Wk Of Nov 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

WTPCLC - Thanks, I will wait until late January then & be on the lookout for your posts, BTW I have relatives in the Traverse City area ...

lol. Just dont' push until after I'm back from marathon. ;) TC is a beautiful area! You'll have to ocme visit for a race and mini WISH meet.

Love to - just keep me informed as to when they are. Any meets or races = always a good thing :cool1:

Since I'm a Mouseketeer I wonder if I could put Mickey Ears on my Avatar Pic. (LOL)

Oooh, my parents used to go salmon fishing up near Traverse City, and I would go visit them when I was at the UofM in Ann Arbor. Beautiful area... that would be a fun marathon to do out on the Leelenau Pennisula.

Welcome cguill! Looks like ya got a great stride there!;)

Carrie, sorry you are having hammy issues! Jodi recommended Chi running to me too when my knee pain became unbearable. I am so busy with PT now that I haven't had a chance to finish it. Hope Dr. Scott can help!;)

Dana, once again awesome performance!:woohoo:

Krista, you were a lot skinnier a few years ago? You must have been a waif!

Cam, thanks for posting those ToT pictures! Can't wait to see you and Howard again this January!

Oh Jackie, please take care of yourself girl! I know it is really hard, I shed a few tears not being able to run MCM this year after 17 weeks of training, but I am glad I made that decision now. I still can't run, Dr., said it will be OK to walk so I am focusing on getting my knee better so I am not hobbling around when I am 70.

Hi Stephanie! Get well, the snifflies and sore throat went through our house 1 1/4 times (DD sick twice!) Just postpone your LR for a few days if you can.

Martha, great job on your 60 minute run yesterday!

Oh, Leana, I could never eat the poutine, I was able to stomach a little salty gravy, but not both.

Judy, I didn't know Charlie was running the full! How is his training coming along?

As for training, I am doing a lot of walking, 60 minutes today, pool running (45 minutes yesterday), a few ellipticals thrown in and my new favorite YOGA! Loving that yoga, should have started this years ago, but there are just not enough hours in the day. If I had time, I would go to yoga every day!

Got 5.14 miles in over lunch today - it was a beautiful day out for a run and it felt so good to be out there. I finished up in 53:48 for a 10:29/mi pace.

Mel - We're lucky. Even though the football team made the playoffs, we're away this weekend and the band isn't traveling with the team. We only have the Christmas parade to go, then the rest is just classroom stuff.

Mike - Hooray for doing the 8 miles even when you didn't feel like it. I'm having one of those weeks and every step is a struggle, so I totally applaud you for getting it done!

Panda Dave - We leave in 63 days. No, it's never too early!

Lisa - There's nothing wrong with 3 miles. Galloway told us we really only have to run 3 miles 2x/week in addition to our long run. I know most plans call for a lot more than that, but he claims you can prepare for a marathon doing it that way.

Dana - You are Wonder Woman! First of all, for making it to the bathroom in time, then for running 10.5 miles on the treadmill with no sleep? You deserve a reward tonight!

All right, all right. Since not one of you told me it was probably okay to keep running, I'll call the doctor and see if I can get a professional opinion. Maybe I'm overreacting to the pain and it's really nothing...

In the meantime, I'm supposed to do 3 miles today - it ain't happenin'. Mike and Dana may have what it takes to get it done; I don't!

Jackie

I'll post this on the marathon weekend events thread as well, but wanted to mention that DD19 will be with us marathon weekend and is now accepting babysitting engagements. :lmao: Really, she was coming to take care of a friends' kids, but the kids aren't coming so she said she'd baysit for other WISH team members if I wanted to extend the offer and coordinate it.

Shoot me a PM.

Can someone explain tapering to me? I have read about it here, and in MFM, but still just dont get it??? Wouldnt it be better to keep going right up until the race, then cut back after to recover?

Cam--that is so sweet of your DD! I would be all over that, but FIL invited himself along. So he gets the kids in exchange for our "hospitality";)

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm feeling much better now than yesterday at this time. those antibiotics have worked wonders. Hoping to have some training to report in the near future!

Oh, and I picked up my Dyson today. And I'm in vacuum cleaner heaven! Thanks for all the advice!

Angie--the whole philosophy behind tapering for a marathon or any endurance event is to give your body time to recover from the intense training you've been doing for several months before you put the body through the rigors of a full race. Tapering is more important than ever if: 1.) your race is a distance longer than what you've done in training or 2.) you plan to run the race harder (ie--with more effort) than your training.

I believe early marathoners did not taper before marathons, but research and experience has taught endurance athletes that a proper tapering period does not decrease fitness and muscle, but actually increases energy and allows a well-deserved rest for the body in preparation for the "big day."

If you were to train hard right up until the day of the race, your body would be overly tired and you could set yourself up for injury by forcing a longer distance on tired legs.

The taper period can play all sorts of games on your mind (hence the taper madness that everyone talks about around here) since you've been training so hard for so long and all of the sudden, you are cutting back on your mileage significantly. But trust all of those who have done it in the past--it really does work.

Hope this helps!

Steve

Krista - my fellow diet coke junkie is down to one measley can a day?! ;) Man! I keep trying to cut down to 2 per day, and haven't succeeded yet. I really need to work on that!

