Wk Of Nov 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Krista- Go Steelers tonight!!! I can't stand the Ravens.

Hey, now! The Ravens may stink this year, but they're not worth hating. ;)

Plus, since they employ DH during the season I have to come to their defense.

Although...If the Ravens miss the playoffs, then DH can join me and the kids for WDW marathon weekend. Hmmm... That's almost (but not quite) enough reason to root for the Steelers. :rotfl:

Kelley--I have to respecfully disagree. The Ravens are the one team in the NFL that I would have to throw into that "hate" category. Probably because they used to be the Browns, and everyone in Pittsburgh still considers them the Browns, and we all know how the Steelers and Browns get along. :)

We'll try to help you out in tonight's game and make sure the Ravens do indeed miss the playoffs. ;)

Of course, you know this is all in good fun! :thumbsup2

Krista--So, are you saying there's not going to be a new "very little" WISHer joining us in Jan???? ;) In that case, I'm all for you running! You go girl; even if you do root for that black and gold team---but they didn't play the Browns this weekend, so I can root for them.

Steve--have to agree with you about the Ravens. Even Browns fans dislike them b/c the team was taken out of Cleveland and renamed! Amazing how Steelers fans and Browns fans can agree on something! Take care of that knee!

sara74--I would recommend, if at all possible, to include a rest day before your LR/LW day. The muscles need some time to rest and rebuild. And with no rest before your LR, it could make those longer distances really hard and unpleasant as the mileage increases.

SWDave--I think it would be a hoot if you requested to get updates on all the WISHers at Disney--imagine all the text messages you would get! Did I mention before that I think you need the Minnie to complete the set???;)

Should be a rest day for me today, but b/c of other work commitments, I need to get in a little run this afternoon. I figure ending my LR yesterday at 8:15 and starting today's easy run at 4pm should be okay. Hope everyone has a great start to the week

Oh, and on a totally unrelated, off topic, topic; Does anyone own a Dyson Vacuum? Our cheapo vacuum started shooting sparks at me on Friday (definite sign to stop cleaning!;) ) so we're in the market for a new one. The price of the Dyson makes me want to faint, but it's worth it, I'm getting it!

Well, we don't have any surprises yet, so I figured if I do get a surprise between now and January, the furthest along I could possibly be is 8-9 weeks, which I don't think would an issue for a half marathon. Not that a half marathon is a short distance by any means, but I've already done 1 full and 4 halfs, so I know what to expect. Plus, if I have to walk a half, I can do it in about 3 hours, so that's not that bad--not like walking a full! Of course I would talk to my doctor about all of this if I need to and take his advice 100%.

Did anyone see that Katie Holmes ran the NYC marathon yesterday? She finished in 5:29--finally a celebrity with a realistic finish time!

Kelley--Sorry, but I HATE the Ravens, the only time I've ever rooted for them was Monday night against the Bengals. I'm going to stop talking now, because I don't want you hating me!!!

Krista: I emailed for info this morning to Marathon Tours and just got a response that they are completely sold out.....:guilty:

I know the Dyson is expensive but trust me when I say it is TOTALLY WORTH EVERY PENNY. It seems silly that a vacuum cleaner could be so great but it's one of the best things I've ever owned.

OK, I have to stop posting how far I plan to run before I do it. Get up this morning, DD6 pooh: says she feels sick and can't go to school. So I take DD9 princess: to chorus, and come right back home to take care of DD6 pooh: while DW goes to work. I get back home and DD6 ppoh: says she is going to to go school now. Sheesh... I'm glad she can go to school, but I missed going to the gym before work. Now, I will try to squeeze in a run after work.

Go Steelers!!! And, yes, growing up in Pittsburgh during the 70's gave me a healthy hatred of the Cleveland Browns that continued when they moved to Baltimore. However, I now dislike the Ravens even more than the Brownies. I dislike them for their own merits, they just seemed so "thuggy" when they won their SuperBowl. Although, I have to say the Bungles seem a lot more like convicts than the Ravens do now.

One of my running partners and I are considering running Marine Corps next year. It is close to Baltimore so my dad might be able to come watch if he is still here. I think he would like that. Did you like it and would you recommend it? When do they start registration?

Cecilia
Hi Cecilia :wave2: I LOVED the Marine Corps Marathon. It was a great race, well organized, and the Marines were incredible. My Dad is in Delaware, so he drove up and picked me up at BWI and we spent the weekend together. We went to one of the museums, and he was all over the course to see me. We had a great time. Dad even has his own WISH t-shirt now. I have to say, the WISH group of runners, and having my Dad there really made the race for me. I would definitely recommend the race. I think they start registration in May, and last year it closed out in about 2 weeks. I was able to get a registration through Jeff Galloway's training group in late August though. Good thing I was training.

Kevin - You there yet?

YES!!!!

While I shouldn't bore everyone with the details... here's the trip in summary:

2.5 days
29 hours
1505 miles
1 Newfoundland
1 Very nice Hampton Inn in Murfreesboro, TN
1 Not as Nice HoJo in Ocala, FL
$17.00 in Florida Turnpike tolls
16 Rest Area/Fuel stops
Prettiest State to Drive through: Kentucky, hands down
Most Boring State to Drive through: Indiana, no question
Worst Drivers: the residents of Nashville, TN :scared1:
Worst Rest Areas: Indiana (again)
Best Rest Areas (facilities): Florida
Best Rest Areas (location): Tennessee (there are some gorgeous ones on I-24 coming thtough the mountains....)

