Wk of Feb 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning everyone. I would have posted a race( training run) report last night, but I was busy reading and catching up on all of the posts!! I took my laptop, but we just didn't have the time. We stayed with EC's exchange daughter at a small christian college in dallas (it was really funny b/c i figured i'd take my laptop b/c i wouldn't have access to a computer. I walked in the door to their dorm/apt and there were 4 laptops sitting on their coffee table!! Wow times have changed!)

I don't really have much exciting to tell. I tried to find someone to talk to me during the race. i had conversations here and there but never did really find anyone. it was much less crowded than disney, so after about mile 10 it really started to thin out and there were really very few people. I ran w/ a couple of team in training guys for about 4 or 5 miles. One was in his 50's and had done one fewer marathons than his current age. the other was doing a long leg of the relay (i think he was doing around 9 miles) They were doing 7/1 intervals and they were really too fast for me, so i dropped back after a few miles! I then found 3 guys who were doing their 1st marathon (i didn't have the heart to tell them this was a training run :rotfl2: ) They told me they were trying to do a 10:00min mile, so i let them go. This was well after the 1/2 way point and up until then i was averging 10:15mpm (GUESS WHO STARTED OUT TOO FAST!!!) I tried to run just under my comfort level, but at about mile 17 I was getting pretty lonely and mad (I though about sunny!!! The police were directing traffic and it seemed that usually they would let one car go b/4 i would make it to an intersection. I was fantisizing about running a car down. I though sunny would be proud as she tried to take out a few dis park visitors and strollers.) By then I had decided I liked the w/r intervals but not as fast of a run as my 7/1 TNT buddies were doing, so i walked the mile markers or aid stations.(the 50 something TNT guy had done goofy too and our times were about 4 minutes apart, as were our finish times on this one!) By then I passed the 10:00 mpm boys (they were dropping of fast.) One quit w/ a cramp, one started walking and singing at the top of his lungs to his walkman and the other kept running but really slowed down such that we had passed each other several times during the interval changes. At 23, I decided to run it in, except a small quick walk at 24 to eat and drink and I finished pretty strong. I passed several people at the very finish and sprinted in to finish. My pace at the end was faster than the pace at mile 17-21 but it wasn't nearly as fast as my starting mile pace! My avg. pace ended up being 10:54 w/ a finish time of 4:45 which was 20 minutes faster than disney! I forgot to mention that it was cold and rained for at least 1/2 the race. I ran in my rain coat for a significant part of it!!!!I'm not very sore. We went for sushi after (i like amy's theory but my sushi is always post long run - it gives me something to look forward to and i don't really want sushi to "produce faster runs" :rotfl: that was a really bad potty joke!!)

I still have some muscle soreness today but nothing that would impair my function! They had great post race food and good freebies. I had a great time. They are having trouble posting the results b/c the timing chips were actually on the back of the race # and they got wet. Somehow the results got pretty messed up!! Also, with the chip they used, chip time was the same as clock time (so you have to wonder why they even messed w/ it!)

So basically, the bottom line was, I couldn't find anyone to keep me company, but you guys kept me company in my heart, bc i kept thinking about things you had shared or things i wanted to tell you when i got back!! I also hoped to see EC and her exchange daughter on some of the out and back sections, but i wasn't really even close to them. they finished in 4:11!!! Of course, that was a slow training run for ec, she actually met me at the finish to sprint it in w/ me!

Christa - at one point i was running w/ a really young girl who was way too fast for me. Anyway, everyone kept saying "go frog" I though it must have been her nickname or something :confused3 :teeth: I guess you cleared that one up for me. (I am totally sports/college team illiterate!!!)

MDM - So terribly sorry to hear about your mom's dx. Loads of :wizard: and prayers going out to you.

MelR - Congrats on your "training run."

Lily - It would be great if you could get there for the Minnie.

TiffJ - I have an AAA reservation at the Candy Cane Inn for 4 nights that I will definitely be cancelling. Well, that is if I "really" have one. Now you have me wondering...

Mel - The pics of your girls was just darling!!

