Wk of Jul 2--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey, Christa – You are my hero!!! :worship: Congrats on the WW sub-goal WI! :thumbsup2 You should be so proud of yourself for working so hard. Thanks for the reassurance that DD’s swelling is not unusual. I know she is self-conscious about it, but I am just glad she isn’t still in pain. And, she, like you, was in such bad shape that our health insurance covered the surgical procedure and the IV sedation. Thank God! I am just glad it is done before she leaves for college, so she won’t be in pain or discomfort there.

Soooo - speaking of being 180 days out, has anyone figured out ADRs yet? I know Friday night is set with our WISH meet at POR, right? But where are the marathoners eating Saturday night? Did anyone do anything good last year? I haven’t seen much in the way of carb-loading foods at any reasonably-priced restaurants and would love to hear any ideas. I still want to do our celebration dinner at LeCellier like we did after the ½. I just hope my “GOOFY” DH will be able to walk from BCV to EPCOT for that. :teeth:

We were actually thinking California Grill for Saturday night. We ate there the night before our wedding too. Seems like it's a good spot to celebrate great accomplishments!

:goodvibes

Hi Everyone!

I'm more of a lurker than a participant so far but I just wanted to let you guys know how much I appreciate all the valuable information you provide - at the beginning of this link and throughout.

I do have a question for all of you in the know...

First some background. Due to the encouragement of a good friend, I have signed up to walk/run in the 1/2 marathon at WDW in 2007. She participated last year and really enjoyed it.

I have been inactive for quite a while (and I'm overweight) but I do enjoy walking occasionally and I've been gearing myself up to really get with a training program to walk and add some running in there as well. I have carved out the time that I need to seriously train over the next several months and I really, really want to succeed. However, in reading John Bingham's book "Marathon for Mortals" and other information by various authors, I kind of get the impression that since I've been inactive for quite a while (ie, not been walking on a regular basis), it may be too late for me to seriously train for January's half without injuring myself.

I have no health issues, past fractures or really anything in that nature holding me back....I just don't have the strength in my legs and feet just yet.

My question is this: Is it too late for me? I am planning on signing up with a personal trainer to help keep me on track each week. I realize that obstacles may come my way, other things can happen but I just want to know that if I seriously make the effort to train from here on out, and keep with it, that I do have a good chance of being able to participate in the half in January.

What do you think? Sorry so long.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Susie

I ran with my running group last night and we were out for an hour. WOW, it was a long one. We covered about 4 miles, with warm up and cool down walks. One of the leaders said she would help me train for my 1/2. She wants to do Goofy in 2008. She said she would help me this fall with my long runs if I wanted. How nice.

CAM - CONGRATULATIONS!!! You did awesome. I was super excited on my 5K when after mile one they yelled out 12.31 Great Job. Oh, and the person above that said she would help me run is the one that was doing the yelling. So supportive.

OH and we are doing Ohanas on Saturday for a celebratory dinner. There is nothing like a pile of flame grilled meat!!!! My girls love the coconut races, tho last time we were there they didn't give out gummy worms.

I am still curious, is there still any discussion on an Illuminations gathering??

Susie -- First of all, :welcome:
Second, I really don't think it is too late. Right now you can "train to train" -- that is, get out for walks whenever possible, try to do something other than walking as cross-training, and nourish your body in a smart way to energize it. I think the Marathoning for Mortals "walk a half marathon" training plan would start late September. So, between now and then you should get into the habit of walking and walking quickly. The sub 16 minute pace is not easy to maintain until you are accustomed to what that feels like and can keep yourself in motion. Work on stride and posture. Most importantly, find a really good pair of athletic shoes. I use running shoes even though I mostly walk.
Checking in here frequently helps us all stay on track and stay motivated. After all. 7 months can seem a long way off, until we realize how much conditioning we want to do to be able to pull this off without injury.
Good luck!

Monte, Copper Mountain looks great! Your husband definitely looks like he knows what he is doing. My husband is retired Navy, so you know where we have lived..beaches!! I'm a mountain person! I doubt that I could train on them though...whooooo wheeeee!

Here are two sites that explain the placement of the pedometer and why:
http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778,s1-2-68-172-4113-1,00.html
and
http://www.wellness.lanl.gov/svc/motive/10k/pedtips.htm

If you still have questions, find the brand name on your pedometer and do a search on the computer for the company that makes it. They should have instructions on where your model should be worn.

Christa, how AWESOME!! What a sad person your MIL must be if she can't see how incredibly fit you are!! 12 miles??!! a 9 minute pace??!!! :worship: Your "I know I'm running in the South" list may have started something..I'll add #5 The humidity is 80% at 6:30 am!

