Good morning TEAM! :sunny:
I think I am going to try to hit the pool this week to see if water walking helps.

Craig - thanks for this advice, I know you were talking to Dave, but this is where I may have gone wrong. After being only moderatly active, I started with only impact activities and nothing to break it up, so six months later it hurts to walk. But then I have to wonder if I had a problem before from having such a physical job, and the running just brought the problem to the surface! Once I am back into play, I will absolutely add non impact activites to my week.

As for my try at the treadmill yesterday, it didn't really go well. PT last night was miserable. They reevaluated me last night, and my right hip mobility in terrible. Oh and he said I walk funny on the treadmill! :rotfl2: What he actually said was Do you always walk like that? Ofcourse I said like what? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Anyway, apparently I walk with my hips externally rotated quite a bit more than the average person. :confused3

I am keeping at physical therapy 2x week, and will see the MD on the 5th. Until then, I am going to try the pool.

Thanks to all of you, my spirits are still up, and while I am definately out for the CDC half in Aug, I still have high hopes for WDW half.

Have a great day!
Maggie :surfweb:
Maggie - I'm dealing with the exact same thing you are. My hips are externally rotated too, and it's causing my feet to point outward putting too much stress on my shins. My PT has been working on hip exercises to try to bring the hips back in so my feet aren't rotated outward. My right leg is much worse than my left, and that's the leg where I have the severe shin splints. I've been getting into the water walking/running and I think I'm going to keep it up as cross training once I get back to the roads. I'm hoping I can do the CRIM 10 miler in Michigan in August, but I don't know at this point. :confused3 I also thought Craig's advice was right on, and once I start back again I'm going to do more non-impact cardio work to go easier on my legs.

Judy - when you have the post reply box up, look at the icons above it. There is a line of icons starting with B I U etc.. the last one in the the line is a picture of a quote box, that is the one I was referring to.

Keep in mind, I am assuming that the reply box and icon are the same on your screen and mine. Sometimes things are different.

Maggie - Honestly. As many times as I have seen this screen I have never noticed that! Geez! Thanks very much!! I am now quote enlightened! :goodvibes

I GOT MY SOCKS, I GOT MY SOCKS!! Are they awesome or what? I think they are even cooler than the pic!! But I love fun socks, so I may just be more excited than the rest. I can't wait to wear them on Saturday for my 5K race. Now I can't wait for my shirts!!!

I ran last night, not sure on the distance, but it was about 25 minutes with 10 minutes walking. I am guessing somewhere between 2.5-3 miles. I just mosied around the neighborhood, up this street, down that street. I noticed that when I run in the evening my knees and ankles ache more. Or maybe it is the pavement? When I ran on Saturday at the campground, it was dirt and gravel and I felt like I could run forever, until it rained.

Oh and last night was the first night in forever that my 3 year old didn't scream when I left for a run. She always tells me she doesn't want me to run, but this time she was OK with it. She even waved to me from the driveway.

Judy - I started WW again about 3 weeks ago. I have lost 6 pounds since then and feeling great. I still have way too much more to lose, but if I lose 40 by the 1/2 marathon I will be feeling pretty awesome!!! Congrats on your loss!!!

Sara - How old are you youngest? My dd15 (16 at the time of the marathon), was dissapointed, but I told her that we could have a girls only trip for a short weekend in May for the Minnie!. It would be our first trip without her brothers since they joined our family and our first trip just she and I. She was VERY excited at the thought. She already has told me she would like to spend one day just strolling around the World showcase without having to worry about her brothers melting down. She enjoys good/interesting food and shopping! Gotta Love her! :thumbsup2
My youngest are DD5 and DD9. Their 16 yo brother could care less that he's out for the marathon :confused3 . My girls love cheering for us and making signs. My DS just doesn't but into the Disney/running thing...

Today is yet another off day for me. With only running 3 days a week mentally it does not seam like enough. Physically my cardio is staying up and I am really looking forward to starting training in August.

I think I have decided on staying at the French Quater. My kids will like the pool and the proximity is great to the Start. Since it is so close to the start will I still have to show up at the start line 2hrs before the start? :confused3 Most races I have been in I line up in the corel aprox 15-30 Mins before the start.

I feel extreamly lucky I am fairly injury free (at the current time). I have a great sports physo and a awesome chiro who also does ART. If I can't get into one I always can get to see the other.