Today is the first day of my training schedule for the Minnie. 3 miles this morning. I am hoping it will snap me out of my running funk : :confused3

Best of luck to everyone on a successful week of meeting goals.

Kevin - I loved your race report!!! Thank you so much for posting!!!!

Christa - Hey, I just realized I'm mad at you for not telling me that Ft. Worth is HILLY!!!!!!! Actually, I do much bigger hills here, just not on that long of runs and someone had told me the cowtown course was flat and fast - NOT TRUE!!

MDM -- Sending a  I hope you find that the time you spend training is peaceful and therapeutic for you. I truly understand what you are going through and hope your Mother is comfortable and surrounded by loved ones.

Good morning all. Ugh. Monday morning. :headache:

Yesterday I did my LW, one hour at 3.5 This morning I did just 45 min @ 3.7 @ 1% and it was hard. I started reading MFM and snuck a look at his training scheduled for walking the Half. He has your LW day as Sat with Sun a rest day. I'm starting to understand that, but Sat is always such a busy day for us, with chores and errands and such. Sunday morning DH goes to karate class so it's a good day for me to do my LW. Well, I guess I'll keep things as they are for now. :confused3

I'm trying not to panic here, but my in-laws are taking us to Italy in July. It was supposed to be for a week, and I thought we were staying at a hotel in Florence. Well, I just found out this weekend (My MIL kept her plans hidden as if it was a military secret, but that's a whole 'nother post!) that it's for ten days and we are staying at a villa. My first reaction (you all would be so proud of me) was "How am I supposed to walk???" No treadmill of course, and I am not about to go walking off down the road, so I told DH he's just going to have to get up early and go with me. No problem for him to get up but he usually runs. Well, if I have to spend ten days with his mother, he has to get up and walk with me. I wonder how my Garmin will work over there. But I can not not walk for ten days in July. OMG no! :scared:

Krista - I love your pics! It looks like such a nice neighborhood you live in. Thanks for sharing and keep 'em coming! :)

Mel - Those room rates don't seem like any great shakes. Is anyone interested in them? I haven't decided what we are doing yet. :scratchin

Lily - Oh that's great news! I can't wait to meet you in January! Look for me, I'll be the oldest! :crazy2:

Mel - Are those your girls with the frog? They are both cute but the young lady on the right is stunning! :goodvibes

lilouisianagal - Welcome! You're funny! "thats the state not the city" :lmao:

Cam - Thanks for asking about Mist. She's doing a little better every day but my hopes for riding her are diminishing. She may have been thru too much. I don't know, we'll just have to see. Hey I was thinknig about the DL half in '07. Are you planning on it? I've already warned my DH about 1) the "Taper" before the WDW Half. I told him it might get ugly the last two weeks of Dec. He said "What about Christmas??" I have to be honest - I said "I've got to focus!". And I also told him about "Post Half Depression", the "What next???" period. I told him I'll have to have something else to look forward to. He agreed. Just another reason why I love this man! So I'm thinking DL Half in "07. BTW, thank you for the "Oil of Olay" comments. Coincidentally, I use it. So, hey, maybe it works! Just don't look too close!

Helen - I never realized you are on the other side of the planet! Wow! Cool! :cool2: Maybe one of these days we'll all have to come THERE for a Half!

Dave - I think you need a massage. That would help those shins! Hey, couldn't hurt, right?? :goodvibes

Christy - Very good. Post! We love to hear from you. :thumbsup2

Jen - Don't worry about the dopey questions. I am the Queen of Dopey Questions! And welcome! :welcome:

Amy - Let me know about that sushi theory. My DH eats it all the time, so we can test it on him too! :rotfl2:

Kevin - I have printed out your race report so I can sit at my desk with my tea and read it and it will look like I am doing something work related. :coffee: Ha ha ha! I'm terrible! :lmao:

Monte - I do believe house work IS cross-training! Stick around here and you'll be amazed at what qualifies as cross-training! :Pinkbounc

Heather - 21 miles!?!?!?!?! :worship:

MouseDogMom - OMG, no. I'm so sorry. Training is an excellent thing to do now.

