Wk of July 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Christa - Welcome back!

Jen & Mel - Take it slow and easy and hang in there!

Renee - Glad to see you back. Are you doing either the half or full in Raleigh?

Meghan - What about that race? I hate to admit it, but the fight at the end was much more interesting than the race!

Jackie

Meghan - What about that race? I hate to admit it, but the fight at the end was much more interesting than the race!

You said it! I really don't like watching Indycars on road courses because they tend to be so boring. Word on the racing forums is that the fight was covered on ABC and NBC news tonight. I guess bad publicity is better than no publicity (which is what we usually get!). I can't wait for Nashville next weekend!

Kim, we are staying at the Venetian. I haven't been in years and years. DH has to go for work. We'll be there for three nights. I'm most excited about our Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love tickets! :hippie:

Becky, we had a great time at Vero. I'm so jealous about the beach cottage! Have you stayed in one before?
We did the Intro to Wine one night. Wow, we were a tad drunk that night. :rotfl:

Unfortunately, right now, it feels like it is. I guess it's my turn to be Debbie Downer. If I were a health care provider with me as a patient, I would put me on full rest, no running. My right PF foot is cranky, my left arthritis ankle is acting up and I'd swear I'm starting to get twinges of PF in my left foot. I really should have cancelled CDC, but then I found the women's soccer team was playing and knew how much it would mean to DD14 to see the game, I locked myself into the trip. I know if I go, unless I leave all my gear at home, I'll do the race, regardless of whether it's a smart idea.
I definitely think I've overdone it this year, but having a hard time getting off the train. I'm really afraid if I stop running, I'll lose everything I've gained (and gain back the 30lbs I've lost). It kinda hit home when I did the running clinic last month. I was the slowest person there pacewise, but had already done more races than anyone else for this year and had 3 more on the calendar. Maybe I need an intervention.;)
The most frustrating part is that my SR are great...sub 12s, but I do them in the evening when it's hotter with much lower humidity. My LR pace yesterday puts me over 3 hours for CDC. My only hope is that they don't have humidity in Chicago.
So I'm trying to figure out whether or not to do the 12 miler I have in 2 weeks, how long I can taper without losing my training for CDC, and if dropping my LR down to R3/W2 would be enough to improve things until the weather lets up abit.
Anyway, I don't want this to be all about me. I know a lot of people are training through injury for CDC right now, it's hot and humid allover, and I really have nothing to complain about.

Mel,

Not that I should be used as an example, but here is what happened with me for the Sarasota half. 6 weeks before the race I did 10 miles, then the next 2 weeks I did 3-4 miles twice a week, the long runs during this time were cancelled due to rain or illness. The next week I did 4.75 twice a week and a LR of 12.5 miles. I did one more short run of 3 miles then had to take the next week and a half off due to an injury. I did a 5k race the week before the half and then nothing until the half. So I only did 2 long runs and 9 short runs in the nine weeks between WDW and Sarasota. The time I took off before actually helped me and I felt better during the half and my times didn't suffer. I would recommend taking it easy and since you have done the distance in the past, you know what is needed and should be able to do it again.

Bill

Congrats to everyone who ran this weekend. Wow that Heavy Half sounds like it was a challenge. Glad you got through it.

Me and DH went out for a 3 miler this morning and then we went and bought a treadmill. Shouldn't have spent the money but I know it will get used. I was just on it a little bit ago messing around. I can't wait to do a full workout on it. I needed something to build my endurance and since I refuse to run at night and with the humidity and heat it doesn't leave much time to run. My DH is excited about it too. Its far enough from the bedroom that I don't think it will bother either of us if the other is running early in the AM or late at night.

Hi WISH Team!

Dena! Congratulations on K.I.D. wonderful news. You'll get back on track with your weight. You will. I can't wait to see pics.

Mel, sorry about the issues you are having. Like Bill said, you've got a good base so work on having a great time. That PR can happen or if not, the great time will! You can even play at the back of the pack. There will be team representation there!

