Wk of Mar 25--WISH Walking/Running Club

Morning all! Yesterday I got some speedwork in--did 4X800 at 5K pace and then walked between. Was really hard on my TM. But I did it. Today I'm going to do some xtraining/strength training in the am, and then I have the running clinic tonight. Hope everyone has a great day!:goodvibes

Good morning TEAM. Warning: stonker run report! Still not used to the inserts, they are killing my shins and inner calf area. I assume they aren't causing any damage to my legs as both legs hurt in the same area and once I stop running, they stop hurting. I'm going to give them 2 more runs (3 today and 5 on Saturday) before I call The Running Spot to see if the pain is normal and how long it will last. On the bright side, I don't have any cavities.

The Whole Running Fast Thing--I guess it really shouldn't surprise me about HS track being so fast, it just blows my mind that a 4:00 mile can be slow. Until Dave mentioned about running the 800 meters, I completely forgot that my sister held the school record in the 800 meters. I can't remember her time, I'm thinking it was around 2:00. I don't know if the record is still standing or not, it was still there when I graduated in 1996.

FL Home Owners--OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!! I guess living in OH isn't so bad after all. ;)

AI Watchers--Chris Sligh gone?? Sanjaya still there???   What is this world coming to? At least Gwen Stefani rocked last night. I'm a big fan of her.

Bill--You are no fun! The end cost doesn't matter, all that matters is that you got something for free! :lmao:

Carrie--Your HS coach sounds unbelievable! Maybe my track coach didn't teach us about the proper shoes to run in (I can vividly remember running in track practice in Keds. ) or about nutrition, but by golly, he was nice. :goodvibes

Kelley--

Craig--Every time I go to Barnes and Noble, I look at that book. Maybe one of these days I'll have to buy it. Stephen and I are accruing a nice, little collection of running books.

Dave--If I run with you, will you buy me ice cream? Cookies and cream is my favorite. ;) Good luck finding the perfect balance with your daughters and running. :wizard:

Jen--Hope your princess: is still feeling better. I will post the recipes I've used this week on the recipe thread. So far, they've all been yummy!

I better get to work. Is it Friday yet??? :upsidedow

Another crazy week here!

Just wanted to pop in and say hi to everyone! :wave2:

DH and I did our longest distance yet on Tuesday night - 4 miles! It took one hour and one minute. We didn't do very much running at all, but it was great to cover that distance. Yay!

Rest day for me yesterday, so I have absolutely NOTHING to report on that end. I am totally exhausted. Last night DD woke me up once in the middle of the night and DD4 woke me up twice for bad dreams. SO I was up three times.... it's like having a newborn in the house!!!

Today is supposed to be a run day, if I find the energy. I will run after work since I only can get about 30 minutes of running in at lunch... I need to do at least 45 if possible.

DD6 is feeling better, at least fever wise. She is super crabby and very difficult to deal with. She also doesn't want to eat much and that concerns me. She isn't on any meds except Tylenol. Since it is Spring Break here, she is at daycare.

All this talk of fast running has me just shaking my head. I think I just need to come to terms with the fact that I will always be slow. But at least I am healthy and running (even slow) has improved me.

Me too! We can be slow together, ok?
I am even thinking, that if I am going to continue this craziness after the Minnie, I may slow down even more and only walk (no running intervals). My toes are a mess and I don't want to screw up my feet for the rest of my life. I will have to ask the rheumatologist about my feet when I go, since the podiatrist said I would get arthritis in my feet years down the road. :sad2:

Dave - I keep forgetting to comment on how great it is that you are running with your princess: s! LOVE IT!

Good morning team. :coffee:

This morning I did 50 min @ 4.0 @ 1%. At first the swelling bothered me (slosh, slosh!) but after 15 minutes or so, I either stopped noticing or it stopped sloshing. It hurt for a minute at 45 min, but then went away. I'm off for an MRI today, so we'll see what's going on in there.

Matt - Those are great pictures!:thumbsup2 But yes, some are a little repetitive. You look great though. Thanks for sharing them.

Hi gang! I have been away for a bit but I wanted to give you a quick update. After much consideration I have decided not to attempt the full this year. Since I just started running again in January I just don't feel I will be ready in time and I want to enjoy my first marathon. So, I just registered for the half and I am excited to be doing it. I also got confirmation that I am registered for the Peachtree Roadrace 10K in Atlanta on July 4.

Training is going well and I am trying like crazy to get my 5K down to 35 minutes. I'm getting there but it is S-L-O-W going. Now that the weather is so nice I am looking forward to some good outside runs in hilly Charlotte.

Add me to the "slow' group! I am just in awe at the pace some of you runners are able to achieve....makes me feel like a turtle sometimes. For ME, however, just walking a marathon is a major accomplishment and I'm good with that.

Matt: enjoyed the photos of DL...that one hill looks like a killer! How bad are the hills in WDW? I'm of the opinion it is fairly flat, but have heard there are a few tough spots.

Hey all!
Still alive and training....for something.:confused3
Here is what my week has been so far:
Sun - Biked 22.5 miles (think I already posted this)
Mon - Trail ran 4 somethinh miles
Tuesday - xtrained with all the dancing I do for show and rehearsal.
Wed - Ran 7 miles
Today - Due to schedule, this is a rest day (not including the rehearsal I have tonight for a show we are doing)
Friday - I think at least 8 miles of running. May try to do a brick WO with Biking, running, biking....or something like that.
Sat - :confused3

Matt - I like that swimming thing! Love the pics!:)

THis all depends what you are used too. WDW is FLAT compared to NC where I train so it is a fairly "easy" marathon....if anyone can say 26.2 miles are easy. I guess, though, any incline at mile 20 or beyond is  !

