Wk of July 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Mel-- I definitely think you need a rest. You won't lose your fitness or your motivation; you'll gain much needed rest and your feet/ankles will get stronger. Good luck!

Kristi-- that's awful about the tri.

Martha-- wow! I didn't know a heavy half was really a half 50K:scared1: Great job!

Dena-- Congrats on baby!

Judy--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your surgery

SW Dave-- I couldn't resist personalizing WWDave's link; it's just too cute:

I did 3.5 miles on the TM last night. I did a 9 mile on the TM last Tuesday and that's it for running for the week:sad2: I won't be able to run during the "test drive" so I hope to get a couple runs in between now and Thursday.

Sunny

Jackie – I am sorry you had a stonker Saturday, but you only have to look at your signature picture to be reminded that you are a runner! We all have our good runs and bad runs and every single one of them contributes to the overall experience and the fitness that we bring with us on race day. During the marathon, I kept reminding myself that I’d had bad runs before and gotten through them, that all the miles I’d covered before had brought me to race day, regardless of whether they were easy miles or hard ones. I hope you are doing better today!

Leana – I have to go find your race update, but isn’t it fun to get new running gear? I bought 2 new tops & a running skirt yesterday at the Izod outlet – very cute and fun! Okay, just saw your post. Those results are fabulous!!!! I hope you are walking around with a beaming smile on your face!!

Laurie – I’m so glad you figured out your shoe issue. Which Fleet Feet did you go to? I’ve been to the one in Marlton. The people there are absolutely wonderful! Oh, and konk koolers are a signature drink on the Disney Cruise ships and on Castaway Cay. I can’t even tell you what is in them, except that the combination of the drink in a tall souvenir plastic glass sitting on a beach chair IN the water on Castaway Cay is pure BLISS! Oh, but since nearly the only alcohol I can tolerate is rum, I’d bet it has rum in it. ;)

Meghan – I hope you are finding that your new shoes have cured your foot & leg woes. :goodvibes :cool1:

Jen – Thank you for the reminder. I remember now when you were going through that and you still did an awesome job on the race. I feel a bit more optimistic!

Tricia – I WISH I had a decent TM at home (ours isn’t very smooth, and the speed is not easily regulated), but I go to the Y. I am so grateful that I can do that. It is so conveniently located between my home and my office that on weeknights I can go from work to the gym to home and on the weekends I can go from home to the gym to work and it all feels like just the right routine. I can’t wait to hear how you like yours!

Mel – I am sorry your 10 miles were so brutal, but just think of how much better you are prepared for the heat on 8/12 than many of the rest of us. I am such a wimp – doing my miles on the TM. Just haven’t been able to bring myself to get outside. So, congratulations on getting the miles in! :thumbsup2 Now, as for whether you are overdoing it? It certainly sounds as if you are and you know you are. I think you have to step back from PRing CDC and enjoy it for the experience and the really cool penguin medal! Have the attitude that you are going to Chicago to have an awesome weekend with DD and to see your WISH friends and you are NOT going to push yourself so hard that you derail your WDW training efforts. Maybe we should rope and tie you to some of us at the back of the pack! ;)

Mike – you are a sweetheart! Thanks for the vote of confidence! Your August trip sounds like a dream come true, and I envy you your RFTT medal, but am so sorry you’ll miss out on all the fun at ToT. :sad1:

Shan – congratulations on your awesome runs!! Wow, and even with the heat and humidity that I’m sure you experienced in Florida! Very impressive! Have a great time in Vegas!

Dana – great job! That pace is awesome!

Stephanie – I love how you so casually just mention that you had to stroll a mile after running 10. Many of us would have called for a ride! :lmao: Great job!!!

Martha – congratulations to you and DS!!!!! I am so impressed!

Kim – GREAT pace!!!!!!!

Becky – great job, but I’m sorry you were scared the entire time.

Renee – welcome back. So sorry about the theft and the computer virus. Man, I’d be totally freaked out. I hope everything is back under control for you and there was no unauthorized access to your credit cards or bank account.

Christa – welcome back!

Lily – good luck at the podiatrist today!

Judy – sending you pixiedust: and :goodvibes for your surgery today! I hope all went smoothly!