Cam, we have a WISH meet firmed up for WDW?? It must have been while I was sleeping..siiigghhhh. I knew we were talking POR, but didn't know we had a time. :confused3

Kristi, so glad your arm is better today! Hey, if you get those times when you run in the heat, no wonder you are flying when it's early in the morning on race day!! :teleport:

Minnie, have a pain free GREAT time!! pixiedust:

Kevin,
At least I have the hotel(s), flights, ADRs, park tickets, towncar and race registrations taken care of...... now all I need to do is go! (oh, and that pesky "training" thing.....)
:rotfl2: So, true!! Glad you have your training schedule worked up!!

Judy, Have a WONDERFUL time, it's ITALY!! Maybe you and DH can get "lost" a few times and not be able to meet up with MIL?? :moped: Maybe MIL will meet some Cruisin' Dude who will want her all to himself!! :groom: It could happen....What happens on the cruise, stays on the cruise..right?

Jen, see? Aren't runner people nice? You are doing great!

OK, off to cross train. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!! party:

Kristi - -Awesome! And how wonderful and generous of that trainer to offer to help you this fall. I am going to be so lonely through training and certainly intimidated. Trying not to psyche myself out, though.

I must admit I am kind of jealous of everyone who will be celebrating Saturday night. Once again, I am wondering what mind of a  I am to have signed up for the full. So, we are looking for a carb-load option for Saturday night before we both do the full Sunday. Any ideas?

Kristi - Phil is a TC surviver too! I think we are 6 yrs out now (we've actually lost count, which is a good thing :thumbsup2 )

Christa - way to go being under your WW goal! We need some pregnant bree pics!!!!!!!

Went kayaking w/ the boy today. It was so much fun. He paddled about 50 meters b/4 he said he was too tired so i got a good upper body workout towing him around on the windy lake!! We saw a buck in velvet, fawns and really beautiful cliff swallows flying in and out of their nests. It was a perfect summer day!! I have to go take the kayaks off of the car now (UUUGGGGHHHH!!!)

Cam-you are so sweet to offer! But he is only 8! (going on 25!) Great job on your race :cool1:

Jen-that is great you will have someone to train with :thumbsup2

Susie-Nope, its not too late. You are ahead of where I was last year. I signed up for the 1/2 at the end of July and was a big 'ol couch potato. I'd never done an event of any kind, nor considered it. This group inspired me to get off my booty! I used the MFM book to train & it worked well. I was a little worried like you when I saw everyone recommend being active for a year before doing it but baring injury, you should be fine. Definately train to train now. And yes, if you put your mind to it there is no doubt that you can do it :cheer2: I am of the "If I can do it anyone can" group. The atmosphere at the race is so great & everyone of every skill level feels like they belong there. Good luck , keep us posted!Watch out though, as alot of us can tell you, its addictive. I'm traveling accross the country in 10 weeks to do the DL 1/2 :teeth:

Christa-Congrats on WW :yay:

Kevin-Awesome job on your run! Feels good to get back into the groove doesn't it?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Cam - Great job on your 5K! And I so want to do the Philly event with you. I've been whining about it for weeks, hoping that DH will think that I'm not crazy to try a trip to Philly for a long weekend. But so far, he just looks at me like I've lost all sanity. I even read your post to him and got the same look! We're huge cycling/Lance fans, and I'd love to support the cause, and it just seems like a great race.
Also, DD had her bottom wisdom teeth out last week too, and the swelling took 5-6 days to subside. The pain was gone before the swelling and bruising was. We just got back from her recheck with the oral surgeon.

Christa - Isn't running in the south great? I love the saying "morn'n" to everyone! If we could only turn down the humidity... although I have to admit this weekend is just about perfect. And I could skip the whole Nascar thing - DD has become an Indy car fan (might have something to do with a very hot young Marco Andretti!) and we feel like complete aliens in this state!

DD and I are spending the weekend planning our girls' weekend trip to California in 2 weeks - including a quick trip to DL. We're going for a wedding, but squeezing in as many hours as we can at the park while we're there. Of course, friends and family think we're nuts, but they just assume it's part of the Disney obsession!

Have a great weekend!

MelR - Chad is 3 years out now. He was actually diagnosed while I was 8 mos. pregnant and on bedrest. Talk about a crazy month! He also did a month of elective radiation after that just to be safe. His urologist is very confident that things are ok - so much so that he now is going for his CT scans every year (instead of 6 mos.). I want to do some sort of big family trip in 2 years to celebrate his 5 years cancer-free. I know his case was extremely curable. But it was cancer for goodness sake! And (as Chad would say himself), he's half the man he used to be! :lmao:

Susie - the Half is definately doable for you! I only started exercising in January and completed the Minnie 15k in May.

I did get out for a 3 mile wog up here at Lake Sunapee this afternoon:
12:59
12:34
13:16
38:50 very good for me considering the hills here - we're at the base of a ski resort.

Speaking of Sunapee- if anyone is ever here for vacation or something, let me know. We are up here most weekends in the summer at my uncle's house on the lake. I'd love to meet up!