Cheers

Robb - I did that 3/week plan last year. I actually really liked it. I used the one that was in RW and I modified it a little moving in the mid week tempo to the day b/4 the LR and 3 times ensuring that it was 1/2 the distance of the LR. I used it for Goofy, which was my 1st marathon. I'm an adventure racer normally, so the 3/week gave me plenty of time for crosstraining and gave me time to do 3 big adv. races and a century ride (not race!) during the plan. It was awesome!

Lynn - were are you??????? I miss you and i don't know whether to sign up for that 1/2 ironman in AUGUST in ARKANSAS!!!!!!! Help!!!!!!! (Plus, I really want you to look at the pics of the P.U.S.S.!!! I'm extremely proud of my new bike building skills - I had to take it to the LBS to have them check everything out and basically ensure it was ride worthy :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: ) I think i might be getting hard core w/ the SS.

Heather! I missed your post last time! Please let me know the details. I think Kevin said he'd be gone 2 weeks, so he shoul dbe back. Was wondering when that trip was coming up. :cool1:

Robb and Judy

You absolutely do not need to be in the starting corrals 2 hours in advance. Actually the Disney race people "hold" the runners in the staging area in the EPCOT parking lot, and then let the Cecil B. DeMille-esque procession to the corrals begin at some time before the start. If you come out of POFQ or POR at 4 a.m. and walk to the corrals you'll be mighty lonely for about 90 minutes.

The best part is last year when I stepped out of the POFQ lobby at 5:35 for the race there was a Disney bus sitting in the circle and the driver kindly asked me if I would like a ride to the start. My mind starts spinning and sees 2 alternatives:

1. I walk over to the starting corrals, and I mean directly to the starting corrals. I arrive in 10 minutes at most, and am in the corral by 5:45 ready to go and fresh.

OR

2. The nice driver takes me out on the access road, turns left, turns right at the second traffic light, drives me behind EPCOT, past the Boarwalk and Swan, turns right onto world drive, turns right toward EPCOT, turns into the parking lot, parks, I get out, walk to the staging area, and then walk at least 1 mile to the starting corrals. I anticipate this will take 30 minutes under ideal conditions, and before 6 a.m. on marathon Sunday it isn't ideal.

My darker side formulates a witty answer for the driver, but thankfully what comes out of my mouth is, "no thank you, I'll walk."

Take care

Craig

Hi Craig: Was it you that was doing the deep water running last year? I thought it was you that recommended I try it. Did you lose much fitness when you were doing it? I've had to do the deep water running for nearly a month now, and I'm really curious what kind of shape I'll be in when I get back to the roads. I did manage to do a 60 min long deep water run on Saturday.

Dave, I actually had to pool run last summer for about a month due to a knee injury that kept me from running. Like Craig pointed out, it is absolutely the most boring cardio training in the entire world (but you've probably figured that out by now). That being said, I came back from my injury stronger and more fit than before I was injured. I combined the pool running with biking and swimming (laps), as well as weight lifting and core exercises--I always end up overdoing it on the cross training when I'm injured because I'm worried I will lose fitness.

Without a doubt, the pool running was the most beneficial part of the cross training. It is such a tough workout that returning to real running after being in the pool almost seems too easy. Now obviously, you can vary the intensity of pool running and I'm sure if you moved slow enough in the water, you would lose many of the benefits of the workout. But if you move at a decent pace (keep your breathing and effort similar to what it would be during a run, whether it be a tempo run, LR, etc) and keep good form, I don't think you'll need to worry about losing fitness.

Quick funny story about my pool running. I refused to use the pool at our local community center for my workout sessions, since I pretty much looked like a big dork with my aqua belt on, so I would use the pool in our neighborhood early in the morning or late at night. I used to go over around 5:00am so that it was still dark and I wouldn't run the risk of anyone coming to use the pool at that hour. One morning I was in the middle of a 30 minute hard "run" and I had forgotten my aqua belt, so I was using the pool life preserver to stay afloat. All of the sudden I was startled by a dog barking very close to the pool area. Some guys had been walking his dog down the street and the dog must have either seen or heard me in the pool, because he dragged his owner across the lawn to the edge of the pool fence and stood there barking at me 15 feet away. So there I am in the middle of the pool at 5am (still dark outside) thrashing about like a crazy person with a life preserver wrapped around my shoulders . I stopped as soon as I saw him and sheepishly said "uh, hi." The guy just looked at me quizzingly, gave a questioning "hi" in return and pulled his dog back up to the street. Guarantee he thought I was either drunk or mentally insane.

