Wk of Mar 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Sorry I've been MIA. Bad case of LTO (life takes over).

Can I ask for a quick response from all treadmill owners? I am so fed up with my schedule not allowing for outdoor running (read SNOW/ICE) and lack of kid help keeping me from the gym that I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a home treadmill. I've never wanted one because home TMs seem so flimsy. Please let me know what you have and how you like it. Thanks! I will probably buy one tonight at Omni Sports or online.

Sunny

Hi Sunny,

I have a Nordic Track 2420 that we got at Sears two years ago. I love it. It does have a lot of features that I don't use (programmable stuff) and I will never get up to 12mph, but it has a nice wide and long surface for running (or in my case walking). A cup holder and built in fan are nice too. Mine is set up in the family room, and while that will never win me any design awards I use my TM nearly every day. The convenience of it always being available is great!! Good luck in finding the right one for you.

Sunny - I have a ProForm 800 something (I have had it for 6 years). It's just OK. It is the fold up model and I think that makes it more wobbly when I run on it. It's great for walking. If you want something to run on, I have heard that any of the fold up/space savers are bad. Also, the ProForm is a little more narrow and shorter than the Y treadmills I use. So yes for walking, just OK for running. It does in a pinch.

I just had to stop by to let all of you know that I ran an entire mile this weekend! C:banana: Couldn't have done it without you!

Sunny - No advice on teh TMs (big surprise), but it's good ot hear from you! Hope life gets better soon!

Kelley - Welcome Back!

Cam - I have been told that after 20 minutes of any exercise you burn fat. I know that I lost a lot of body fat (they actually calcualte body fat at aweigh ins) when I was doing 30 minutes at Curves 3 times a week. NO way is that comparable to 20 miles/week.

solo - Glad you got back in gear!

Judy - I'm so glad that my inner caoch is lazy! Holy cow!

Sunny--We have a Nordic Track too and we love ours as well. I don't know the model #, but it sounds very similar to Pat's--dual cup holders, fans, programmable, etc. Ours also has a place where you can plug in a laptop and then download courses, but I have never used that function, sounds cool though. We've our TM for about 3 years now and we've never had a problem, and with both Stephen and I running on it, it gets used quite a bit. I'll check on the model # tonight.

Jen--Chicago sounds awesome and you guys are tempting me with that Penguin medal!! I know Stephen most likely won't do it as he is planning on running the Marine Corps marathon in October. Although a half in August *could* be considered a training run. I'm planning on semi-retiring after the Flying Pig in May--I'm still going to be running and I'll still be posting on here, but I don't want to sign up for a race because I would like for certain things to start happening this summer, if you get my drift. If I sign up for a race then I'll get excited and not want to miss the race. Maybe if things aren't moving along by August, I can sign up last minute. Hmmmmm.....

Carrie--That is EXACTLY how I felt after the marathon, I felt like on one hand I had completed my goal because I finished the marathon, but at the same time I felt like I had failed miserably because of my time. In my head, I know it was my IT band and the heat that caused the problem and I know neither one could have been helped, but in my heart it just wasn't the same. I trained 7 months for the marathon and was expecting things to go much differently than they did, that was extremely disappointing. I've had SO many people (Stephen, you, Scott, Christa, Lily, etc) tell me to NOT judge the marathon by the conditions we faced on that day, that it was terrible marathoning conditions, but it still was a very hard pill to swallow. I have to run another marathon someday if no other reason to prove to myself that I can do better than that.

Maggie--You walked 1.5 miles pushing 80lbs? WOW!!!!! That's fabulous!!!

Kelley--I am so glad you are back! Even though you are a rotten Ravens fan! ;) By the way, how do you feel about the NFL shake-up's this season?

Mel--And speaking of football, did you happen to watch Dateline last night? There was a segment on where women secretly video-taped their husbands watching football and then they would try to get them away from the television. Most of the men wouldn't budge. Stephen and I were both like, what's the problem? :confused3 Although there was a lady who thought she was going into labor and wanted to go to the hospital. Someone else took her to the hospital and the husband said to call if it was the real thing! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I thought that was a little excessive! I told Stephen we have to plan our babies very carefully, we can't have any fall or winter babies!

Good morning everyone!

Vic - I would just like to say....Tony got robbed yesterday.

I agree. Sometimes NASCAR reminds me of the WWE with regards to those phantom debris cautions.

Sunny - We bought a Pro Form 775EKG treadmill about six years ago from Sears. It's no where near top of the line and in some circles Pro Form is considered cheap. However, its stood up to my 225 lbs and the only thing I've done is periodic maintenance. You may want to check this out first. http://www.treadmilldoctor.com/

Take care. :)

Hi TEAM: OK, I need to jump on this thread before I am totally lost. I have a couple of pictures from my race on Saturday.

Here's a picture of the conditions at the start. Aaah, spring in Rochester, how does this compare to your weather Mel?
Johnnysstart.jpg

Here's me near the middle of the course. I'm behind the guy with the dog.
Davesmiddle.jpg

By the way, I eventually beat the guy running with his dog, but only because the dog made him loop back to check out/sniff something interesting.

Here's my finisher picture.
Davesfinish.jpg

So let me comment that the spectators watching the finish from the "Skyway" bridge were so, so smart - inside and heated. If you look closely, you can notice my WISH shirt sticking out from under my coat.

So I checked the results and my 43:05 min/8:37 mpm pace put me #376 out of 760 finishers. Whoo, hooo, I finished in the top half, but only because the weather kept about 200 people home (they said they had 950 preregistered for the race). I was 39 out of 65 in my age group - so I'm no where close to getting any age group awards, and not even in the top half of my age group. That's OK, I'm really happy with how the race went for me. That's the best performance I've had in a race for a long, long time. Plus, I felt like I could have run farther too.

