Total drive by...

Got my 2 miles in (love the mini-taper!). I was slower than usual since I was outside this time and the wind was kickin' chicken (is that right?)! :rotfl:

Now, 2 days off from working out and my race is Sunday.
I was really hoping for an awesome PR.
But, I read the course description on Tuesday night.
Now I am :scared1:
Lots of hills! HILLS! I have not done ANY hill training! :scared1:

I will just do the best I can. Hopefully I can get a PR, but it probably won't be as spectacular as I was hoping for.

OT - (just to continue to drive everyone crazy around here) I just got row 7, center tix for the Goo Goo Dolls in Rhode Island next month! :woohoo: Keep that bail fund handy! :rotfl:

The entire week has been a struggle. I thought that Sunday cement legs would pass but each day I have walked it has been the same thing. I did manage to get 4 miles in Sunday and Tues and 8 miles Today. I bought new sneakers and I don't know if it is getting adjusted to them that is making my struggle or what. After last Thursday when I did 11 miles and felt great I felt really comfortable for my 1/2 marathon on 4/29. Now I wonder if I can even finish if I struggled like I did this week. Did get in XT this week with Ab class, strength training and stretching. I hope next week is better.

I forgot who got us the discount for running warehouse, but thanks so much.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Nancy

The runningwarehouse.com code is posted in the walking/running website sticky in case anyone needs it later :) I think the Easter Bunny may do a little shopping there next week. :rolleyes1

Kathy...I made the transition from walking to running using the MFM plan. I also had shin splints after my first 5K from doing too much running. I had to get new shoes since I started off with lightweight NB. Brooks are good shoes, but maybe not the right shoe for you? Also, your walking pace is pretty fast...have you tried slowing that down as you incorporate the running? Or try shorter running intervals...start with R 30 sec/W 4 1/2 min.

SilverStephen...welcome back! Bad news on the running though! Maybe you could transition to walking like Dave did.

Stacey...what kind of capris? For running? I have a couple pair...one gray that are Champion and one black that are Nike or Adidas. They're nothing fancy...just shorter tights. Got them off ebay, NWT!

We're off to WDW tomorrow, but staying offsite :sad1: . DH has a conference so he'll stay until Thurs, the girls and I come home on Sun. I'm trying to decide if I should do my 6 miles tomorrow before we go or just scrap it altogether. Guess it will depend on when I get out of work tomorrow.

Carrie

Unfortunately someone like you who has fast miles in her past (5:40!!) has a really hard time mentally giving those up. Well at least I do.

It's easy to look at your watch at a mile split and get discouraged when your mind points out that you're not as fast as you once were. But remember those times were run when we were very young, built "differently," and had the time, energy, and resilience to train hard 6 or more days a week without injury.

Once we leave that world and enter the real world, where work, family, and the daily commitments of adult life intrude on our training, it's inevitable that we'll never those times again.

The hard part is letting it go. Some days I obsess about my pace and feel miserable, but other days I forget about it and completely enjoy being out and moving at a comfortable pace, doing something I love. Hopefully as I get older I'll have fewer of the former and more of the latter.

The best quote I've heard about this came from Pablo Morales, who swam for the US Olympic team and won medals in the 1984 and 1992 games. He retired after not making the US team for 1988 and went to law school. After a year or 2 he realized he had one more try in his body and mind, so he took and leave from school and saw his old coach about making a try for 1992. His coach looked at Pablo before a swim and asked him "where are your abs?" Moralales' reply is a classic; "in the law library at Cornell."

And remember, if you get too fast you'll scare away your racing partners. If you come out on race day and announce I'm going to hit 5:40 per mile today, everyone will step aside and give you lots of space. What would be the fun in that?

Good luck

Craig

Hey guys! Just a quick check-in. Looks like everyone is having a fairly good day. And the great part is.....it's almost the weekend!!

