Wk of July 22--WISH Walking/Running Club

Totally LTO'd this week!

This week started with a midnight Monday morning run to teh ER because Scott got flash burn from welding. Many factors led up to why he was not using his eye protection as he should have, but I can guarantee it will nto happen again. Monday was ugly, but he approves about tenfold every day.

Changing job is good, but lots to do and lots of craziness! On the birght side, my last day of this hjob is AUgust 7 adn my first day of teh next is Aug 13. So, I will be ready for fun for CDC!!!!!

Reminder: Friday is teh last day for WISH shirt orders. The link is in my sig.

Thanks everyone for the advice! :goodvibes

I do need a new route, I'm really getting tired of my neighborhhod... It is just I go out before my DH leaves for work and the girls wake up. Maybe I should venture out once school starts? It just seems safe in my neighborhood, ya know?

Kristi, nice pic! :thumbsup2

Shan - I have to change routes on a regular basis. Fortunately we have a great greenway system, but even that gets tricky trying to find routes where I feel safe.

Carrie - I'm glad Scott's improving, but as the safety director for my office, it better not ever happen again! That's really scary.

Had to work late tonight getting ready for inventory tomorrow. Decided to run in our neighborhood when I got home (I usually do the park greenways.) Did 4.13 miles in 46:55 for an 11:22 avg - that's the best time I've done in non-race conditions EVER! Splits were 11:17, 11:25, 11:21, and 11:06 - so I was really consistent until the end when I really pushed to see how fast I could do that last mile.

Apparently there's a problem with my running in the neighborhood though - the dog cried the entire time I was gone, according to DD. It seems that if I drive to the park to run, she's okay, but if she can see me go down the street it's not so good! I've been forbidden to ever do that again.

:scared1: Oh, Carrie, I hope Scott is alright!

Yeah Jackie on your great split times!

Carrie I'm glad DH is ok, that is very scary

Jackie That is awesome about your times :dance3:

I ran 5 tonight and it was no where near as good as Monday, but I am just happy I finished ( I did walk quite a bit at the end). When I ran past DS's school the sign said 91 degrees @ 7:50 at night :scared1: Might have to do more running on the treadmill I just can't deal with the heat :headache:

Have a good night everyone!!

From what co-workers said when he went in on Tuesday, it was pretty minor. Not what I would have said lookng at him MOnday. :scared1: He was VERY lucky. I prayed with everything I had on teh way to ER, as I'd heard horror stories in my HAZWOPER classes. He is a welding novice and had a hand-held shield. So, he tried, but it was hard for him to get it going adn get teh shield up. He's not allowed to use his welder again yet (Dw's instructions), but he now has a full helmet with auto dimmer. It will NOT happen again. I'll take it as a blessing that it was just enough to scare the crud out of him and make him learn a valuable lesson. (Not that I would ever have wished it on him. We were both pretty darn scared.) He felt like an idiot for doing it, ubt many firends at work had csone it. The awful part? Several guys from work have done it at least 3 times/ :scared1:

Thansk fro your concern every one. It was awful MOnday, but it's healing really quickly adn teh doc says he should be fine. Things are still fuzzy maily because he has antibiotic goo in his eyes all the time.

On a happy note, I had an awesome 10-miler on Saturday!!! Better pace than my good run lsat week adn I had legs leftover at the end. SO, I know tha tI should be close to my normal self again come fall.

Has anyone seen solo??????

Carrie - My DF has been a welder for a very long time. Even as saftey conscious and knoweldgable as he is, accidents happen. It is so great to hear that your DH is doing better!!!!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

This brings me to a happy note. My DF returned to his old job today. It was rough on him and it will be that way for quite a while but it is certainly better than it was Monday :thumbsup2 Thank you all for the :wizard: and the kind words. I feel very honored and thankful to be part of such a wonderful group of individuals

I hope to be able to read back through the posts and get caught up soon :goodvibes

Carrie - Glad DH is going to be oksy. Sending :wizard: :wizard: to both of you.

I'll be off the boards for a week. Going away and won't have access to a computer. (I refuse to lug my laptop). I'll be keeping up with my walks for the week and hope to up it to 2 miles when I get back!

Happy training to all. No slacking while I'm gone ;)
Make sure you guys keep an eye on Kristi - she's been all GooGoo lately!:)

See ya in a week!

Terri

Hey all. I am still having a serious case of LTO/WTO. I just can't deal with this. I am so overwhelmed with no time to think.

