Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

OK, fair enough, those are all valid reasons to have a second set of medals or to need another medal. I wasn't being open minded enough. Too early I guess. I guess it's also possible that maybe between the marathon and home you somehow lost your medal, and you want another one. I know I would be devastated if I lost my hard earned medal. Although, buying one off of eBay wouldn't be quite the same for me as the one that was draped over my head and is covered with my sweat from the just finished race. Thanks Bill for the other perspective.

I agree that it wouldn't be the same. Hopefully the people buying them have good reasons and not that they want to have something they didn't earn. I have a feeling that if a hurricane is threatening our house again, all the medals will be some of the first things packed. Then the kids and dog can get in the car if there is room (;) just kidding honey) .

Bill

Good Morning team.

Thank you all for the congrats on hitting the gym, I am totally NOT a morning person but figure this way there is no way to make excuses all day on why I can't stop at the gym.

Carrie.....sorry for the confusion I am Kim.....hockeychic.....:lmao:

Blueroses, wow 11 miles that is awesome.

I can not believe someone would sell their medal!!! and all those people who had to leave without theirs...wow that is terrible. I have no intension of ever even letting someone else put it around their necks never mind selling it.

I have a quick training question, I am currently working on the 15K for the Minnie but I can't find a training program for 15 K, lots for 10K 1/2 and full but no 15K, any advise on a training schedule. Currently I am either walking or biking every day but want a more scheduled schedule....does that make sense....lol

Time for work, have a great day all.

Kim

I would either take the 10k and add about 3 weeks to it and increase the mileage up closer to 9 miles or take the half training plan and take out a couple of the longer runs. The half plan may get you more prepared but it could also take longer.

I just modified a Walk 1/2 MFM plan for myself for the Minnie, mainly I lowered the long walk mileage to account for the lesser distance of the 15K. The other walks I kept pretty much the same. HTH!

If you go to runnersworld.com they have this thing called smart coach that helps with a training program. I am using it for the 1/2 I have planned in April. I like it because it gives me the paces I should be running at to achieve a specific finishing time.

Hello all! I'm still suffering from post-half-lack-of-motivation. I did go out and run 3.1 on hills yesterday. I've really got to find a race to sign up for to get me going again before I lose all that training I did. The question is, what length? 5K and go for a good time? 10K? Another half? What is everyone else doing this spring?

Here is a 15K program by Hal Higdon that doesn't look too overwhelming (some of his training programs are crazy!!) HTH! http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/15Knovsch.htm

Good morning all! Hope everyone's week is going well. I just spilled my coffee on my keyboard, so part of it is sticky and I'm trying to avoid using a few letters that are really sticky, so if I misspell somthing, it's on purpose. :)

Kim and Laurie--ok, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused. When you guys first started posting quite a bit, I actually thought it was the same person and I was a little concerned that I was losing my mind (ok, no comments from Krista here!).

Erica--wow, nice job on the miles so far this week! Is that a typical training week for you? I'm impressed!

Dave--WTG on the good run. Isn't it great when a really good run can change the tone of your whole day?

Stephanie--that's a great quote. I'm always a sucker for inspirational running quotes.

blueroses--11 miles! :scared1: Wow, you're not kidding around, are you? Nice job! Funny the things you find out about hydration, etc, during a long run, huh? The even funnier part is if you try to bring up that topic in a conversation with a non-running friend. Amazingly, they don't seem to care near as much as they should. :confused3

Kim--that's a good question about the 15K training program. I have no answers, but you've inspired me to do a google search and see what comes up. Maybe someone else here will have a good training plan, since so many did Minnie last year.

Yeah, the medals on Ebay are crazy. I actually saw someone selling their Donald, Mickey and Goofy medal last year in one set. Their comments said they were selling them to offset the price of the races. :sad2: Wow, I couldn't bring myself to do that. Even with the shadowboxes that you can buy that come with their own set of medals--it just wouldn't mean as much to me. Krista and I plan to make a shadowbox for our medals, but we're going to put the ACTUAL medals that were placed around our necks in there.
I'm with you, Bill. If the house was on fire, the medals would be one of the first things to grab (Krista, that IS after you and I were out safely, sweetie! But if you're dilly-dallying around on the way out of the house, it's the medals first and you're on your own. ;) )

Training's going well. I have 4 miles to do tonight. I'm trying to get in at least 2 or 3 cross-training sessions a week to work on biking and swimming, and that seems to be working so far.

Have a great Thursday, everyone!

Steve

Maggie - I'm hoping to run at least part of the half. Right now I'm doing 2R/2W intervals during 3 mile runs, so I'm reasonably sure I should be able to improve on that within the year! But there will definitely be walking involved.
Jackie

I guess that I will have to start walking faster then!

Anyone else planning on walking the half next year? I know Erica is, but you are way too speedy for me! I am thinking my goal will be in the 14-15min/mile range at that point. We'll see...

Maggie

Cecliia- I think of that often. We finished so close together. I wish I would have known where you were. You must have been really close to Steve who finished in 4:59. You couldn't have missed me in my WISH shirt.