Just had to post a funny story about my biking today. I was out on a 20-miler, about halfway through, and I came to an intersection with two "punk" teenagers approaching on their bmx freestyle bikes. I thought it was a little weird, because it was an intersection in the middle of nowhere, with cornfields all around, but anyway.... As I approached the intersection, they turned onto the road I was on and were about 50 yards ahead of me going the same direction. I got closer to them and realized they were picking up speed. I moved towards the center of the road to go around them, and as I got up to them, I gave my coolest teenager greeting that I could muster. "W'supp?" (Ok, so I'm not a teenager anymore, but I play one on tv :) ). As I went past them, one of them said, "Hey, I can keep up with you." I casually said, "That's cool" and kept going. I was kicking along at about 21 mph since I was on pretty flat ground, so when he started pedalling next to me, I nonchalantly picked it up to about 24mph and kept on moving. Well, about 15 seconds later, I looked in my bike mirror and saw he had completely stopped pedaling and was coasting and out of breathe. I faintly heard his buddy say, "Hey, I thought you said you could keep up with him," to which he replied, "Yeah, shutup."

Teenagers. :) So needless to say, I felt fast today, if only for a few minutes.

Steve

Hey, everyone!
I got in 3.2 outside tonight in the windy wind around the fountain walk! :yay: Oh, happy day! I can't believe I've actually seen the light of day two days in a row. :cool1:
still slogging through my emergency case. Monday can't get here soon enough. I miss you guys!
Mel -- I did find time for some retail therapy and am thrilled to know I have new socks and two new running tops arriving Monday! Thank you so much, sweetie, for setting that up!
Judy -- can't wait to hear about that MRI. Sending you pixiedust:
Matt -- great pix! Nice looking family, too, now we know where you got that awesome smile! :)
TXAng -- congratulations! :thumbsup2 I'll bet that felt awesome! Seriously, how many times this week have you managed to fit that information into a conversation?!?!?!? :rotfl: Isn't it awesome to know you can do that?
Hi, Christa! How are you, hon? I've missed your smiling face. What you accomplish in a week! OMG!!!

I am feeling positive about all of this effort again. I finally hit my 70 pound mark at weight watchers and all of the sudden, I can really see a difference in my clothes. How fun to know I have to find new homes for another whole size worth of my clothes. And the best thing is -- two more of my friends are going to jump on the walking to get fit bandwagon! I keep sending more friends to this board to be inspired by all of you!

Steve -- :lmao: What a great story! Guess you showed that guy something!! But -- OMG-- I cannot believe you can ride that fast! I can't get anywhere near that on the stationary bike! I feel like I am kicking some patooty if I can do more than 12 mph!!! :confused3

Steve--WooHoo on being fast!:thumbsup2

cam--WTG on the weight loss! And yeah for getting outside even with the crazy schedule!

mel--have fun at WDW; let Mickey know we'll see him soon--one more week until our vacation!!! Not soon enough for us!

Well, today was pretty active for me. Got to the gym this am and did 30 minutes on the elliptical and then 20 minutes of arm and ab work. Then tonight headed to the running clinic w/o kids for the first time in a while. So, tonight the runners met in a different location than the walkers. We were to do a 3 mile "tempo" workout--I guess their definition of a "tempo" workout is just go out and run. So, I went out with one of the leaders and she pushed me HARD the first mile--7:43 mile!!! WTH!!! Then she dropped back (she had already ran 45 min. before we met) and then I slowed down. But the good news is that I PR'd my 5K time--finished in 25:28--think it something to do with that first mile.

But after finishing I had a little talk with the leader I started out with and she thinks that, after the mile we did together, that I should be able to run a 22-23 min 5K. :scared1: I was flattered. We then talked about maybe starting out a little slower and then speeding up. Sounds good--but then she let me know that we were going to do speed work on Monday. Ugh! I hate speed work--a necessary evil I suppose!

Got my new Brooks today--well, new shoes, but not a "new shoe" for me--felt good! Have a great night all!j

Cam - YEA for 70 pounds!!!! Congratulations!!!!

