eat a full meal, headaches every day, urinating so frequently (i feel like i live on the toilet). Ive taken 2 pregnancy tests and both were negative. i took them 6 days apart but still all symptoms remain still no period. anyone else have this problem

Can you see another doctor? If you are in menopause, why are you still bleeding? What exactly are the hormones going to do? An option to end the periods would be to have an ablation of your uterus?

Since this is kind of a personal topic, I will just give a little general feedback!

Don't like Premarin. At all.

I can recommend the HRT that is like FemHRT, generic Jinteli....
You take it every day, or if you want to limit the total amount of HRT, you can do like 4 days a week.
No monthly, or quarterly, period. No need.
I am not aware of any negatives, for me.
I can recommend!

PS: I would expect a little time for your body to re-adjust and settle in.

Good luck!!!!

I'll be 59 next month and I went through menopause about 9 years ago. I take nothing and never will. My mother took HRT for 15+ years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 69 and is still going strong at 81 after treatment and mastectomy. She had two tumors. Her oncologist said that taking HRT for that long is what caused at least one of the tumors. He also told her no woman should be eating/drinking much soy. My sisters and I have taken nothing and won't and I avoid soy as much as possible. I will say my mom never should have been put on HRT as she had had a few biopsies of lumps starting in her early 40's but was never told to not take HRT. She did have a letter from a radiologist stating that she needed to be watched closely due to the types of cysts she had. But, as a pp stated above, HRT is linked to breast cancer.

BTW, who cares if this is a zombie thread? It's not time sensitive.
