Wk of June 17--WISH Walking/Running Club

Things I would expect to injure myself at:
down hill skiing
rollerblading
tumbling

Things I actually injured myself while doing:
cooking
sleeping

Sunday, I was cooking Samoasas for Father's Day (they take me 3 hrs to make so DH doesn't get them often) and I turned to grab a spice jar, and buckled my knee

Last night, I slept funny and I can't lift my arm above my head - grrrrr

I took yesterday off to rest the knee, and I tried to do a 3M run today, knee started out ok but started feeling gimpy after about a mile, so I walked the rest of the 2 miles and I felt ok, don't know when I will try to run again....

WWDave - hope the puppy is feeling better!

MSDave - glad you made it home safely, enjoy the ipod!

TiffJ - I'm so glad that your DH is responding to treatment - I will keep him in my prayers

Krista - stay cool!

Kim - the only thing I miss about work is my lunchtime runs, I always felt good when I worked out durning lunch break

Cam - take care of that hip!

Dona - if your hubby is an international jewlry thief, can you hook me up with a new pair of earrings?:thumbsup2

Leana - just reading about your boot camp made me sore

Megan - WTG on all of the PR's this week!!!:cheer2:

On the weather front it is raining here FINALLY! This is the first real rain we have gotten in about 6 weeks - my grass my actually turn green again!

My Boston buddies.....I am looking at possibly visiting in August (I have a long weekend Aug 6, and I'm hoping an old high school friend to stay with). Are there any 10K races in town that weekend? I'm not sure if the trip will work out yet or not....but I hear from Megan there are cute boys there! Megan, maybe we could meet up for a run or a beverage if I do go?

 Run/walk/drink if you make it out here I'm game for any of them. I'm not sure off the top of my head about races. I have information on some at home(I'm at work now) so I'll post either tonight or tomorrow if I have any info. Keep me posted about the plans and I'll start hunting up a string of guys for you now.

Stacey-It's kind of funny how when I'm having a bad workout or a string of them I start to feel like everyone else around me never has them. But in reality we all do and I'm sure the weather doesn't help. I'm actually considering running the stadium at the college I work at just to remind me how much better my runs are then doing stadiums. Nuts I know but I need something to kick me out of this. :)

Dana-So true. Reading the posts here has helped me kick this funk a little. I'm sure that with a few more days workouts behind me and more posts here I'll be over it.

TriMom-Your post made me laugh a little. Switch around your lists and that'd be me. I usually hurt myself doing things like walking out the front door or standing still, not exercising. Hope you feel better soon!

marathonmommy-The pain in your arch doesn't sound good. I'd definitely go to a store where they can look at your feet and tell you exactly what you need. I did this when I had trouble with my arches and they gave me the best inserts for my sneakers. After that running was like a dream. I'm even tempted to buy them again even though I don't have any pain in my arches with my new sneakers.

Today was supposed to be a xt day but instead I'm going to have a little fun and I think play some wiffle ball. I would love to start swimming before work or during my lunch break on xt days as I used to enjoy it so today I'm going to try to also hunt down a pool to swim at too. We have one where I work but I believe I have about another 2 months before I'm eligible to use it. (I'm a new employee on probation.)

I donated blood yesterday (you all should donate blood ~ just make sure it doesn't interfere with your LR plans) so this morning's effort was more of an effort yielding less stellar results.

3 Miles in approx. 40 minutes. (I walked a lot of it)

Being a pint (+) down on the RED stuff takes it out of you. I should not have even ran (no strenuous exercise within 24 hours of donation), but I am "in training" now and just had to. Why give it a rest when I've just begun?

I'll post more tomorrow and then the results from the 5K I am running Thursday evening.

Happy Training!

:grouphug:

Howard

Tiff~ thanks for sharing the great news. Best of luck to you, DH and the family in the days ahead.

Sorry only a quick minute to post.

hey there I finally get to use some terminalogy...even if I can't spell it.:lmao:

I think I had one of those stonker walks today.....did 4.4K hot as he double hockey sticks out. Shins hurt, top of my left thigh hurt.......ugghhh don't know what my time was but it was about 40 mins.

So is that a stonker thing???

Kim

Kim - Yes, that was a stonker. Sorry you got to use that word! They can't all be great, though, so forget about htis one on keep moving forward!

Howard! Shame on you! I know that runing w/in 24 hr of giving blood is probably minor compared to other things you have done :rolleyes1 , that is not good. Especially in the heat! You'd better be puttiong those fluids back itn! (OK, stepping of soap box. I wouldn't yell at you if I didn't care, though.)