Well, it looks like I might get to start training with you all a teeny bit sooner... I had another appointment today, and they moved my c-section up to Tuesday, April 3! That's 5 days away!!!!! :dance3:

I'm off to clean the house (or at least make another to-do list for Bill...) :lmao: Nesting is now in high gear! ;)

Keep up the great work everyone!!! Tons of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for Judy and Sunny, and all those with injuries! I can't wait to join in the training fun! :goodvibes

--Lynnda :teeth:

Mel - Great job on your training and even found time to get our racing team a discount. Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
Craig - I loved your post on the passing of the torch to your daughter.
Martha - Good job with the speed training! Don't let your trainer torture, err work you too hard!
Jen - You really must warn people when you speak of grilling brats...I started to drool on the keyboard at work when I read your post.
Matt - Great pics from the DL 1/2! That Riptide device looks pretty neat. There is a nurse I know on another unit than mine that is training for a triathalon...will have to pass along this tidbit to see if it helps him out.
Christa - You are a machine! That training schedule looks pretty darn grueling!
kiena - I'm a big fan of Spongebob too, so much that I coordinate my lunches at work so I can turn on Nick in the breakroom while I'm eating. It's funny to see people come in, see what's on, look at me, then look at the tv again. My coworkers have gotten used to it. Fortunately if I miss Spongebob, then Jimmy Neutron is on after it...I LOVE Sheen.
Kristi - I'm willing to bet your gonna be great this weekend for your race, hills or not!
Steve - You showed them darn whippersnappers!:rotfl: I love how you "nonchalantly picked it up to about 24mph and kept on moving"... I would have been back with the kids buddy, "W'Zupp DAWG!"
Cam - Great job on getting in your mileage in spite of a killer work week. Phenomenal job on the 70 pounds! :thumbsup2 Good luck in court on Monday!
Judy - Hoping the MRI came back ok...and what about you waking up with your heart racing? pixiedust:
Sunny - :grouphug: :flower3: pixiedust: WISHing you a better day!
Melissa - Sounds like you had a great race!
Leana - Hope you didn't get too much snow!
Dave - Good to hear your glute pain is going away! I pulled a muscle a few months ago and my left glute was spasming. As this was done at work, some of the other nurses thought it would be funny to find one of the residents to "check it out" for me. HA HA, but the nursing supervisor was all business telling me to go to the ER and get it checked out to make sure it wasn't somehing more serious...of course he wanted me to wait until after my shift ended. It wasn't anything but (no pun intended) a pulled muscle.
Cecelia - Hows the ipod. Mine shut down today with a "Disk Mode, May Disconnect Device" screen. Would not play anything, so I ended doing my 2 miles in silence, for shame. But when I got home, hooked it up to my computer and restored the settings, it was just fine, just had to "reload" my songs is all.
Krista - Hope you find some middle ground with the shoes/inserts. Somehings gotta help the pain.
Monte - Good to hear you TM is back and running well!
Carrie - Thanks again for the shirt orders!
goofyguy - My oldest DS, 13, is in his first year of track and he loves it so far. I would like to see him go out for Cross Country, but that doesn't start until HS.

Well I did 2 miles today. Not really training for a specific race (next one is a 5K end of April) right now, just working on keeping in shape and losing weight.

Happy Training!

Mel - Thanks so much for getting us that discount code!

Matt - Great photos! Thanks for sharing.

Jen – Glad to hear that DD is feeling better. Hope she’s fully recovered in no time!:wizard:

Judy – I don’t think sloshing is good! How did the MRI go?

Christa – Just reading your schedule has me wanting to take a nap! You rock!

Texa – I haven’t run in the rain yet – my shoes are still too new and pretty! :rotfl: But once we get into serious training, I wouldn’t let a little of the soggy stuff stop me. Heavy rain is another story.

Steve – Well, you sure showed him! That’s awesome!

Cam – CONGRATS on the 70 pound mark!! That’s fantastic!! Yes, I do believe that I’ve mentioned my 4 miles to anyone who would listen. I think my coworkers are already tired of hearing about my training escapades!

Stephanie – Congrats on the new PR on that 5K!

Lynnda – OMG, how exciting!! Hope these last five days just fly by for you!

I know I've missed several folks this week. Hope everyone's doing well!