Dena - I'm sorry you're not feeling motivated. Where's our "kick some Dean booty" smilie??? Hang around here, you'll find motivation, inspiration, and lots of PD! :wizard:

Mel - Oh Mel! That was terrible! "produce faster runs" :lmao:

OK off to read Kevin's report, I mean, do some actual work. :teeth:

Judy

Hello Mel from Rodgers

Congratulations on another marathon finish. Was 2006 Disney your first full marathon? If it was, making this one your second, can you tell me how the second marathon differed from the first mentally?

Like your result yesterday I'd like to also take about 20 minutes off my Disney Marathon/Goofy Challenge time next year. I assume I'll get most of those minutes just from being a marathoner instead of a Goofy. Anything you can tell me about your mental state through the second marathon, particulary where and how it was better or worse than the first would be helpful.

Thanks

Craig (whose mom was born in Rodgers 71 years and 3 days ago)

Craig - Cool connection w/ Rogers!! I'll bet it looks a little different now than the last time your family was here!! but where doesn't? Disney goofy was my first marathon. Actually, I ran goofy pretty leisurely. I had a great time, but didn't really push, I just enjoyed the course. I ran most of the miles slower than my training pace and pushed some at the end! For disney, I just wanted to get that goofy medal (it just called to me!) This weekend, I ran a little faster than my normal training pace. I did have some more mental challenge to overcome, as i was pushing a little harder and i didn't have anyone to talk to like Sara (msblrobs, who ran w/ me at dis) I think the 20 minutes came from pushing a little harder and from not doing the 1/2 the day b/4. I didn't think the 1/2 on sat had influenced my ability on Sun, but I'm thinking differently now. I am less sore after this weekend than i was from goofy. I actully went into the full at dis w/ some leg soreness. I'll bet you could shave the 20mins off next time. I think not doing the 1/2 the day b/4 should give you some time automatically. You will probably train differently as well, as you will be training for a shorter distance and you can do some speedwork. The other thing that helped with shaving off that time was the course was a TON less crowded. There were some lonely moments on the back stretch, but I was not weaving in and out of so many people and i ran the inside of every curve and kept the course as short as possible this time. I'm pretty convinced that disney marathon is not the best one to run for time as it is soooo crowded and it basically insures that you are going to do more than 26.2 miles weaving and get stuck behind people. Of course, the flat part of disney makes up for some of that.

As far as mental state, this one was harder and I struggeld from about mile 17 to 22 w/ just feeling tired and slow. I really never push to total fatigue, b/c that is just not the way I run. I didn't hit the wall in disney and I think I felt a little of that here, but it was still totally doable and I'm already itchin to do something aerobic today. I bet this week is going to be an off week though, b/c I have boy today and a big dental ordeal tomorrow :confused3

I am going to run another 26.2 mile training run on march 25 or 26 (i can't remember which). it is a big 1/2 as it is part of ark runner race series for points, but the full has very few participants. It is incredibly hilly and is actually ranked as the 7th hardest boston qualifier marathon in the us. I'm sure my time is going to stink it up, but i'm using it as training for a 50 mile trail run in april. I think i have talked my husband into running it w/ me for talk time!

good luck w/ your continued training. i'm sure you will be able to meet your 20 minute goal!!

Melissa: :woohoo: Sounds like your run went well all things considered! I'm soooo impressed....can't imagine keeping that pace up for a marathon! You rock girl! :thumbsup2

Judy: I'm with you....it would be nice to do my LR on Saturday with a rest day on Sunday. BUT....Saturdays are sooo tough! I'll have to see how things play out once I get into the training schedule. Right now Sunday works out so much better for me. I may have to tweak my MFM schedule....even though he says not to :worried: .

Dena: Hang in there! I know you can do it! :goodvibes

I did my XT today. 60 minute cardio kickboxing class. It was a great class...but I wish we did more strength training. It was heavy cardio today....the good news is my HR seemed better than ever even during the high intensity portions of the workout AND I only had to bring it down a level once.

Now I have a training question for you experts :teeth: . Here's the deal, my running courses are all hilly. Lots of ups and downs with very few flats. Today somebody told me that I'm not really accomplishing anything with all the down-hills during my run. Do you guys think that's the case? Since I'm essentially running a loop around my neighborhood it stands to reason that all the downhills have to be counter balanced with equal distance in uphill. It's just that the ups at times are more of a slow and steady climb as opposed to a steep hill (although I have a few of those here as well). The downhills do feel soooo easy to me, so maybe they aren't helpful in my training. Not that there's much I can do about it. But I thought I'd get your input! THanks!

Amy, I'm no expert, but that person is whacked!!!! I have never felt that I got as much out of a downhill, as I put in to the uphill. With that theory, a person could run up a and down a hill forever and just keep gaining energy. Uh-uh. Not following that logic.

Perhapsthe gals that run the famous BFH that was pictured could tell us mor on that theory. ;)

Judy-- I did MFM for the 2006 marathon (and will likely modify it for the 2007 as well) and I had the same problem-- Saturday's were just too busy. If Sunday works best for you and your schedule otherwise permits, just slide everything forward a day to allow you to run long on Sunday (so Saturday and Monday would be rest days, if I recall correctly). I actually slide everything back a day to run long on Friday with no ill effects.

AmyBeth-- As far as I'm concerned, the downhills are doing something for you. Just like when you run uphill, running downhill requires your legs to work a different way (specifically you essentially "stop" yourself with every step to slow you down to stay on pace.) During the race, my uphills and downhills felt almost equally difficult at some points. That said, I would make sure you reverse your route every now and then to get in those hills running the other way. (Hey, you like a challenge, right??) ;)

:scared: I was afraid somebody was going to say that. :rotfl: I actually did reverse one of my courses last week and did THE BFH. And I was RFT (really freakin' tired) by the time I got to the top LOL. I was running the hill, however, I probably could have walked it faster LOL! But I agree....I do have to reverse my course every now and then....the killer uphill will be tough BUT then it's pretty much downhill sailing from there until I reach it again. The reverse (which is my typical course run) is actually a lot of shorter upgrades and mini-hills that lead to the big bad downhill. I feel like I've hit the lottery when I get to it. PHEW! :scratchin I'll reverse it for my run tomorrow and let you all know how I fare! If you don't hear from me send a search party!

RFT! :rotfl:

I've got some pics from the marathon that resemble that remark.

Amy

I'll be delicate:

The person who told you running on hills wasn't beneficial is a total dope. He or she got it 100%, completely, totally, absolutely wrong. Sorry but I cannot be tactful here, this was a stupid and uninformed comment  . I give you permission to completely ignore the source.

The bigger worry when training is running on flats all the time. This leads to a very false sense of security, strength, and fitness. Anyone who has trained exclusively on flats and then run a race through hills will tell you the flats did not prepare them well for the hills. Hill running requires quad power and flats are not enough.

Hill running builds strength. Up hills builds power in the calfs and quads and you push off and drive up the hills. Down hill stretches also build your quads in a different way, as you must hold yourself back a bit otherwise you'll end up running too quickly. Elite distance runners like to live and train in places like Boulder, Colorado, because they can vary their training, flats, long gentle hills, short steep hills, all at altitude.

The danger for me, living in Massachusetts, is that the last 6 weeks or so before the Disney marathons I'm training inside due to the ice and fear of a nasty fall. The college's indoor track is one of my training grounds, but it is flat-city. If I ran the same pace every lap every day I'd get fit, but my quads and calfs would not be ready for even the gentle hills of Disney. To offset this a bit I do some speedwork on the track, perhaps mile repeats 30-45 seconds faster than my desired race pace. This does build quads and calfs, but not enough.

The other indoor training location is that dreaded treadmill. On this I always have the incline at least 0.5 degrees. This may not sound like much, but trust me, it's much harder than no incline at all. In addition, I throw in segments where I increase the incline to 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 depending on my goal for the day. This again builds strength in the legs. As the Disney races get closer I actually throw in the hill segments as they appear on the course. For the steep but short hill by the Contemporary I'll set it at 2.0 or even more, just before mile 10.

Good luck and feel good about running in the hills. I feel guilty because I really don't do enough of it.

