We just got our Mickey Mail from our travel agent yesterday. I am so excited to take my kids to Disney world for the first time this trip is for my sons 5th birthday. We will be staying at the WL at the end of May is this a good hotel for young children I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. Also will I be able to upgrade my room when I get there? It is also my DW birthday and I would want to surprise her but wont be able to do it until I get there. Any good ideas for things to do with our son to help him celebrate his birthday?

I'm not sure. I did tell the CM when I booked who in our party is having a birthday and made sure to also tell each dining ressie that I booked as well. We'll also be celebrating my dd's birthday on our trip.

I'd maybe give them a call back and have them to note it on your reservation.

If having something special for your son's 5th birthday is important to you the best plan is to plan it, book and and expect to pay for it. The Disney Florist has all kinds of packages, including those that decorate rooms. There is a long "Cake Thread" and a "Cake Hotline" number on the restaurants board that describes the way and the types of cakes you can order and have delivered to various restaurants as well.
When you check in request a "Birthday Button" for your son. Have him wear it all trip and he will get lots of "Happy Birthdays" all week long. At many restaurants they very well may bring him a complimentary cupcake and lit candle for desert as well.
Disney is a magical place. But we go every year around the time of my son's birthday. I note it on the reservation and we have NEVER had anything special because of it. The year he wore his birthday button, he did get lots of notice and a cupcake at desert.
So if it is important to you plan ahead, so you do not expect something special and then be disappointed.
Have a Great Trip.

I was not asking for anything free. I will pay for anything extra we do. Thank you for the info on the Disney florist. And the birthday button.

If you're planning to upgrade your room, you might want to look into doing it now, as opposed to waiting till check-in. The room type or view you want may be booked up by then, and any discounts you currently have may no longer be available.

DD loved WL when she was 2 and 3 years old. The boat to MK was also great with kids that age. They have 2 styles of boats making the rounds, and one of them you do not have to fold the stroller which makes it very easy. I really liked that everything is contained in one building. It made it very easy for me to leave DH and DD in the room at night and run down to the gift shop, or CS, or just have a few quiet minutes in a rocking chair in the lobby. Your son will be at WDW for his birthday- I don't think you can get much more special than that- who needs extras!