So anyhoooo.... bad storms here tonight. I hit the TM and managed 35 minutes. I then heard lightening and got scared of losing power and flying off the TM. Plus my shins were not being nice. So I stopped at 35 and was happy I at least got on the TM in the first place!!!!!

Carrie - Oh dear, I am so glad DH is OK. Is your new job close?? I hope it is better than your current situation (like I should talk, I have a bad work situation too!). I am jealous your 10 miler went well. I am doing mine this weekend, but also have to work on-call all weekend. I really am not sure when I will have time to get 10 miles in... in between beeper calls.

Jackie - AWESOME times. WTG girl!!!!!

Angie - That is HOT! We are coming to WDW in 3 (?) weeks and I am really scared about the heat. But then I remembered I am going to be on vacation so I can be lazy in the heat if I want to!

OK, I better get something done before bed. I am always go go go that sometimes I have to look at the clock to make sure I am still on track to get everything done.

Nothing to report from me tonight. I've updated The WISH Team Calendar. Anyone else planning? Check it out and get your name on it so we can cheer you on!

Kristi

I know you have a long history with that band, but I really admire what they've done, plus I enjoy the music a ton too. They paid their dues and have EARNED the success.

Carrie

#1 - Okay, tell Scott to be careful. I know we men have a certain, ah, image we must project and protect at all times or we are removed from the club, but that sounds scary.

#2 - I still haven't heard about your new job. I see you are leaving the old and starting the new. Well?

#3 - 10 miles? Given your injuries 3 short months ago that is really impressive. I cannot imagine going from A to Z so quickly.

Way to Go Jackie and Angie.

Okay, here comes another long one. It doesn't involve my running, and it has its "ick" quotient, so you are warned in advance (parents have seen all of this already). And I have 2 excellent morals for all of us up front and in the story:

1. At our age it's better to be fit than fast, and

2. Never tie your championship chip in your laces.

Tonight was the "West End 3K" in Boulder. 4 waves in all, (1) a kids 1 time out and back for 1500 meters, (2) a family and friends 2 loop 3000 meter, (3) a competitive womens' 3000 meter, and (4) a competitive mens' 3000 meter. Adult winners received prize money, plus a bonus if they break the course record.

I hope to get 10 tomorrow morning so I went down to volunteer. I left my gear at home, otherwise the 3 year old in me would have registered on arrival and raced. It was fascinating to be at a big event and not preparing to run. I wandered around, watched it all, chatted with new friends, and talked to the race director who asked me to help cut off championship chips in the finish chutes. I well remember those wonderful folks at Disney who cut off my chips when I cannot even bend over and touch my shoes, so I agree.

The kids's race is ready and they go off. 1500 meters, out and back, and in abut 5 minutes we see the leader coming in. He finishes in 5:20, about a 5:40 mile pace, and looks to be 12. In my opinion he is WWWAAAAAAAYYYYYY to old to be in the kids race, and too fast. I've seen kids like this; he just wants a win tonight. He is at least 200 meters in front of the next finisher, and has gone out to his maximum. So much, in fact, that he looks like hell once he crosses the line. He cannot reach for water, he staggers around, he is asked if he's okay, and he says "no," and when another chip cutter (not me :thumbsup2 ) reaches to his shoes, the kid pukes his guts out all over the finish area. Luckily the chip cutter danced out of the way, but we now have vomit all over the finish chutes with about 200 little kids about to come in. The race director pours water all over it, but, well, it's still there.

The little kids come in, and it is too cute. 5 year olds don't understand that you need to come through the finish area, and they sure don't understand that they have $25 chips clipped onto their shoes. I start at the back of the chutes, assuming they will come to me. It's obviously been a long time since I've had a 5 year old, because they don't. They wander around in random paths, headed nowhere in particular, bumping into the posts, the ropes, the tables, and each other. I adjust and move up to the mats, and grab the kids when they cross the mats and get their chips. Of course, some come within 2 feet of the mats and won't cross, so I either encourage them to walk across, or I go get them. The kids race is over, 1 of 4 done.

Family and friends (and golden retreiver) goes off next. They do out-back-out-back to finish, so we cutters see them leave, return, go back out, and come right at us. This group is quite a hodge podge, some fast, some not, all having great fun. I get the second shock of the night. Many adults, likely intelligent, educated, and successful, cannot get it through their thick stupid skulls that the red plastic tie is to attach the chip to the laces. I clip a few chips off, and an adult comes in and says "it's tied." No **** Sherlock. I bend over and the dope has the chip wound through the laces, and the laces are then double tied. Can I strangle him now, please? There I am working on this fool's shoe while runners are coming into the finish and backing up the chutes. I am so tempted to just cut the laces and extract the chip, but I do untie it. Actually, about 10 runners' laces and knots I couldn't untie and I let them bend over and do it themselves. Serves them right. I hope they cramp up and walk hunched over for a week.

As a runner I hadn't thought much about this, but use the red tie, not your laces on the championship chip. The kind folks at the end of the race will love you for it.

The golden retreiver finishes, with owner, and the owner reaches down so the golden's chip beeps on the map. The cutters applaud.

The competitve women go off, and the course record for 300 meters in 9:40. If the winner beats this she gets winner money and a bonus. I quickly calculate that my 2 mile PR of 10:40 set in 1987 would bring me in 3000 meters in 10:00. So even in my prime, I couldn't run with this bunch of women. Lessons in humility abound lately.

The field is about 50 runners, and it goes very smoothly. The winner runs 9:51, so no bonus. She is absolutely flying when she comes into the finish. Martha, you are not allowed to read this, but I've had worse jobs in my life than kneeling down in front of lean and fit young ladies, and cutting off their chips.

The competitive men go off last, and I had been warned in advance, under no circumstances, to enter this wave. There are I guess 100 men out there, and they go off. The first group in the out and back are flying, probably 4:35 miles, and they look fast. As the rest of the field comes in you reach a point when they look slow, and they did. I then looked at the clock and saw these "slow looking" guys were at 6:30 for 1500 meters, about a 6:50 mile :scared1: . I am so happy to be working instead of running in this wave. The course record for this was 8:20, and the winner did 8:23 so again no bonus. We cut off chips and lots of my fellow males cannot seem to understand the red plastic tie is to attach the chip to your laces. Men! I know you women have known about us for years.

And, per the WISH motto, the DLF's in all 4 races received huge applause when they came across the finish mats. Instead of sitting on their fannies they signed up and got out there. The applause is well deserved and well received.

After I head out on my own for dinner and the Walnut Street Brewery calls out to me. I also notice many of my running crowd arrives as well, so we talk and eat and drink the evening away. I'm chatting with a fellow about my age who is likely a sub-40 10K runner, and I tell him that I'm out there, working and improving, but I realize I'll never see the times I did even 10 years ago. He tells me "at our age it's better to be fit than fast." God love you Carl, that plus he has coupons for $ off our dinner from the race director for us volunteers.

I now understand why those kind volunteers come out to our races, including Disney. I was doing a simple task, and most runners thanked me, and many placed a gentle hand on my back while I was cutting their chip. I could tell they appreciated that I came out to make their race more pleasant, and it was most satisfying. At Disney I always thank every volunteer who hands me a drink or gu, or cuts my chip, and I'll be doubly sure to do that in 2008.

Best to all in the heat and humidity of late July. January 13 is coming soon and I cannot wait to see you all there.

Craig

Hi Everyone,

We leave for our week long beach vacation this afternoon. I am really looking forward to it. Back in January on a snowy day when I was searching for vacation rentals I didn't think this day would ever come. But yea!! It's here.

I am running a 10 mile race tonight at 6 PM. It's part of a seafood festival in the town in which we are vacationing. (Narragansett, RI) While I'm out running the race my DH, DSis and Dkids will be enjoying chowdah and stuffed quohogs. They should be able to cheer me on at the start, the 7.5 mi and the finish. The weather forecast is for 80 degrees with 70% humidity. Hopefully there will be an ocean breeze cooling us off.

WWDave: Thanks for the good vibes.

Craig: Thanks for the encouragement. It’s nice to hear a voice of reason. Nice job on volunteering. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Hope you got your 10 miler in.

Judy: That’s the perfect reply. Thanks. I’m going to print it out and put it inside my training log to remind myself.

Dana: You make a very logical point that so many of you have signed up again after last year’s misery. Thanks.

Colleen: Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Vic: Get well WISHes to you.

Angietuck: Hope the back is feeling better.

Lily: Glad you got your hill workout in.

Bill: Thanks for another voice of reason.

Tricia: Good job on your speedy TM 5K. I hope your race goes as well.

Stephanie: I am training for a ½ mar in October then doing the full at Disney. Enjoy your vacation.

Lou: Sorry your calf hurts. Have you tried the stick? If it’s a tight muscle that might help.

Shan: Sorry you’ve lost your motivation. Do you have any local races you could sign up for? That might help. I was having a bit of an issue with my motivation last week so I went to the library and took out a bunch of books about running. I’ll let you know if I read anything that’s inspiring.