Amanda – Welcome back to WISH, sweetie!!! Sooo happy to see you here!

Lynnda – It’s great to see you posting more frequently. I hope you get some good answers at the running store!

Kristi – That is a very sad story.

Dave – so glad to hear the furbabies are behaving. DS is really excited about HP and will go with a bunch of friends this weekend to celebrate his birthday. I’d love to go with them, but will have to be home entertaining all the adults and setting up for the party. DD wants to see it, too, so maybe she and Howard and I will do it while Andy is away at camp for 3 weeks.

Angie – Of course you can do it!!!! 6.2 miles is momentous!!! You just did a 10K!!! How many people do you know who have even done a 5k distance?

Heather – ouch!!! I hope the ankle is feeling better. Great job on the crunches and pool training.

Krista – I am NOT happy with you, young lady, for allowing yourself to get sunburned! Remember the combination of sweat and sun is not a good one. I bet you’re cute with freckles, though! Tell Stephen to put some aloe on your back. :grouphug: Thank you for the compliment on the picture! I bought 2 really nice but clingy across the midriff outfits for our WDW/DCL vacation and am still trying to figure out if I have the guts to wear them. :lmao: The only good thing is that the only people I know who will see me are Howard (who is completely blind to my bumps and bulges) and DDalmost19 who keeps saying she’s proud of my hard work and can really see the results.

Monte - congratulations on finishing an extremely challenging race!

Sunny – That is so adorable! Glad to see you here!!

No new training to report here. We drove Andy to the beach yesterday to spend the week with a friend and then were on our feet literally for more than 8 hours outlet shopping. Fun and I'm calling it cross-training -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it! ;)

For Mel, an article written by John Bingham:

"Better than Ever
When all you are is all you can be

One of my favorite books is a little tome by Jess Laire entitled "I ain't much, baby, but I'm all I've got" (Doubleday: New York: 1972) I happened to read it at an earlier time in my life where being what I was wasn't all I wanted to be. The shortest synopsis of the book is that you are what you are and you can choose to spend your life frustrated by what you aren't or learn to be grateful for what you are.

In those days my goal was to be in a major symphony orchestra. I had friends who, at least to my ears, were no better musicians than me and they had, or were getting, jobs in major orchestras. I was convinced that I had as much talent as they did. I certainly had the ambition they did. What I didn't have was the job they did.

Life in those days was a succession of heightened expectations, exhausting preparation, and debilitating disappointment as I searched feverishly in professional journals for position openings, practiced endlessly the required audition materials and listened hopelessly as I was told that I hadn't made it into the next round. It was a nightmare cycle of anticipation and letdown.

In the years since I stopped playing professionally, I seen hundreds of friends, colleagues, students, and even my own son go through the same cycle. Sure, a small fraction have actually distinguished themselves and gone on to a measure of success, but that only makes the reality of having missed the mark all that much more bitter a pill.

It doesn't take much imagination to see the parallels between being a performing musician and being a runner. Very early on, though, I vowed that I would not make the same mistake as a runner that I did as a musician.

Like most new runners I was overwhelmed with the kind of progress I was making at first. But, then again, as a 25 year smoker, just not hacking and coughing at the end of a run was progress. As weeks turned into months and months into years the angle of ascent began to flatten out. It didn't take very many years before there were no new distances, no sure PR's, and no guarantees of success. I had quickly come to the moment of truth as a runner that had taken me a lifetime to reach as a musician. I was about as good as I was going to get.

But unlike my life a musician, my life as a runner didn't have to be frustrating. As a runner I had a choice. I could choose to accept the standards set forth by the running community as a whole, or I could create my own personal running world in which I alone was the standard bearer and where I single handily could decide whether a run was good or bad. I had the choice of deciding if running was going to be an activity that enhanced my life or was simply one more area in which I wasn't able to live up to my own unrealistic expectations.

Clearly, I chose the former. I chose to view running - any running - as a gift. I chose then, and continue to chose to see myself as one of the most fortunate of people on earth. I am fortunate first because I can run and second, because I am a runner.

Too often, it seems to me, runners refuse to accept that, in Jess Lair's terms, they ain't much but they're all they've got. That's not to say that they should want to be better - however they define better. They can chose to want to go faster or farther or both. But it all has to happen in the context of accepting that what they are is what they are.