Bike day for me, was supposed to go 90 minutes worth, which ended up being 25 miles or so including some exploring of a few neighborhoods that I hadn't been through that slowed me down a bit. I still only avg about 17mph for the whole thing, and although I can consistently move along at 19-20 on flat terrain when not straight into the wind, these 24mph and so forth speeds people post seem pretty ridiculously fast to keep up for hours at a time... Luckily having never done a metric century ride or duathlon or triathlon, my goal can just be "to finish" for whatever one I do first. :)

Steve - I love your story about the punks! :thumbsup2

Matt - loved the pics from DL - thanks for sharing!

Cam - miss you - get this case over with already, ok? ;)

Lynnda
- Tuesday? I can't wait to see pics of our new WISHer!

Stacey - I have a couple pair of Nike capris. They are not tights, more like reg. pants. For some reason Nike fits me well & most of my running gear is Nike.

Stephanie—Wow, way to go on the mile and 5K times! You were flying!

Cam—glad to see you’re hanging in there and good job with the 3.2 miles IN THE WIND. And way to go with the 70 lbs!! Can you come over and teach me how to actually lose weight? I haven’t lost anything in a loooong time.

Lynnda—how exciting! Sounds like it will be crazy around your house for the next few days. Try not to give Bill too long of a to-do list. :)

Craig—I really want to read that book, especially now that you’ve so highly recommended it. Like Krista said, we may have to swing by Barnes & Noble tonight.

Mel—thanks for the work on the code for runningwarehouse. Krista has already found several things she wants to buy on there, and I think I’ll have to find some things of my own tonight.

Nancy—hope your legs feel better this week.

Kristi—good luck on your race this weekend! Here’s a strategy for the hills—just imagine Johnny at the top of the hill cheering you on. Or would Chad get mad about that strategy??? :)

Judy—how did the MRI go? Let us know what you find out, I hope it will be good news.

Christa—wow, what a crazy training week!

Wendy—Hi! Thanks for stopping in, we’ve missed you. Are you ready for the Pig? It’s getting close….

Kathy—great deal on the shoes! I’m no expert on the shin splints, but I know what a pain they can be. Check out the thread about stretches for shin splints (I think it was a separate thread earlier this week). People have a lot of good advice about how to get rid of them. Hope you find a solution. Let us know how it goes.

Mike (Optimator)—18 miles! You go!

Ok, I know I’ve missed a lot of people, so HI to all my other teammates! I really do need to get some work done today. :rolleyes1 Hope everyone has a great Friday and good luck to all the racers this weekend!

Steve

Cam- Congratulations on the 70 lbs! What an inspiration.

Mel- Thanks for the discount. I've never ordered from there before but I'm going to check them out.

Andrew- I think Sponge Bob promotes an excellent work ethic. He should be mandatory viewing! Ultra Lord rules!

Matt-Great pix

Steve-Glad you set the bar high for the youth of today!

Stacey I have a great pair of capris but I don't know who made them. They had a tag that I cut out of them. There is a nice little zippered pocket on the back just below the waistband that is perfect for keys, cash, ID. I like capris in general because I don't like to expose myself to the sun much. I burn pretty easily.

3 miles on treadmill yesterday plus upper body and core strengthening. I was talking w/ a friend the whole time so it was very pleasant.

4 miles today at the park when D/H gets home and we all go together! My 11 yo DD completed her first 2 mile run yesterday at Girls on the Run:woohoo: . I may get her to run the last 2 w/ me today.

Kristi—good luck on your race this weekend! Here’s a strategy for the hills—just imagine Johnny at the top of the hill cheering you on. Or would Chad get mad about that strategy??? :)

Judy—how did the MRI go? Let us know what you find out, I hope it will be good news.
:thumbsup2 Good idea! And Chad doesn't care. He knows all about my obsession. You let Krista name your dog Hines - so you know how that is. ;) I know! I will wear my autographed running hat that I didn't wear in WDW since it didn't match my outfit!

Judy - I was just thinking about you - how'd it go yesterday?

Good morning TEAM!!!!! Happy Friday! Last night was a pretty good run, I was supposed to do 3 miles, ended up doing 2 laps of my neighborhood which is 3.47 miles. I think Hines and I did it in 39:10. I'm still having some pain from my inserts, but not nearly as bad as it was Monday and Wednesday, hopefully I am getting used to them. Today is a rest day for me, but I'll probably do some toning and tomorrow I have 5 miles. I love taper back weeks.