Also, speaking of kayaks - I was able to go out for a spin with Chad on our new tandem one while Zack was sleeping. I didn't paddle because of the arm swelling. Rather, I was chauffeured around a canal I never knew existed. Pretty cool - I think I am liking Chad's Father's Day gift! :teeth:

Tomorrow is 30 mins. xtraining - so I think I'll take Zack for a paddle boat ride in the morning.

Christa - very inspiring! You are awesome.

I must have pushed myself a little too hard this week after being too busy to workout for 8 days. My hip has been a little sore so yesterday I ran 3 and walked 2 miles. Today I swam a little over a mile. I think I will take tomorrow off to rest or swim again.

Haven't heard anything from my DS11 who is on day 10 or 20 in England with the Student Ambassador program. I guess that means he is having fun!

Thanks for all the words of wisdom!

keenercam, TiffJ, Kristi1357 - Thanks for you words of encouragement. :goodvibes I feel in my heart that I can do the half but I just needed to hear it from those that have been there AND to make sure that I am not just living in some fantasy world. I think this is an incredible goal, for me at least, and if I can do this....well, I think I'll be on :cloud9: for a long time after.

TiffJ - the friend that encouraged me to sign up told me how addicting this can be. :teeth: Since her first run (WDW 2006 half-marathon), she has competed in several 5Ks, will do the half at DL in September, a full marathon in October in San Francisco and the half with me in January. I don't know if that's a lot or not but it sure sounds like it to me.

Susie-- I "ditto" everything Cam said. I think that so long as you are starting now, you should be fine. I really do like the Marathoning for Mortals programs... very straight-forward and very doable for newbies. Heck, it got me to the finish line!! :thumbsup2 Welcome!!

Cam-- Re: Saturday night carbo-loading options---- last year, I ended up at Lotus Blossom Cafe in China with Veggie Lo Mein. Not the best, but it did the job. I had scouted all the usual suspects in terms of sitdown places, but I didn't want a really heavy meal for fear of race-day problems (and I was nervous enough as it was...)

This year, it'll be Rainforest Cafe (Rasta Pasta) for lunch after the half and then probably something back at the Poly for dinner (Kona? Room Service?) After the full, I was planning on a celebration dinner at Les Chefs de France..... which better be a big meal, since I don't think I will be able to move after 39.3 miles in 30 hours. :joker:

:cool1: Just made a couple of ADRs for me and DD,21!

Here is what I have planned so far:

Thursday night - Hoop-de-do Review. Disney won't start taking reservations for this until next month.

Friday night - WISH dinner at POR

Saturday night - ???

Sunday night after the full - ADR at Grand Floridian Cafe, then over to MK for EMH if I am up to it, otherwise back to Pop for an easy evening

Monday morning - WISH breakfast TBD?

Tuesday lunch - ADR at Prime-Time at MGM

Rhonda was going to try and organize an Illuminations Dessert Party, which DD and I would love to do. The official WDW site has January hours posted, and there is EMH at Epcot on Tuesday, but I can't tell if that is AM or PM hours.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: This is going to be awesome!!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry – I kind of dropped out of sight. I wasn’t feeling so hot most of the week. I can’t wait to call and make my ADR’s today.

Soooo - speaking of being 180 days out, has anyone figured out ADRs yet? I know Friday night is set with our WISH meet at POR, right? But where are the marathoners eating Saturday night?
Saturday, I’m getting together with my friends (Heather and Jim) we will most likely (hoping times are still open) be going to LeCellier. If anyone bumps into me that night, feel free to come over and say “Hello”

Looking forward to get the get together on Friday at Port Orleans, 4:00, right?.

Hey Question about the Garmin – I’ve always tried to pace myself with it but when doing my last 5k it was all over the place saying I was behind, the I would turn the corner and I was going too fast. It was killing me! Does everyone have this problem? I blamed it on the huge buildings in Hartford.

(Mel) Chimera congrats on joining the “Race for the Taste” I would love to that one year – but when I go in October, I go in late October.

(Random Thought) The most bizarre thing is I am starting to have dreams about Disney World and the trip in January :cloud9: ….. Anyone else doing the same?

Saw POC last night – pretty good, I want to go see it again…..I wasn’t able to fully join it because the people next to me were talking (oh well). I was surprised that my husband wanted to bring me with Johnny Depp  in it and all.

I will try and check in again a little later with everyone!

Oh and Judy – here is the link to the information about the Bigelow: http://www.bigelowtea.com/race/

Good Morning Team! :wave2: (if I can even still call you my team since I haven't been here in forever...)

