Wk of Oct 1--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Christa - are you tapering for the trail? If so, I would get as much rest as possible. I always go for the more rested as opposed to the possibly too much approach. In fact, I'm about to take my own advice and take a nap!! :thumbsup2

Well I got those steps in this morning! 3 miles 14:05 pace. I was aiming for under 14 but since I havent done anything since DL I was happy with the pace.

Lily- I am planning on heading to the neighborhood across the street for my hill work. I have slight hills in mine, but I need to step it up a notch. Good reminder for everyone :thumbsup2 I always walk for my warm up & then stretch after because I also agree with no cold muscle stretching. One of DH friends kept trying to argue with me about that. Glad to see another runner support it!

Denny-so sorry you got sick. Dont push too hard. You have trained well enough to be able to scale back on that 5 miler if you need to. :wizard:

Christa-you wear me out just reading about all you do :faint:

Judy-glad you like the shoes. And you are definately doing enough mileage to warrant good shoes. If your feet go bad, you'll have to walk across the finish line on your hands ;)

Carrie- Rest days are very serious :woohoo:

Excellent tips, Lily :cheer2:

I looked up race walking and found a site that seems very useful for walkers:

http://www.racewalk.com

Look under technique for helpful tips.

According to this site, the top women's 10K result is 43:30-- that's a 7mpm pace :scared1:

Jody...maybe we're twins...I run in ASICs (Cumulus) for SR and Mizuno (Inspire) for LR. I have to admit, though, I am coveting DD13s new FILA Testament...they're like walking on a cloud.

Woo hoo - running twins :goodvibes

I never tried FILA......Mizuno is new to me, but had used ASIC throughout training ---- I really like the ASIC.

Hey guys, I wasn't going to let myself post again until I was a good girl & back on plan...Guess what? Today is a rest day! :lmao: I am SO on plan! :rotfl2:

I think it was Mel that was asking about weight lost for our WISH team. Anywho - I am down roughly 30 lbs. since 10/04.

Well, I followed your advise and passed on my run tonight. I'm still coughing endlessly in the evenings. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will pass before this weekend.

Tigerlily03 - I'll be wearing "the shirt" also. I'll be looking for you. It'll be nice to meet a fellow WISH team member. Good Luck.

Hey All! Back from dance rehearsal. :dance3:
Thanks for all the good advicee. I did swim a 1.25 miles today. It felt good and I didn't push too hard. Took me a hour. I may just take it easy the rest of the week.....Help me do this! :smokin:
The winner in my age group for this marathon finished in 4:40 (I think). This scares me, but I am also excited! :woohoo:

Hey all - Cam, I feel your pain. I and the blisters are well acquainted. That one on my foot from DL is still there (although thankfully now not so much a blister as an odd patch of skin).

Michelle: That's good news about your inhaler, just remember when you start running that you should be able to speak short sentences while you run, if you can't you're going to fast, which will make it all hurty and miserable!!!! If you can have entire conversations about the state of life, the universe and everything you're apparently going too slow - which might explain a lot about my own race speeds!!!!!!

Sara: We definitely got hit with the same mood stick after the full, I've not been able to get properly back in training since, I think it was such a challenge that it was kind of all consuming and I've just not got back into a routine since. I have a horrible feeling this is why people like my running buddy now do 5 marathons a year instead of 5 halves - maybe we just need to make that transition rather than the 'I'm going to retire' one. How about we aim for Goofy 08 together?

I'm off to try and work on my speed a bit tonight, going to do a nice steady 4km warm up, then do the 5km race at the running club, which I have to do less than 30 minutes (that's fast for me). Trainer man is also taking me pace running in the morning - I'm not sure what that is, but I think it's going to involve wheezing sounds!!. Mind you, I have to knock 21 minutes off my DL time in 29 days so the miles they need to be covered - Helen

Hi Team,

Just a quick post right now -

Did some training last night, although, not very happy with it. I only did three miles on the threadmill......after those three miles I wasn't feeling so good and decided not to push it!

