Wk Of Oct 7 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hummmm, Judy hasn't showed up yet this weekend? Well I guess she figured we would just try to talk her out of it any way. I know it's a night race and all but a walking ala natural is pushing the envelope a bit to far. We really need to talk her out of this.

You didn't hear about thisd from me I'm just an innocent little whisper in your ear.

Oops gotta go the politicly correct police are at the door and they brought those other people with them. Word to the wise, read the darn fine print before you sign that thing about being an organ donnor.

"YARC"

Y'all have a fun Sunday, I'm slinking off to work.

Dave:hippie:

Colleen - sorry to hear you had to cancel out of MCM. I hope the surgery goes well.

Lisa - I may be doing a lot of walking at the Goofy, too. Although I hope to do some short, easy run sessions in between the walks (for some reason if i try to walk any distance ata fast pace, I can feel the shin splints starting). If I walk then mix in some slow runs, it's not as bad. I'll see how my legs feel after my 1/2 in SF in 2 weeks.

Susie - sending :wizard: for DH's job security.

Gotta run (literally). I'm off to do a 5K (first workout in 10 days since being sick).

Terri

Hey Team - Yes I did my 108 laps yesterday which was 9 miles. I had a couple extra laps for my warm up and cool down. And I forgot my MP3 player, so it was a boring couple of hours. I finished with a strong pace of 12:53 average and I could have easily gone farther. I feel good with that since my summer 1/2 marathon training had me going much slower with my PF pain.

WWDave - Happy B-day.

Kelly - GOOD LUCK with your marathon. Take it easy this week.

Mel - Glad to see your pace is picking up. You are doing AWESOME.

Susie - Pixie dust for your family. I really hope everything works out!

OK, DH is napping along with DD4 and DD6 is watching a movie... AHHHHH mom time!

Good afternoon WISH teammates!!!

First: :woohoo: and :cheer2: to all WISHers running races this weekend! You all are great!

Second, I ran 13 miles this morning at the same time my DH was running the BAA 1/2 marathon. The weather was cloudy and misty from time to time and relatively cool. I didn't run the 1/2 marathon as a) I didn't know about it in time to register and b) didn't think I could finish in 2 1/2 hours or less (they close the course after 2 1/2 hours). That's OK as I've got the ToT waiting for me.

Happy Birthday Dave!

Lisa: I've had several massages in my life but never knew about the need to drink lots of water to flush the lactic acid out of the body. Thanks for the tip!

To our friends to the north: Happy Thanksgiving! At least I think it's Thanksgiving in Canada. If it's not, hold the happy's until it is!!

Colleen: keep us posted on how your surgery goes!

escape: I've got my fingers crossed for Steve; it never fails to amaze me that companies feel that eliminating those that are higher paid will help the company. Don't they know realize that they are highly paid for a reason--like they KNOW what they are doing? Sigh. Sending lots of pixie dust your way.

hockeygirl: nice job on the consistent splits! :thumbsup2

Woops--laundry just buzzed so gotta run. I hope everyone has a lovely day!

Colleen

Sorry about having to withdraw from Marine Corps. Only you can make that decision, and I know you must have agonized over it. I'm assuming the surgery will be minimally invasive (scope), so hopefully you'll be back in the game soon.

Will we see you in Orlando in January?

Dave

Happy birthday to you. I'm always happy to acknowledge the senior statesman of the group, especially since it isn't me. Does this mean you're finally old enough to have a beer?

Martha

Like I said last week, you are kicking butt and taking names.

I ran the BAA Half Marathon today, and have a very brief report on the weekly race page (well I will soon). My training has been going well for the last 5 weeks, so I anticipated a good result.

The weather was far less than ideal. I mean, it's October 7 in New England, and it was 66 with 100% humidity at 6 a.m. when I woke up. I had sweat pouring out of me for the first 5 miles and then the wind changed and cool mist blew all over us. I helped me a lot heat-wise, but sure made me cold after I finished.

I hit mile 1 in 9:35 and did #2 in 8:45. Miles 3 to 8 were all within 5 seconds of 9 minutes, and I hit mile 8 in 72:10. I felt comfortable, but wondered how long I could carry it. The answer came in mile 9 when I realized I was pretty cooked. I hit mile 10 in 90:35, which is the fastest 10 I've run since picking up this running thing again 4 autumns ago. Unfortunately at mile 10 the wheels came off, and miles 11 and 12 were a struggle physically and mentally. They had fluid stops and I took advantage of them, getting a drink and walking for a good minute + to recover. Surprisingly or perhaps not, mile 13 was much easier, so I held it together and finished in 2:00:35. It is somewhat disappointing to have averaged 9:04 for the first 10, but 9:40 for the last 5K, causing me to miss sub-2.