IN any case, it's over, I'm getting settled and I'm happy to be here. The weather is gorgeous and I love the area so far.

Today I did about 4 miles through the new neighborhood (in about 38 minutes), which is... small. I definately need to go to the USTF planner site and find some new routes for my LLRs.

Congrats to everyone on their LLRs this weekend!!! Sounds like everyone is doing really well. I am definately feeling behind the 8 ball with Goofy right now, but I've got two months and gorgeous training weather... if I stick to my guns and follow the plan, I hope I'll be OK.

Well, off to unpack a bit more...
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Morning everyone. I have been posting mostly on the walkers thread. It was great meeting so many WISHers at ToT. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Jan.

Back into training, Did 10 miles on Sat in cool conditions was 38 degrees. What a change from Sat night at ToT.

DH dislikes the Ravens because of the Colts sneaking out in the middle of the night and to him the Ravens are not a Baltimore team and the Colts don't belong in Indianapolis. However, DS#2 is a huge Raven's fan which are not having the best year. DS#2 is going to the bar to watch the Steelers and Ravens so I don't have to listen to him yelling at the TV. DH and I will be rooting for the Steelers tonight.

Nancy

Boy are my legs tired today! After the 3 hours of running yesterday I guess they deserve to be tired. Apparently I wasn't all there either, mental-wise after the run. DH and DD certainly had some fun with that! As long as I didn't play with sharp objects, I was OK. And I had a great excuse to sit my butt on the couch and watch all the football I wanted. Rest day today and well deserved, I might add.

Kevin: welcome to your new home! I hope things settle in nicely and your job goes well.

Stephanie: yup, sparks from the vacuum cleaner means "stop cleaning!" I have a Eureka so I don't know anything about that brand.

MSDave: we'll forgive you being a Steelers fan. But you and Krista must sit in the corner until after the Pats game in December. OK, not really.....sorry to hear you didn't get to the gym early today. I hope you make it there after work. Oh, and I will route for the Steelers tonight. I've picked them over Baltimore in our office pool.

Sabrina: good luck on the running! Let us know how the training goes! :cheer2:

Have a great day everyone!

Stephanie - I own a Dyson DC14 Animal and I love it! You would be amazed all the pet hair this baby picks up. It is an expensive vacuum cleaner, but I definitely think it is worth it.

OK, so this weekend I had my 5 mile race on Saturday, then 15 miles scheduled for Sunday. The race on Saturday was fine - finished in about 51:30. We slept in, had breakfast, drove back from Banff and picked the dogs up from kennel. I had a bite to eat and was out the door at 2:30 pm, so I didn't start running until just after 3 pm. It was about -1C (29F) and a few flakes in the air, and some packed snow in areas on the ground, but for the most part the pathways were clear. Only one word can describe my long run this weekend. DUMB... Apparently 3 pm is too late because it is completely dark by 6 pm (thanks time change!). I opted to go run around Glenmore Reservoir and the direction I took had me completely in the forested area (as opposed to the residential side) to finish up the run. The legs were feeling OK throughout, but with 3 or 4 miles left to go it is getting pretty dark and pretty quiet. I'm getting nervous so I cut the walk breaks out and just keep running. With 2 miles left to go I see a sign warning that a bear pooh: has been sighted in the area. I freak out and call my friend. She advises me to keep going, but to sing the entire way along so that I don't startle the bear (if it is still around). I haven't checked my Garmin, but I'm willing to bet those last few miles were fast... One runner passes me and comments that it sounds like I'm having a good time out there and I mention that it is because I'm freaked out about the bear warning sign. He mumbles something about at least not being surprised by a bear and blows past me. I finished up with something like 15.37 miles although I haven't checked the Garmin to be sure. I have never been so happy to see my car... I guess the good news is that by that point in time the distance felt easy and the legs are feeling okay today (sore knees a bit last night).

So....what did I learn from this?
- Don't start a long run so late in the day
- Stick to more populated areas

Stephanie, love, love, love my Dyson! One of the best investments I ever made.

The carpets actually feel different after I vacuum, like walking on a cloud! It definitely picks up everything!

I bought mine at Kohls and waited until they had a 30% off code that I could use online. The only thing is you need a Kohls charge card to use the 30% off code.

ETA: There is a 30% off code out right now enter "givethanks" for the code online.

Stephanie (and all the rest of you with more experience than I have!)- Still trying to figure out a good schedule with me having 'mandatory' rest days on Monday and Wednesday - I'm working those days and DH is often gone until the kids are in bed. So if those are my rest days, then what day would you do the long run?

With the running planet schedules they have you do a short run, then a hill or speed workout the next day, then a rest and then three days of running, culminating in the long run. They have you rest the day after the long run, not the day before. The day before the long run they have you do a shorter run, like a 2 mile run in the 10K schedule.

With me trying to switch things up I end up doing a short run, then a rest, then hill, run, short, long and rest again. I know it would be ideal to have 2 runs between my rest days but I really can't swing it. Do you have any suggestions on how to arrange things best? It isn't an issue now, but as the distance increases I agree that it could become one.

Thanks!!

Cecilia

I'll echo what Dave said. I highly recommend it. The best way to get in is to pick up a race application at the WDW Expo. It's supposed to get you a guaranteed entry.

Chester

Sara: is it possible for you to do the long run on Tuesday? That would give you a rest day, long run then another rest day. That's how I've got my schedule working. I do better on a LR if I've had a rest day before. And with the really long runs now, I like the rest day the day after also.

Just a thought but see if it works for you.
