Wk Of Oct 14 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey all,

I got in 9 miles yesterday and plan to get in 5 today. I'm headed in Philly for work and figured I will head over to the park to get the miles in along the river while I'm in town. My only problem is now pain in both knees. I'm actually at the point where it hurts to walk up and down stairs. Days like this make me question the pounding I am putting on my joints. Do any of you out there run marathons and not have pain throughout the year or is the pain a normal thing?

Lou

Lou[/B] Sounds like a good pace to me, can't wait till I get back to that. 4 weeks from today I go under the knife :scared1: I'm scared to death but I keep focusing on getting back to my serious training!! Thanks for the well wishes tomorrow night. My BULLS are actually acknowledged (in a very small place) on the front of sports illustrated tomorrow!!

Angie - Why the surgery? What scares me is I have pain in both knees and the guy who got me into this marathon training had to quit this year because he needs to get a knee scoped.

Believe it or not there is barely a mention of the Rutgers/SF game in the local papers today. Up here a bad Eagles and Giants team will still get headlines over college football. Good luck!

Hi Everyone!

Cam - WT on your 5k! who cares about the time, it was a personal victory! Take care of that hip and get better soon.

Dave - I was wondering why you weren't posting. Good Luck at MCM. I have lots of friends going and a few of them run around your pace so I will tell them to watch for you.

I wish I was going to TOT or MCM, but I have to pick and choose which races I do. I can't do them all in one year. Its a bummer getting old. I just wish I had started running when I was younger....

Did my double run again yesterday. 8 miles in the morning in 70:36 and 5 hilly miles at night in 44:34. It took me several minutes to do the math because I am not used to sub 9 minute miles.

Pixie dust to all the people who need to get healthy!

Cecilia

Krisit--makes me feel better that you are leaving on Sat. and aren't packed yet. DH and I are attending a marriage conference this weekend, so I can't pack for Disney until we're back from that. It's giving me an ulcer thinking about all that needs to get done in the next 6 days (conference, Race for the Cure, Boo at the Zoo, school, work, aaaaahhhhhh!)--and most of it on the sly since the trip is a surprise for DD. Good luck getting your stuff done!

Dave--Scary dream--but wait, now that I think of it, getting lost in Disney with DW/DH wouldn't be all bad--gotta find some way to get the vicious dogs outta there though;)

Angie--Good luck to the Bulls tonight. It's great to see them doing so well this year--is that where you were going to school? Didn't realize your surgery is so close--PD that the recovery time is short and you're back out on the roads ASAP. Oh, and GREAT run yesterday--Tell Bobby HI from us too!

Judy--I think I would be driving the family nutzo about leaving for WDW in a week, but since the trip is a surprise for DD, I can't say much until she's in bed--only leaves around an hour for this:cool1:  :cool1: :woohoo:

Okay, better see what's up with the kidlets--7:30 and not out of bed yet, hope that doesn't mean someone is sick:rolleyes: Have a great day all!

Eva - thanks for the compliment!! The boy LOVES that hoodie!! It is his favorite. We are not doing disney this year, but we will have to go back next year to get one that fits him as he keps growing:rotfl2: .

Stephanie - Thank you so much for the kind offer! We are staying at the Hampton WLR, b/c it has an indoor pool and hot tub and it has big suites for all our kids and gear! My friend Sarah (aka EC, External Commando) is keeping the kids while we race. We thought it should be as easy for her as possible. I'm hoping to get a visit in to Jason's Deli, Middle Eastern Cusine and Igibon while I am there!! Probably won't hit them all as the race usually takes us about 12 hours.

Jackie - I am so sorry to hear about your ankle. I do hope you feel better soon.

Craig - Awesome time on that 5k.... aren't you turning into a speed demon yourself?!

Tricia - I was having the same problem with the treadmill a few weeks ago. I was finding reasons NOT to run outside!! The past few weeks I have been really forcing myself to get outside and run. As far as your shin splints. Try icing them immediately after a run and at least 2-3 more time during the day. It REALLY helps.

Kristi - an 8 miler one week prior to the race?! Holy Cow... I have 18 planned for this Saturday!! I have decided that TOT isn't really a "race" as much as it is a fun run with my friends!!

Lou - Lately I have been hurting REALLY bad. I don't remember it from last year, but DH said I was hurting then too. Except last year it was in my knees. I almost think it is impossible to put in these kinds of miles and not feel some discomfort. However, if you can't run without pain (without changing your gate) then you might need to cut back on the miles and try some R.I.C.E. By the way I live on Ibuprofin and Ice!! My pain is when I am walking though, not running!!

Cam - Awesome job on that 5k!! How cares about the time, you ran the whole thing!! How cool is that?! I hope your hip feels better soon.

Monte - I have to agree with Bill.... send some of that cold stuff our way!! Freakin' 90 degrees!! This stuff better cool down REAL quick for TOT!!