Given I was looking to finish around 2:05 today I have to be pleased with the result, but come on. I couldn't find 36 seconds out there over 13 miles today? Luckily the answer to that question is no, I don't think I left anything out there on the course today. But if I only could have carried my pace and not had to take those short recovery breaks at the stations, I could have broken 2.

On the other hand, this is my fastest half marathon since returning to running in 2003, by a good 5 minutes, so I am pretty pleased. But still . . .

I tend to flame out between miles 8 and 11 in longer races, so I'm very pleased to be registered for the 8.1 mile TOT run in 20 days.

I'll see a lot of you there. Best luck with your training.

Craig

Colleen - It sounds like you are making a tough decision now that will probably give you more freedom in the future! Sorry about all of your knee problems!

Susie - I hope everything works out w/ your husband's job. I am still working at the bike shop. I am going to be off for 2 weeks as the boy out of school on break!

The century ride went well yesterday. It was quite hot for an october event, but it was fine. It was very windy, which I found unpleasant. Phil and I both have very sore throats. I think it was from wagging our tounges in the wind for several hours. Nice visual image, huh?

Reporting back in...

I finished my 5K today. Boy, can I tell I've been out of action! I did 3.1 miles in 41:52 for an average mpm of approx. 13:45.

I was okay with the time, but boy did I feel it afterward. I was really tired. My splits were:

mile 1: 13:11
mile 2: 13:09
Mile 3.1 15:32 (I walked a lot more during the last 1.1 mile)

But at least it felt good to be back DOING something again! Gonna try for 5 miles tomorrow.

Terri

HELLO TEAM

This is kind of wierd but I am going to give you a spectator's view of a race. It was :cool1: AWESOME :cool1:

My DH and friend did great and the WISH er's were inspiring. I took a bunch of pictures and I really hope this is ok, if not I am in big trouble but I wanted to post them here (even though I don't know who some of them are :confused3 -- I'm sooo sorry)

But I wanted everyone to see just a tiny portion of the great representation we had of the WISH team. I know I missed a lot of people and I am VERY sorry!!

Also I figured out that I can not take pictures and cheer at the same time:
that is why there are no pictures of DH and my friend Jen finishing and why these WISHer's I got pictures of I could not scream for!!

GREAT JOB WISH TEAM

I know I probably should have posted this on weekend Race thread but I was just so DARN PROUD OF YOU GUYS!!

I had to post it over here.

By the way I wanted to tell you guys that my friend Jen had never even gone farther than 3.75 miles before today and not only did she finish but she did it in 1:21 and I have to brag on my husband because he stayed with her and pushed when she thought she could not do it!!! It was a really inspiring day!!

Quick drive-by here:

Did y'all hear that they had to shut down the Chicago Marathon today due to heat? Were any WISHers there this morning? They're reporting one death and something like 200+ people taken to the hospital!

Oh, no. One of my coworkers was there. I'm gonna check the results right now to see if he finished. (He was aiming for 3:50)

ETA: Just saw he finished in 4:23:17. Heat must have gotten to him.

I read on the website they were going to have sweepers at the half-way point. You had to make it there by noon. I would be interested to hear what else happened today.

For a reference point, I ran it last year and at the start the wind chill was 22F.

Hi Wishers!
Just wanted to post a quick update as I complete my first half-marathon yesterday. My goal really was just to finish but I had a secret goal to finish in 2:15 or less. Well, thanks to the typhoon going by we had ridiculous amounts of wind yet it was still around 85 degrees (the race didn't start till 8 am which didn't help with the heat). Anyway, despite all that I finished in 2:18:20. In a way it was such a great feeling to finish but I also asked myself many times, can I really handle twice this at the full? Hope you all are doing well with your training!
Kristin

Hey--I just posted a link to the Chi-town Marathon article in a separate thread. Prayers going out to all the athletes and families affected today!

Angie--thanks for the pics and the race report!

Kristen--that's a great half time even w/o the typhoon!

Kristin: way to go on your 1/2 marathon!! Despite the wind and tem p you did great!! :thumbsup2

Angie: thanks for posting the pictures! They are great! Your DH and friend did awesome!!

I hope anyone running the Chicago marathon are OK. If you ran it, please let us know how it went!

Yes, it is all over the news. One runner, a 35 yr old male, died, there are reports of running out of water on the course, lots of people really struggling. What a shame! I did my LW today while watching the race on TV - both the men's and women's first place finishes were absolutely amazing. The heat combined with an 8AM start really hurt.

In running, 36 seconds is FOREVER! Be pround. Sounds like a great run in not so great conditions.:thumbsup2

Colleen - All I can say is sorry.:grouphug:

Melissa - :cool1: :yay:  for your century.