TXAng - WTG on covering that distance!

Sorry for everyone I missed...Just work is a beast! I LOVE IT! But sometimes it is a beast!:surfweb:

Do you run if it's raining?

It's supposed to rain the rest of the week but I'm really itching to get out there and run. I don't have access to a treadmill. I was thinking if it wasn't too bad or thundering I would just put on my Mickey poncho and go for it!

If it is a training day and no thunder I'm out there. I figure it could be raining come race day so I ought to know how that's going to affect me. I don't always enjoy it but I do it. Jumping puddles can be fun!

Pouring rain or thundering/lightening, I'll run on the treadmill. "Regular" rain I'll run outside in, wearing regular running clothes and a ball cap. I used to try to run in a wind breaker, but it got so hot and humid that I took it off and carried it. Like Kiena said, you have no idea what race day will give you, so you need to be prepared to run in any weather condition. Use this time now to get used to running in unfavorable conditions. Good luck!

Run in the rain? If it is not raining when I go out but starts raining while I'm running, I'm OK with it. I have gone out when it's already raining and that is really hard. Little to no motivation other than looking in the mirror.

Add me to the slow group also! When speed training with DH, my fast runs are his gentle paces! So when I'm in recovery pace, he's practically walking!!

Judy: sloshing knees doesn't sound like something you should run with. Take care and let us know what the MRI shows!!

Today was a session with my trainer. Eliptical and stairmaster then weight work. I really feel great when I finish a session with her. But tomorrow I will be sore!

Have a wonderful day everyone!!

I apologize for my infrequent drive-bys, but if I don't post now so many of you won't even KNOW me in January!

I've been absorbed in my beginner tri training. (I'm doing the Danskin Tri on May 13th at WDW.) I wish I had learned to swim as a child, because this 440 yard swim is without a doubt the hardest thing I have ever done -- and yes, I'm including my marathon-a-month stint in 2000! I am visiting two tri training groups for swimming instruction. One is an hour away; one is 2.5 hours away -- so I can't do the bike and run training with them, but I feel I have more of a handle on that and can train on my own. (Not that I wouldn't learn something, but I can't do but so much driving and still have time to train. :upsidedow )

I am training for the Pig in concert with that -- just lengthening my walks so that I am still good to do the half marathon distance in May. And folks, count me in as a turtle -- there's no way I could approach the pace many have here. But, as jeanneg says, regardless of pace we are all doing the distance and that is definitely something to be proud of.

Looking forward to the Pig and a mini-WISH reunion.

I understand that! We call my husband daddy long legs because his legs (and stride) are so darn long. Luckily my daughter inherited his long lean frame. My son and I will just go at our own pace!

Mel - :thanks: for setting up the WISH discount for running warehouse. Over the last week I've been pricing shoes online - looking for Brooks Adrenaline 6 at a good price. Runningwarehouse had them on sale because they came out with the Adrenaline 7. After the 15% off they were only $50. I ordered them yesterday afternoon and they are suppose to be delivered tomorrow.:yay: I'm so glad that they have FREE shipping and two day delivery!!

I usually go the gym in the morning but didn't get there because Mike (Optimator) had a long run scheduled today - 18 miles. :scared1: I can't imagine going that far. I'll let him post about his awesome pace.
Anyways, I stayed home with DD while he ran but I'm planning on walking 4 miles with a friend this evening. We usually do our long runs/walks together on the weekends. It'll be fun to get together tonight. The time and miles always go by so fast when we walk together. She's actually going to be coming to Minnie with me in May. We're getting away for a girls weekend.

A question for any runners in this group that used to be walkers: How did you transition from walking to running? I would love to be a runner but everytime I try my shins really hurt. Last year I started training for the half with the intent of doing walk/run intervals. I began following the MFM walk/run plan but soon developed very painful shin splints. I had to cease exercise for almost a month. Once I recovered I decided it would be best to just walk. My walking pace usually averages 13:40. I would love to begin running but as I said, everytime I try I have pain in my shins. Any advice?

Here is my 2 cents! If I am training for something and need to get the run in I will run in whatever condition...unless it is thundering...however, I have done that b/4 but it started in the smack middle of the 18 miler and I had to get back. If I am not really in training, I may or may not do it...depends on how I feel. I really like running in the rain if it isn't too cool outside. I have done 16, 18, and 22 miles in the rain. And I have run an entire marathon on a MUDDY trail in the pouring down rain!;)

I'm sorry, would someone please repost the code for running warehouse. i know it's somewhere, but we're such a chatty group I can't remember how many pages back it was!
Thanks!

Hello Everyone:

It has been some time since I checked in. Had my 1-month arthroscopic knee surgery follow-up yesterday; my surgeon says no running for 8 more weeks! Lots of osteoarthritic damage to the underside of my kneecap. Biking is OK; I can ease into cycling in the next few weeks. My surgeon supports my training for the 2008 WDW marathon, but after that he suggested it may be time to hang up the distance running shoes.

So...my "midlife-crisis-I've-turned-40-enter-the-2008-WDW-marathon" decision may truly be my last distance running hurrah.

I'll be checking in; I can't wait to start posting my training runs in late May. Oh, and one other note; I noticed a couple other Steves on the boards, so to avoid any confusion I'll switch over to the full name. Take care!