Next year I am gonna hunt you down. I am not running the whole thing alone again!

Cruella de mom/Cecilia,[/B] Soooo WISH we could have met you at WDW!! :)

I wish I could have met everyone also. However, I don't think anyone wanted to catch my tummy bug. I just have one request - next year have everyone put their board name on the back of their shirts. I know I met a few people but it was too quick for me to put names with faces with their Wish names. I am TERRIBLE with names!

Dena - Your plan looks good. Just remember to expect the unexpected. Babies are notorious for wrecking the best of plans. dd#1 had colic and ds (#3) had RSV and spent 16 days in the hospital TWICE. Moms can't leve babies in the hospital...

Also, its HOT in NE Fla from April through Oct and babies can't handle that kind of heat. After my first (I lived in Jax) I had to run before Dh went to work or it wasn't going to happen.

But quick note: When its time to run the Gate River Run, give me a whistle and I will come run it with you. I was hoping to one day run that race when I found out I was pregnant with my first child.

Erica - Wow, you are already putting in some BIG miles! My coaches have me tapering up from almost nothing. This week my LR is 8 with a weekly total of not more than 20. Next week LR is 10 and weekly mileage is not more than 24. You must be in fantastic shape to be able to jump back into that kind of mileage so quickly!

As for the EBay medals - alot of the TNT and other charity runners give their medals to their honored hero and they might want a second for themsleves or if they have two heros. As I told my kids, if I keep the medal then I didn't really run the race for Pop did I? (But dh bought me a bronze plaque thingy that comes with a second medal :) )

For our runners just starting out - A base should be "steps" (running, walking or both) 3 times a week minimum. Rest days are very important so don't try to over do it. Don't expect the runs to get easier until you add a mile - in other words - a 3 mile run will always be a little hard until you have run a couple 4 or 5 mile runs. Then a 3 mile run will be "just 3" and it will be fun. When the words "just 10" come out of your mouth you will literally stop in your tracks in amazement!

Scott- I am so unorganized that I never respond to everyone. I use the multi quote thing to remember things I want to respond to but even then its hard to keep up.

Cecilia

Wow you guys are amazing, I ask a question, leave for work and so many responses....Bill, Stacey, Scott, Krista and Steve thank you so much for the info. I will get a program set out.

Maggie: I will probably walk a good portion of it, I don't know for sure if I am doing the full or the 1/2 but I want to be able to jog some as well.

Can I ask another question, as I get past the starting stage and getting serious I am concerned about food what type and when to eat it. Please keep in mind I am also trying to lose weight but don't want to cut back so far that it hinders my progress in training. Do you eat before a work out? What kind of foods.....i am so confused....there is so much info out there but fiqured i would ask those who live it.

Thanks

kim

Kim--The whole food thing is definitely live and learn. What works for one person, will make another person sick. Personally, what I do is eat a bagel (or approx. 200 calories) about an hour before my long run, and then right before I leave the house, I have a banana. If my run is longer than an hour, I eat half of a Clif bar (approx. 100 calories) every 4 miles and I drink a mix of half water/half Gatorade (if you drink straight Gatorade, then alternate drinking water and Gatorade). Usually one 16 oz bottle lasts me 6 miles. For my shorter runs during the week, I eat about 100 calories before I leave work and run right when I get home. My weekly runs are no longer than an hour, so I just drink water and don't worry about eating as I run.

After a long run, you will need protein--the quicker you get the protein, the faster your muscles can rebuild themselves. I usually drink a Slim Fast which has 10g of protein (I drank one this morning and it's in my garbage can, that's how I know that :) ), chocolate milk works too and eggs are a great source of protein. Shorter runs, I just eat my regular dinner which is usually a meat and a vegetable.

For general nutrition, you want lots of whole grain carbohydrates, lots of fruits and veggies (the darker the color, the better) and lean meat. Try to stay away from junk food and unnecessary sugar, which is HARD!!! :)

I hope this helps!!!

While I didn't ask this question, thanks for explaining this so clearly. My general nutrition is fine, but I was very confused as how to eat before, during, and after workouts. I know others do things differently, but your plan sounds like what would work for me.

Those gu and gels make my stomach turn just hearing about them. I don't like the taste of sugary things.

Maggie
(trying to keep up on the posts) :goodvibes

Thank you Krista, I am trying to set out a full plan and this definately helps, and shopping day is tomorrow so I can fill up on all the stuff I need.

I was looking at some 15K plans.....yes I should be working:ssst: And I have one I think will work for me but it uses terms I am not sure of what exactly is Tempo Run, and for speed work it says "dis 5mi, inc warm: 2x1600 @14:30 w/800 jogs;cool.....yikes......:headache:

Hey Maggie we can learn together, these people are amazing.

Thanks Kim

You went to smart coach I see. A Tempo run will be a run that is faster then your race pace. For example my 1/2 pace is around 9:12 hopefully. So my tempo runs range from 8:57 to 8:46.

For the speed work stuff "dis 5mi, inc warm: 2x1600 @14:30 w/800 jogs" would break down like this.