Monte: Congrats on signing up for your first full. Good luck.

Dona: Good job on getting your w/o in.

Leana: How was the concert? First the Killers and now Nickelback, we have similar tastes in music.

Christa:Good luck with all that biking.

Kristi: Great picture. Glad you enjoyed the show.

Carrie: Sorry to hear of Scott’s injury. I’m glad he’s improving. Congrats on a great 10 miler.

Jackie: Great job with your run.

We're bringing the laptop, so I may be able to get on to post a race report and keep up on everyone's posts, but if not I will "talk" to you all next week.
Cindy

Good morning teammates! I was hoping to get 10 miles in today, but unfortunately, I'm babysitting for a few hours this morning and I haven't packed a lick for our trip. So, I'm gonnna try to get a 3 mile speedwork w/o in and call it a day. That only means, I'll either be doing 10 miles on the hotel hamster wheel, or be doing some serious hill training in the Ozarks!

Craig--thanks for the volunteer perspective! I try to thank as many volunteers and police officers as I can during a race. Actually, I try to thank anyone that cheers me on during a race (except family though, they're required to cheer;) ) Sounds like Boulder has been a great fit for you this summer, too bad your lovely DW couldn't join you for the duration.

Carrie--OMG, I'm so glad that Scott is okay! My DBIL is a welder and he's come home from work one too many times scaring my Dsis with some accident or another. I'm glad Scott is recovering quickly. Congrats on the 10 miles!

Shan--Motivation is a hard thing. I think whoever suggested looking for another race in your area is a great idea. Having something sooner than RFTT in your future might give you the needed umpf to get out and lace up. I really believe that long distance training requires at least 60% mental 40% physical preparedness--my feet can keep going, but it's my mind playing games telling me to stop, throw in the towel. I still fight those mind game battles frequently! But I've found the more I come and check in with my WISH teammates, the better I feel and the more motivated I am!

Okay, I really need to get off here and start packing for our weekend jaunt. It was so much easier to pack before kids--I could just throw some stuff in a bag and be done with--but all the extras that I have to bring now--ugh! Anyway, well, I think our family drama has actually worked out in my favor--sort of. FIL and his girlfriend are going to come with us in jan (not bad, not good) but in order to accomodate them we are going to add-on to our DVC contract!:woohoo: This does mean that I'll be giving up my BCV--so anyone on the waitlist for a studio, good luck. But after calling member services yesterday, I think we'll end up with 2 1 bed. at BWV--we'll see--still waiting on my guide to call me back. I'm just hoping that FIL and his GF don't cut into my WISH get togethers--they'll just have to suck it up and join us, or let me do my own thing! OH, and don't ya'll worry--just b/c I'm not at the BC anymore, doesn't mean I'm giving up my spot for the kitchen sink!

Okay, really going now!

Jen - :wizard: :wizard: :grouphug: Hope we can get rid of some of that stress for you ina couple weeks!!!

Craig - Bet you never thought you'd have such an adventure last night! Sadly, there are still some chip packs that show tying your chip in your laces. Perhaps you should start a protest. ;) Your stories remind me of DIsney 06. Scott could not find out why this woman would not leave him alone. Porr thing, he's trying to shoe her away adn she had to darn near tackle him to get his chip. :rotfl: Meanwhile, being the lazy marathoner that I am ;), I found a lovely little bench and a nice man followed me to it. :teeth:

Old Job Update: The Wednesday after I got back frm marathon, ther was a final blow with politics at my company. It was likely just the final shove I needed, as I had been burnign out for a while, but it made 9 hours a day for 6 months rather miserable. Add teh nerve oain I had in my leg and the fact that I took a lot of time off to heal (which meant I was getting no stress relief) and I have been one unhappy camper. It's a wonder that Scott put up with me. On the flip side, my misery is likely the only reason I get to do ToT! ;) Between teh tough job market in MI and the fact that I have been rather pigeon-holed, the job search has been rough.

New job update: Tow of my former co-workers work fro Nirvana of teh consulting world. The owner has this odd beleief that if he takes care of his employees adn show them a little appreciation they will work hard fo rhim adn everyone will eb happy. Crazy, I know. ;) Sadly, they do not do what I do, though. I finally got my courage up to approach teh owner around teh end of May and pitch adding my services. We had an awesome interview, as I was even more shocked to hear theories that would make other consulting firm owners have heart failure. Working 40 hours a week with straight time over 40 is a direct contradiction to being paid for 40, required to average 45 adn being told fairly often how much $ just one more hour a week would give teh company.

