Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi All -

Wow, this was the weekend to race! We had some great race results! Way to go everyone! Melr - I am counting yours in the great races because you finished when it would have been perfectly acceptable not to finish. You are inspiring!

Quick question for the guys! Why do men feel the need to blow their horn when I am (or any woman) running down the road???

They don't honk at me when I run down the road. Hmm, perhaps its your lovely shape that inspires them to make noise.
And they don't offer me beer either! (Probably because I would take it) I once had a lawn care man ask me if I needed some water. I must have looked pathetic.

Hey Maherae and Big Vic:

Where are you guys staying for the Snickers/Seaside Half Marathons? Just made a ressie for New Orleans but not seein anything in particular that excites me about Albany or Seaside...

Matt - There is not much past the Sandestin Hilton in the way of hotels - its all condos. You might check into one of those. As for Albany, do you mean Albany, GA? If the host hotel is booked then get busy and find anything in the area because there are not alot of hotels in the area. I think the extended stay hotels were new when we lived down there (4 years ago) so you might try one of those. And yes, I have lived just about everywhere in the south.

take care everyone!
Cecilia

Good morning team!!!! It is so warm here--40 degrees!!! I actually drove to work with my windows half way down because I was hot wearing long sleeves and a wool coat!! :rotfl: I ran 4 miles last night and it felt SO good, I'm still doing r3/w3 and keeping my miles in the upper 11:00's to let my IT band heal completely, and it was so hard to keep my intervals and not run more or faster. I think I'm going to keep it at 3/3 for the next week and then bump it up to r4/w2 and see what happens. We really need a crossing fingers smilie! :)

Angie--:bday: You got some great presents!!!!! Good luck on your interview! :wizard:

Craig--Thanks for the word of caution, I am slowly rehabbing my knee, I didn't even run the first 3 weeks after the marathon, I only did the elliptical and lifted weights. Now that I'm back to running, I'm still keeping my running/walking intervals equal and I'm running about a minute slower than I usually run per mile. I have learned my lesson about what happens when you don't let an injury completely heal itself. The Flying Pig is May 6, are you doing anything that weekend? :)

Tiffany--:dancer: :dancer: :dancer: Congratulations on your PR!!! That is fantastic!!!!

Cam--I am so glad that you found a solution to your feet problems and that you are finally wearing the correct size. That explains so much about your toe nails falling off. I'm sorry that the people at your local running store don't take you seriously, I really think the next time you go in there you should wear your Donald medal, your Minnie medal, your Castle medal, and your Mickey medal. And oh yeah, you need your grille to got with all that BLING!!!! :teeth:

Dave--I'm so glad you are okay! I would be so gun shy if I were you. Stephen laughs at me, but that's exactly why I do lap after lap in my neighborhood, I'm scared to run on the "real" roads. Although truth be told, neighborhoods really aren't any safer, I've been almost hit by people backing out of their driveways more than once. :sad2: Have fun with the princess: princess: 's today!!

Carrie--That 5K looks like so much fun!! Awesome job! How is your hip? Any pain?

Melissa--Have you recovered from your 50K? Just typing 50K blows my mind!! Is the knee feeling better?

Kevin--I know it's sometime this week, so either belated or early :bday:

Stephanie--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: feel better soon!!! I second the milkshake and besides, today is Fat Tuesday! :joker:

Matt--I gotta be honest and say I laughed out loud when you said that 15 miles was too far to drive from the hotel to the race. I work about 16 miles from home, that distance is nothing to me!!! :rotfl:

Christa
--HONK!!!! I get honked at too, I just ignore them and figure they are jealous!! At least they aren't running me off the road!! :car:

Okay, I have to go, work is starting to pile up! Hopefully I can check back in later!!

Krista - SO glad you're feeling good. That is grat that you'r eholding yourself back. SO hard to do, but I'm sure that your IT band is thanking you!

Myt hip has felt GREAT since the marathon! The back of my knee felt a little funky for a few minutes, but has been fine since. Thanks for asking!

Morning team! I'm feeling loads better this morning. My fever broke sometime during the night-I woke up around 2am drenched in sweat (either that or I was training in my sleep;) ) Thanks for all the well wishes. I did have my milkshake for dinner last night--the only good thing about strep is I can have ice cream for meals and no one can say anything

Christa--hmmm, I must be running in the wrong spots, cuz' no one honks at me either--I did, however, get hoots and hollers from the construction guys across the street--darn that they are finished--it was good for my self-esteem!:lmao:

Krista--great to hear from you--glad to hear that you're still taking it easy on that IT band! But, I do have some bad news, we'll be doing hte Minnie, so no Flying Pig for us. I think since DH grew up in OH, that going to cincy isn't much of a vacation for him:confused3

Matt--the only thing I can think of that close to Seaside are house rentals. Maybe you could find one that will rent nightly??? I've used Rivard of South Walton rentals before--might want to look at them. I'm a fan of Greyton Beach--it's a little closer to Seaside than Destin. Also might check beachesofsouthwalton.com. Hope that helps!

Okay, need to go and start cleaning the house. After being in bed for hte past 2 days, the place is a disaster, and it has the "sicky-icky" feeling as well. Have a great Fat Tuesday all!

Hi Krista- You know one of the things that bothered me the most about the close call I had with the car? The car was coming out of MY NEIGHBORHOOD. Lately, when I start my LRs, I leave one end of my neighborhood, loop around it for about 1.5 miles, and pass the other end of my neighborhood. So this car had cut through my neighborhood and almost hit me at the other end. I was trying to see if it was one of my neighbors. So that's what gets me - it's not like I would have been any safer if I stayed in my neighborhood and did the loops around it. I should look into the Road ID. I don't have one, and I think I should. My DW wants me to run with a cell phone too - just in case of emergencies, but I haven't wanted to. I generally hate using our cell phone. We just have a trac phone where you pay by the minute.

Say hi to Steve for me. I can't believe I haven't met you IRL yet. I'm looking forward to meeting you at the Pig.

Christa- Have you decided on running the Flying Pig yet? It would be great to see you again. What was that phrase you had about the wind? It was "lickin' chick'n", or something like that?

Wow, I think I'm caught up, but I know I've missed a million posts I wanted to reply to.

I just won 4 tickets to Disney On Ice from a radio station!

Kristi—you are so lucky! The only thing I’ve ever won is a can of pumkin from a grocery store scratch ticket!

Sunny - Housing prices are just nuts. We have become the bedroom community for Manhattan. When we moved here when I was little, it was all farmland. My sister and I used to love to go by a big old cow farm so we could see the herd. Now...it's Martha Stewart's estate. You are barely allowed to cast your eyes in that direction without rebuke. We used to ride on beautiful trails all over Bedford, but now a huge portion of them are closed, because it's Ralph Lauren's property. I much prefer the cows.

Judy— I guess everything is relative. I see those current “huge” lots in your area and am amazed. For me, when I was young (11-12ish), there were big chunks of woods all through Lexington, and lot’s of “big” spacious lots. They’ve cut down all the woods except the official conservation land and sub-divided the lots into tiny parcels. We actually had horses and cows too. :sad2:

Sunny - yes Boston is a tough place. The best story I have about this is a few years ago Martha and I were in Hawaii and sadly had to get on the plane and come home. We were in the baggage claim area of Logan Airport waiting for the luggage, thinking about the super-friendly people and unbelievable surroundings we'd just left in the Hawaiian paradise. The doors opened to the outside loading area and we heard at top volume, "move that blank, you blankity, blank, blankity, blank, blank, blank." A lady in the crowd of luggage retrievers turned and said, "welcome to Boston."

Ain’t it the truth! We took the Magical Express home this trip and our driver stood up and introduced himself by name, then wished us a safe and pleasant trip home. Then he drove the speed limit; obeying all traffic laws to get us safely to the airport. On the Logan side we took Logan Express home. Our driver said no greeting, took our tickets without a single word. He drove like a maniac. Cut off another bus as we left Logan and swore at the other driver! I turned to Paul and said, “wow, what a difference!.” But, on the other hand, Boston is rich in heritage and culture. If Lesley does stay in the area, there is plenty of good here, too. I shouldn’t be so negative all the time!

TXAng—Congrats on the vacation approval! You are on your way!!!!!

I hit a car today!

Dave— I can’t believe what a close call you had. I’m so glad you didn’t get hit. Running is good for the health but oh so dangerous!

Stephanie—Congrats on the 15K race. Those are awesome splits.

Have I mentioned how crazy the people here get when snow is predicted? They storm the grocery stores and buy (I kid you not) milk and toilet paper!!! Go figure.

That’s too funny. I’ve always noticed the run on milk, I haven’t noticed the TP! What do they do with all that milk?

We went to the Under Armour outlet a couple weeks ago...found some new WISH team equipment:

This is optional equipment, right?????

Matt—Great race report. Sounds like great bling!

Big Vic and Jim and Laura—I’m sorry about Dale, Jr’s 500. Our guy (Jeff Gordon) didn’t win either. :(

Angie—Woo Hoo, you had a great race. Ten minutes faster than your goal. That’s outstanding.

Helen—With my health issues this past year I was forced to learn to walk fast in prep for Goofy. I learned real fast that walking is not an easier form of running—it is a sport unto itself and it is HARD! My hats off to all the walkers; I can’t walk fast for beans.

MelR—Wow, what a race! I can’t believe you had to wade through thigh-high ice water! Now you are an ice bath believer!!!!! I hope your knee heals real quick.:wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Jim—great race report. Don’t you just hate those “no training” speed demons!!! Oh, you can’t hate him, he’s your DS. I bet your mighty proud of him!

Carrie—wow, that really was an Ice Fest! Great pics.

TiffJ—Congrats on the PR.

All these reports are awesome!

Sunny

Jim, sounds like a great race. How great that you can do that with your son.

MelR, while that race sounds extremely brutal, the course you described sounds beautiful.

Dreambeliever, that 40 degree temps yesterday sounded awesome. I am glad you made it outside. I work on PT, and had to work yesterday. I am REALLY looking forward to spring.

I hit the TM after work and walked for 30 min at just under a 16min/mile pace. Stretched for 15 min after.

Today is a rest day for me.

Maggie

Dave--Wow. And you would think you are safe in your neighborhood. Again, I'm glad you are okay. Get the Road ID--it'll be the best $20 you have ever spent!!

Stephanie--BOO!!!! But you'll have fun at the Minnie. :cutie:

Where is Colleen?????

Oh, I forgot to post the "me, me, me, me" part!:lmao:

Week 4 of my training was a total bust due to weather and DS getting sick. I did two 6 milers and called shoveling xt. That left 2 3milers undone and no LR (should have been 11).

I'm finally up to my initial full does of Neurontin and it defnitely is affecting my strength. Hopefully, that will be transient.

I got a 6 miler in yesterday so at least Week 5 is off to a good start.

Sunny

Krista - I drove home from preschool w/ my windows 1/2 down too!! It is 56 and sunny. My knee was actually just as bad yesterday. I haven't done enough walking to know today. Yesterday boy was home and i had to go up and down the stairs alot! I think (phil is off today) when phil gets home we may kayak. I have the spring fever so bad that i actually thought about putting on this little thin short wet suit that i got at sams and swimming. I soon realized that would be insane as the lake had ice on it last weekend!!! It would probably help my knee though.

Dave - It was time to reup our cell phone contract and I went with the LG 8600 (basically the chocolate but in a flip style) that has an MP3 player in it. This phone is nearly as thin as an IPOD and I found an arm sleeve that fits great. With the bluetooth stereo headset I am good to go. I always run on the side of our country road and it scares my family so this seems like the best compromise.

:welcome: to any newbies I missed. You've found awesome team!

:cheer2: to all those that got out and ran races this weekend. I am as always amazed at all that you do!

This week is my last at my current job and I'm in the middle of an audit so I won't be around much. I did manage to hop on the dreamill last night though. A little sore in the back/hip as normal but not too bad.

Hi Sunny! Great to hear from you. I always worry when you don't post. Good luck adjusting to the neurontin. I hear you about shoveling and x-training. On Sunday (my rest day), I shoveled snow off my roof for 1 hour. We have a flat roof over our back family room addition, and we noticed we were starting to get a leak into the house from an ice dam. So at 7:30p Sunday night I get up on the roof to shovel off the snow. Whew, that took it out of me. Some rest day...

Mel - love the thong, lol:lmao:

Carrie - I loved your pictures of the 5k...what a beautiful area and I'm impressed that you braved the elements and ran in that. I'm a fair weather walker. ha, love the shirt too!

Guess what's going on outside???? Yep, it's snowing here again. It's a good thing I love the white stuff;) Ok..gonna go get my hair cut and I hope to walk (inside) afterwards.

:lmao: Who wins a can of pumpkin? Better yet, who thinks that is a great prize? :lmao:

I was about 13 and I bugged my mother to death until she collected the prize. I don't recall what I did with the can of pumkin:rotfl:

But then again, I don't enter contests or play the lottery or do anything that would increase my chances to win something!

But then again, I don't enter contests or play the lottery or do anything that would increase my chances to win something!
Too funny!

My sister & I have both won on Mix & Kiss recently - so try calling those stations to win something! Now that Julie is out of the loop, maybe other people have half a chance! :)

I am hitting the Y later for some wogging. I have to stay late at work with breaking news, so it will probably be later than I planned.

Hi, I am a newbie jumping right in. I started training consistently this week, building up mileage, but most importantly, eating right which I have never done in training before. Training for a marathon has been my excuse for eating anything I want; therefore, I have always been fit enough for a marathon with training, but I have not been healthy. All good so far, except for the weather.(but hey, its February, right?). My son thinks dad is off his nut for turning down dessert. This is true, but it has nothing to do with turning down dessert.

God bless my new team!

Just a drive by...our computer crashed Saturday, and we had to buy a new one. This means I can only post from work until we get the home one up and running, and we can't do that until dh gets his work software loaded by his IT folk.

Anyway, I've started week 5 of training to train. I'm up to running 2.75 for my LR, and I'm up to nearly that in 30 minutes.

