Wk of Jan. 27th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Hello all! I'm trying to decide if I should train for what is said to be the last Minnie, or schedule knee surgery. It's a huge dilemma 'cause I'm not sure if I want to miss having all of the Minnie medals, not to mention that I have add points to my score after my mother beat me last year! So, at this point we're at me- 1 and Mom- 1. Anyway, I may or may not be at the Minnie this year. Oh! I've also got a busy schedule with my honors classes and working =Really Confused,
Kaley

I was just reading Stephen's post to you and it made me think of the situation I have been in lately. In just a few weeks I will be 34 and I still have a hard time thinking long term and for the future, seriously :confused3 but my back injury and marathon training has changed that.

I have been DYING to get back out there running but I initially started back too quick and my back was killing me and I was NOT happy at the thought of never being able to do it again.

For the past couple of weeks and even months really, every time I really wanted to get out there I would just think of not being able to do it at all anymore and I would do light weights and core and not push it. I know it sounds so cliche and it is easier said than done - BELIEVE ME I KNOW but there WILL be so many more races.

If you think that the surgery will help you in the long term (like the rest of her life) then do it!!! It's a tough decision but we are here for you.

Hi Everyone :wave2: Thanks for the warm welcome :goodvibes:
I am such a newbie to all of this but so excited. I'm arming myself with books and looking forward to watching those miles add up! You are all so much encouragement and I look forward to being a part of you and getting to know all of you!

Steve Thanks for the advice, sounds like we are a lot alike because normally I am like you. (maybe it's the engineering thing :confused3 ) I would not want to hurt anyone's feelings so I would probably wait till that morning too. But we need to decide if DH is even signing up. So I guess, as much as I want to blame her right now, the decision is on me. Do I want to do this race just for fun, which I have never done,or do I want to try to PR with him?

One of those things, ya know??

Thanks for helping me think through this thing out loud. And especially for all the new people reading this I want to re-itterate what Steve said. That is one of the things that is SOOOOO cool about this team. Everyone is on different levels, and everyone RESPECTS that so that everyone can reach that full potential.

Hi y'all! I'm just going to say a quick "hello" tonight and try to catch up on the thread later in the week. I started my first grad school online class last week and we're heading for Florida (Keys, not WDW) next week and I'm trying to get a lot done.

I only ran Monday and Saturday, so I hope to run more this week. And, I'm taking my gear with me on vacation and planning to get some running done down in the heat as well. I figure it will be good practice for next January when I'll have to go from middle-of-winter to heaven-knows-how-hot.

Have a good week everyone!

My training group got together Friday night at Senor Frog's to celebrate this month's birthday babies. We get together the third Friday of each month as an excuse to go have dinner and cocktails. Our motto is "Live to Run, Run to Eat." 22 people in all were able to make the party.

I got in a 8 mile run today (Sunday), from Kapiolani Park, up over Diamond Head, out to Kahala Mall, and then back. The route covers part of the actual Honolulu Marathon.

Trying to figure out my race schedule this year. Possibly the Hilo marathon in March, but I haven't committed myself yet. Another choice could be the Maui Marathon. We'll see.

Have a great week everyone.

Kaley - Good luck with the Minnie decision. Ultimately, it's the long-term that matters! I wish you and my DD could meet - she's 17, plays soccer and lives for marching band. She thinks she wants to do the half next year, but I don't think she'll be able to find time to train. Something to do with band taking a lot of time... :confused3

Angie - I understand the dilemma about running with your friend. I'd run two races with people from my Galloway group and not done my best time because I'd slowed down to stay at their pace, figuring the companionship was worth it. At the half I made a tough decision to leave a fellow WISHer at mile 8 and go on alone, knowing that I'd trained all year for this and wanted to do the best I could. That being said, are you sure you're ready to be shooting for a PR? I'm glad you're able to get out and run again, but I'd hate for you to overdo it and end up hurt and not able to run!

Jackie

Angie - I would encourage you to run your own race. I know how important the Minnie is to you after everything you've been through in the last few months. Run for yourself and have fun!

I've had really rewarding races where I've run with friends and either they slowed down or I did. At the same time, I PR'd a 10K in a big way because I knew my friend was up ahead of me and I wanted to keep up.