Hey I lost five pounds so far since Sat morning! :woohoo: Ohhh I can't wait to weigh in at my next meeting!
Christa - 20 miles in one run????? :faint: OK well, in five or so years when I get to that distance I'll worry about it. :lmao:
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Judy - I thought you were running the full marathon... I can't keep up. :confused3 I do have to say the 20 milers are most of the time easier than the shorter runs. I think of it as an adventure. Sometimes when I do a 3 or 5 mile run, I am looking at my watch and wondering when I will be done. With a LR, I know it will take me hours, not minutes, so I don't look at my watch as often.
I am so proud of your WW progress! I lost over 25lbs on WW and am able to eat! DD8, DD5, and I are (as I type) eating a whole bag of grapes. I don't know if you know this about me, but I am in the BIG EATERS CLUB! Really, I am willing to bet I could out eat anyone on this thread! I can ALMOST eat a whole Kitchen Sink ALONE! :rotfl: I can outeat my DH who is 6'3''...a full foot taller than me.....I pretend I am 5'4'', but I am really just over 5'3''.
OK I must go shower, I ran 3 miles after work and I STINK NOW!

OK! I am posting a few pics from HH....My computer is slow so this is all I have the time for right now.

WARNING: TOTAL DRIVE-BY POST!!

Hi all! It has been a wonderful week here in Toronto. Even though I am DC-bred and live in Michigan, I always feel like TO is my "home," so to speak.

Sadly I will be heading home tomorrow and clearly I have many, many, many posts to catch up on.

Looks like we have a few newbies, which is always wonderful! WELCOME to you all.

Heather-- Wow, you won't be far from me at all!! Very cool.

Take care all!
Kevin

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for being MIA for the past couple of days. June (especially the end) is always a very hard month for me to deal with. My dad passed away a couple of years ago, a week after Father’s Day weekend – and well, I just tend to get a little depressed. I went through everything with my Dad (he was a drinker)…..well, I would go on but if anyone has dealt with that experience before and if you haven’t well….I really don’t want to unload everything on to you.

I wanted to try and catch up on everything so, If I miss anything I’m sorry.

Thank you all for the great compliments on the baskets – I poured myself into them a little bit to get my mind off of things.

Jodi-- your baskets are beautiful! No wonder people think they are pro. You could earn a second income!!!!!
Thanks Sunny! That’s a great compliment, I really wish I could do baskets for a second income…..it would really help out.

Hi Jodi Your baskets look great. Keep on chugging away on the treadmill. Do you run exclusively on the treadmill? I thought you had an outside route too.
Hi Dave, for right now I am doing things on the threadmill…..just being a little bit of a wimp with the heat and all – I was going to try and venture out this past weekend but it pretty much rained all weekend.

I just got back from a very satisfying 3.75 mile run. Stretched really good afterward, and decided to ice the shins just to be safe (forgot to do that until I read Dave’s post – thanks, Dave!) The first 3 miles were 11:41, 11:34, and 12:17, the last ¾ mile took 13:45! Needless to say, I died at the end of 3 miles. But it was still the best time I’ve ever run, even in either of my whole 2 5Ks, so I’m feeling improvement. DH is scouring the web trying to find another race for me to run, but I’m not feeling a real need to race right now.
Congratulations Jackie….good job! I totally understand about not really feeling the need to get back out there but that will change, it’s always great to get a way and out for a good run.

Well, this morning I got out of the house early and put in 6 miles, which is the farthest I have run in years. Turned out really good. I finished in 1hr 0min
Excellent Dana! BTW – I really like the sports beans too! For some reason I can’t do the gels like most people can.

Amy the Summer Solstice run sounds like a lot of fun – Congratulations!

Jodi- great basket ! You could go into business for sure
Oh, Thank you so much!

Hi Sonya – welcome to the team

may get to do the WDW marathon! My BIL wants to do it with DH and me.
Oh Christa – you have to.

Hi Robb

I need to get back to the Community Center and start cross training and lifting weights again.
I need to get back to the gym also and do cross training day with weights too!