Here's a training question -- I'm not in training for a race until the Half, right now I'm just trying to get into the habit of running. At what point do I stop trying to go as fast as I can in 30 minutes, and start making that 35, then 40, etc.? I realize I need to be able to run for much more than 30 minutes since I'm never going to get to 3 minute miles! I think I'm going to peak soon on the "fastness" factor. Do I just stick with 30 minutes on my two regular runs, and keep adding distance to my LR? I know this is a rookie question, and any advice is greatly accepted!

Thanks for everything, feel great and run/walk far!
Maria

MelR – I can’t believe you were self-conscious! You silly girl! BTW, I LOVE trying shoes from RRS because they do free shipping both directions if you are a VIP and if you are returning a shoe they’ve recommended. I’ve had some great shoes from there that just didn’t work on my very oddly-shaped feet and I really think I just was ordering the wrong size. Good luck finding something that works. I am convinced it can make the difference between misery and bliss!

Kristi – you wear a 9.5? You’re such a tiny little thing! :rotfl:

My migraine was gone when I woke up this morning  , but my sinus headache is still there, just making me miserable. Howard was a sweetie, picking me up last night, taking me to some errands I had to do, and then driving me in this morning after doing the carpool. My partner was totally freaked out last night to see my car in the garage at 8:30, knowing how bad I was feeling yesterday. I am so fortunate to be so loved!

Tonight is going to be 4 miles on the TM even if it kills me! ;) We’ve decided to do 3 5Ks in March and I don’t want to embarrass DS13 at the third one, which is sponsored by the HS he’ll be attending this fall. I MUST run a significant part of that one and finish somewhere below 40:00. Hopefully, doing 2 before that will help me improve.

Stephanie – I hope you are feeling better. You have obviously wiped yourself out. Take good care of yourself. :goodvibes:

Jen – I had to laugh at the idea of an 11 shoe. How in the world do you keep them on your feet? Do you lace them a certain way? I have to “lock lace” these new ones, I think, to make sure my heels stay at the back. Do you do that?

Christa – your post reminded me of the quote – “Why run faster when you can follow this a@#? I think they were expressing their sadness at losing their “view”. :lmao: Or “I’m the fast woman your mother warned you about!” And if you flashed a smile at them, I’m sure they’d have driven right off the road. Would have served them right. I hate when cars beep – it always startles me and my heart races!

Tiff – I am so proud of you, girl! What an awesome finish and an amazing PR!!!! Now you know the sky’s the limit when you start training again. I hope your family gave you lots of hugs and kisses! So, how did DS do?

Lily – I can’t believe you’d actually say you are out of shape and expect any of us to believe you! :rotfl: You just did the Goofy, for goodness sake! I hope you find the golden apple tree so that you can sign up for as much personal training as you want, sweetie! Then, can you come here and share everything you’ve learned? ;)

Angie – Happy birthday! I am so glad your family made a fuss and got you really cool gifts, too! :) Good luck with your job interview! pixiedust:
OMG, Carrie – that looks so dratted COLD!!! I give you guys so much credit for getting out there in that! Hey, maybe doing a race in the bitter cold will compel me to move a little faster to get to the hot beverages at the end! However, the 5K we are doing on 3/3 ends at the sponsoring tavern and every participant gets a free beer or soda. I WANT COFFEE!!! Thanks for doing the trip report. That is one I’ll cross off my list of “races-to-do”. ;)

Dave – I hope you are having fun this week with the princesses! I am so sorry about your close call and I am so glad you are okay (except for being justifiedly shook up). Sending you a

Krista – your post made me almost spew my water all over my monitor! It’s bad enough I carry my Mickey around in my purse. Can you imagine if I tried to carry all that weight at once. That is one thing for certain – Disney sure knows how to do “bling”!!! Oh, and you’ll be interested to know – I lost ANOTHER toenail last night. That is 3! One more to go, it looks like. Gosh, my feet are so ugly I don’t know how I’ll ever wear sandals again. Howard keeps saying “badge of honor, baby, badge of honor” :lovestruc I am so glad you are being cautious with your pig training, and not trying to do too much too fast.

Sorry to anyone I missed! I just can’t seem to keep up these days. Isn’t that awesome! Our team is just absolutely the BEST! Imagine how we’ll grow even more when people start “training” for WDW later this year. OMG!

Maria - The rule of thumb is that you can increase your total weekly distance by 10 perecnt per week. I would think you could do that for time too, if you're running about the same pace. Right now, you should not worry about going as fast was you can every run. That's a good way to injure yourself. Also, since you're not in training yet, you may want to increase by 5 percent to help avoid injuries. My personal opinion is that you don't need to do more than 30 to 40 minutes twice during the week and 3 to 5 miles on a weekend long run to be ready for the half training. IIRC, it starts at 30 min, twice during the week and 2 miles on Saturday. HTH!