I know you've been feeling really down lately. I have to say you have impressed me so much with your strength - from discovering your love of running with your DH, to finishing school, setting a great example for your kids. You are getting back out there again. If it doesn't all come so easily to begin with...you'll get there.

Hello Team :)

Just reporting that I did my first real long run post Goofy on Sunday. I covered 7 miles in 61:09 (8:44 pace) and everything felt just fine.

I hope all is well with everyone!! I'll be back through tomorrow to catch up :)

Dave--ok, I'm going to confess. I'm an idiot. I went to your page to vote for your photos, and I couldn't figure out how to vote. Am I missing something really easy? Don't answer that. :sad2: But seriously, how do I vote??
Good Morning Steve- Here's how I think the voting works. You click on the link below. Login in the upper right hand corner of the site with your Disboards name and password. Click on a photo, and you should see a ranking from 1-10. You're really rating the photo on a scale of 1-10, and that's your vote. Hope that helps...

M.S. Dave - I voted and wasn’t sure can we vote on more than 1? I see you had a family of 4 cheering for you in 2007, I spotted the little guy being carried ;) Nice to see they were/are still enjoying their own Pal :)
Thanks for voting Diane. You can definitely vote for more than 1 photo if you want. Yup, each princess has their own Pal Mickey. We never ended up getting version 2, but they seem to be happy with their version 1s.

DIS UNPLUGGED PODCAST PHOTO CONTEST
Please vote for my Podcast Photo Contest Pics! I'm grovelling for my friends/teammates to check out some of my photos and vote if you like any. Thanks. If you want to vote for a photo, I think you need to log into the photopost site. Click the login link in the upper right hand corner of the blue box.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I just have to comment on how much I've heard the word slackers mentioned on the thread yesterday. Uuummmm, didn't a lot of you run a long race just a weekend ago? I don't think anyone on this team is a slacker at all.

Kaley- It's a tough decision about whether to run the Minnie or not. However, your health definitely should take precidence over a race. There will always be another race, and there's been rumors that Minnie was going to be replaced with a 1/2M. Save yourself for other races you can do with your great Mom. :thumbsup2

Debra- I've had ChiRunning for a while, and I'm just now getting around to reading it. I like reading other running books too. I've read "Duel in the Sun" and "Ultramarathon Man", and both were really motivational reads.

Mel- Mentally I was fine when I switched to running instead of r/w. It was helping that I was running with a group, but I have to say for the most part I didn't even miss the walk breaks. I kind of forgot all about them. However, my hip pain is now reminding me about the walk breaks. Good luck and take it slow and easy.

Keep posting disneyrun/katie- We'd all like to know how your training's going.

Angie- I just wanted to say hello, and we're always here for you. You've ebeen through so much the past year. I'm glad you had a good run in your new shoes.

Hello Cari

Hello Jeff- Your 8 miler sounds great. Picturing you running in Hawaii helps me get through the cold, snowy Rochester winter.

OK, HI to all those I missed out there. Hope you all are doing well.

I know Anne asked about this on the other thread....
but for those of you doing the Philly Distance Run - where are you staying?

We really want to do this race. And I'd like to book a room before they are sold out.
I guess I am just scared away by the hotels I've found charging $30-40+ per day to park!
That's in addition to $200 per night for a room.
(and people say Disney is expensive? :confused3 )
I am thinking being close to the start/finish would be helpful since we will probably be bringing Zack, & someone to watch him, along with us.

Morning folks. I forgot to post that I got my first post-Goofy run in on Saturday. It was a slow 4.19 miles. The temperature wasn't supposed to be too bad, but the wind was wicked! So cold and blowing really hard. I ran with a group and it was great to have the ladies out there for motivation!

Now it really is cold here: -22F. It is supposed to be like this most of the week so needless to say I probably won't be getting much running in.

- what about August for the Chicago Distance Classic?? I take it no one is doing that one in '08??!!

Hey Sandy! DH and I are doing the CDC in Aug and Wendy is coming to town for it too. We just need to recruit a few more WISHers! Anybody? The course is flat and scenic, with the last portion right along the lakeshore. It is a John Bingham event with a generous 4hr time limit.

Nice long workout weekend for me... Finished watching the remaining Amazing Race episodes (love that show!) with DW while on the bike trainer for an hour, estimate 18 miles over 60 min. Then on Sunday went out for a couple hour long run of 12 miles that ended up a little over, avg'd 10:54 and wasn't winded but was quite creaky at the end, I could tell my long run last week was only 7 and so this was quite a jump.