Tricia, Yay! on the TM. I WISH that you will get great use out of it and not the "clothes rack" type of use either.

Renee, glad you had a good vaca, sorry about the theft and computer.

Yesterday I got my 7 miles in and managed a 14 min pace. Today DH and I walked the dogs and it was hot hot hot. We waited until it cooled a bit, did 1.5 miles at 22 min pace...dogs didn't need to go any faster. I go to podiatrist tomorrow for my foot. I'm hoping all turns out well. Kinda nervous about it. I hate that it might hurt to fix.

Judy, PD that all goes well tomorrow. Speedy recovery.

Ok Mel and Lily, here I am.

Hi Guys :) Some of you guys I may know. I was a WISH member and almost ran the 1/2 in 2005. A little about me...I live in Upsate NY, and recently divorced. I was married for 2 years while living in Northern Virginia. After the divorce I lived with my parents for a year to get back on my feet. I just recently moved out and got a GREAT job (it had been a long time since I had a job I liked!) One of the things I wished (haha...) that I had done was actually do the half instead of quitting half way through training.

SO...my plan is for the 2009 half. I know it's a way off, but I want to get started now and give myself a head start.

Since I started my new job I haven't been to the gym, it's been about a month since I have been, and I am going to start again this week. I am not quite up to running, no endurance, but I do walk.

My plan for this week includes 2 things:

1) The gym at least 3 times. Walking on the treadmill, at least 2 miles (I was doing 15 min miles). I also want to do some weight training and abs.

2) I am buying a pedometer at work tomorrow. I enourage my clients to buy pedometers but don't own one myself...

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell. I am looking forward to getting to k now all of you and can use any encouragement you have!!!

Great job on all the races and training this weekend! I am about to fall asleep on the keyboard, so will just do a drive by and catch up with you all tomorrow. First of all Disney was great, but HOT! Anyway, I walked Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this past week. I took Saturday and Sunday off because the PF is just getting worse and worse. I'm going to head over to the running store this week and chat with them about shoes and other ideas. Several things I've read said that the PF shouldn't hurt during exercise, but afterward and when first standing after a break. My right foot hurts all the time - at least anytime I have any weight on it. I need to do more research, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them! :thumbsup2

Off to sleep - hope you all have a great Monday!!! ;)

And yes, I'm speaking at ACCP if you want to come hear fabulous things about T4/T3 for hypothyroidism :thumbsup2

Mel - I think most of us adult onset runners are afraid of instantly loosing all that we've gained, or worse, loose the desire to keep at it. You've really changed your life and kept at it for a long period. You can definitely cut back for a while if your body needs to and still maintain a high level of fitness. Take it easy for a while, enjoy CDC and recharge for Mickey training.

Good luck with the T4/T3 speech. Maybe you could e-mail me a copy of your presentation. DW Kathy is hypothyroid and probably knows WAY more than I do. She tried having her GP manage it because her endocrinologist is kind of odd. The GP didn't get that even though Kathy's T4 was within the lab's normal limits it was still too low. So back to the nutty professor and 2 dosage increases so far.

Shan - We're heading down to Vero Beach next month. I'd be interested to hear where you ran.

Mel - no advice, just
You are doing a T3/T4 speech? Geez - I should pick your brain next time I feel 'off' but the docs keep telling me I am within normal limits - ugh.

I wanted to share an awful news story we are running this morning.
I guess it's just a reminder to be really careful & listen to your body when we are out there.

A TRIATHLON IN COHASSET TURNS TRAGIC.
ONE MAN, SAID TO BE IN HIS FORTIES, HAD TO BE PULLED FROM THE WATER.
HE LATER DIED.
FIVE OTHER ATHLETES WERE HOSPITALIZED FOR EXHAUSTION.
WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE NOT A PROBLEM, SO IT'S UNCLEAR WHY SO MANY PEOPLE HAD A PROBLEM.
THE RACE DIRECTOR SAID EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE MAN'S FAMILY.