If what you are is a 2:20 marathoner, then by all means you should do everything you can to be one. If you're a 15 minute 5K runner.. then be that if you can. If, on the other hand, you discover that you're a 5:30 marathoner or a 45 minute 5K runner, then being that is what you are. And being that is plenty.

The largest race in which I've ever been a participant had 47,000 entries. 47,000. That's a lot of people running from one place to another. And I would argue that what they share in common is far more important than the differences in their finishing times. What distinguishes those on the starting line from those on the sofa is that the definition of their best is always subject to reevaluation.

So if you see me smiling while I'm running, don't be surprised. What I know for sure is that I am the best runner I know how to be and the best runner that I am willing to be. That might not be much, baby, but it's all I've got.

Waddle on, friends."

What a great article!
I needed that after being almost DLF this past weekend at my 5k.

Thanks Heather! :goodvibes

Thanks Heather for that article. :thumbsup2

Cam--I definitely would have called home to be picked up, but number 1 I forgot my phone:rolleyes: and number two I think it would've have taken as long for DH to load the kiddos up in the car and come get me, as it did for me to walk home.

Judy--thinking of you today--sending out lots of PD!:wizard:

Today I did some xt--did 30 minutes on the bike and then 30min or so in the weight room. Hope everyone is having a great week. Somehow, when I figured out our training for Akron, I ended up being a week off--so now instead of a backdown LR of 7 miles this week, it's a 12 miler!:sad2:

Hi Everyone,

I've returned from a mini vacation at the beach. It was very nice to get away, but now I've got to get caught up on laundry and buy some groceries. I hope to catch up on last week's thread later. I wanted to list my training since I never seem to get to it.

Wednesday 4 miles @10:23/mi
Friday 5 miles @9:54/mi
Sunday 10 miles@9:59/mi

Not really sure why my pace for the 4 miles was so much slower than the 10 miles. The 10 mile run was along the course of a race I will be doing later this month. I was happy to see it was very flat. My run was at 7:30 in the morning so it was still pretty cool along the ocean. The race is run at 6 PM, so I'm not sure I'll be so lucky come race time.

Mel: Sorry you're so down. I hope a little rest will help your foot. XT as much as possible so you don't have to worry about re-gaining what you've lost.

Shan: Congrats on 10K without walking. Good luck losing those 2 lbs.

Martha: Congrats on finishing your race. I'm glad you had a good time.

Leana: Congrats on your race. Great pace.

Becky: Nice job on your run.

Renee: Good luck with your marathon plan.

TnTsParty: Congrats on the TM. As much as I don't like running on mine, I'm very glad I have the option when the weather is bad.

MSMandy: Welcome back. Good luck with training.

Angie: Congrats on the 6.2 miles. That's great.

Monte: Congrats on your race.

Best Wishes to all I've missed.

Cindy

Happy Monday everyone. :)

Just a drive-by for me. Not much to report here. Training's OK. Minor foot pain persists. 17 mile LW (my longest ever) scheduled for Saturday.

Have a great week! Cheers!

Kelley

SOrry for being so behind. Houseguests Tue to Thur and tehn camping Friday to Sunday. Have the concentration span of a gnat at the moment, as I had an interview today with a company that I really want to get into. My brain's just not here. Went very well, so I think it's just a matter of time.

Anyway, did a lot of XT last week in teh pool with thmy brother's 3 kids then a lot of walking. Saturday I did 8. Pace stunk, but I finished. I'll have to post the map. It was sad!!! Very loopy, as ther is only one non-hilly place that has shadfe where we camped. MIL said no problem doing 8 in a 4 out, 4 back. The road ended at 1.3. :guilty: Did it, though.

I'll try to get my head back into grear and catch up soon!

P.S. WOuld have gotten the shirt orders up early, but I'm waiting for one last shirt price. I'll post tonight even if I don't get the last price.

We set out on a 6 miler this morning but Erica had an equipment problem so we had to abort the mission at 3 miles.

She has been wearing the Skirt Sport Gym Girl skirt and loves them. Well we found some at target for $15, (the Gym Girl is about $50), well we got a nice case of chub rub in the bargin brand. I guess you get what you pay for.

It was also very hot even at 8 AM, isn't summer wonderful to train in. Sure glad the Goofy is in January. I'll probably be fussing it's to cold then.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Judy)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) best healing vibes.

Dave:hippie:

Cindy - what race are you doing this month? I have been trying to find a race around here but haven't found any.

Shan - No, I haven't stayed in a BC before. We just bought points last fall at VB specifically so we could get a BC -I am so excited!! I will have to remember that about the wide sidewalk for my runs in October when I am there, I will be training for the donald half in January. Are you doing a race at disney in January?

Judy - I hope all went well today for you!!

Cam - I forgot to say before, congrats on your trophy! That is so cool!!

Becky

Becky, nope I'm just doing the Race for the Taste. DH and I have discussed me doing the half in 2009 and him the full. We'll be at WDW for NYE (This is starting to become a regular time for us as the girls have off the first full week of January from school.) and will miss it this time. It actually hit this past January while we were down there. (Although, I don't think I'm quite ready for something like that!) I'm hoping I can do the half in 2009 as I have been seriously contemplating getting a tummy tuck after Race for the Taste. :rolleyes1
I've heard it really takes awhile to recover. The thought of starting over worries me!

Take pics of the beach cottage. I don't think I've ever seen any online!

Christa, wow... bananas? My oldest is allergic to peanuts and my youngest mildly to milk. Will the corn be hard to avoid? Isn't there alot of corn in various products? I hope it isn't bad enough she needs an Epi!

FYI - still a pound over from my beach trip. It is amazing I can run three times those five nights and still come back with a weight gain. I'm dreading squeezing into that dress in Vegas! :sad2:

Becky: I will be running the Blessing of the Fleet 10 miler in Narragansett, RI on July 27th. It's the start of our week long vacation there. There aren't a lot of races this time of year, but check coolrunning.com for a few other races. I saw a 5K in Mashpee on July14, 4 miler in Osterville on July 21, 5miler in S. Dennis on July28, and 5.2 miler in Brewster on Aug 11. Let me know if you plan to do the race in Narragansett.

Cindy

Did 40 minutes on the elliptical tonight -- 3.22 miles -- 468 calories, according to the machine.

As I reported a few days ago, my left quad has been bothering me. I got some new shoes and rested on Sunday after doing only 2 miles on Saturday. Took it easy at work today and my legs were feeling pretty decent when I got home. My quad was just the tiniest bit sore. I decided to go ahead and do my training of 45 min w3/r2 and stick to an easy pace. Everything felt fine when I was walking, seemed a little stiff when I would transition from walking to running, but was fine once I found my pace running.

Long story short, by the last interval, I was feeling some pain during the first 10-20 seconds of running. I limped home, did some good stretching, and jumped into an ice bath. I am still hurting and I can't even identify which muscle is causing the pain. My hip hurts, my quad hurts, my IT band hurts, my ankle hurts, and my glutes hurt. I know that this all started with my quad, but I was also noticing some stiffness in my hip flexor that seemed to be the root of the irritation. Anyway, I don't even know what to do at this point and I am really frustrated by the whole thing.

I guess I should take another couple of days off and then try some XT before I hit the pavement again.

Cam, Anne, Mike - Thanks for all your words of support.

Heather - The Bingham article was great. I'd read it earlier, but really needed to see it again!

Angie
- It's amazing how much you can gain from reading everyone else's training reports. Last year at this time I kept thinking there was no way I'd ever be doing what other people were posting, and now I'm actually putting in those miles!

Christa - Can't wait to see if the scratch test confirms the bloodwork...

Renee - I'm still holding out hope that I'll be able to squeeze in ToT, but band competitions are really complicating things.

Went out for a 4 mile run tonight - temp was around 90 degrees with around 70% humidity. Had a couple of revelations. First, originally thought I'd actually try for a faster time, then remembered Heather's post with the Bingham article and decided there was no reason to kill myself in the heat. Just enjoy the run and be happy that I was out there. Second, not only have I made huge strides in the distance I'm able to run, last year I would NEVER have set foot outside when the temp was over 80. This year, I think nothing of heading out when it's 90. Believe me, I did NOT have this in me before I started running!

So yeah, I think I've recovered from my stonker on Saturday!

