Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

...Does anybody remember who posted about a program called Couch to 5k in Two Months? Anyway - a big thanks to whoever it was! What a great way to build back your base. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to get back in running shape.
Susan
I am glad to know that this program does work. I just recommended it to someone yesterday.

Krista - no freaking out! We all joke about the kiddos and how hard it is. But none of us are wanting to return them! ;) Seriously, it's one of the best things we did.

Besides, I am trying to talk Chad out of #2, so I can live vicariously through you guys! :rotfl:

Krista - related to bree freaking you out w/ the baby stuff: This is why we haven't had another one (as far as the part that is up to us) I felt like i didn't have much freedom when the boy was little and then when he was old enough to drag along in whichever manner i saw fit (bike trailer, jogger and eventually kayak!) I always felt guilty that it might be boring for him. Now instead of towing, pushing and paddling (in a boat, i mean) I just work out when he is in preschool. I cannot imagine starting again w/ another.

On an encouraging note, i wasn't that physically active until just before i got pregnant (attn reader: don't make any jokes about that statement just keep your thoughts to yourself!) I had just started bike riding about 3 months b/4 I got pregnant. Most of my athletic pursuits have come after the boy was born. (we did backpack and canoe a little b/4, but that was pretty much it!) I did ride a stationary bike through most of the pregnancy and then when i got too big, i did water aerobics. (my swimsuit got stretchmarks!) I actually think it was easier to work out w/ baby in than it was w/ baby out!
I actually think it was easier to work out w/ baby in than it was w/ baby out!
Pretty much everything is easier with the the baby in rather than out! :rotfl: Although I did manage to convince myself otherwise, 1 week overdue...Boy, was I in for a rude awakening every 3 hours! :goodvibes

Still, I wouldn't trade him (ds9)...but I'm nevertheless glad his days of total dependency are over.

I don't want to be a downer on everyone making great commitments for the mickey or goofy, but I'm worried that some of you aren't respecting the distance as Bingham says. Last year, I sat here and watched as everyone started out so eagerly, but like Carrie said I'm concerned some of our teammates aren't remembering how important it is to build up the strong base first. I just don't want you guys to end up injured and have to miss your race. I now know how tough it is watching everyone you trained with through the year get their medals while you have to sit on the sidelines. IT SUCKS! Just a thought for all of you struggling with which race to choose, especially the newbies. I feel like everyone is being so supportive and encouraging, but no one is reminding everyone how important it is to take it slow so you can get to the starting line injury free! I love you guys and don't want you to be disappointed come race day.

Carrie and Dena, Thanks for saying this. Last year I started posting on the boards. My history of walking was sporadic, but I could walk 3 miles fairly easily. I was 33 and about 10lbs over weight. I was so eager to train. I increased my speed too fast, didn't stretch properly, and decided to add running intervals. Why? because I wasn't kowledgable enough. I did have mfm, but I just didn't respect the distance. Then I injured my hip (piriformis). I am still struggling with this injury a year later, even though it has improved quite a bit.

I am only speaking for myself and would never attest to what others should do or are capable of. But, I thought I would share just in case it helps someone who was where I was last year.

5 pages caught up on 8 more to go...

I know that is not

I'm beginning to feel like I'll be all alone in the half... except for the hordes of people doing the GOOFY! I'm going to be perfectly content with a Donald medal in '08. At least I know I'll have DD with me, since I'll be paying for her registration - no chance that she'll have a change of mind at the last minute and switch to the full...

Jackie

I am pretty sure I will be able to swing the scheduling to make the half. Are you walking or running?

Maggie

Anne, Carrie, Bree, Krista- Thank you soooo much for your opinions. I was scared I was just having a moment of weakness. It's so tough giving up 2 years of WDW marathons for one pregnancy. Ugh!!! But I really appreciate your feedback. Now taking down my Donald '08 clippie...ohhhhh that's gonna be hard! :sad2:

Okay guys, I have to ask, what's up with the spinning red heart in your siggys? Did you guys form a WISH sub-cult? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Or is it another WISH accessory we have to pay for? :lmao: :lmao:

:lmao: :lmao: I know someone asked once, but I forgot who so never answered. It's one of the "you've been ____ed" things like went around for X-mas and t-giving. I think I was one of the first ones here to get it, as I got it from a scrapper. This one is You've been Swaked! lol. I *think* that's supposed to be a good thing.