I just got back from a wonderful 8-day trip up to Pennsylvania. It was amazing but it sure did my diet in. All I did was eat, eat, eat, eat! Let's put it this way. I gained 9lbs in 8 days!!! :earseek: Can you believe it? I gained more than a pound a day. I had things I hadn't eaten in almost a year. Fries, real pizza, potatoes, tons of chocolate, and even an freaking IHOP funnel cake breakfast. What was I thinking??? But I went up there knowing the diet was sidelined for the week. A 2-day stop in Hershey, PA was first on the agenda for goodness sake. :rotfl: And at the end I am proud to say that I am ready to hop back on my diet and into exercise. In the past, a binge like this normally would have caused me to give up and gain all my weight back but not this time. :cheer2:

Here's what our vacation entailed. It was really really fun.
1. Hershey Factory with dinner at Hershey Pantry for our 4th Anniversary. :love2:
2. HersheyPark
3. Trip through Amish Country with a horse & buggy ride. Dinner at family style Plain 'N Fancy. The town was called Intercourse, PA. How could we resist? DH and I are both now proud owners of Intercourse, PA Tshirts!
4. Sesame Street Place. Breakfast with the characters.
5. Sesame Street Place. Dinner with the characters.
6. Philadelphia Children's Please Touch Museum. What fun!
7. Philadelphia on 4th of July! Just a VERY fitting coincidence. We toured Independance Hall, saw the Liberty Bell, and watched the 4th of July parade and fireworks! The town was buzzing! It was great. :thumbsup2
8. Crayola Crayon Factory. :rainbow:

It was a 13 hour :drive: for us. We split it into 2 days on the way there, but we drove all the way home in one day. I'm praying some of my weight gain is from being so bloated from the long drive, but probably not. :confused3

Anyone have a copy of MFM hanging around? I loaned mine to a friend. Could someone please post the Week 1 schedule for RUN-WALK 1/2 Marathon for me? I've been out of it for so long that I'm seriously having to start over here. But I'm looking forward to it! Thanks!

Just for myself:
I would like to recommit in writing that I am restarting my diet today July 8, 2006 and that I will exercise tonight for 30 minutes. I will not get discouraged by how fast or how long fellow teammates are running. I will encourage them and focus only on where I am. I will stick to my training schedule even if I have to do it alone. No one can do this for me or prevent me from doing it.

Good bye everyone!!!!

We are headed for the airport :moped:

Hope you all have a great week!!!!!!

Minnie

Hi RunningLilo!

I was in Pennsylvania the week before you visiting Hershey Park and Amish country. Oh, and yes, we had to get t-shirts from Intercourse as well. :teeth: We didn't eat at Plain and Fancy but we did the Amish tour, saw the Amish Experience Show and "typical" Amish house from there. In addition, we ate at an Amish Farm for lunch. Had a great time!

As for the MfM - I've just finished reading it for the first time. Here's the schedule for week 1:

Monday:
Run/Walk, Moderate Intensity (I), Heart Rate (HR) - 60-70%, I-Rate 6-7.5
35 min: Run 3 min/ Walk 2 min Repeat 7 times

Tuesday:
Cross-Training, Moderate I, HR - 60-70%, I-Rate 6-7.5
30 min

Wednesday:
Rest

Thursday:
Run/Walk Form, Moderate I, HR - 60-70%, I-Rate 6.5-7.7
35 min*: Run 3 min/ Walk 2 min Repeat 7 times
* After the walking cooldown, perform 4 stride drills by gradually increasing your running pace for 30 seconds until fast but controlled pace is reached, focusing on form and quick footstrike. Follow with 1 minute of easy walking. Repeat 4 times.

Friday:
Cross-Training, Moderate I, HR - 60-70%, I-Rate 6-7
30 min

Saturday:
Endurance Run/Walk, I - Comfortably Brisk, HR 60-75%, 6-7.5
3 miles: Run 3 min/Walk 2 min, Repeat continuously

Sunday:
REST!

Good luck with your training! I'm just now starting this process. I hope I can stick with it! Enjoy!

Pat-- I didn't even realize that the hours and EMH info was out already...... and wouldn't you know it, I have to make a change to something. :guilty:

Jodi-- It could be the tall buildings, no doubt about that. I have read product reviews from New Yorkers that basically say "don't bother" because of difficulty getting a good signal.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I have finally done it. I managed to make it nearly one entire year in this happy group, and now I've gone and done it---- I've hurt myself. :guilty:

Did you forget to stretch before you ran? Nope Did you go out too fast? Nope! Actually, I tweaked something putting away dishes last night. At the time it was just a little twinge on the inside of my knee and it didn't bother much at all for the rest of the night. This morning, however, it was very tight indeed. I stretched really good and tried to give it a whirl, but that wasn't happening today. :( So I'm icing it down and taking the day off. My best guess is that it's muscular as opposed to something more serious, but if it lingers to Monday I'll have one of the ATs at work look at it. I guess better this happen now than 3 months from now, right??

Happy training all!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:
