Wk of Jun 18--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I think I'm back on the workout wagon! Yesterday I did 3.1 miles on the TM in 29m51s at 2%. Today will probably be another 3-4 miles, plus lots of XT (in the form of packing and lifting heavy moving boxes). DBF and I haven't hired any moving help, so I'm going to be totally ripped by the end of the move :rotfl:

Cam - thanks for the encouragement! I've actually done a few runs since the Minnie, but I wanted to do a longer one last Sunday as a wake up call to myself that I've been losing fitness over the last month. It worked!

Krista - I wish I could run with my dog, but he has joint problems. I wonder if he would ride in a baby jogger... :dogdance:

Krista - Your local outdoor store should have collapable (cloth) doggie water bowls. You can put it in your waist pack for hines. I got one for Ec's Buddy as he was running all of our long runs w/ us and I was sick of stopping at puddles!

On vacation. I'll be back to post more later. Planning on riding the bucking bronco tomorrow. Hope she is good to me!

Good morning all. :sunny:

No training today, as it is a rest day.

Cam - Holy cow! I do at LEAST 2 and a half hours of chores per weekday. Man! That's like another whole meal! :teeth: Well, this is all good in theory but I'm not losing ANY weight doing WW on my own. I'm actually going to my first meeting Saturday morning. I NEED this.

Carrie - Well, I was actually thinking if we couldn't get on the boards and wanted to get in touch with someone. Being that the server is making us all nutso lately. If anyone wants my email it's easy...Honeibee@yahoo.com. I check it every day. :surfweb:

Minnie - How are you doing today? :flower3:

Monte - Hey, at least you DID the 10k! I think that's great! :woohoo:

Helen - OK that does it. I can never move to N.Z. No one is ever going to see me in a bikini! :rotfl: Seriously though, it sounds lovely.

Dave - Oh Dave, don't be scared. Listen, if I can do this, anyone can. I'm 45, 40 pounds over weight and not that long ago had ACL replacement surgery. Plus I've never been athletic in my life. Mind you, I'm not running the entire Half, but I just keep plugging away, doing intervals, adding a little more. When things start to hurt I back off a bit. But I keep going. Keep improving. Even if it's just the tiniest most minuscule bit of microscopic improvement. Please don't be scared. Give your shins what they need but keep plugging away. I bet you'll amaze even yourself.

Jodi - I have a ticker in my signature so I can keep tabs on how much time I have left. :teeth:

Krista - Thanks for sharing the Hines adventure! Sorry to laugh at your expense but it was kinda funny! :lmao:

Heather - You do realize I'm only about 40 min north of Manhattan... :rolleyes1

Hey do we have any plans for Saturday night dinner? I mean after the Half? I know you Full guys have to get to bed early, but DH and I were thinking about ADRs and wondering where we should have dinner Saturday night.

Rhonda - I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. You are in my prayers.

Sunny - I'm thinking about you! I hope you are able to get some relief soon! You are an athlete!

Minnie  I totally relate to what you are feeling. Right now I can't run at all. I'm signed up for Goofy and I still don't have a clue when I'll be able to get out there and try out one measily mile. :furious: Its frustrating, depressing, terrifying. Just a couple of days ago I started carrying a couple of pictures with me; one WDW marathon pict and one "arms" pict to prove to myself I really was an athlete. All I feel like right now is useless. Not only have I lost the abiilty to workout, I feel like I am losing the desire. Its terrifying. I'm sitting by the phone waiting for a call for my neurosugeon apt. I have to drive back into Cambridge today to pick up my MRI (all I have right now is the written results). That's driving without the ability to look both ways. Should be a life-risking activity :confused3

Dave-- You have made incredible progress since you started walking back in Jan(?). Maybe you've progressed just a little too fast. Don't get discouraged. I know you can do it. Just keep researching all the areas that might lead to shin recovery. Good luck. I know how frustrating it is to want to run and feel your body might not be able to do it. Don't give into that negativity :)

Dave & Cam-- I've had many server busy issues lately, too. If I was more organizied I'd do the Judy thing ::yes::

Colleen-- If, I mean WHEN I run Goofy, I plan to do the half at about a 12-13 mm.

Jodi-- the other cake was done by Lynda (Crazy4Pooh). It was awsome. I've never attempted the shape cakes.

Monte-- congrats on the 10K :cool1:

Jen-- In my case, my mother has a history of clotting which they said put me at risk for deep vein thrombosis (sp?) which is life threatening so mine was considered necessary (TG) I never could have paid for it myself. I have been throb, creepy-crawly sensation free for one year. Now, the combination of standing for 2 weeks straight and the constipation I ended up with from the percocet (sorry, TMI  ) I have one starting again. It doesn't show on the outside but I can feel the surging and creepy-crawly. I am so bumbed. This pneumonia has had far reaching ill -effects :furious:

But depending on what vein it is, you may be able to have the closure procedure done. I had that done first on my left leg. I believe it can only be done on the greater safenous vein (sp?). It was a really easy, nearly painless recovery. Stripping was another story...

I've eased into the WDW Half idea with Paul. I've used my latest pneumonia, tendonitis, sciatica for sympathy and said, "if I ever get to run again, do you think you would run the half at Disney with me? It would be just the two of us, we'd go just for the weekend and not tell DS". Of course this totally breaks my heart to go without DS but financially we really can't afford to go at all. He said, "sure" but he shows no signs of contemplating training! He could pull off a 5K without training, maybe even a 10K, but 13.1 miles is a different story.

I went to the Y last night with DD. I got her set up on Fitlynxx. She was so proud at the end to see she lifted 4,500 lbs. I bit my lip and refrained from saying "I lift 80,000 lbs in a session). What are mom's for? But she was cute, too. She very carefully, worded her concern of not wanting to get really big muscles, would she end up looking like me? :rotfl: :lmao: I assured her at the rate she willing to lift that will never happen! Not to mention she is a stick up and down to begin with. I also walked on a TM while she wogged. Oh that was hard. Everytime she went into a run it was all I could do to not join her. The odd thing is, I know I could run without pain but I know the pain would come back to bite me later. What I don't know is, would that actually cause more damage? Hopefullly I'll know soon.

Thank you MelR!!!! I saw my (yet another) new PCP this morning and very sheepishy referred to myself as an endurance athlete, I quickly added "but I've gained alot of weight and lost alot of muscle over this past 6 weeks, but I really was an athlete" I have no confidence left. I can't wait to prove to myself I still have it. :sad2:

A while back someone had a link to a website that carried athletic apparel for...less than athletically built ladies. Anyone still have that? :confused3 (OK yes, I mean plus-sized.)

Plus, Cam, I think way back in Dec you posted a list of what you were packing to take to WDW. I remember this because Howard was on your list. :rotfl2: When you have time, could you post that for us again? I meant to keep it last time but I didn't. Yes, I am already thinking about what to bring. I know, get a life. But I'm trying hard to keep this trip to Italy off my mind. :rolleyes1

Judy -- I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, and it may be TMI, but let me know and I can always delete it! Our philosophy, as may be apparent from the list, is that anything vital went in carry-ons (all running gear, etc.). Everything else was in checked luggage. It gaves us peace of mind to know we couldn't lose the running gear we'd trained in.

Oh Cam that is exactly what I was looking for! :thumbsup2 Thank you so much!

And thanks for the good advice to bring the essentials in my carry on! (See, I wouldn't have thought of that and I'd be the only runner naked and barefoot when my luggage went to Oregon! )

Thanks very much!!

You're welcome, Judy. My good friend Ann (Maherae) reminded me that aleve is not on my pack-list, though taking it is on my to-do list. I always have it in my pocketbook, but if you need any Rx or OTC drugs, I'd definitely put them in your carry-on, as well.