Melissa- How did your race go? Did you get to wear your WISH shirt?

Random OT post: Any Indy car fans here? I have a pair of tickets to the race in Miami on Sat that I can't use and I would love to give them to someone who can. I won tickets to evey race this season, but I can really only make it to the races in and near the midwest, so I'll probably be offering additional free tickets in the future. Anyway, let me know if you are interested!

I just read on another thread that you have to do 20 miles at the very least to burn fat in a week. Is that right? UGH!!! Not anywhere near that right now. No wonder the blasted scale won't move. 68.8 pounds and holding. Bummer.

I've been told by coaches that your body will start burning fat after 45 minutes into a slow run. It is at that point the body will shift where it gets the engery and start on the fat.

It's not the miles, it's the time that makes the difference.

Hi everyone-

Have I mentioned that I LOVE running? Wow, when did that happen? After almost two weeks of forced rest, it feels fantastic to be able to run again. (Remind me I said this about mid November)

Stephanie - Most of my Goofy buddies are doing the Chicage Marathon as part of their Goofy training so I think you will have recovery time. I know our coaches have some sort of schedule they use to plan multiple marathons so they must be out there.

Kelley - You can do it. I think its great that you'll be there to do the half with them and then they can cheer you on in the full. I am getting smart this year and recruiting a huge cheering squad for the full.

Dave - brrrrr, I would have stayed home! But it would have taken me alot longer to finish... Way to go.

I am off to run some more!!!

Cecilia

Dave - nobody - NOBODY - looks happy at that start. :goodvibes Great pictures, though. You look FAB-U-LOUS! Yea, I'm sure it looks just like that at Mel's races too. Uh hu. :lmao:

Thanks for the TM info.

Consumers Report lists the best non-folding as:

#1 Landice L-7 Pro Sports Series $3,000
#2 Nordic Track S3000 $2,700
#3 SportsArts TS35 $3,500
#4 Precor M9.33i $3,000
#5 True PS300 $2,400
#6 Vision Fitness T9500 Deluxe, $2,000
#7 Precor M 9.31, $2,800
#8 Vision Fitness T9200 Simple CR Best Buy, $1,300

then to the folding which I won't consider.

Runner's World doesn't quite agree with CR and Treadmill Dr totally doesn't agree. That's why I'm confused:confused3 I'm familiar with Precor but TM Dr says they are overpriced because of their name.

If you see a new line in my signature that reads "you know you're a runner if your TM costs more than your car...." then you'll know I went out and bought an industrial strength Star Trac:lmao:

Sunny

Mel, do you have to tell us about how nice FL is? Seriously, can you please convince my DW to follow my dreams and move down there away from the crap that is winter? I hate the cold, snow, ice, etc...

Jim, your plan to increase walk pace sounds like a great way to cut off a lot of minutes – the water cooler thingy will help too. Good effort on the 10 miler. Did you have to rub in the distance to WDW though?

Nancy, I wish we got the snow instead of the 5+ inches of sleet that froze solid here in Chester county. It took me over 3.5 hours to clear the driveway on Saturday and my back has been talking to me ever since.

Vic, hope you start feeling better real soon!

Carrie, look at it this way, the 50 pounds of clothing will make you a stronger runner when you are running in shorts and t-shirt.

All right, I know I will miss a lot of folks but I cannot spend my entire day off on the internet. Hopefully things will not be so nuts this week and I can get on here more often. Anyway, I hit the treadmill this morning and managed to get in 8.5 miles in an hour and ten minutes. Surprised because my back is still barking at me from Saturday. Hope all have a great day and keep on training.

goofyguy - You're right! I'm actually thinking I might try to overdress anyway to get my body used to heat better.

disnutt - Welcome!!!

Dave: Great photos! You guys are so dedicated! :thumbsup2
Since moving to the South I have become a cold weather wimp.......I hope it's nothing like that in Florida in January '08! :rotfl2:

Dave - Great pics, you did awesome. I am sorry, because I can't help but laugh. I know exactly what it is like to live in that weather. I give you so much credit because I would have wimped out and not ran. OK, I take that back, maybe I would have ran since the roads look clear and it was only a 5K. But still, I would have debated not running. You look so cute with your lime green hanging out!!!!

Dave - What great pics! Congratulations to you for running that this weekend. I can't believe there is a guy in the front there wearing shorts. I feel cold just looking at him. Brrr! :scared1:

Great pics, Dave!

I think I would have been a girlie-man and stayed home. :rolleyes1

Sunny, Ihave the vision fitnes Simple #8 on your list. I like it (I picked it Bc of the rating and price!) Phil has had some probs w/ the belt slipping but it has worked fine for me and it has a good waranty.

dave- the meet was really great. I was the only gal to run it solo. all the others let their man navigate and they folllowed. I worem my shirt, but the pic is too horrible to post (and i mean horrible, i don;t know if you were here last year when ii posted the fake unibrow pic of myself, but if i'll post that, i'll post almost anything) I came in 3rd. Philwas first at 30mins, a couple came in 2nd at 39 and I came in at 43. It was supposed to be about 4.5k, but both phil and my route totaled up to around 3.5k w/ about 90meters total climb. I was really pleased w/ my result!!

i'm totally about to fall asleep!!

I finally got to see the official race results online today for my 5K yesterday, and I was excited to see where I ended up. My pace according to the official results was a 9:10. I finish 4th in my age group!!! And I was 70 out of 155 women, and 204 overall. There was approximately 350 runners overall. I thought is was great to see so many young kids out there running. There were a lot of high school and younger kids.

Now, I can't wait till my next race! Hopefully, the weather will be warmer and a little less windy!!