Dena--I'm agreeing with Carrie and Bree, I think you are doing the right thing by waiting until 2009 for the 1/2. And your plans looks smart and attainable. I don't have kids, but I can imagine getting your body back is not going to be easy and it will probably take some time to ease into exercising again. Not to mention you'll have a newborn and a little girl to take care of, I think you'll be exhausted!! Slow, steady, injury-free and comfortable is DEFINITELY the best way to go. By the way, your daughter in beautiful!

Bree--You are really freaking me out with this post baby talk!!

Krista - Don't be freaked out! Everyone is different. I am not saying it is as easy as pie...mmmmm, pie.......but very doable.
With DD8, I WO the whole time even though I was VERY sick. Step, TM, Weights, ect. This helped me and Iwas able to bounce back really quick. The week after, I was back to working out.
With DD6, I wasn't as sick, but had another baby to take care of so my WOs consisted of eating Rocky Road Ice Cream.popcorn:: It was harder to bounce back this time (this was actually my 3rd preg..I miscarried at 16 weeks the 1stX I got preg.)
I also had very short, labor.....
Anyway...don't get freaked out too bad.
Dena, I do think it is wise to take it slow though. Your plan looks great.

Well there goes my WO!
I just left work and picked DD6 up from school. She is sick. So I am forced to be at home and I have to clean it b/c I cannot stand the mess.:scared:

DUDE! Wait until they are in school and you have to do homework with them. My girls have so much HW and they are only in 1st and 3rd grade.:scared1: And YES it is better when they cannot talk...OOOOHHH they can be sassy princess: princess: !

Wait until they are 16 and you have to fight them off of the computer so that you can keep up with the WISH team!:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Do you think I can consider the "fight" cross training?

Maggie
only 3 more pages to read before I get caught up. Oh who am I kidding, by the time I post this at least 2 more pages will be added! :rotfl2:

Hey all! Anybody read "Ultra Marathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner" by Dean Karnazes??? Well, I got it at the library today,a nd so far it's very interesting. But there is a section I read this afternoon that made me think of all my WISH buddies

" 'Go out there and run to the best of your ability,' he replied. 'Don't run with your legs. Run with your heart.'
On some level, even as a high school freshman, I got his meaning: the human body has limitations; the human spirit is boundless. I didn't need a wristwatch to set the pace; I needed to run with my heart."

Hi everyone! Today I went out for a 3.5 mile run. It took me 33:53 min, and I was running at a 9:38 pace. It wasn't so cold today, but we are supposed to get some very cold temps the next few days, so I am worried about getting out for my run....I will have to bundle up and get out there!!!

John-I see that you are from Jackson, NJ, I am from northern NJ....my sister lives in Jackson, so I spend a lot of time there. Are you planning on doing any races in that area throughout the year? I am going to sign up for the Spring Lake 5 mile on Memorial Day weekend, and I am doing the Long Branch 1/2 marathon on April 29th.

Kim-way to go getting up at 5:30am to go to the gym....I wish I could do that. I am a morning person, but not that early!!!

Cam-way to go on your training session! you are doing a great job!!

Welcome to all the new WISH members!!

gotta catch up on the rest of the posts!!!

Laurie

Well I guess my muscles loosened up, because I ended up doing over 11 miles today. Now don't get too excited - it wasn't all running. There's a 2.8 mile jogging trail at the park I went to today. I did a walk/run lap to warm up, followed by a run/walk, a run (jog really, it was slow), and a walk to cool down. Think I'm going to be paying for my enthusiasm tomorrow?!! :scared1: The sun was out. This time last year, Seattle was in the middle of 30 straight days of rain. It was just so nice to be outside.
And I gained some very important knowledge. By the time my workout was over, I had just about tapped out my hydration belt. This means in warm weather I definitely can't carry enough water in there to meet my needs on a long run. It's good to know this now instead of finding out during a run.
Cheers, everyone.