Today was a scheduled rest day, so I scrapbooked all afternoon.
Tomorrow is 40 mins. xt. I won't be able to get out of that since I have to be at the Y with Zack for swim class anyway. Might as well workout while I am there, right?

I feel a bit silly for going to eat at the Canadian restaurant, but I'm curious to see what constitutes Canadian food, because despite the fact that I live here I feel a bit clueless about it. The only remarkable Canadian food I know is poutine. Fries with gravy and cheese curds....yummy!
Leana - Sadly, no poutine at Le Cellier.:sad2: My dad is from the boonies in Quebec and most of his family still lives in the same little town. My cousin use to own the poutine stand there. That and Grandma's meat pies are the only foods I associate as "Canadian".

Dana - Did you count the race to the bathroom as speed work? Good job on the run. I have trouble running that fast on a TM.

Cam - Be sure to tell Howard we are not trying to avoid him:laughing: . Too many races, too little time! Be sure to let us know what your impressions of the Philly race are.

Judy - Way to threaten that knee! Gotta let it know who's boss.

Krista - Keep your stinkin' cans of Steeler swill! Now if you want to forward along some cans of Iron City (do they still brew that?), feel free.

Jackie - Yah, what they said about seeing a doctor.

Martha - Great job on the 60 minutes. How many minutes do you have on tap for this weekend?

I got in 5 miles this evening. No muss, no fuss.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning Team

Yesterday this tech caveman learned to view his bank statement on line. I even tried a transfer to savings. Really intense stuff, I'm sweating already.

Today's schedule is 4 miles on the hills. It's 47 degrees so I can do that without freezing. After the walk training I'll do core work and stretching, yes I will. No more lazy Panda.

Little survey couriousity this morning: How many people on the board drink milk regularly and do you drink whole, skim or 2%?

The only milk I use is skim on my cereal in the mornings. I use a tiny bit of cream in my coffee in reastraunts but at home I use the liquid coffee mate.

Have an awesome friday and great training today Team Mates.

Warrior Panda:hippie:

WWDave: Congrats on the online banking. Isn't technology great!!

I drink 16 oz of skim milk and 16 oz of soy milk a day. Soy gives you the same benefit as cow's milk without the lactic acid. I use soy milk on my cereal in the morning. I do admit to powder creamer in my coffee. DH makes is mighty strong in the morning so I do it out of self defense. For a treat sometimes, my kids like vanilla soy milk so I get that for them on cereal in the morning.

Hi Everyone-

My beloved rest day has arrived! Ahhh. Between a minor cold and 40+ mile weeks, I need my rest days!

Now how is this for crazy....I have to work Wednesday, but I want to get to the expo on Thursday with plenty of time to buy Goofy merchandise. So....I'm taking a red eye at midnight on Wednesday and I get in at 1 pm on Thursday. I can sleep fairly well on planes so here's hoping I don't regret this crazy decision later....
Actually, I think it is perfect. The WDW marathon messes up your entire internal clock anyway so why not? You have to get up at 3am to get on a bus by 4am to sit and wait until 6am to run until 8am then you take a nap and start all over only to run twice as far the next day. I think arriving at 1am makes perfect sense! lol.

I want to get through the Goofy without looking and feeling like I was hit by a charging rhino.
Oh now THAT is the perfect goal, can I steal it? I keep telling people I just want to finish on my feet, but I like your goal much better!

Dana - you ARE amazing! A sick kid is supposed to be a legit excuse for missing a run! So is no sleep. Remind me to line up BEHIND you at the marathon!

I drink 8 oz of skim milk twice to three times a day. By the way, milk is now $4.22 a gallon in Georgia. Ouch.
Also, I am trying something new this week, its called NuVim and its at WalMart in an OJ carton. Its supposed to be good for you and tastes like it. I usually drink a glass of milk immediately after a run but I am using this stuff instead. I haven't decided whether or not to recommend it yet.

Have a great day everyone,
Cecilia

Heading down to Denver tomorrow morning to train with TNT...my fund raising is over $7,000!

HI Team!!! Wednesday I did 50 minutes on the TM and last night I went to bootcamp. Bootcamp kicks my butt but I really like it for cross training. Tomorrow I have 14 miles on queue. That will be my longest mileage to date, so I am a little scared about it. Mostly because it is sooooo cold here and we have the possibility of rain. I have no clue if I will be running indoors or outdoors. 30 degrees with rain doesn't sit well with me for running.

Dana - Isn't it amazing how fast we move when a child is ready to vomit????

Cam - That is really nice of your daughter. My DH will be with the kids, otherwise I would take you up on the offer!!!

Leana - Oh that poutine looks yummy. We are so close to the Canadian border that we have some of the same foods here. Like the meat pies that Mike mentioned and of course cheese curds (but haven't had gravy on them before!)

OK, work is absolutely nuts for me so I get little time to chat with you all. GOOD LUCK to all the LR's and Races this weekend.

YAY!! I actually got a full night's sleep last night!! I crashed at like 9pm!! Today is a rest day, well if you count housework as resting. Maybe I should consider it XT!! Michael got 2 miles in when he got home from school yesterday. He is really in a get up and go mode with his running now that football is over. None of the usual fussing. And he's even running faster.

Well... I am off to clean out my car and give it a good bath. I'll check back in later.

Dana