Sat, I walked 3 miles and then ran 1.5 with no sign of pain. Sun morning I woke up feeling better than I have in weeks so I went to the Y with DD and did the elliptical.
Yeah – Sunny’s back to exercising

Honeibee, you may want to be careful with WW and running. When you get up into the longer distances you requirements for cal's, carbs and potasium may lead you into some trouble.
Very true – I think I have to switch things a bit, I’m starting to loose too much weight now that I had achieved Lifetime….I just need to get used to eating to support the running instead of counting points to loose weight.

Hi Keycee

Oh BTW – I started a Pre-trip report for January, feel free to read it

Okay, last night I ran 3 miles on the threadmill 10.45 min/mile overall. I also worked out on the elliptical for 20 minutes and I think I found my next run……It’s in August – It’s called the Ice Cream ……It’s only a 5k but I will be happy to do it. Ideally I wanted to look for another 10k but I only could find 5k’s in my area.

Wow, it’s still blowing my mind with how soon the January trip is coming up. Although, still no AAA rates out yet. But before that also fast approaching is the half marathon in October

Jodi -Just had a travel agent tell me that WDW will not put rates out until August fro Jan (although I'm sure I fgot my AAA rates in July last year.) Anyway, that may be the hold up. (((hugs))) So sorry about your fatehr. I am so drading the day when I have to deal with losing a parent.

Solo! Thanks for posting! Been beautiful here,so let's hope for the best! Do you do Grand Haven firewokrs on the 4th?

Christa!!!! DH was just at the computer asking who the pics were. I said, "Christa, she passed us in MGM." "She's the one who'd MIL thinks she would be skinny with all that running." After looking at all of teh pics dh said something about your MIL's competancy level and "She's a stick!" Thought you might like to hear that! :goodvibes BTW, He meant she's a stick in a good way. ;)

Jodi-- I'm sorry June is a hard month for you. :wizard: :wizard: and :grouphug: :grouphug: for you.

Robb-- I love the term LSD. I think I first picked it up from Helen (along with many other interesting words). Here's one of my T-shirt designs:

:rotfl:

LSD_drugMagneLittle.jpg

Actually, post race analysis showed me that I ran my LSDs too fast last year. I don't think that will be a problem this year!

Craig-- I chickened out last year, but I just booked my ressies for POFQ this year and I'm walking. No near race-miss port-a-potty stops for me this year!

Judy-- WEIGH TO GO on the weight loss :cheer2: Awsome. You will probably need to tweak your point levels as WW is not set-up for endurance athletes. I can remember a leader marvelling over someone she had in a previous class who earned 8 activity points... in ONE day! Ha, Ha that's everyday life for us :lmao:

Christa--I've said it before and I will say it again... there is NO WAY you could out eat me. I don't think there's anyone who could out eat me. Its not something I'm proud of... I still haven't tried Core. I've been "meaning" to for over a year. You are such an inspiration, I must follow your lead... soon! You look so fabulous and your HH pics are great.

MelR-- I love your pink bike. I'm amazed that you know how to put all those pieces together! I'm still waiting for my day to become a rider. Speaking of which, the Y is raffling off a bike at the end of teh summer. You have to get your ticket punched 15 times (once per visit) before submitting it. You can submit multpiple tickets. I will probably be lucky to get two in. I wish DD would do them, too. I want that bike!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and the news of the day... two NS guys checked me out and said I am doing great. They said since my back has started to improve on its own surguery is out of the question. They gave me a medusol pak (spelling?, its downstairs and I'm not bothering to go get it). Its a 5 day oral steroid pack. I really hope it finishes the job. But I am free to workout, run and even lift weights but staying with light weights for a while. I am perfectly happy with that.

I did a baseline 5k on the TM at the Y last night. It wasn't pretty. It was 34:50. But now I know where I stand. I had also done 60 minutes intense arc trainer before doing it. The silly machine said I burned 900 calories in one hour and I set my weight 40 lbs light. There's no way I believe that!

So feeling much better today, I went out and purchased the bare minimum camping gear and put ressies in for my favorite campground in the White Mountains (Lafayette) for next week. It'll just be me and DS6. Am I insane or what? I just can't let this summer go by without some real fun and the vacation days were already planned before the stupid pn and sciatica.

Pool running: I take DS to the town wading pool. It is 2 feet deep and about 10 yards in diameter. I can't stand just sitting around while he swims to I run around in circles. I feel completely foolish. Sometimes I make him be a caboose so I can at least feign playing instead of training. Its not very deep but it is quite challenging.

