Wk of Sep 24--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Oh, Judy, don't be. He's just a grouch. He should be applauding the fact that so many people are trying to get fit!!! We LOVE our penguin status!! My son is a writer and reads that guy all of the time. Whenever there is something interesting, he'll email the article to me. He refused to send me that one!
You did SO GREAT on your 5K!!!! Coming off of bronchitis and hitting a 5K...awesome!!

Hey Judy! I am too! I guess this person is saying I am slow and should not run a marathon...b/c my best time is 4:25....He says he has done 6...He never puts his time though.....By Jan, I will have run 6 also!
OUT OF CONTROL! :furious:
I would like to see him have 2 babies w/out any pain killers then get his body back into shape so he could run a marathon! :furious:

Lily - great pics! You look like you are ready to run forever! :goodvibes

Take it from me (GU phone lady), put your phone in a plastic baggie!
I always put my phone in a plastic bag...yuck...I learned the hard way at a 1/2 I did. Sunny! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: So glad you are doing Apple Fest! Go :sunny: Go :sunny: !

Swam @ the YMCA today for 1 hour.....
AHHH, Goofy training...I Just did back to back LRs every other weekend until I got up to 12/24 then tapered. I also have adhd so I xtrained by swimming and biking...I think it really helped out during the race. If anyone wants a sched...let me know, however, I think the double LRs should have started by now..not sure where the WDW marathon training is at this point b/c my mileage is geared toward this Oct marathon I am doing... :goodvibes

Terri - Here is a link (click on the first to the finish line link) I modified it by just doing 3 miles of speed work each week in whatever denominations i saw fit and by taking about 3 of my mid week key runs and doing them the day b/4 the long run and making them 1/2 the distance. I meant to do taht at 17, 18 and both 20's but it only worked out w/ my schedule to do it 3 times. goofy ended up being easy (relatively speaking)

Sunny - I'm so glad to hear your news. I was hoping that you would give applefest a go!!!!!!

Judy - I have not even looked at the link. I'm so sensitive i'm sure i'd be offended!

I'm hoping to actually start training today. I think i'm rested after my 7 hr. middle of the night trek. I spent about 1 and 1/2 hrs. today out in the woods w/ phil putting out controls for the race this weekend. SEED TICKS :guilty: I'm hoping to take a nap and then go for my first official long run. I'll try to get speedwork in later this week.

Don't worry, it doesn't even apply to you, nor does it apply to Christa. It's about us SLOOOOOOOOOOOW people..... Grrrrr. :furious:

Judy - I will be a slow one with you!!! That guy is a ****!!!! If no one ran, then he would complain about all the overweight people that should be running!!!

EDIT.... HA HA HA... I wrote b.o.o.b. above and it was censored!!!!

Sunny - I hope this is the first of many good news days you have. How exciting that you can do the race now. Is it this weekend or in October?

Today I cross trained at the Y at lunch. Yesterday I did a pathetic 30 minutes on the treadmill at the bumm crack of dawn. After I did an awesome 4 miles on Saturday, I am so weak this week. Absolutely no motivation. I think I am just tired!

Thanks for all the comments on the waist packs. I desperately need a good one, mine is junk. I have a thin waist and big hips, so the belts always slide up on me and wobble around. I prefer to wear them lower, but then when I start jogging then bounce upwards. It is very frustrating. Maybe I need to wear them tighter???

Well, the weather doesn't look too promising for Saturday, but I decided that I may run the race anyway. My first race in the rain, if it really does rain. I figure it is only 5K and I will bring extra clothes. I won't have access to a shower, but the rain will wash the sweat off, right? Now if it doesn't rain, I will just stink for awhile!!! My MIL wants to come and watch me run. I think she just wants to eat at the Beef O' Rama Festival tho.

Oh but Judy it does....He said something about people finishing around 4:20.......AHHHH! :furious:

Anywho...I am trying to figure out my 3 WDW marathon 07 goals.
1. Not sure. This would be the best of times goal! I am even afraid to try for a sub 4 hr marathon....too much pressure.
2. I think a good PR would be great here...SOmething under 4:25...but I may need an easier goal to put here and let #1 be the PR.
3. Of course to finish w/out dying or being swept! JIC...You never know how you will feel that day.