Hi Team,

I finally am caught up with the posts! It only took me 3 different times today. At least I beat my dd16 to the computer tonight! Now stop posting or I will have nightmares of trying to catch up again!:lmao:

Anyway, I did get in 1 mile walking at a 15.08min, then did 1 hr of yoga. Great class! I have to share that during meditation, teacher says think of one word that inspires you. I thought WISH ofcourse!:goodvibes :thumbsup2

Have a great night everyone! It's time to get ds2 and ds4 ready for bed.
Maggie

Cold and rainy here today. I stayed inside and did 50 min on the TM for a total of 3.78 miles. I'm working on upping the pace, slowly but surely. I can do more than 4 miles in 50 min when I run outside. I'm trying to do more of my SR outside because I'm afraid the TM is keeping me slow.

blue...doesn't matter if you weren't running, 11 miles is 11 miles. Congrats! :cool1:

Laurie...great pace!

Stephanie...that's a great quote!

Maggie...living with teenagers is definitely cross-training.

Krista...Christa's right, everyone's different and every pregnancy is different. I'm not particularly good at it...I was nauseated for 6 months both times. But with DD14 (seems like a lifetime ago), I was more active. I played volleyball up until the end of my 7th month. With DD3, I had a more sedentary job and lifestyle (and I was 10 years older  ). Someone else said it's easier before they're born...absolutely! Much more portable and don't require diaperbags, car seats, strollers, baby carriers, etc when they're inside ;)

Jackie...I felt like that last year when I signed up for the half...seems like everyone else signed up for the full. But there will be lots of Goofy folks and new folks that join us for you to hangout with. And there will be plenty of us along the course to cheer during the half!

Jen...yay!!!! If you want, I can give you a medical excuse for work so that you can do the full ;) I'm going to have to get a lot faster to keep up with Kristi!

BTW, amazon has great prices on the Garmin 205 and 305 right now. Is that a reasonable Valentine's Day gift?

I haven't read this book but I did read his journal from doing 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days and then his run across the country afterwards. He definately has some interesting perspectives on running and life. From what it seems though, he has his priorities right and running just seems to fall into place.

OK, team....Gotta an observation for you.

1998 was the Inaugural WDW Half Marathon. A friend did the 1/2 in 2002 and has a medal with "Fifth Anniversary" on it.

Say you got married in 1998. Your Fifth Anniversary would be 2003, right?

2002 would have been the Fifth time the half marathon was run...

So, if there was a Fifth Anniversary medal in 2002, did we get robbed in 2007?

Does this mean there will be a 10th anniversary medal in 2008?:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Hi Everyone -- Just a quick post (tried to post this morning --but it got lost in cyber world).

Works been a little hectic, so I still haven't done much since Saturday's personal training session -- I do plan on booking more, work more on strength training for now and let myself heal.

I hope everyone is doing well -- One day this week, I hope to read through the thread for this week.

Tomorrow, I also hope to get to the fitness center.

Talk to everyone real soon!

Jodi

On an encouraging note, i wasn't that physically active until just before i got pregnant

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: THAT WAS SOOO FUNNY!!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I was in a sports store the other day and saw a Sportline 910 Heart Rate Monitor that is just like a watch- with no chest strap. Anyone have any experience with such a contraption? I don't think I'd like one with a chest strap, but I don't want to buy something doesn't work. Just wondering...

Dena - I've seen the mio's w/o the chest strap and the high gear w/o chest strap. I think they are generally less accurate and you have to put your fingers on a sensor to get a reading. That way it can't keep track of how much time you spend in each zone. If you are worried about the chest strap and comfort w/ your (sorry to bring it up again) sports bra, they make sports bras w/ an area to hold the strap.