Sunny

Sunny - I'm glad you got the workout green light. You do need that bike!!! I hope you get it!!!!! I just learned how to put all of those bike pieces together! It was my first one. It would be a really cool hobby if it wasn't so expensive! I got all take off stuff (basically new but taken off another bike and replaced by an upgrade) so it was cheap and I took some yummie treats to the people at the bike shop, which helped!

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

Not much new to report for me. Did another 30 min of deep water running yesterday. DD8 princess: came with me and sat by the pool reading Harry Potter while I swogged (how do you like that? - instead of wogging I was swim/jogging, swogging). Saw my orthopod, and he didn't have anything new to say. He agreed with my plan of not running on the roads until after July 4th, and then we'll see how my shins are.

MelR and Christa - thanks so much for posting pictures. Your families are both beautiful, and it's so fun to see the pictures.

Sara - your girls are about the same age as my girls. Maybe they can all make signs together for the marathon.

Welcome Robb!!! - in case I didn't say it. Good to have you here, and great to get more advice. I was actually up in Mississauga to give a talk this spring at UT-M. If I make it back up there, maybe I can stop by your store.

Steve- Thanks for your comments on the water running. I was thinking of your story while I was in the pool yesterday. I know just what you mean about not wanting others to see my swogging, but I've gotten over that. I did forget my life jacket the other day and had to use a noodle under my arms, and I felt even sillier.

Jodi- Sorry you had a rough week over Father's Day. So sorry for the loss of your father a couple years back. Here's some PD :wizard: :wizard: for your getting through the rough patch. I hope your depression lifts. Hey, do you get ice cream after that Ice Cream 5K? :thumbsup2

Jodi -Just had a travel agent tell me that WDW will not put rates out until August fro Jan (although I'm sure I fgot my AAA rates in July last year.)
Carrie- I thought some of you already had room reservations made. :confused3 Do you change your reservation once the AAA rates come out? Can you only make reservations for AAA rates through AAA? Does that rule out using Anthony Travel to get a marathon package?

Here's a question for the Disney planning experts. I'm considering staying off site for the WDW marathon weekend. We have a voucher for 4 nights in a 2 bedroom condo at the Sheraton Vistana Villages, but I was thinking of getting a room for 1 night in the Wilderness Lodge to sleep on site the night before the marathon. So can I only make dinner ressies for the 1 day/night that I am on site?

Sunny- Great news from your NS guys!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Glad your back is healing, glad you don't need surgery, and so glad you can workout. Maybe we can have a eating throwdown between you and Christa at WDW after the races. I'm really glad you're starting to feel better. Small steps.

Dave- I was thinking about staying offsite too. We have rented a condo in Windsor Palms 3br 2ba 1300 sq ft & love it there, easy access to back entrance by AK. Anyway if I come it would be me, DH, DS9, Ds5 & my parents. It is 1/3 of the cost to stay offsite so we could come earlier & stay longer. Then I could get a room at POFQ for race weekend. You can make a room reservation now & when AAA rates come out you can apply the AAA rate. If getting AAA room rate only you can do this directly thru WDW (that's what I did last year) You also have up to 5 days prior to trip to cancel, so you can go ahead & get room for marathon weekend & hunt for better rates later. As for dining, you can make reservations for any of the restaurants even if you are staying offsite the whole time. You cant get the dining plan but you can make ADR just like anyone else, so go ahead & book away no matter where you stay. Also, if you book a room & Anthony Travel comes out with better rates then you can cancel you ressie, get your deposit back & book with Anthony. Race weekend fills up so there is no way we can wait until Aug to book rooms.

Sunny-so glad you are improving! :Pinkbounc I love the Tshirt design.

Christa-great pics!

Kevin-good to hear from you again, glad you had a great trip.

Jodi- :wizard: for getting thru this rough patch and definately up those point you are eating! We dont want you to dissapear on us.

Jen- I love those socks too! WTG on the wl! :cheer2:

Judy- yea for you too :cheer2:

Steve- that story is hilarious :lmao:

Krista-VBS is going great, exhausting but great. I love the Fiesta theme. Bright, colorful & fun. We have the whole church decked out. I am doing elemtary ( 1st - 4th) and we have about 350 kids this year. About 800 for all the groups. The kids seem to be having a great time!

Colleen-good luck on your race on the 9th!