Carrie - I took it easy and didn't push it. I know better. As far as running with a kidney stone, I didn't know any better. :rolleyes1

Well we had to put the poor dog to sleep. She was just suffering and getting worse by the minute. This was Mary's doggy so they stopped at the pound and picked her out a new kitty, a brown tabby. Cats are easier for having a busy travel and work schedule like we have.

We still have Erica's chocolate lab. But she is the only dog now.

On the bright side I passed that contact lens test I took last month so I can test for my state licence now.

We will probably walk later when it gets cooler outside. It's overcast but muggy right now.

TriMom, you like to live on the edge, I hadn't heard of full contact cooking and sleeping before.

Y'all have a good evening.

Dave:hippie: "YARC"

Oh Dave so sorry to hear you had to put your dog down, hugs to Erica:hug:
Congrats on passing your test.

Kim

WW Dave and Erica--Oh, I am so sorry to hear that!!!! to both of you and    for your Lab, I bet he is so sad tonight.

WWDave and Erica - Sorry to hear about your dog. It is always hard to make that decision even though the circumstances sometimes necessitate it.

Judy - Good luck with your guests.

Tiff - Glad that DH is doing better. Thanks for the update.

Howard - You just push those medical limits don't you. ;) Glad to hear you survived. Good luck on your run.

I haven't done anything yet this week because my calf is still giving me problems. It is getting better and I think I should be able to do something light on Thursday.

For those that asked, I found the bottle but not the pacificer. The bottle we have several extras of (at least it won't start smelling though) however the pacificers aren't as numerous. I will have to assume that someone took it since I don't want to tear apart the house. Billy hasn't caught on to the whole looking thing either. I guess if there aren't Easter bunnies and candy involved, he looses interest fast. :lmao:

Sorry to those I missed but I should go and help a little with the housework so Lynnda doesn't "accidently" kick me at night. :rolleyes1

Bill

Dave

I am so sorry about the loss of your friend. My best to you, Mary and Erica. Martha and I had a long history with dogs, all much beloved and greatly missed even after many years gone.

We also are at the stage of life with lots of travel and more flexibility for long work hours that two felines now either live with us or they allow us to reside in their home. I'm sure your new kitten will love the wonderful forever home.

TiffJ

Thanks for sharing such great news. Best to your entire family.

I really cannot complain about the heat, as we haven't had anything near like the rest of you, but I was out today in the late afternoon in the heat and humidity. I was able to do 7 miles, but the last 2 weren't much fun. At least I got them in. I think my shoes are well past their sell-by date as my legs have been pretty heavy lately. Hopefully fresh and cushy shoes will remedy this.

Craig

Hi everyone!
I cannot believe I've missed another day of posts! Work is really cutting into my posting time; add on top of that training and well, I'm just tired. But, that is really no excuse!

Dave: I am so sorry for your loss! You and your family are in our thoughts.

Bill: too bad you aren't bringing the kids to ToT but I understand. You'll just have to post some pictures so we can see how much they've grown!

Kim: sorry to hear about the stonker. Put it behind you. Don't dwell on it.

Howard!! What were you thinking!?! And don't you work at a Blood Bank? Don't you know any better!?! Sigh. (insert head shaking icon here)

Cam: did you know Howard did this? Next time you need to hide his shoes so he doesn't go out!

TriMom: Yikes :scared1: sounds like the things I do. DH hurts himself while having fun (I swear he will be carried off the battlefield on his shield) while I hurt myself walking across a parking lot--really, I'm not joking. I slid down a tiny incline, wrenched my knee and fell cutting a huge gouge in my knee. I ended up in the ER getting stitches. Sigh.

Dana: congrats to Michael on his run! Sounds like you're having fun with it.

Let's see. Oh yes, training. On sunday I biked and lifted weights. Yesterday I ran a mile on the TM at 10:30 per mile while ratcheting up the incline to 5% grade. Then I reduced the speed to 4 miles per hour and walked 2 miles. I had wanted to then ratchet up the speed to 10:30 per mile and bring down the elevation the same way I took it up for a mile. Unfortunately, my hips were not happy. I ran a half mile at 10:30 speed, did a quarter mile at 15:00 per mile then quarter mile at 10:30 per mile. That 5% incline is a real killer!

Today I did 40 minutes cardio circuit. It felt good. Tomorrow is a rest day. I hope I get on the boards tomorrow. Have a great evening everyone!!

WWDave - I'm so sorry to hear about the dog. Hugs to all of you. Good luck with the new kitty.