Jodi--When is your anniversary? Our anniversary is Oct. 21. This year is the big 6 for us. Have fun planning! Although I don't know how you do it. Stephen and I sit down and plan everything, but I make him call and make all the reservations and ADR's. For some reason I just don't like doing it. How is your foot? Feeling better?
Our anniversary is October 29th. Although, it is only a year for us, we had been together a total of 10 years.

I'm having a lot of fun putting together his basket for our anniversary -- kind of funny I made a basket for my step-father, for Father's Day (didn't give it to him until Monday) -- I bought it into work with me on Monday (it had stuff that wouild melt in it).....Well, a few people spotted it in my cubicle and thought that it was professionally done. -- I'll post a pic. :)

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share -- this is the basket that I put together for my step-father (for Father's Day). It was a big hit.

I still think it's funny (but a great compliment) that people thought it was a professionally done basket.

Jodi-- the other cake was done by Lynda (Crazy4Pooh). It was awsome. I've never attempted the shape cakes.

Both of you had done such a great job with the cakes, I wish I were as talented. :goodvibes

We are on vacation t Mt. Magazine St. Park. They recently built a new lodge and it is beautiful. It has a great workout room and an indoor pool w/ a lap lane (and it really is big enough to do laps in) Today, I got to swim for 20mins, lift upper body and run about 5 mile mix of trail and road on the highest point in ark! I had a pretty good workout day! Tomorrow, Phil is having a guys climbing day (just below the lodge) so i'll be riding and hiking w/ the boy! I'm sure that will be a slight challenge :-)

Sunny, you are still an endurance athlete! Once you get back into the grove you will be fine! I'll send you the program I did for goofy last year. (i think I maxed out at 34 miles on my longest week and it was only a 16 week program. also, i missed some of the shorter long runs for crosstraining/races.) Basically what I'm saying is, you can totally do goofy and probably w/ fewer overall miles than you think or even than you did last yr. for the full.

Mike – Sorry about your health problems. Sounds like you’ve done everything right, and it’s still going to catch up with you. Doesn’t seem fair!

Michael – Congratulations on the weight loss. Great workouts!

Kevin – Hope you have a great vacation!

Sunny – Hope your health problems improve. You’re having such a tough time of it, and it doesn’t seem fair. And you’re STILL a runner!

Dave – LOVE the socks! Thanks again for all your hard work getting those together. And hang in there with the shins. You’re still a runner too, and I’m sure you’ll be there in January!

Minnie – Baby steps…

Jodi – I’m hiring you to plan our next anniversary. We never do anything exciting – I definitely need you to help spice things up!

Krista – Hines definitely keeps the walks interesting! We only take Mystic with us when we’re not really serious about the training – it drives me crazy stopping for potty breaks every 50 feet.

Cam – You have a whole new career as official WISH Board List-Maker! And where has Ann (Maherae) been?

I haven’t done any official training this week – have been in Baltimore for work since Sunday evening. But we spent a couple of hours Sunday night in DC walking the mall, and then spent another couple of hours last night at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore walking, and I’m pretty sure we did at least 2-3 miles both nights, so I’m counting that! I wish I’d thought to take the Garmin when we walked so I’d know for sure just how far we walked.

I’m so excited – a cousin is getting married next month in California, and DD and I are flying out for the wedding and doing 2 days at Disneyland! I’ve only been once before (in my college years) for a few hours, so we’re really psyched about visiting the “other” park!

Hope everyone is healing!

Jackie

Where is this park Mel? Sounds lovely.

I am so very sad to report that my dad passed away last night. He was in hospice for just over 24 hours but they were the most peaceful hours we all experienced during the last horrific 8 days. It was the hardest day of my life. We are planning a memorial service on Friday at the community church near my parents' home and hopefully that will provide us all some much-needed closure.

I can't thank you ALL enough for the support, prayers, and pd you have so generously given me and my family. It has been a true source of comfort to me and I wish I could give each of you a hug and a personal thank you. Please know that as hard as this whole experience was, it was improved by your support.