Take care

Craig

Amy - I'm there with Craig, ask whoever said it to try and run downhill about 3 hours into a marathon training run - then tell me you're not working something. I actually found my downhills harder than uphills on the very long runs. A nice thing to do is to use downhills to play with pace a bit - I try and keep the amount of effort I feel I'm expending cardiovascularly the same (ie keep breathing at the same rate, don't actively work my arms etc harder), but speed up my legs so I'm covering more ground, it just livens things up - and a few people from last year may also remember I have a tendency to stick my arms out to the side while going down them as it's fun!!!

Okay, I forgot a name here and can't work out how to go back but whoever's having trouble sticking to their 5k-10k plan - my advice. Don't use it!!! If following a set plan doesn't work for you, then don't follow a set plan.

To run 10km all you really need to do (!?) is build up to running for an hour at least once a week 1-2 times before the big day (plus do 3-4 shorter runs each week to give you base endurance), so make that your aim and do it how you want to do it. Until I did the marathon I never followed an official training plan for my half's - all I'd do is increase my distance by 10-15 minutes on my long run each week. Just remember the 10 per cent rule - to avoid injury you should never increase distance by more than 10 per cent a week (although if you're just starting out, I'd say never increase it by 10 per cent a run). And if you don't like the idea of running long every single weekend, drop back a bit every 2 weeks. It's then up to you what you do and when you do it. Some people like the discipline of a training plan, others don't, work with what makes you happy and gets you out there.

That's all my news for today - did 6km last night in 38 minutes, could probably have pulled it out in 36 but got lazy at the end and went window shopping as I ran (not something you do at speed!). One more run till my hols - and at the moment not sure if I'm taking my trainers - I know I won't run outside as it's too hot in thailand (102 at the moment) and not sure what the gyms like at the hotel. And in Tokyo I think we'll be walking about 6 hours a day so not sure I need to workout!!! I'm already over packed so we shall see. Helen

UPDATE ON THE CANDY CANE INN!!!!

I emailed them this weekend & gave all the details about what I had done, the conversations I had & the lack of caring from the employees., along with copies of my email confirmations. I told them I understand mistakes happen, but its how you handle them that's important. I also told them about the Disboards & how I would be telling my story to all that would listen.

Well, today I get a call from the general manager. My email got to the owner :teeth: and he apparently called the GM and blessed him out about the situation. The GM is not someone I had talked to before. He was very helpful, appologetic (sp?) and not only did he fix everything, he blocked of my exact room. He asked me what floor I wanted to be on & went ahead & assigned my room & said he looked forward to meeting me. He gave me his direct email address in case I needed anything else. Now this was customer service :thumbsup2 I wasnt planning on staying there even if things got resolved, because I had no confidence in them. But now I do & I am thrilled to get to stay there will all my WISH buddies! I was researching hotels all weekend trying to decide where else to stay.

Sara- dont cancel! Just call & confirm your ressie & make sure you get a copy in the mail.

Tomorrow Southwest is having a DING sale, so I am hoping to get airfare for Minnie. Then both trips will be settled :goodvibes

Just had to share the good news. Have a great day everyone!

Hi y’all!

Wow I can’t keep up with the posts. I’ve been wicked busy this past week.

MDM I’m praying for you and your mom and your family. I’m so sorry to hear you news. :grouphug:

Christa—I love your house. I have one very similar, come to think of it, I think I have several really snazzy houses. I might own a whole neighborhood in Lexington. I’ll have to photograph them. But I better leave the ski mask at home or I’ll get accused to casing the joint! :rotfl2: Keep the photos coming. I always have a better attention span when there are pictures to look at.

Lily—great news on the trip! :thumbsup2 Good thing DH was spying on you!

Judy—Love the wild life. You live in an entirely different world than me! I’m jealous.

Kevin—You are speedy :moped: and I shall call you Speedy from now on. I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions about swimming. So far my maiden voyage taught me I don’t have a clue how to breath and get the oxygen I need to my muscles.

Helen—I had a feeling you were talking Celsius. Even I find 10 deg F full coat/glove/hat weather. I don’t know anyone who would be uncertain on that one. As for 50 deg F, well that’s definitely t-shirt weather unless your standing around idle!

Mel—your kids are beautiful. What’s the age gap? Mine is 10.5 years. It’s a challenge.