Howard - No more running after giving blood! (I say this as I notice I have a 5 mile race on July 4th, and a donation appt on the 5th. At least the race is the day BEFORE!)

Krista
- Apparently I'm too young to do a 5K without walking too, and I'm almost 45!

Cam - I have a feeling Thursday night is your night to break sub-40...

Jackie

WWDave - sorry to hear about your dog. It's always hard to lose a pet. They are members of the family. My dog is beginning to have troubles and I know the time is cming when I'll have to put her down. I'mdreading that time.

Howard - tsk, tsk, tsk. You know better. Be careful. Gotta replenish those rbc's

Kim - sorry for the stonker. You'll bounce back.

Nothing to report for me. The feet are healing, I miss training and I've lost motivation. I'm trying to convince myself to hit the pool. It's the best exercise and it won't hurt the ankles. Plus the doc said that's all I'm allowed to do. Just have to get my butt out the door. So if any of my WISH buddies want to give me swift kick, maybe I'll get my butt in gear (or was it get my ears in gear?)

Terri

Hey all... stress is doing a number on me. I have been keeping myself beyond busy when I get home at night just to keep my mind off of things. Tonight I did some cross training, I did the Crunch Pilates DVD Workout. Well, 40 minutes of it and then the kids were driving DH looney and I had to stop. I think I like it, at least for now. I feel it in my arms and abs, I hope that is a good thing.

WWDave - My condolences for your dog. But it was for the best and I glad you got a replacement!!!

HOWARD - Do you need one more person YELLING at you?? ;)

Bill - Once we found a bottle that got lost under the seat in the car. We were sure how long it was there, but it went right in the garbage. It was one of those "do you smell something?" that lasted a couple days before we discovered it. Oh and at WDW DD lost 3 pacifiers, she just kept throwing them when we weren't looking. When she lost the last one it turned into an emergency situation. Thankfully a wonderful CM at the Poly found one for us!

Krista - I am 35 and still do intervals, but I have only been running for a short time compared to most. I think I will credit my inner child for my intervals!

OK, Dh just told me to not stay up too late. So I guess that means "get your stinkin' butt off the computer!" hee hee:upsidedow

Thanks all for the positive words :) They do so help and even though I’m rare visitor to the weekly thread I take you all with me to the park. There has been many times that what pulled me to finish was thoughts of the group and the smiling faces of those that I carry with me.

Angie OUCH over the blisters! Spotted Craig’s post about Vaseline. Susan uses it on all her outings as she has blister issues. Prone to them :-/ i use it on anything over 6 miles although I used some on today’s 4 miles because i noticed 2 spots that had rubbed a bit on Saturday’s miles. Happy happy feet! Hope YOUR feet are happy happy happy again soon too :)

Adromedaslove: WOW on the pace and way to go to Michael!

Howard: Excellent pace on your 3 miles on Monday!!!!!

Krista: It is really really nice having Susan (& Cathy too she is actually out there doing the distance with us when she can). If it wasn’t for them i wouldn’t be out there.

Oh Judy!!!! What a Sunday you had!!!! Oh my goodness! Since I never keep up i missed you might have to have surgery and that it’s now a real deal. Oh you can bet you will be on the recieving end of pixie dust for a quick recovery. how kewl about the Disney guys :)

Cam : That’s a 13:31 pace?!?!?! EXCELLENT!!! To me that pace for a 5K is amazing and a dream. Great job!!!!

Megan sometimes you just have to take a day (or 2 or maybe 3 if there is a really really good new flavor at the ice cream place LOL) Susan and I are in total agreement that if we’re not having fun then we won’t be doing this long. We stop many times to watch the baby ducks/geese. Gaze at the deer who are gazing back at us :) Sometimes you just need to enjoy a seat on that bench and maybe you find yourself ready to tackle the rest of the planned run and maybe it’s just a day you think let’s go for the chocolate chip pancakes at the coney place LOL Sadly, yes we have gone for the pancakes more then a few times. Hope your next training day out is full of energy and baby ducks :-D

CARRIE!!! Kensington? Jealous. I have yet to make it out there. We’ll be out that way for Labor Day to do the 10K in Milford :)

Tiff!!!!! So glad to hear that your DH is responding well to the meds and things are finally going smoother for you. and happy to hear that you were able to get in 3 miles. What fun the disney trip sounds for the kids :)

TriMom ; hope your feeling better. Bummer when those things happen :( Course I think i can make that ‘i’m injured from cooking’ work for me. thanks for the idea ;) LOL feel better!!!!