Ron (one of the guys I run with) is running this trail marathon with me along with a few more buddies.....Josh, this REALLY fast guy is running the 40 miler and FYI...He will more than likely finish b/4 me....yeah, he is that fast! Ron wants me to try to break 4 but I just cannot put that kind of stress on me.... :faint: I will just go out and see what the day holds for me.

It absolutely amazed me when I read that article. What kind of jack***, would say something like that. I guess he thought it should have stayed like it was in 1970 when there were only 127 people registered for the New York City Marathon. WHATEVER!!

Well, after my LR of 14 on Saturday my porr little legs are STILL hurting. My Shins, my Knees, my Ankles. I have been icing like crazy. The strange thing is that I went for a 3 mile run this morning and at first it took me a minute to get my legs moving without hurting because they were stiff, but once I got going they stopped hurting completely. And they didn't start hurting again until a while after I was done. So, more ice and ibuprofen, and a couple days off to deal with the pain. I guess.

jodi - Congrats on 11 miles, even more for doing it in the rain!! :thumbsup2

Judy - I can't believe you went out there and raced feeling the way you had. Great job for finishing. And yeah.... where is cam?! :confused3

Amy - I am so sorry that you are still dealing with the leg pains, but "O" how I LOVE my ice baths!!

Tammy - Welcome to the group!! :dance3:

HMHunters - Welcome to the group!! :dance3:

Sunny - That is wonderful news!! I am so happy that you are finally getting some answers. :cheer2: On another note, I just found out the hard way about phone and gu not mixing well. Looks like I'll be using a little plastic bag from now on.

Dana

OK - quick post before I head out for the day. I did my 30 min SWOG x-training today before lunch. It felt really good. I think it helped work out some tightness in my calf. Yay!!!

Sunny- YAHOOOOO!!!! I'm so glad you got some resolution to your condition, AND you finally got a doctor to listen to you. You're on your way back girl!!! WHOOOO HOOOOO!!! Have fun at AppleBlossom! Still take it easy and don't hurt yourself anymore.

Gotta run...

OK, Trying to caatch up, but I did a LOT of skimming. SO, I'm commenting and answering questions that may have been answered 4 pages ago.

Sunny - That is GREAT news!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you! Good luck at APplefest adn I hope you just keep gettign better!!

HMHunters - Welcome! I hear you about non-running dh passing you quickly. Ask anyone who was here last year about my dh vents. I hate to say it, but men are typically faster. :( We just have to live with that.

Tammy - Mfm Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham, although this has likely been ansered. Welcome!!!!

MelR - I'm sorry you coul dnot finish, butwood and lightning? Yikes!! Hop eyou firend heals quickly.

monte - COnhgrats on your half!

Mel - I'd go back to a r/w. JMO, but you don't wna to get re-injured.

Matt - I know this has been answered alredy, but I wanted to add my $0.02. Dh and I actually got slower when we went from r/w to full r. However, I founf r/w to hurt more. :confused3

Krista - SOrry about your knees. ouch! Good to see you again, I was wondering about you this weekend.

Steven - Thanks fo rpopping in!

Judy - COngrats on teh 5K!!!!!! DOesn't seeing the support of others make a world of difference?

Helen - SO good to see you!!! Met someone from Australia on our cruise and her travel pans remeinded me of you.

Lily -Love the penguin qupte!!

Where'd Cam go?

Amy - Glad to hear things are going a little better

Jen - Hang in there ! It will get better

I'd like to verify that Kevin does major XT on football days. We saw him last Thursday night and he was working hard!

Water Belts FYI - I have tehRunlite trail runner. DH and I use 8 bottles. Hoever, I carry a plain old fanny pack with other supplies (phone, kkleenex, pre-pacjakged gu, chap stick and wipes.

Question - Tehre is a marathon in Grand Rapids (MI) on the 29th of October. DH and I are thinking about it. It falls on a 6-miler weekend btween teh 12 and 14-milers. So, it seems to look good to do 12-13-14, but htat may be a bit much. Can we ease up on our weekdays before and after? can we do the 6 instead of the 12 and then do 13, 14 b2b? SHould we just skip it? ANyone else want to join us if it works?

Update on my traning

8-miler Saturday was a major stonker, but we did see a crane and a blue heronm in Saginaw land. That's the only time I ever wanted my camera during a run over there.

Monday - 45 min at 10:15 mpm.

We're thinking last week was a little much anfd that's why Saturday stunk. We decided to back off a bit. (Good thing, because I could not go much faster.)