(sorry for the caps - that's how the story is in the script)

Judy - good luck today!

Good morning Team!!!

Leana: Congrats!!!!!! You must feel awesome.

Sorry just quick drive by gotta get to work and it is HOT HOT HOT here.....uugghhh

Chat later
Kim

Good morning WISH Team. It's hot here in Southern Ky also. I had to drag my lady kicking and screaming out of bed so we could get our walk in before it gets to awefully hot.

We have a 6 miler planned for today. We have started our prep for the 2008 Goofy so 6 today and 8 tomorrow.

Our new furbabbies and our chocolate lab are getting along wonderfully. They play together and then often curl up together. The kittens will pur when the dog noses them or gives them a lick. They are excellent about not using there claws. They bat at us and the dog but it's with soft paws.

Erica and our dear daughter Mary are eagerly awaiting the new Harry Potter movie. Erica just finished rereading the book series and watched all the previous movies.

Everyone have a great day and stay out of trouble.

Dave:hippie:

I got in 1.5 on Saturday (waited too long, it was HOT, didn't dare push it) and 6.2 on Sunday (my longest yet, whoo whoo)

Feel pretty good, small pain in the back of my right leg, above my calf, but no foot pain!

Pace, not so great, but, it'll come...(I hope)

Love reading all your training and race reports, it keeps me thinking I really can do it, if all of you dont give up, there's no way I will either!

Have a great day!

Mike, by the pool at Vero Beach there is a pathway that leads to a tunnel that goes underneath A1A. Use it to get across the road. A1A has a wide flat sidewalk that seemed to go on forever. It was perfect! I got out there around 6 AM on my three runs and was fine. I don't think I'd want to go out there any later than that, though. I saw people coming in from their runs later and they looked miserable. The gym there looked nice, but I just can't bring myself to run on a treadmill. Have fun! :wizard:

Happy Monday WISH team! I am so proud of all our WISHers who pushed it to the limit this weekend in their races and in their training. :cheer2: Sending lots of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to Judy for her surgery today.

I managed to smack my ankle on DH's free weights yesterday. Why were they next to the desk in the office where I would least suspect them to be? :confused3 Anyway, I used ice and elevation to keep the swelling down. The ankle is bruised, but luckily I still have full range of movement in my foot. I ran in the pool yesterday and did crunches on my stability ball. Boy does my core need work! :scared1: I hope to hit the open road tonight and get in 3 miles.

Have a great day everyone! :)

Good morning WISH team!!! Remember me??? ;) Hopefully this week will be a little bit calmer and I can keep up with everybody. I think I read every post, just didn't have time to throw in my 2 cents. :) Even though last week was crazy, I did get all of my runs in--ended up doing 17 miles with 7 being my lr on Saturday. Oh my goodness was that miserable, I had planned on doing the run in the evening, when it was a little cooler, until I saw it was supposed to be 87 at 9:00. Of course it was about 10:00 when I saw that on weather.com and it was already 85 degrees with 72% humidity (as my nephew would say, "it was human!!" :lmao:) . I figured I had better just get out there and start running as it was only going to get hotter. By the first mile, I had sweat rolling off my arms and dripping on the road. :scared: I took Hines with me for the first couple of miles, he made it 1.60 miles, it was just so hot and he was really dragging. I ran the rest of my run slo-o-o-o-w, I finished in 1:27:32, my main concern was finishing the 7 miles, I didn't really care about my time as it was way too hot to push the pace. And the sun was intense! I wore 30 SPF sunscreen and I still got very noticeable tan lines and my freckles popped out on my shoulders. I ran the last 20 minutes with just my sports bra on and after only 20 minutes my back was starting to burn. It was crazy!! I have 3-4-3-9 this week, will probably do my 4 tonight as I have a hair appointment at 6:30 tomorrow night and won't be home until about 9:00. Not that running at 9:00 is a big deal, I'll probably run at 9:00 tonight to avoid the heat.

