Wk of Nov 26--WISH Walking/Running Club

Well, I did more training over the weekend than I thought I would, though nothing to write home about. Thursday, I walked to and from the beach house with a friend for the Turkey Bowl (flag football on the beach) and I think it was about 3.6 miles. Then, on Friday, I seriously overslept, but dragged myself out into the glorious 68 degree sunshine and did 8.4 miles on the bike path that runs most of the length of the island. I was actually pretty impressed with myself. I thought I’d go 2 miles and come back, but I felt so good and it was so nice out that I decided to go until 4 or coffee, whichever came first. I got to 4.2 without finding coffee and turned back. I LOVE the out-and-back method of training. Something mental, I am sure, but knowing I was heading back to the resort and not being exhausted on the outbound part of the course really helped.

I had loaded some new music on my shuffle and that helped, too. Here is what I put on:
Mountains by Lonestar
Please Mr. DJ by Rihanna
Lifetime Love by Keith Urban
If You’re Going Through Hell by Rodney Atkins
Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson

The bad news is that I just didn’t love the kayanos as I’d hoped and my feet were sore and I got a blister just behind the arch of my right foot on the inside edge. UGH! I have resigned myself to doing the full in the slippers/boats that are my New Balance 1122s. I am going to suck it up and pay an outrageous amount of money at a place on-line that sells discontinued shoes. And my feet will be very happy! :cool1:
Welcome Back Cam! Hope you, Howard, and the kids had a great time at HHI. Did your daughter get some good study time in? I must admit I was a little dissapointed to hear you were going to HHI over Thanksgiving because I was going to see if we could meet up briefly on my way back to Rochester from my folks house. We had a beautiful weekend in Delaware. We were even able to take the princesses to the beach one day. Great job on your training... you were much better than I.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Nooo! No! No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I just came back from the orthopedic surgeon.

Remember about two months ago I said I was at work and got up from my desk and it felt like I got stabbed in the back of the knee? My old knee, not the one that had the surgery last year. It was bothering me on and off so I figured I better go have it looked at. The doctor sent me for am MRI. Today he tells me I have a complex tear of my meniscus.

He said it's a simple procedure that should take ten minutes. No PT, no brace. I can walk on it right after the procedure. Just no running for three weeks. And...I should do it right away, before it gets worse.

I sat there with a quivering lip, unable to respond.

Then I stammered out.....No, I can't do this now.

We discussed it, thru my tears.

He said he can not recommend I continue to train and run the Half.

I told him I had to do it. I told him he didn't understand. I HAVE to DO THIS. I was crying pretty good by then so I think he got the point. So he said OK, we can put it off until after. If he has to take more out, then he just will.

So my surgery is scheduled for January 12th.

I'm going to pretend this never happened. I will now just forget about it until we get back.

Oh no Judy, I'm sooooo sorry this has happened. Take care of yourself, and make sure you don't do irreparable damage.

I promise I'll try to catch up tomorrow. :)

Judy - :O :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: (Feel free to pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, as you've forgotten all about today. ;) )

Me too.

Judy--- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Ok, thinking out loud for a second , If you had the surgery tomorrow, that'd three weeks out would put you at December 18. If you can walk in the interim, then you shouldn't lose much stamina at all. Then get a couple good long runs/walks in and start taper on 12/20.

I'm just thinking that I want you around to be able to do this again in 2008 (and '09 and '10). And you'd have a clean bill of health before the half.

We'll be with you whatever you decide (at about 9am, at the finish line :thumbsup2 )

Kevin :earsboy:

Oh Kevin, you sweet, sweet thing.

He couldn't do it for two weeks. Besides, just about every single thing in my life right now is focused on the Half. I know, it sounds crazy but it's true. I live by my training schedule. We put the Christmas tree up yesterday just so I could get it out of the way. I love the holidays but this year it's just a distraction. Ok if this sounds obsessive, maybe it is. But I can't stop now, I just can't. It doesn't even hurt when I train. It's only sometimes when I get up after sitting for a while.

Oh Kevin, you really are a doll! I'll be there in '08, and '09 and hopefully for as long as I'm around! This is really a lot of fun and I am enjoying myself immensely and I absolutely can not believe I am saying those words about exercise! :faint:

Thank you Dave, and Carrie, although I have no idea what you are talking about. :teeth:

Judy - I agree with Kevin. Plus, you have gotten so speedy lately, I am sure you can still finish before the sweepers. Remember, it's not about the speed, it's the finishing. Make the best choice for you, we are all here supporting you in whatever you do. GO TEAM GREEN!

Judy - oh no!!! I agree with Kevin too. Just be sure you are not doing further damage. I too want you around in '08, '09... Does he maybe have a waiting list for someone that cancels a procedure & he could squeeze you in? This is Dr. hunka hunka burnin' love isn't it? In any case, just take care of yourself, ok? :wizard:

Sunny - LOVE the penguin!!! Christmas light pics are so hard to take. They never look nearly as good as they do in person. I will get pics of ours once Chad is done. He is on the roof as I write this. He has about 30 snowflakes up there, set to timer box thingies to make them all randomly blink as if it were snowing. LOVE the Ramones story! At least you were younger when you were acting like this - I am too old for acting like this for goodness sake! :rotfl:

:offtopic: yet again....
I am the luckiest girl on the freakin' planet lately! I finagled my way onto the guest list at the Mix 98.5 Lounge this Friday afternoon. 2 guesses who is performing?! :teeth:

And I entered an online contest at another radio station for a set of tix to Friday night's show (in case the seats they give away are closer than my 8th row). And I won!!! They are overnighting them to me today.