I continue to eyeball all the races I have planned and am trying to prioritize as we figure out what other "real life" priorities are going to be taking up time on some of those weekends, will update soon! I'll also admit that the LA Marathon (where I grew up and the one I always wanted to run) is the same weekend I was going to do back to back halves... And although plane tix are expensive I was going to be running 26 miles anyway so... HMMMM :rolleyes1

Angie--that's a tough question to answer. DH and I have the same issues running together, but thankfully we always do b/c we pull each other through the tough parts. I would talk with your friend and see what her expectations are, and also let her know how you're feeling. And, girly, if you can set a new PR at Minnie this year, after being so super speedy last year, the competitive side in me says "GO FOR IT!!!"

Mel--never mentioned it before, but I'd be interested in a shirt as well

To all our new members--Forgive me for not welcoming you sooner! Can't wait to get to know all of you

To all those who got some miles in this weekend--Kudos to you!:thumbsup2

Okay, gotta get to work (and darn no internet access while I'm there--guess surfing the net while supposedly running a daycare not such a good pair;) ) Have a great Monday all!

Hello All! WOW...this thread is so hard to keep up with. Just wanted to wish everyone well!

DH and I signed up last week for the Minnie, but after my first walk/run since the 5K 2 weeks ago, I'm now feeling back pain and hip flexor pain again...ugh. I really hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew w/ the Minnie 15K... I'm going to the chiro today so hopefully that will help some...

Stacie

Hi Kristi,

I am not officially registered for this race yet (got to let my credit card rest for a few days), but definitely plan on being there. Terri (TEK224) suggested: Embassy Suites at 18th & Ben Franklin or Sheraton (formerly Wyndham) at 17th & Race. Maybe I'd better just bite the bullet and make my reservations and registration tonight! Hope to see you and Chad there!

You guys think you are slackers--I haven't run since before Christmas!!! Oh well, I plan on starting again soon, hopefully tonight, I'm just not sure how much I can still run!

Kaley--Good luck in your decision!! I kind know how you feel, I wanted to run Disney this past year, but I followed my doctor's advice and sat that one out. Yes, it was hard being at the Expo and seeing everyone so excited, buying all the marathon merchandise and carrying around their packets, and it was really hard watching the half from the sidelines and seeing everyone with their medals. But ultimately I knew I made the right decision, there will always be other races to run, but in my case, only 1 baby and in your case, only 2 knees. Good luck!!!

Angie--I am so proud of you, girl!!! I bet you were flying on air! How do you feel today? Is your back okay? Good luck in the decision with your friend. I'm like you, a people pleaser who will make myself miserable just to make the other person not feel bad. But I have to agree with Leana, after all you have been through, Minnie is your victory party, I'm afraid if you decide to run with your friend, you may regret it later and make yourself miserable with what if's. This is a tough one! See, if you were slow like me, it would be a moot point! :)

Pat--I'd love to run CDC this year, but I think I'm going to be a little busy that weekend!

Debra--I really like the book "First Marathons" by Gail Waesche Kislevitz, "Run Fast" by Hal Higdon (it has practical ways we can all increase our speed, so not just for sub 7:00 milers), and "I Run, Therefore I Am Nuts" by Bob Schwartz--that's a really funny book!!! I am a reader too and will read anything I can get my hands on!

Lily--I just got your PM, I will e-mail you the pictures tonight when I get home, they are on our laptop at home.

I know I missed people, but I have work piling up that I have been ignoring. I'll be back later!

Krista

:yay: I just saw all the activity in the PA Marathon thread - and figured the WISHers were heading somewhere new - Glad there'll be some WISHers around - I've talked so often, and so highly of the Team that Fdil talked me into running this Half -

MORE :welcome: to the Newbies -

Im sure there are a lot lurking, and I wanted to WISH them :wizard: and just jump right in!!

I got the 2 miles in yesterday and can I just say :EEEK to Canadian Gal at - 22 F!!! :scared1: We started out outside, but the breeze and snow turned me in to a treadmill - even if it meant listening to a spiel!! (guest of fdil) Apparently she has recruited her Aunts, either that or they want to come watch me make a fool out of myself for the Shamrock Shuffle!! MORE incentive to keep training!