So, do y'all see how competitive Stephen is? Now do you see why we can't run together. ;) I always worry about him when he goes riding, we live kind of out in the country a little bit. We live in a planned subdivision, but the area we live in is in the middle of a building boom, it's funny because we have horses and cows a quarter mile down the road and then 2 miles further is a huge shopping plaza. The roads by us are hilly, curvy, have very little shoulder, and high speed limits. The route Stephen bikes is EXTREMELY hilly, with big, steep hills that you have to really bike hard and fast to get up and over them. And when he's biking, he's gone for about an hour during the week, but sometimes on the weekend, he's gone for a couple hours. He always comes home red from wind burn and covered in bug guts. :scared: On the bright side, he has amazing leg muscles.  :rotfl:

Susan--Congrats on signing up for the half marathon! :yay: :yay: I can tell you in all honesty, I have run both a half and a full marathon and I LOVE the half marathon distance.

Kristi--Good luck on your half marathon!! Think of Johnny and you'll be good to go!

Lynnda--YAY!!!!! Good luck on Tuesday! I'll be praying for you, the baby, Bill, and Billy. Make sure Bill posts all the 411 on the baby!

Cam--CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! 70 LBS?? Wow! That is amazing! You need to be jumping around and having a party for yourself.

Stacey--I have a couple pair of capri tights that I run in when it's cold. They are both Nike. Actually, Nike is the only shorts/pants I'll run in, the fit so well. I've tried just about every brand of running shorts and Nike is by far my favorite.

Judy--Any news?

Stephanie--You are FAST!!!! You ran a 7:43 mile and a 25:28 5K??? :worship: :worship: :worship:

Kiena--Good luck on your 4 miles today! That is so cool that you guys run as a family. Stephen and I have already decided that when we have kids, we are definitely going to still be active and strongly encourage them to have an active lifestyle as well. Kudos to you and all of the parents here who are such good role models to their kids. :goodvibes

Well, I probably should start working. It's gorgeous here today, sunny with a high of 70 and I get to sit at a desk all day. :sad2: I'm hoping tomorrow will be nice too!

Hey team - Last night the whole family went to the Y. The kids and dad swam and I did about 33 minutes on the TM. Then I joined them in the pool and did 10 minutes of laps with a kickboard. The pool got really really busy, so we all left after that. I was happy with my workout.

Andrew - WARNING!!! Sorry about the brats. They were good tho!

Steve - Too funny about the punks. I seem to always run into them when I run or bike. It must be my neighborhood. I also always have someone honking at me or yelling out the car window. It really irriates me so I am glad you showed a couple up!

Matt - My brother is a long distance biker. He did 3 Century rides last year (100 mile) and one week long ride across the state (Wisconsin). I think he rides in the 20 mph range, but that is what he trains for. He doesn't run or swim or anything... just rides and cross trains at the gym. He is skinny from it.

Morning everyone! I got my 3 mile run in last night in 35:13 for an average pace of 11:44 min/mi. It was a bit slower than I maybe would have liked, but I changed the route, so mile 2 was pretty well all uphill for an elevation gain of 82 feet. That definitely slowed the pace down, but still, the run felt great. It was 60 deg out, sunny, and I managed to break out my pink camo running skirt! Unfortunately the weather won't be as nice this weekend as we have chances of rain or snow on Saturday when I am scheduled for a 5 mile run.

 For the ladies - So Mel gave me a great idea with her setting up a discount with runningwarehouse.com. You guys know I love the running skirts at skirtsports.com. I'm wondering if any of you gals would be interested it if I could set up a group discount code with them? They dropped the prices on their gym girls from $70 to $58 and they just came out with a bunch of new colours. So anyhow, if you ladies are interested in buying more skirts (since I know a bunch of you tried them out when they were having their great Valentine's sale) or trying them out, let me know. I for one want a few more skirts, but don't want to pay regular price for them, hence the motivation for trying to suss out the group discount!

Happy Friday everyone!