Dave & Erica i’m so sorry to hear about Rascal. We’ve lost a dog due to heart issues too, it’s rotten. :( Take care and I hope Mary is loving the new kitty cat. But now I’m confused. I thought Ayala was the brown lab?

Oh my goodness! 5 pages since I posted on Sunday. I really need to check on a daily basis to keep up with what’s going on with everyone

Today was a 4 miler and boy was it tough. It was the 1st time I ran portions since I had the back pain at the beginning of the month. My legs felt like cement! I ended up walking back with Cathy after she caught up to me after the turn. We both were complaining about how we felt LOL We decided that doing 10 miles was easier LOL

Everyone take care, no injuries! Those that are healing, pixie dust thoughts for a quick smooth recovery. Happy Training!!!!

No your shoes should need to be broken in. How did you come about them and what kind are they? Were you fitted for them by a running store? What kind of arches do you have, High, med or flat. Are you a walker or a runner?

Dave:hippie:

Laura--I think I would take those shoes back and get different ones. A stabbing pain in your arch does not sound normal. Did you get them from a running store? And have patience breaking in orthodics, when I first started wearing mine in the spring, it was awful. I had pain shooting up my legs and cramping in my calves, I even took them out for a while and ran without them. But one day, they felt okay--no pain or cramping, now I wear them for every run and I don't even notice them anymore. Good luck!!

Hi, Everyone! Thanks for all the feedback so many of you gave on the shoes! I have flat feet and a bad Q angle. I was fit for orthotics at one point, but I can't find the darn things. There were so expensive, that I'm going to have to hold off on replacing them and hope they turn up somewhere. So, in the mean time I bought a pair of Saucony motion control running shoes. I only walked yesterday. I bought running shoes because that is what I am used to, and I've never owned a pair of "walking" shoes. I actually do only plan on walking for this marathon (or my husband may divorce me and my bad knee). Do you think I should get a pair of walking shoes instead? If so, do any of you with flat feet/low arches have any recommendations?

Oh, and have any of you walkers actually tried the brand MBT? Wow! $245 for a pair - must be magic! Or are they simply the kind of magic that only makes the money from my wallet disappear?

Laura, do not get "Walking" shoes, they are horrible. Even the shoe reps will tell you they manufactor them for strolling and for cushion shoes to wear if you do a lot of walking at work, but not for serious walking.

For walking you need a light weight shoe that has a low heel and plenty of room in the toe box.

Erica has flat feet and does best in a light weight netural cushion shoe. She has good luck with the Mizuno Wave and the Inspire. She currently is using the NB 709 light weight trail racing shoe with a cushioned insert instead of the flat insert that comes with them. She is using the 790 for all her training and racing now. Finishline here has them on sale for $59 right now.

I use the Mizuno Revolver and the Brooks ST2 racers. With a walking shoe you need a shoe that is very flexible, the motion control shoe you got is not flexible.

You could also go to a running store that caters to walkers also and get fitted for a good shoe:

To DianeL, Yes Ayla is the chocolate lab. Mary is our DD who is turning 21 in Oct.

Dave:hippie:

I've pulled myself out of bed, and am ready to start the day - well more like this :surfweb: . We have a busy day today. First it's off to the gym to check out the knee, so I don't know if it will be a run or a walk. Then we are off to Dairy Days at our local park. I've been looking forward to it for weeks. :lmao: Really, I am more excited about Dairy Days than my boys. It's where local farmers bring thier cows, they set up "cow" games, you get free milk and cheese, you get to make butter, and there is a hayride with stops along the way showing the lifecycle of cows (well they skip the part at the end where they become hamburgers). Cantcha tell I live in Tennessee????

Megan - good luck finding a pool!

Howard - Your a medical rebel - be sure drink lots of water this week.

Kim - pbbbbbb on the stonker - sorry you had to break out the term :sad1:

WWDave - I'm so sorry about your dog  . But I hope you are really enjoying your new friend :cat:

Martha - :scared1: the ER - at least I can say there are no medical bills attacted to full combat coooking! They are offering cardio circuit training at my gym, but I have a really hard time finding time to put it in. Is it just a cool workout, or do you really think it helps in training?

Terri - GET TO THE POOL! ;) besides, swimming is fun.

Jen - hope you actually went to bed - try to de-stress, I know that it's hard, but just focus on the things you can change and don't worry about the rest.

Diane - don't you hate it when short distances seem worse that your best LR??

OK - I better get moooovin'

Mary Kathryn