Ok , I know I have been MIA. I have been feeling really kinda crappy lately. After my 16 that turned into 10, and then a nagging pain in my hip I have really felt down. DH has been getting onto me like crazy because for some reason I have been letting that run psyche me out. I kind of felt like maybe I couldn't do it. Last night it all came to a head. DH and I actually got into an argument (kinda, but not really) about it. I was still feeling less than confident and I was already making excuses for why I wasn't gonna run the whole 9 miles that I had planned for today. He basically told me I was being stupid and I needed to shut up and get over it. That he knew, just as well as everyone else, that I could get the miles in. He told me I needed to quit making excuses and stop looking for reasons not to finish a run when I start getting tired. That I just needed to get out there and do it. God love him, when he's right he's right. I got out there this morning and got my 9 miles in and did it in 1:19:57 (avg 8:53 mpm). I have decided to cut back down to 3 days a week of running instead of 4. I think my body wasn't handling not have a break in between running days, hence the hip pain. I feel so much better after todays run though!! Like someone flipped a switch!! I am gonna fall back into my original plan where I was before, and I am looking forward to my 18 miler this Saturday!!

Also, just to keep everyone updated on my animal encounters while running. I don't think I told you guys about the Snapping Turtle that chased me on my 10 mile run (ya know, the one I bailed on). I was running near this pond that had a gate around it, and the turtle must have gotten out of the water at some point and when I came running up I scared him and he took off running back to the pond, which of course crossed my path. That was pretty freaky, that thing was huge. Today's however was much cuter. At mile 3 on my normal Rail Trail the two bikes that were in front of me had stopped, and I saw what looked like to large black dogs run across the path. When I caught up with them I realized it was two of the CUTEST little calfs. We call them OREO cows. They are black on the front and back with a white strip in the middle, and they were running all over the place. My heart melted just watching them!! For anyone who has never seen one this is what they look like.

Hi Everyone,

I have taken a few days off since my Half Marathon on Sunday. I wrote a race report on another thread, but the short story is my time was 1:54:45. I am very happy about that.

I ran an easy 3 miles today and felt pretty good. One hamstring was a bit tight. I'll run another easy run this weekend, then resume marathon training next week.

Lou: Sorry about the knee pain. Have you tried anything like glucosamine chondroitin? It might make a difference.

Dana: I'm glad your DH was able to help with a gentle reminder of what you are capable of. It's great to have that support.

Monte: Really sorry about the snow. I love snow in December and January, but October is way too early. I bet it's beautiful though.

Stephanie: Good luck with your busy schedule.

Cecilia: Nice job on the double run. Do you feel more tired during your second run?

Sorry to all I've missed, but I have to get some work done.

Have a great day.
Cindy

Hi WISHers!

I am pretty proud of myself today. I ran 16 miles in the same amount of time it took me to do the WDW half last year (2:39). It was a pretty good run. Started off overcast for the first 6 miles. Sun came out off and on for the next couple of miles. Then for the last 4 miles is rained. Just a sprinkle to start, but then it POURED! Every step I took I had water squishing up between my toes. I kept wringing out my shirt. I've never run in such a heavy rain before, but I had promised myself I'd get the 16 miles in so I did. That will be my longest run for a while; ToT next weekend followed by the Raleigh Half. I have no excuses for that race now; if I can do 16 I need to do that half.

This thread is so hard to keep up with! I apologize for those I'm missing, but I'll try to get everyone who posted today.

Kristi
– Tapering sounds like it’s just what you need right now! Get over that cold.

Eva – I always fall asleep watching movies! By the way, what is the quote under your screen name from?

WWDave – In my dream last night I was running a marathon and got lost; I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to follow route 93 or route 39.

Christa – Sorry you won’t be running ToT. Will you be at the party at MGM?

Tricia – I can just see us trying to run from the exit to the entrance of RnR after doing our 13K!

Lou – My body is actually doing well right now after having a sore hip for a few weeks. I would suggest icing the knees. DD’s doctor advises 20 minutes before the run and 20 minutes after.

Cecilia – I agree there are so many races I’d like to be doing. I am so sad that I can’t do the last Minnie!

Stephanie – Hope the kiddos woke up well; sound like the last thing you need right now is a sick kid!

Melissa – Kids have a bad habit of outgrowing everything too quickly! DS moved from size 7 jeans to size 10 in 6 months!

Monte – Brrr!

Bill – I sure hope it’s not that hot for ToT!

Dana – I understand completely looking for excuses. I got into that bad habit last year. Sor far this year, I’m doing a lot better. Good luck on your 18 miler! You'll do great.

Cindy – Great time on your half! Congratulations!