Judy - Thank you for the avatar! Oh - were you able to find out more about that 5k in New Canaan -- just really curious.

Thank you all for your advice about the Marathon vs. Half Marathon. Looking forward to the race -- I'm going to try and take pictures of this one.....there will be bands along the way, etc.

Well - have a good day everyone!

Denny - :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: That you're feeling better soon! And good luck this weekend!

Helen - You crack me up! Good to have you back more regularly!

CHrista - You can do it! Rest, rest, rest!

Kristi - Lol. I hope I see you again today!!

jodi - Good decision not to push! Remeber, we need those bad days to make those good days better! ;)

Michelle - Hope that new inhaler worked! COngrats on the doc being sopleased with your weight loss!

Tiff - Great job. Post race is very hard to get back into the swing again. WIthin 5 seconds is awesome!

Sunny - Hope recovery from your race is going well!

Lily - That is too cool that you met a pro and we parallel him so closely!

Cam - You mentioned teh jog being a bit of a rest fro your muscles. Reminded me how much a r/w used to hurt. I know we've said this before, but just a reminder that walking is really hard!

OK, I was so proud of myselfo for finally gettign abck to Curves for XT. Just checked teh schedule, though and I cshould have done another lap around the circuit. :( I'll get back into it one of these days.

Hi, everyone!
No training last night, though no residual pain from my 8+ Monday, so that's good. Today is supposed to be a rest day, but my schedule is off because of the LW, so I am going to do some cross-training tonight (probably the bike or elliptical).

I went back to weight watchers meetings last night. I've lost more than 50 pounds since my heart surgery and some before that (scared to tell the anesthesiologist how much I weighed  ) but I really want to lose another 20 before the Full. I have to get my butt in gear to start eating with at least as much discipline as the training.

Oh no, please. Not now. Not now! On noooo, please, no! :guilty:

Yesterday I got up from my desk and felt something happen in my "old" knee. It's hard to describe but it sounded like, well, meat snapping. I've never actually been stabbed but now I think I know how it feels. It felt just like a knife went into the back of my knee. After a little while it felt better, but then it happened again later in the afternoon. Not the snapping sound but the stabbing pain. Laying in bed last night it hurt pretty badly. And now this morning BOTH my knees are tremendously swollen up.

I could cry. I could just cry. :sad1:

I suppose I should call Dr Hunk-A-Hunka Burning Love. But he's an orthopedic surgeon. He's going to say I need surgery. I just know it.

I feel sick. :sad2:

Today was my first official MFM rest day. So that is what I did.

[Colleen - In case I revert back into lurkerdom for another week or so :confused3 , best of luck in Chicago. I know you'll kick butt!! :woohoo:

I am still putting in the steps without my head in the game. My runs are great and I have no complaints. I think I have just lost the passion. I told DH that I think WDW '07 will be my last marathon.

Best of luck to all with training this week. I will post next week to disclose whether or not I went 26.2 on Sunday. LOL!!

Sara, thanks so much! I am not sure what my time will be in Chicago, but I know I will have a great time. My running buddy is a lot of fun.

Yes, training is and can be very grueling, I can understand how a person can be down in the dumps, we have ALL been there. After this race, just take some time off and I am sure the passion will come storming back. Afterall, you and I are doing Marine Corps next right, right!! :thumbsup2 I am pretty sure that my running buddy will do it too.

Good luck in your decision. Remember, you are a very busy lady but things will fall back into place for you! :wizard:

Colleen

Oh, Judy, I am so sorry you are in pain. I hope that what you felt was nothing substantial and your knees are just tired and recovering from the race. Have you been icing them? I am glad you are resting. How are they feeling now? Can you elevate and do ice at work? Sending you pixiedust: and :goodvibes:

Oh, Judy, so sorry, try and get the swelling down for now. Elevate and ice frequently if you can. :wizard:

Cam, 50 pounds, that is so great!! :cool1:

Carrie, good job on your cross training. I am going to take cross training more seriously too. I like that advice the pro running guy gave Lily, some novices just run, run, run and some of those of 'empty' miles. One is better off getting in the pool or resistance training for some of those sessions.