Well, not only does teh owner want to add some of my services, the ones I'm really burned out with will not be added, and he's willign to pay the wadges of a person with 14 years experience while letting me start learning other fields. You see, he wants all of his employess diverse and wants them to stay long term. He has many people my age that he hired out of college and are still there. It's just amazing. Now, I know that they work hard, but beign appreciated makes a world of difference. I can already feel some of the stress melting away. I do have a lot to do to wrap up before I leave, though. So, I'll likely be scarce a little longer. The sad news is that I will likely not be on teh baords durign the day. I'm going to try that work ethic thing again. ;)

Thanks everyone for your congratulations and you concern about Scott. We both appreciate it greatly!

I clip a few chips off, and an adult comes in and says "it's tied." No **** Sherlock. I bend over and the dope has the chip wound through the laces, and the laces are then double tied. Craig

Ok, now I feel like a real Jack***. Seriously, at Disney I was so terrified that my chip might fall off that I put it through the laces too. I don't think I would have done it for a shorter race, but in the marathon I was so afraid I would lose it and would not get an official finish time. Luckily, the woman at the end saw how embarassed I was when I realized I had done it wrong. I told her I would untie it (truthfully I really wasn't that sore) but she wouldn't let me. She undid my double knots and untied half of my shoe to get to the chip ( I told you I was paranoid), then she even tied my shoe back for me. One of the sweetest people I ran into at the race this year.

Well, yesterdays run was a mess if there ever was one. Michael went to run 2 miles, and no lie complained the entire time. Finally he finished and he rode in the stroller while my Mom pushed and let me run my 3 miles.

It was already 10:30 by then and it was getting REALLY hot, but I wanted to push myself and see how fast I could do it. I ran 3 miles in 24:53. My first mile was 8:01, the second and third I couldn't tell you because I just couldn't seem to do the addition and subtraction to get my splits. Had to walk a couple of times in that 3rd mile. It was just getting too daggum hot to keep running. I got sunburnt, I think because of my anitibiotics (it's one of those that says avoid prolonged exposure to the sun), and my running clothes were soaking wet. But I came close to breaking an 8 min mile!! How freakin' cool is that?!

Yesterday evening I had DH talk to Michael about his running, and how he seems so miserable when he does it. We have told him that he doesn't have to force himself to run, and that if he doesn't like it not to do it. The consensus after their conversation was that Michael likes running because he likes the way he feels when he is done, but he doesn't actually like the running while he is doing it (especially in the heat). He wants to keep doing it, and REALLY wants to run the 5k at Animal Kingdom. So we are going to keep training. Today I have to run and pick up another copy of his birth certificate so he can start football on Monday. It's his first time playing sports on a team and he is really excited. I'm more nervous I think, but we'll see how it goes.

Dana

Good morning WISH Team.

Craig, the 3K is one of our walk race distances. My PR is 19:02 so I would be way back in that race. I'd be like your kid, hurling all over the track, trying to keep up.

Tomorrow I have a race that I have a bone to pick with. I was a DLF last year.

C:\Documents and Settings\dave kirgan\My Documents\Purple Striders 5K - PurpleStriders5K 022_jpg.mht

This is me and the chase car. Erica loves teasing me about this one.

I will have Erica at the finish getting a picture of me NOT finishing last. I can do this.

Everyone have an awesome day.

Dave:hippie:

Unfortunately I can't pull a Kristi since I don't have any great group shots of me and Nickelback because...well...I wasn't lucky enough to meet them! What an amazing show last night though! I have been lucky enough to see The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, The Tragically Hip and Nickelback this year. I have to say, by far, the Nickelback show last night was my favourite.

Nickelback.jpg

Apparently there's a problem with my running in the neighborhood though - the dog cried the entire time I was gone, according to DD. It seems that if I drive to the park to run, she's okay, but if she can see me go down the street it's not so good! I've been forbidden to ever do that again.

Jackie - Too funny! I don't run my neighborhood anymore either for the same reason!!! That's OK, it was getting a bit boring seeing the same houses all the time anyways.

Carrie - :wizard: PD for you and your husband! Good luck finishing up the old job and starting the new one.

Craig - Loved your story! I really enjoy volunteering too. I wish I could do more of it.

Dana - Your ds sounds like me. Except on those rare nirvana days, teh run itself is no fun. The sense of accomplishment is great, though. Good for him for sticking with it adn good for you fo rmaking sure that he does not feel forced!