I am so going to by a lottery ticket on my way to the gym tonight!

Judy! JU-DEE! What's up with this! Hey GF, contact LisaLovesPooh. I think she had something done b4 the event and did manage to finish ok. I'm with Kevin on this too. We're here for you, please don't damage you. Hey, if you do get fit into the doc schedule conveniently, you could hang back of the pack and party your way to the finish with me! Or, jump back and party anyway so ya don't damage things further.

Kristi, you've got me laughin' here. What fun! I know you will enjoy.

Judy -- Oh, Noooooo!! I am right there with you, supporting you in whatever you decide to do, sweetie, but I really WISH you'd consider dialing it back some on the running so that you don't put any more wear and tear than necessary during your training. We all know you are focused and determined, but please also add cautious and smart to your personality description, sweetie. I am glad that the doctor relented on the timing, but you MUST take it easy between now and then. Sending prayers and pixiedust your way.

Lily -- Thanks for putting the packing lists on a separate thread. That should help.

Dave -- I am sorry we weren't around this weekend. It would have been great to see you and the princesses. I am really sorry that your mother is doing poorly. I know that is so difficult to see and I'm sure the girls were confused. I hope things get better soon.

Kristi -- Oh, yeah, I am thinking you need to buy a powerball or megamillions ticket today. :thumbsup2

Judy-- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: for no apparent reason ;)

Kristi-- that is too weird. I think they do know who you are and rig the contests to get you in :rotfl2:

Yet another totally off topic: I attended a talk today about a fully robotic car that will navigate it's way in real urban traffic. The speaker explained when he's talking to an out-of-towner he tells them, "In Boston, using turn signals is a sign of weakness-- why on earth would you want to reveal your intentions to the other drivers". I guess it reminded me of the saying "pain is weakness leaving the body".... "turn signals are weakness leaving the vehicle".

Judy - NOOOOOOOOOOOO! I'm sorry about your bad news!

Cecilia - WHERE WERE YOU?? We probably could have done our LR together??

Sunny - I loved the lights!! And the penguin!!!!!

Amybeth and Krista - I remember having nagging "injuries" last year. It seemed to be at the tendon insertion spots around my right knee. The taper really helped and the didn't really show up for the race. I think when you get into the really high mileage, it just hurts. (not saying you don't injuries, but i did want to reassure that those kinds of LR's hurt!) I think i've had chronic left booty pain since feb. I've had it checked out and there is nothing there (as far as the cause of the pain, not the booty. there is some of that there!)

It sounds completely normal to me but I may not be the best judge of that right now - I am right there with you.

Now we just have to give you lots of pixiedust: Pixiedust pixiedust: that this knee business doesn't affect your training.

Hang in there!

I have to say Judy my other thought was what would you have done if you didn't happen to go to the doctor? It doesn't sound like the pain really affects your training. You might not have gone to the doctor at all until after the race, right? And you still would have trained. I think you'll be OK. Just take it easy and get thee to a pool!!! Seriously, can you get to a pool anywhere? Sounds like some swogging instead of the treadmill might save some wear and tear on your knee.

Judy - OH NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I am so sorry to here this news :sad2: but major :wizard: and tons of :grouphug: being sent your way. Please be careful so you don't make it worse :grouphug:

Cam - Bummer on those Kayanos. I love everything about mine but the $$$ :teeth: Hopefully you find something comfy soon so you can get them broke in before WDW :wizard:

Although I won't be at WDW with all of you this year I'll be your online scream team WISHing all of you the very best :wizard:

We leave Thursday for Lido Key beach outside Sarasota. Can't wait for some sun as its supposed to be a high of 30 here then :sunny:

JUDY!!!!! Lotts of :wizard: :wizard: and :grouphug: :grouphug: ! That is if anything was wrong! :confused3

Cam - I know where you ran this weekend b/c I ran/biked all over the Island this summer! I hope you find some shoes that work for you!

Sunny I LOVED THOSE LIGHTS! or is it lites?

I think they are going to get a restraining order against me if I keep this up! :rotfl2:

I drive in downtown Boston every day - I need that car! Esp. since I drive into work at 3:15am! I could sleep on my commute. How cool would that be? :cloud9: I have to say, I do use my turn signals though - big pet peeve of mine. And if you are jaywalking, watch out when I am coming through! :rotfl:

:grouphug: Judy.....one tough chick ;)

So the question is.....how much pain do you run through?? I can't get in to see the sports medicine doctor until Monday. I really want to get that 18 miler in....but I'm at the point where I have chronic pain just walking right now. I'm lifting my leg in and out of the car and I'm limping. I know that once I get going I can hobble through the run...it might take me forever but I can do it. How much pain do you guys run through? I just wonder what is normal training discomfort (the aches and pains after the long runs I guess) and what is injury? I'm just at the point in training where I hate to miss any runs. Already today I was unable to do my 60 minutes :guilty: . I plan to go to yoga tomorrow and see if the stretching helps at all. So....what do you guys think???

My Chiropractor thinks it is sacroiliac joint inflammation of some sort. Which fits the bill perfectly and mimics sciatic pain and wraps around to the quad and groin muscle. But I want a final determination from the Sports Ortho next week. Ugh! :sad2: I just wanna' run!!!