OK, time to go. Been working like a fiend altely? DOn't they know it suts into my WISH time? :teeth:

Hi Judy - yes, I would love to move to the states but being British born we're not allowed to enter the lottery and my only hope of a residency visa (something called an i-visa that they give to journalists) seems to be restricted purely to people with an employment contract for a UK publication, which being freelance I don't have. Our only other option would be to buy a business, but that's not really an option either (I'm busy enough and I know what would happen if I left Tim doing it............and it involves starvation!!!). I thought all the books (now in Barnes and Noble I hasten to add) etc might have made me an 'extraordinary alien' - such a fab term that - but apparently I have to win an Oscar or Grammy or be paid millions for that (if only). So yep, Bill, looks like airline stocks are the way to go - I already have another 10 flights to do between now and Jan 2!!!!!

Hey Helen- so don't move to the US, move to Canada instead. Most Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border so easy to get to FL, CA etc and to get back to the UK to visit your family that's still there.

Sunny- great news!!!! Mega- happy dance for you

Bill- Umm, I didn't really think about it in terms of the seven months thing. That makes it seem a bit more daunting than just taking one race at a time.

Got to go learn about Enbrel and psoriasis now and I may have found my niche in pediatrics- I actually like the preemies. Too bad it requires a pediatric residency before the fellowship because I'm not so sure I could take 3 years of outpatient peds. I really DON'T like screaming, crying infants/toddlers(9-18 month range: they have stranger anxiety)

Lynn - Glad you are enjoying the NICU! Peds don't make enough to pay off their loans though (We can tell you from experience) Thankfully, phil can do internal med. too

Hi, everyone!
Welcome to all our new WISH teammates!
Sunny -- I am soo glad you have been feeling better
Carrie and Judy and others who have returned from trips -- welcome back! Sounds like everyone has been having fun!
The training that everyone has been reporting is so impressive. So appreciative because you continue to inspire me.

I am soo sorry I have been MIA. Totally swamped with work while in CA though getting on the internet every morning at 5 or 5:15 am to catch up and then coordinate with my office made it less offensive than missing park time. :teeth: Even with all that time spent on work last week, catching up has been a HUGE undertaking. To top things off, I had a migraine Saturday night and Sunday and horrible sinus pain. Yesterday got worse with severe stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. (sorry TMI!) Marginally better today.

Not much to report since the DL 1/2 unless you count stuffing my face as cross-training. Yes, in the space of 10 days, I managed to gain 5 pounds! I am now working to counteract that continuous binge, but how could I resist all the great food at Napolini's, Blue Bayou and Storytellers Cafe, beignets at Brennan's Jazz Express, lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, tigger tails, etc., etc.?

The 1/2 was fabulous in many ways and horrendous in others. I had less than an hour of sleep and relied very much on a Tab Energy drink, sport beans, 2 energy bars, powerade and water stations. I LOVED everyone's comments on my shirt -- of course the comments came as people passed me. The hills were more than I expected and the crowds were unbelievable at the back of the pack. There were seconds I fantasized about how one goes about dropping out during a race, but I didn't want to let myself or my WISH team buddies down. I learned alot about giving your body time to adjust to a 3-hour time change, and to getting enough sleep. Hopefully, I will remember all that in January (and yes, Anne reminded me to stretch and the stretching really helped with my hip/hamstring issue). Thanks, Anne!

All that being said, the "bling" was certainly worth it, but I don't anticipate we will be travelling to the West coast to do the event again, especially since it will be Labor Day weekend next year and that is DD's birthday.

So, DL having been my last significant "training" session, I'll share how it went:
My Garmin says I went 14.36, but I know it was 13.36, because I saw it skip a mile as I was looking at it. So, assuming with weaving I really did go 13.36 in 3:24:15, my pace was 15:17. Not much of a cushion, but I am glad it was fast enough on the day that it mattered.

My splits:
Mile 1 – 14:44
Mile 2 – 14:09
Mile 3 – 15:04
Mile 4 – 14:51
Mile 5 – 14:51
Mile 6 – 15:42
Mile 7 – 15:55
Mile 8 – 15:46
Mile 9-10 – 26:46 (avg. 13:23) (this is where my Garmin went kerflewey)
Mile 11 – 18:50 ???? not sure this is right
Mile 12 – 15:54
Mile 13 – 16:05
Last .36 – 5.35 (15:36 pace)

We did a LOT of walking around the parks last week and other places we went sightseeing, but my first real training since the 1/2 was 50 minutes at the gym tonight. 15:04 mile on the treadmill with an incline of 1.5 for part of it, and then 35 minutes on bike doing hill training. I am convinced that hill training willl help condition me for the FULL.