MelR—Congrats! :cheer2: Didn’t I tell you to aim for 4:45 and you made me take it back! Sounds like your training run was a huge success to me.

Amy-- the laws of physics state that the total work done around a closed loop is zero. That means, where gravity works against you on the loop, there is an equal amount of gravity working for you somewhere else on the loop. As for running, your legs use different ratios of muscles on the uphill versus downhill portions and both are necessary for total training.

OK, the age talk. All you “thirties somethings” are spring chickens! I’m with Cam, 42. But I felt much older when I was 38!

Lynn & MickeySP—looks like the weather will break for the Half. The –10 deg (F) wind chill should be replaced with ~40s by race day.

Speaking of race day. I am not looking forward to this half. My last three runs have been total STONKERS, totally uninspired and HARD. Right now I’m planning on a 2:30ish finish (my Applefest Half was 2:03). I sure hope this funk lifts soon. I ran 5.85 miles on Saturday and then nothing but an arctic walk through Boston yesterday.

Paul and I went to see Blue Man Group last night. They picked us to be the “late comers”. For those of you who haven’t seen it, they shine a spot light on the late comers, put them on the big screen, and sirens go off while the Blue Men act all disgusted with you! The funny thing is, Paul has never been late to anything in his life and we were the first two in the theater. It was a great show. I'd love to bring DS, he'd love it. DD saw it a couple of years ago with her cousin.

Sunny

Tomorrow Southwest is having a DING sale, so I am hoping to get airfare for Minnie. Then both trips will be settled
Hey TiffJ - how do you know this? Or are you just saying that when SW does their DINGs tomorrow you hope you'll be able to get a flight to Orlando?

OMG! OMG! OMG!

Stop the presses!

I just got a bonus and it's enough to cover our Marathon Trip!

Whoooooo hoooooooo! :Pinkbounc :cheer2:  :woohoo:

This is VERY cool because our company stopped giving managers a bonus about four years ago. It's a "Loyalty Bonus". Ummm, ok, yeah sure.

Whooooo hoooooo! :cheer2: :woohoo: :Pinkbounc

Amy - I haven't gotten to the part of MFM where he says not to tweak. I'm going to have to, because I can't change everything else in my life. And besides, Kevin said it was OK to tweak. :teeth:

"RFT"? Is that a technical term? :lmao:

BTW...."The person who told you running on hills wasn't beneficial is a total dope." I COMPLETELY agree. How can it NOT be beneficial?

See? All that pretending to work really pays off! :hyper:

Judy

Sunny - Thanks! I think you actually were pulling for 4:30 until i talked some sense into you. I was really happy with 4:45 it was still reasonable and the pace was under (just barely) 11:00mpm. I'm thinking you are overestimating your half time by quite a bit. You know once you get there and in the race environment, you'll get all excited and take off! When is your 1/2? is it this upcoming weekend??????

Judy! Great news about your bonus!!! That is just too cool. Also, about our weekend schedule, I think Bingham says to not mess with the "order" of things. Which is actually different than tweaking the schedule I guess now that I look at it. I think that as long as we keep the same general order of run or walk days and rest days it should be okay...according to him! And like you said....Kevin said it's okay :teeth: ! Thanks Kevin!

:grouphug: Thanks Sunny, Judy, Kevin, Craig, Helen and Carrie and anyone else that I may have missed  . You guys are awesome, I really appreciate the feedback on my hill running. BFHs and LFHs (thanks Christa and Bree for my absolute favorite new acronyms)....I'll just take 'em as they come and know that they are helping! Even if I am RFT afterwards! :rotfl:

Sunny: Blue Man Group sounds like so much fun! I've been interested in seeing them for years now. How cool to be "singled out" in the crowd! Sounds like fun. And pixiedust: for your upcoming half.

Tiff: :cool1: Way to go on the Candy Cane Inn....good for you for following up. In the end of the day I think you are all going to be happy there. We stayed there for a few days last November and it is such a cute little hotel. I really wish I was doing the DL Half  . Disneyland is such a great place....you are all going to have sooooo much fun!!! I'll be there in spirit with you all!