So sorry to hear about the Chicago Marathon. Hope any WISHer who ran it is OK.
OK thats all ....going to bed!

I promise to pop in later and catch up with everyone, but I figured I better just hurry up and post my LR report before I chicken out. I have been feeling REALLY great lately about my runs, short and long, because they have really been effortless. Well.... that all ended this morning. First, my good night sleep was interrupted at 2am when DS6 woke up vomiting all over my bed. So the kids had to be cleaned, the sheets removed and thrown in the wash, etc... "O" the fun of being mom. Finally we all get back in bed, and I am up at 6:30 to go out for my run.

Today was supposed to be 16 miles. I was really doing fine, until about mile 5 or 6 when I started feeling this burn in the arch of my foot. It felt like something was rubbing. It didn't go away so at mile 7 I stopped and took my shoe off, but couldn't find anything wrong, so I got up and continued running. Now, mile 7-8 is a big bridge that goes over a river, so I had to go over it one way and then back over on the way back. On the way back my foot was really bothering me and so I stopped again after I got off the bridge. Now there was a big ole blister. I ran another mile then called it quits. Luckily, my Mom was out running on the same trail I was, and was closer to her car, so I called her and had her come pick me up. I ran my 10 miles in something like 1hr:33min, so around a 9:30 pace, but it just felt alot harder than that.

I am trying to figure out what I need to do as far as my training now. This week was supposed to be a 16LR, then next week a step back week, after that an 18LR, then TOT. I did get in 15 miles last week. Should I just continue with my schedule as planned and run my 18 in two weeks, or should I try to get in another LR this week too? If anyone has any advice, suggestions, or pick me ups, I could probably use them right now.

Sorry to come in here and whine. I just know that when I have a crappy run or a crappy day you guys are usually really good at helping me feel better. I promise to come back tomorrow with a much better attitude and catch up with everyone!!

Dana

Hi, everyone! I promise I'll come back soon to catch up, but wanted to say:

Congrats to all our teammates who did races this weekend! :woohoo: Howard decided Thursday to run a 15k today. I'm convinced he did this to truly earn membership in the YARC. I'll just point out that since the CDC on 8/12 the only steps he has put in were when Carrie was visiting in early September - 5.1 miles that day.

Speaking of YARC -- happy birthday, Dave! :cake:

The situation at Chicago today is so sad. Saying prayers for all those families.

Sending out huge hugs to Colleen and Lisa and everyone who is hurting. Dana, so sorry about your blister!

Oh, I know I've missed so many. I'm sorry! It's so good to see you here, Melissa! We've missed you! So glad also to hear that Bree is running. We'll see her in January, right? How is Luke?

My back is so much better. There was a big difference when I woke up yesterday and could get out of bed without moaning in pain, and could use my right arm for lifting more than a pound. The pain is definitely down to about a 2 from what was an 8 or 9 so I am so grateful for all the prayers and pixiedust! I have been so diligent about taking the anti-inflammatory and have not wogged or jogged at all. I did a lot of walkign at Howard's race today to see him 4 times and get to the finish, but it felt so good to be outside in the sunshine around all those athletes! :sunny:

Tonight I did 60 minutes on the recumbent bike -- 12.2 miles. Every little bit helps, right? :)

Have a great night, all! I have to get back to work!

Colleen - I'm hanging in there. I see the doctor again on Wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed that he'll tell me everything's healed and I can start walking, at least. I'm so sorry you had to make such a tough decision about MCM. I've done the same with the City of Oaks here in Raleigh so that I'll be fully ready for Disney, but not a day goes by that I don't mourn just a little.

Kelley - pixiedust: that you'll be okay on Saturday. Just listen to your body!

Stephanie - I'm with you on the fall weather. DD had a soccer game today, and DH (her coach) said every single girl threatened to throw up at some point because of the heat!

Susie - :grouphug: and pixiedust: for your DH and family.

Renee - How was the soccer tournament?

Craig - Congrats on your half. Awesome time, even if you didn't find that 36 seconds!

Terri - Great job on the 5K - you've made a terrific recovery!

Angie - Thanks for the pix!

Kristin - Congrats on your half! :cheer2:

Dana - Sorry you had a stonker run. If it were me, I'd go ahead with the schedule and do the 18 in 2 weeks since you've already run 15.

Cam - Hooray that your back is improving! :yay:

Posted on Stephanie's other thread that my Galloway group leader and several of our members were running Chicago. I checked their times and none of them finished, so I'm assuming they're among the 10,000 who quit due to heat. Most of them have times thru 25K, then nothing after that. I can't wait till they get home and update us on how they are.

Jackie