Well, I am off to return phone calls and then to bed early, hoping I'll wake up feeling much better.

Love you guys!

Like Nancy, I feel like it's been AGES since I've posted. It's also been ages since I've run, although DH and I have been trying to do a 3 mile walk every Sunday morning, but that's all the miles I've done since around the 4th of July! And since school started, I haven't even had time to visit the boards more than a couple of times. I volunteered to manage the concession stand at the high school for the band, and naively thought I could do that along with a fulltime job, and the result is NO FREE TIME! But I'm posting in hopes that I'll be guilted into getting back out there and hitting the roads.

Sunny - glad to hear your good news!

Jackie

Cam - Bummer of a way to return with work and migraine! Hope you're feeling better soon. BTW - Thanks for enightening me! I always wondered how to spell kerflewey. :teeth:

Lynne - Good ot see you. If you could do preemies, that is a real gift. I don't think I could. Glad you're doign well!!!

Helen - I like Lynne's idea, as long as you don't require health care. :( Maybe you could just fly in to see Lynne when care was required? ;)

Jen - I''ll be doing my 9-miler about 20 min NW of Milwaukee Saturday. Want to join me? :teeth:

Good morning all!!

Sunny-- If nothing else, it's good to hear you are finally getting some answers.

Judy-- :furious: I read the article yesterday and thought about it a lot..... he's a moron. :teeth: The idea that you would actively encourage people AWAY from even trying to set big goals and accomplish big things--- I just don' get it. Yes, he does want to go back to the days of yore when only the elites ran. Beyond that, there is an attitude of "Don't try anything you won't be immediately good at or compete to win" which is particularly galling. I am here to tell you that 999 out of 1000 runners you will meet will be fully supportive of what you are out there trying to do. They know how hard it is, they know they aren't going to win either and they are mightly impressed by everyone's effort to get there. As the namesake of my high school, Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

Carrie-- I think the GR half would fit fine. I have heard mixed reviews on the course management (staffing, aid stations), but I think you could go 12, 13, 14 with no problem.

Cam-- Glad to see you. Sounds like DL was a blast!

Yesterday, armed with my new training plan, I did three miles (walk breaks when I need them) and:
Mile 1: 7:57
Mile 2: 8:08
Mile 3: 7:50
Total: 23:55 or 7:58 / mile pace. :faint:

Six miles plus spinning class for me today. I'm tired already. :teeth:

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Good Morning TEAM! :surfweb:

Kevin- I LOVE that quote above. I really need to remember that because I have a tendency to beat myself up and belittle any accomplishments. It's very easy for me to take a little seed of criticism and use it as a reason to make myself feel inferior. BTW: GREAT job with your run yesterday!!! Sub-8 mpm!!! Whew!

OK, I did my run this morning. MfM called for ~40 min with strides afterwards, and I was planning on running 4 miles on the high school track. I wasn't going to do the strides because my legs have been giving me hints that I've been pushing them too much. I was on the track by 6am and it was still dark. I couldn't read my Garmin because it was so dark. By 3 miles, I felt really tired (not sore or anything just out of energy), my left calf was very tight, and I decided to not do 4 miles so I could stretch. I stopped my Garmin and it read 29:20 min/3.36 miles/8:43 mpm!!! Whoa, no wonder I felt tired. I thought I was doing my normal 10 mpm pace, but I think my pace has increased. Here are my splits:

Mile 1: 8:51 min
Mile 2: 8:25 min
Mile 3: 9:01 min.

Gotta head out to the bus stop now. I'll catch up later.

What does it say about me that I only know tha tquote from teh Princess Diaries? :confused3

So, will you be doing GR with us? I can have dh pack a water bottle for you adn I'll pack some extra Gu, so we won't need the aid stations. :teeth:

Holy cow! You are speedy! Glad you like your new plan!

Dave - you been hanging out with Speedy? Way to go!

ETA: FInally checked out Judy's article. OMG! Judy, you think the people cheering you on last weekend thought that? The only ones who would are teh elitest. WHat do they care. NOt like I could get in their way if I tried. :p
