Wk Of Oct 7 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Lou, I think you have to give yourself a tremendous amount of credit for doing so well in a race of that length which was so much longer than you'd done before, in the blistering heat. BTW, my dear friend (and partner) was at the race and finished right behind you. She asked me if I knew what you look like since she thinks she was right behind you almost the whole time. Small world, huh?
That is interesting...very small world. Since this was a relatively small race (680 racers) I ended up only seeing a few people after mile 6 because the runners were pretty spread out for most of the race. I remember a number of people who were around me because I saw the same people for miles and miles. Here's what I look like running http://www.athlinks.com/racer/21653425/Louis-Rodriguez.aspx. Picture that guy but totally overheated and wincing from pain.

Hey all! Well, my first Disney marathon training run went well today. I altered the plan a little since I haven't had much distance in the past week and half. I am using the FIRST program, so I did 4X800s (instead of 6) at 7:48 and a 10 minute warm-up/cool down. Still feeling good. Now I've got to head to the gym--they called me into work, needing some extra help today. Good thing I can schlep the kids with me!

Christa - Here's what I am doing as far as my training. I have been following a Galloway/Higdon plan. I've been using the miles from Higdon with a 1min walk every 2 miles. Here are what my LR's look like from here on out if I don't change my schedule.

I noticed that while writing this down that I have a 3 week taper. I don't know if I should taper 3 weeks or 2. I know last year I went into the race feeling like I hadn't done enough running in the weeks leading up to the race, then again, I really didn't do enough running in the weeks leading up to the race. I think I slacked off even more than the taper actually called for. I am going to do some looking around at tricharlotte and elsewhere and see what the usual taper is. I like the tricharlotte plan that calls for a 24 miler. I like running the farther distance in training.

Dana, looks to me that you have a 4 week taper. :confused3 That being said, you have some huge numbers out there. You go girl. You will really be prepared.

Lou -- Well, fancy that! We have ANOTHER handsome WISH teammate! I sent your link to Jess and here is her response:

I don’t think that I saw him (if I would have seen a picture of his back, it might have been more telling). But you can let him know that I was the wearing a pink tank top with sun glasses too big for my face and singing, by myself, very loudly off key. I finished about two minutes behind him so unless he slowed down at some point, he might never have seen me either.

LOL!!

G'day WISH teammates! :surfweb:

Today is a holiday AND a rest day for me. So I thought I'd catch up with everyone.

My heart goes out to everyone who trained so hard for the Chicago marathon and had weather like that! It is so disheartening to have that happen. My thoughts are also with the family members of the man who died.

Christa: I kept telling him that...

Dana: so sorry about your blister! I, too, wear double-layered socks but still have problems with blisters on the bottom of my toes. I tape them but sometimes that doesn't help. My sports podiatrist suggested spraying them with antiperspirant which does seem to do some good. I don't need quite so much tape any more.

Cam: happy to hear your back is better! Take care of yourself!!

WWDave: are you sure your "soreness" isn't due to too much birthday party celebration? Hmmm?

lourodrigis: congrats on your 18 mile race! It doesn't sound like the most ideal conditions but you should congratulate yourself on AWESOME times! :thumbsup2

Stephanie: kudos to getting back in the saddle on training!!

Susie: I am so sorry you are having your doubts! It is one of the loneliest things I've ever done, training for a marathon. I understand entirely how you feel as this is my first marathon. I often question my sanity. We are here for you when you need us to buck you up. Think how wonderful it will be to have it behind you!

Renee: so sorry to hear about your stonker! You'll do much better next time!

Judy: your screensaver is great! May I use it?

To those sick and in pain: :wizard: I'm sure I've missed a number of people and I hope everyone gets better really soon!

I've got a lot going on between now and ToT and I shall welcome the break with open arms. I am excited about seeing so many WISHers and meeting those I've never met before. It will be a total blast!

Have a lovely rest of the day everyone!

Hey! How come Cam gets to see your pic but I'm "not authorized". :rolleyes1

My pace dropped from 8:36 to about 10:00 consistently throughout the race so I was slowing down the whole race. If the race went on for another mile your friend would have probably blown right by me. I don't remember anyone with a pink tank drop singing off key but I was pretty incoherent the last 6 miles. I was seeing more pink elephants than ladies in tank tops.

Yeah you have scheduled 3. Look at tricharlotte. These plans really work for me...NOW, if you just lived in Charlotte...you could use the routes on tricharlotte too....and we could run the LRs together.;)
I am SO TIRED of running LONG by myself.
PS...I only went to 18 for my trail run last year and went to 20 miles last year for WDW and had a 4 week taper due to knee pain...and that worked out well. BUt I prob won't taper that long again unless I have too.

Lou - GREAT pics! WTG on the AWESOME run!!!

Bill...I saw you I was near you during part of the race and I was pacing Roxy (if that is her name) for 4 miles or so and she left me in her dust towards the end. Here's my pic of me after finishing...

4 miles on the TM tonight. Tried to run a bit but quickly realized it may be a bit soon for that. 57:45. Really, really had to push to do that. Learned you can lose a lot in 9 days of not training. And I learned that you can feel better and then end up beating up your body again, so I'll take it easy for a few days. Swinging my right arm definitely aggravated something.