Jodi, good luck on your race. I am glad you decided to run the half instead of the full. You certainly don't want to get injured now.

Christa, taper, taper taper. I know it is hard, but you can do it! Good luck on your run. (P.S. I think you can beat that time from last year's age class winner!) :woohoo:

Tiff, I am always amazed at your walking pace. You go girl! I hope you are doing well and your body is cooperating! :thumbsup2

Sunny, great job on the Applefest. I am so impressed considering what you have been through in past few months.

MelR, how is the boy doing? Is he enjoying pre-school?

Well, my training is going well. I am happy to report that my friend and I got our 20 miles this weekend. Now it is taper time!! We ran about 11 minute miles. We are very happy with that. :thumbsup2 This is her first marathon and she is doing so well. I went for a massage this morning, ah, it was sooooo good. I am basking in my after-massage glow :sunny: and don't want to do a thing, I think today will be a rest day.

Colleen

Hey all, today is rest day. This is a good thing since my back is aching.

Judy - Oh dear. I hope you are OK. Get some ice on those knees. You may want to get checked out if the pain doesn't go away! BIG piles of PD coming your way!!! pixiedust:

DH found this on You Tube. He thought I would enjoy it and I thought you all would enjoy it!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYQrP8LBM3E

I have tons of work that needs to get done, so I better get my hinder off the internet!!!

Colleen - Way top go on the 20-miler! Isn't it an awesome feeling to know you have done that???

Cam - Glad you're recovering well from teh 8-miler. Non-level surfaces and lots of turns can be so hard on a body!

Judy!!! :guilty: Hope those knees get better soon! Better be icing them or I'll come find you! ;) :wizard:

Jen - Hope those aches go aeway soon!! :wizard:

Don't panic Judy! It will be okay. Sending lots of :wizard: your way. Hey, at least you have an excuse to see Dr. McDreamy. ;)

I did the elliptical and weights at the gym yesterday for my xt. Today I walked for 60 minutes. I envy those of you with rest days on Wednesday. My MfM walk/run marathon training program eliminates my Weds. rest day. Instead I have long walks on Weds.

I finally broke down yesterday and shelled out the $$$$ for a video ipod. I am bribing myself to get through my long runs. I plan on loading episodes of LOST and the Office and some movies. It will make my time on the TM go by faster (at least that's the theory). I am hoping that the weather is cooler this weekend so I can do my 6 miles outside. Next week for my LR I will be in San Francisco. Please someone reassure me that there is someplace flat to run in the Bay Area! I have to go 10 miles, and all I've seen of SF on t.v. is big, big hills.

:wave2: I read this thread often but have only posted once or twice because I have difficulty keeping up with all of you! I have read some great advice and have been inspired by many of you.
I am training for the 1/2 marathon. I am a beginner and will probably be walking.
My DH bought me a Garmin Forerunner 205 - I love it! BUT I don't know how to get all the info from it that I want. I need help from the experts!!!

My Question: How do I get my split times from it?
For example:
I walked 3 miles today
average pace 15:17
total time 45:52 minutes
I know that the first mile I walked much slower than the last two. Is there a way to "look up" my time for each mile? Do I need to program something BEFORE I start each day? HELP PLEASE!!!!

I think your menu is dif. from my 201, but I have an auto lap function. That is set for 1 mile. That will give me an alarm every mile and if I hit on eof the scroll buttons when it goes off, it will give me my lap time, which will be my split. Ater that, I go into history and go by day or week, I don;t think teh last run function gives you as much data. Anyway, your splits wil be in there. Please pop in mire! You don't have to keep up, just let us know how you're doing!

ETA: The auto lap is a one-time thing. No need to do it every time you go out.