Happy training, all!
Renee

Tomorrow I am off to San Francisco for the Nike Women's Half. I cannot wait!!! I will be keeping a look out for Susie and Terri in their WISH shirts. This has been a total WTO week as I went to fit ball on Monday and otherwise have done nothing....no running....nothing! I feel like such a sloth...:sad2:

I turnaround and head down to WDW on Tuesday, so I can't wait to meet new people at the ToT race!

I have a herniated disc in my lower back that is pretty big and it's crushing a lot of my nerves in that area. I have been dealing with the pain since April and it had gotten pretty much unbearable and I have no reflexes left in my right ankle. Luckily the pain has eased up a little after it got to worse point it had been, but the problem is still there. I just want it gone so I can get back to training.

BULLS are all the talk in this town (as you would expect). In fact if you watch the game ESPN is going to cut into the huge student/fan party they are having at the USF sundome tonight. The very place I graduated in just 6 months a go. ((Stephanie - Yes USF is where I went.)

It's funny I did not think it was that great a school when I went there and I thought I "settled" because it's close to home and all. But for many reasons, not just football, I have become very proud to call USF my alumni. And I am very corny but what I accomplished there truly gave me an opportunity to give my kids a whole different life. :goodvibes

Sorry everybody for always getting off topic here and obsessing over football, but since I can't run so much I have to have something to occupy my time:confused3 Ok back to work

Dana Don't you hate it when they are right. Awesome job getting out there and I'm glad you had that GOOD run that gets you motivated again. The first time I ran 5 straight without stopping DH & I were on treadmills next to each other and he knew how bad I wanted to do it, but I REALLY thought I was going to puke right there in the middle of the gym, but he would NOT let me stop and I was so glad he didn't.
Cindy :cool1: AWESOME TIME - CONGRATULATIONS!! :cool1:
Renee Congratulations to you to. I am so impressed with your perserverance in the RAIN!!
Leana :cheer2: GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!! :cheer2:

OK now really back to work.

Dana, glad you are doing well now! I totally understand. Glad you are cutting back. I was worried you would get hurt with all that mileage.

I only run 3 (Sometimes 4 if I trail run with Bree.)days a week. I do bike, and xtrain by dancing too. I think that we as runners think that if we pile on the miles, it will make us better runners. That is not always true. I think to much of a good thing turns into a not so good thing. IE...too much running is bad...now that said, I do about 30 miles a week, but have worked up to that over the years.

And I am doing a 20 miler tomorrow!

Renee - That rain this morning was amazing. I can't believe you were stuck running in it! But who can complain - at least it was raining. Great time!

Dana - Hooray for DH for the pep talk. I think cutting back to 3 days is a good idea. I'm pretty sure my injury was a result of my trying to increase mileage on my shorter runs, so I'm all in favor of less is more!

I feel really good today after my walk/jog yesterday. Stretching seemed to be the difference between this one and last weekend when I hurt all over. I'm planning to meet up with my group on Saturday and do 3-4 miles as long as I'm still feeling okay.

Angie - I hear you. I went to Widener University in Chester, PA. The school is a great local university but doesn't get much national attention. We did have a good Div III football team and that was known for Billy "White Shoes" Johnson. However, I got a great education and can't complain. It's also where I met my wife so there is a sentimental value as well.

At least your Bulls will feel at home here. It's in the 70's tonight.

Dana - So true. The pain I feel goes away after the first 5 minutes of running. It's primarily hurts while walking and going down steps. Good thing I spend most of my days at a desk.

Cindy - I'll need to Google "glucosamine chondroitin" because I have never heard of it.

Renee - Ice does seem to work. I think ice is the way to go. I'll be wrapping ice packs around my knees tonight.

By the way, I did 5 miles this afternoon in Philly. I spent most of the run on dirt trails along the river which cut back on the pounding. It's still hot here which is not helping.

Well, I guess i don't have to feel guilty about skipping my 8 miler yesterday...

I went to get my allergy shots yesterday afternoon and had a systemic reaction! So, after being loaded up on lots of albuterol, allegra d, benedryl & zyrtec...they finally let me go home. With instructions just to go to bed. I didn't go to bed (to busy getting ready for my trip), but I wouldn't have been able to exercise in any case.

The good news is that I am now done allergy shots.
I was going to finish up in December, but we decided yesterday that I was done NOW! :rotfl:

We are flying down to FL in less than 24 hours.
I'll miss those of you not coming to ToT!

Kristi--Geez! Get yourself better!!!! Hope you're all packed up and ready to go!

Well, my 5 mile tempo run yesterday ended up being 4.25 miles cuz I was running late. And then I did 1 hr cardiotennis. Today is a rest day and then tomorrow is Race for the Cure. Haven't quite decided what to do tomorrow--me thinks I'll run the 5K and then try to track down my mom and sis who are walking. There are over 41,000 women registered for tomorrow--it will be awesome!