Jackie

Dave, Sorry about the equipment malfunction DW faced. Good to know the new babies are getting along well

Erica, Hope things aren't too raw.

Ok Mel and Lily, here I am.
...SO...my plan is for the 2009 half. I know it's a way off, but I want to get started now and give myself a head start.
...2) I am buying a pedometer at work tomorrow. I enourage my clients to buy pedometers but don't own one myself...
Great to see that you made it here. You'll be trading the pedometer in for a Garmin soon. Stick with us. You'll be a convert. :rolleyes1
Seems like you've thought this out well and should be successful for sure. It will be fun to have you posting here.

Heather, hope your ankle is ok. At least you were smart to get that pool exercise in.

Real quick note on my princess: 7 doctor's report...on her bloodwork to find out what she is reacting to.....
She tested pos for
Corn and cat hair.........That was a surprise b/c she does nothave reactions to these things....we are going to wait on getting the scratch test though and just keep her away from bananas (that is what makes her break out in hives and her face swell up), corn and cats!

OK back to lurking for a little while!
Christa, sorry about DDs allergies. Seems puzzling for sure. Lurking, no lurking! Come on out and play!

My friend, Monica, and I walked together and I thought she was going to quit during the first 4 miles up, but once she hit Mosiquto Pass she was a regular little mountain goat. I on the other hand could not see me making it to the top of the pass, so I sent her on and I would take 10 steps, then stop, the 10 steps, etc....but I finally made it!
The way back down was a breeze and the scenery was breath taking. We made it down in 7.5 hours, which is horrible time, but at least we were able to finish. Love the tee shirt, mug and medal! Also enjoyed meeting Martha and her sister and can't wait to meet everyone in Jan.
Glad you got to meet another WISH Team member. That is always great! Oh, and you made it! Good for you. I don't think I could ever accomplish what you and Martha have done.

OK and you have a friend Monica? I thought that was your name?

...SW Dave-- I couldn't resist personalizing WWDave's link; it's just too cute:

Sunny, I am so happy to have you back here. Oh, and that clip for SWDave is precious! What a WISH Team effort. Still sending PD that you continue onward!

Cam, WISHing you and Howard the best as your Andy gets to be off at camp and you have to suffer on your trip. Love that XT you got in with the shopping and that you came away with new w/o tihngs! Bonus!

Rhonda, what a wonderful article. Thanks for reminding us all!

Jackie, glad it went better now.

Judy, WISHing you the best.

Podiatrist went very well, he found that sliver thingy and got it out. What a difference. Pain is gone and it was not as bad as I had imagined. Whew! What a baby I was all up until he exclaimed that he got it! I should have gone sooner. Now all that has to happen is just a little cooler here. It has been hotter here than I think I saw it was in Miami. Hot, humid, yech.

Sleep well team...

Hey guys just checking in. My first day "back on track". I did 5300 steps on my pedometer today. Not awful, but needs improvement. But not bad for just being in the office from 8:30 to 7...lol. Tomorrow is the gym and I am planning on doing at least 2 miles of brisk walking (4.2).

For those of you in pain, hope you are doing better. Wish I had some words of encouragement but I have yet to relate...I'm sure I will someday.

Hi everyone!

I'm new here, and I was directed to this thread. I've read all the posts, and I'm so impressed by the races and the distances everyone here has run! I've just started stepping my training up to prepare for the WDW half marathon in 08. I missed the sign-up deadline (whoops) and was planning to run/walk the full marathon while my dad, who's also my training partner, cheered me on.

My dad wasn't a huge fan of that plan though, and he convinced me that we should run the half marathon for a charity. That way we could run together and help a good cause. We'll be running for the A-T Children's Project, and we're very excited to be able to finish the race together!

Now to the training:
Today I ran my longest run yet, 45 minutes straight at a 10 minute mile pace. I could have run a little longer, but it started to thunder so I headed home. Right now I'm working on getting my endurance up for the longer distance runs ahead. I've always run a bit to keep myself fit for dancing, but not at these distances!

Waking up bright and early is prooving to be the hardest part of the training so far! To beat the humidity I've been trying to get out before 7:30. Then I have a few hours before work. I like having the downtime after my workout, so I'll keep getting up with the alarm. It's hard though!