1 mile warm up
1600 or 1 mile @ 14:30 pace
800 or 1/2 mile jog not sure what the pace would be
1600 or 1 mile @ 14:30 pace
800 or 1/2 mile jog
1 mile cool down

Hope that helps.:thumbsup2

WOW! Lots to catch up with and little time. Here’s my best shot!

blueroses – how are you feeling after your 11 miles yesterday?

Maggie – what an awesome word to think of! Awesome friends gave me a beautiful bangle bracelet they had made for me for the marathon weekend that says “WISHes will come true.” I wear it all the time – it brings me peace and certainty in the magic we can make. I am glad you are already finding out that WISH holds so many positive implications. This team will motivate you when necessary, inspire you when you are down, celebrate with you when you are up, and it will be a constant beacon of hope and inspiration and friendship and support.

Mel – great job getting on the TM! How did you entertain yourself on the TM for 50 minutes?

Dena – sorry I have nothing to add to the whole heart monitor thing. I spent much of 10 years monitoring or being monitored, so I avoid the things like the dickens. That being said, I’m not sure how much faith to put into them. My heart rate immediately jumps to about 155 (not good) and has often shut down the elliptical machine, but I feel perfectly fine to jog even when it goes up to about 163. I guess they provide very useful information, but I just don’t really “get” how to interpret it.

Jen – congrats on signing up for the Green Bay ½! We’ll be with you in spirit, even if you don’t see any other WISH shirts there! What is the date?

Wow, Erica, that is a lot of miles. Add me to the slacker list! ;)

Helen – how fun! Congrats on your win!

Hey, I forgot to tell you guys, but here is a cross-post from my journal about my lucky night Saturday night:

keenercam said:
Last night was Family Bunco night at DS13's school and since it is his last and DH is the president of the Dads' organization that co-sponsored it, DH, DS and I all went. DS and I attended Mass while DH helped last minute set-up, then we all had dinner. I forewent pizza altogether and just had a small caesar salad. I drank water most of the night instead of soda too. They did about 20 door prizes all night and I won 2 of them -- a $50 GC to Red Lobster and a $10 GC to Starbucks. Then we won the 50/50! I was almost embarassed going up for the 3rd time with a winning ticket and it was $216!! How fun! It was nice to give DD an extar $50 today for spending money at school and DS got a new PSP game. I was worried last night that people would be resentful but we got the nicest congratulations comments, saying we do so much for the school, that it couldn't have happened to a more deserving family, etc. The nice recognition compliments made me feel richer than Midas and were definitely more valuable than the prizes.

Matt – that listing makes me so sad. That someone really didn’t value the physical representation of a great accomplishment is just UGH! I do appreciate hearing the other possible explanations for why people buy or sell, though.

Dave – sorry about your stressful day at work. I’m glad you found a physical outlet, but don’t overdo it!

I am going to the gym tonight and doing another 3.1 miles. I am just focusing on the 5Ks for now and working on pace. If there is any way in the world that I can get fast enough to finish a 5K under 40 minutes, I MIGHT be able to start thinking of myself as a runner. How amazing that would be!

Thanks Scott, that helps. I have been to many sites this morning....just don't tell the boss.....:lmao:

Ok now back to work!!!!

Kim

This is the plan I followed last year for the Minnie. I liked it alot.

Then I read John Bingham's books and loved him. I didn't end up loving his training plans though. (I know I am in the minority here) So, I am going back to Hal's plans again.

Greetings Team - :)

This morning I did 3 miles on the TM @ 3.9 @ 1%. Next week I start training for the Minnie and I really want to focus on increasing my speed. I wish it wasn't so darn cold here. :cold: I just know my LRs are going to be on the TM and I hate that. No matter what movie I'm watching!

Oh Helen! I'm so glad you're coming next year! :cheer2:

Jackie - Oh OK, because I was wondering....:rolleyes1 Tonight I am going to some little town by Atlantic City with a friend to see a play and we are staying over at a Holiday Inn so I'll be using their gym tomorrow. For the first time ever in my life I had to check to see if a hotel had a gym. Can you imagine? Me doing that? Ha! ;)

Matt - That is so incredibly low. I would never, ever do that.:sad2:

Kim - Geez, maybe we can call you KimChic? :rotfl: Ha ha! I am the same way about my bling. When I was wearing it and people wanted to look at it and they went to touch it I was like "Ahh! No touching the bling!" They don't get it, but too bad. I worked too hard - and got up too many very early mornings - for that medal. It's mine I tell you! Mine! Mine! MINE! :yay:

Steve - OMG! You're too funny! :lmao: I am laughing over the coffee incident because I have done that myself.

I wimped out last night and didn't go to the gym. I was so tired when I got home from work that I just went straight to bed!

Question: Do you count your cross-training miles as miles for the week? For example, if I did three 2-mile walks and then one 2-mile bout on the elliptical, would my total miles be 8 for the week, or still just 6?

I know it doesn't really make that much of a difference, but I'm a data geek, so I like to track these things. :)