Thanks for posting the pictures Angie. And Bill, yes that's me in the first picture. This looks like it was close to the finish as I could barely keep my head up at this time. I started my sprint a little too early :)

Sorry I didn't see you Angie but I was just concentrating on the finish at this time.

Thanks again,
Duane

Cam - isn't it amazing how it can months to build up the endurance and then a week or two of not training can cause it all to fall apart. I did 3.1 yesterday and 5 today and it was tough. I felt so out of condition, but I got it done! :) Thanks for the book recommendations, too. I have thought about getting the 1st Marathons book, but never did. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Susie - Hang in there. We all have those moments where we question our sanity in training for these races (like every time I start:rolleyes: ). But the feeling of accomplishment feels so good, when the workout/race is over.
You can do it. We're all here to support each other. Think how nice it'll be sporting that Tiffany necklace after the Nike race:goodvibes

Renee- Yep. I got the 5 miler in today. Felt a little better today than after yesterday's run (just a little). XT tomorrow.

Craig - I went with 2 pairs of socks for the 07 Goofy. Wore a thin layer first and then the "supposedly" blister free socks. Ended up with 5 blisters on my feet  I used your advice of the vaseline for the spot where I got a wicked blister during the 06 Goofy. Worked like a charm :) Not even a hint of a blister on that part of my foot. This year I may vaseline my whole foot!

Lou - congrats on the 18 miles!:cool1: Maybe next year for our Phillies!

Talking about mental toughness - what do you guys do to get you through the long runs/races? Do you think about anything in particular? Listen to music, etc.?

I find that when I'm doing my training, if I tend to check the Garmin frequently, then I get kinda stressed and worry if my pace is to fast, slow or just notice how much farther I have to go. It seems to make me more tired. So, to avoid that I try to focus on something to keep me from looking at the Garmin.

On today's 5 miler, I had my iPod on. Now from past experiences I know it takes approximately 4 songs to play to complete a mile. So I made up my mind not look at the Garmin until after the 15th song played (which would put me close to the 4 mile mark) I could try to pick up the pace for the last mile if I was too slow.

On other occasions, I'll count my steps. I may decide to go 2000-3000 steps before I look at the Garmin. It's a lot of counting, but it keeps my mind off the distance, the time and any pain or discomfort I may feel. (With all that counting, there must be some OCD in me somewhere! :rolleyes1 )

My 5 mile time today was 1:07:37, which comes out to approx. 13:32 mpm pace. :goodvibes

Well, I think I'm finally about to kick this virus. I had a fever and sore throat for almost a week. So tedious!

I'm going to attempt to run tomorrow on the TM. I made an executive decision and marked my calendar in big GREEN letters "SICK" for my lost workouts. I decided I shouldn't break out the red pen. It's my stupid calendar- why was I going to punish myself!? :rotfl:

I also bought a new running stroller. We have an old one I keep at my mom's house 60 miles away, but it's really awkward to drag it back and forth. I was panicking about when we were going back and how I was going to get DH to babysit during my next LR if I didn't have it, and then I thought "got another 13 weeks of this, moron-- Stop being cheap!" :rolleyes1 Coach Harry should be pleased to have another vehicle so we can cruise the streets looking for parks and puppies...

Terri - It's always next year for us. At least we get to watch a few of our ex-players, Curt Schilling and Paul Byrd, have success in the playoffs. I'm kidding of course.

The iPod is what gets me through LRs and races. I used to just hit shuffle but now I am finding that I need to get the "right" songs for those LRs/races. I generally try to pack it with songs that will get me fired up. It's funny how a song can increase your pace when you need a boost.

Good morning WISH Wariors.

You will get a break from my silliness since I have to work a 12 hour shift today. We have inventory at the store so 9 am to 9 pm is in order.

I had a nice 12 miler with my lady yesterday so today should be a rest day anyway.

This is our last day of hot weather, a front from Canada is coming through tonight, Thank you Kim. It's great to have friends who are connected.

Everyone have an awesomely wicked day and safe.

Prior to this weekends race I didn't know this thread existed...but I like it! If you don't mind me asking, how much do all of you run on a daily basis?? I read a post (Dave I think) that said 12 miles, 18 (Lou), and a couple of 5's. The fives are more down my ally since I'm just starting out. I was a pretty heavy smoker for 15 years and just quit smoking and started running a year ago. I'm working up on my endurance slowly but surely. Two years ago I couldn't run the length of a city block, let alone a 10K in FL humidity! Anyhow...nice to meet all of you!

I'm just a walker dear so 12 miles for me is different than for a runner. I do about 30 to 40 miles a week while training for the marathon and Goofy challange but average 20 to 25 miles a week when I'm not training for anything.

I was a smoker also, as was my lady Erica. I smoked for 34 years and quit when I turned 50, 6 years ago, Erica quit about 6 mo later. I've been smoke free for 6 years and lost even that occassional desire for one that lingers on.

Good luck with your training and hope to meet you someday. I'm shy also.

How much a day?? Well that depends on the day.:lmao: I do around 30 miles a week running and also bike around 20 to 60 miles. Let me :welcome: you to this crazy thread! We have fun.

Don't let WWDave kid you! He is AWESOME! I could never walk a marathon. Running is much easier for me. WTG DAVE! YOU ROCK!
Are you training for something...WDW?