Mel-- I am so sorry you are in pain! I know what you are going through, been there, done that, more than once! Is there a way you can xt on an elliptical machine for a couple of weeks instead of running? I have done that more than once and didn't suffer any set backs. The elliptical really does simulate running and it will give your foot a rest. I hope you can find joy in running again!!!

Martha--Congratulations on your Heavy Half marathon!!!! I had no idea the race was that intense! I thought about you Saturday morning, as we were running about the same time with the time difference. Take some much deserved rest and enjoy your time in CO!

Judy-- :wizard: Thinking about you today!

Shan--Congrats on your 10K!!!!! Have fun in Vegas!!

Leana--Congrats on your half marathon!!!!! That is a fantastic time! You know, I had no idea until you mentioned it a couple of weeks ago that this was your first half. You work so hard and seem so dedicated, I assumed you have been running and racing for years.

Cam--I meant to tell you this last week, about the picture you posted of you, "Faith", and "Tim", I can really tell that your crunch/push up challenge is working. You look absolutely fabulous!!!!

WW Dave--Sorry about the charley horse!!!

Dena--Congratulations on baby Kane!!!!!!

Stephanie--Nice job on your 10 miler!!!! I hate when I mis-measure my runs! At least you got a nice cool down in. :)

Amanda--Welcome back!!!! :yay:

I know I missed lots of people, I hate only posting once a week! I will be better this week! I will be better this week!!!

Hi TEAM,

Just a quickie as I get ready for PT on my heel. Piggy backing on what Martha said about the Leadville Heavy Half. It was gruesome and I thought for sure that I was going to see "Jesus" that day! Seriously it was the hardest climb I've ever done. My friend, Monica, and I walked together and I thought she was going to quit during the first 4 miles up, but once she hit Mosiquto Pass she was a regular little mountain goat. I on the other hand could not see me making it to the top of the pass, so I sent her on and I would take 10 steps, then stop, the 10 steps, etc....but I finally made it!
The way back down was a breeze and the scenery was breath taking. We made it down in 7.5 hours, which is horrible time, but at least we were able to finish. Love the tee shirt, mug and medal! Also enjoyed meeting Martha and her sister and can't wait to meet everyone in Jan.

Real quick note on my princess: 7 doctor's report...on her bloodwork to find out what she is reacting to.....
She tested pos for
Corn and cat hair.........That was a surprise b/c she does nothave reactions to these things....we are going to wait on getting the scratch test though and just keep her away from bananas (that is what makes her break out in hives and her face swell up), corn and cats!

OK back to lurking for a little while!

Maybe there were some cats around the bananas?! I don't know... Hopefully keeping her away from the bananas will work. Poor thing!!

Dana

Good morning, WISH team!

I got out and did 30 minutes today. It was WAY too hot and humid; I am going to have to get up and out earlier. 30 minutes should not be that hard!

Jackie - I am planning on doing the half in Raleigh. It comes the week after the ToT, which I am also planning on doing. I think I'm going crazy!

Lily - Good luck at the podiatrist today!

Lynnda - Hope your right foot is doing okay. Knock on wood, I don't have any experience with foot problems so no advice from me.

Dave - Good job getting DW out there! We have been od'ing on Harry Potter in our house as well. DS is desperately trying to get through OOP so he can go see the movie when it opens.

Angie - Congrats on the 6.2! And you're right; the pace will come.

Heather - Definitely blame your ankle injury on DH. Hope you can run on it!

Krista - I'm with you fighting the heat. I do not like it one bit! Problem is, I also don't like getting up with the sun!

Monte - Congrats on finishing the LHH! Sounds like quite a challenge.

Christa - Corn and cat hair!?! What a combo. Did they test for bananas?

Sorry to anyone I missed.

Happy training, all! :)
Renee
