Wk of Feb 17th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Lambeau is awesome and I am really sad about missing the marathon there this year. But I am sure I will have fun in Madison with Pat!!!
BTW, forgive my poor spelling of Lambeau. Too tired to look up the right way today.. Knew you'd know what I meant. I was very close to tryign to fit Madison in. It's 400 miles from the Mackinaw bridge run, though. Not gonna' happen.

It is on the sticky Walking/Running Info Websites.

The code is WISHD. You have to go thru the team link up top. :goodvibes

Carrie and Jen--Yep, I'm going to be a SAHM, I will be going back to work for a couple of months for insurance reasons, but by this time next year, I should be home full time.

Judy--Maybe I can get like a 11x14 picture of you and hang it above the crib? I think it would be fitting. :) Oh, and I know exactly what you mean about having the guts to start the half marathon by yourself. For my first half at Disney in 2006, I talked my Mom into training and doing the half so I would have someone with me. We didn't run together, but we hung out before the race started and stayed together at the start. You should be very proud of yourself!

Craig--So jealous that you will be Paris this summer. Paris, England, and Germany are on my list of someday trips.

Maura--We get a 15% discount on Running Warehouse's website and free 2nd day shipping. Use WISHD as the team code. I don't think you can use it on Asics or Mizunios though. Congrats on training!!!

Krista

You guys are great! Thanks to all for the kind words and the welcomes to the group. The sand has thankfully decreased to a more sane level and I was actually able to get out for a 3 mile run this evening and it felt great. Running has been my sanity over here. I hope I can maintain the discipline when I get back in May and have a real life again! I am looking forward to doing some runs with my wife again (I'm sure she's really pleased to hear that!). :yay:
I will get back in time to run the Cotton Row 10k in Huntsville and was actually excited to sign up for it the other evening. Kristen is running the 5k that morning so we will bring the kids and make a day of it.

Great information about the WISH discount at Running Warehouse - I will due for some new shoes in about a month and will take advantage of that.

Thanks again to all!

Z

Krista - LOVE the bedding! And I have to say, I am very jealous that you are going to get to be a SAHM! I am currently trying to get into the school system in some non-teaching, but school year only capacity. That way I can make some money, and still be home with Zack when he's not in school. Our crazy schedules just aren't cutting it anymore. And sometimes the extra money is really not worth it. I'd rather be home with my kiddo.

Judy
- you should have called me - I would have walked down the hall with you!

I am going to try to go to yoga tonight (and not 'pull a Carrie' :lmao: Only kidding - love you!). But I left my yoga bag/mat in the minivan. Which Chad has in Boston with him at work. Argh! This is the issue when you have 3 cars - you always leave what you "need" in another car! I think they have some community mats, if so I will use that. Otherwise, I will bike or something.

This job search thing has me nuts. I haven't looked for a new job in 9 years! :scared1: It is scary but exciting at the same time. It is definately time for me to do something else. I tend to bang my head on the counter (seriously, I do) during the news since they say or do something dumb on air, or the producers & director screw me somehow. Umm, and I might yell some not-so-disney-like words from time to time. ;) But such is the life in a control room. Time to move on. Way too burnt out!

Krista - glad you're doing well and the bedding is adorable!

Craig - Paris will be great I'm sure. DS applied to Manchester Met (yes, Manchester UK) so if he gets accepted for fall term I'll take two weeks to go with, get him settled and do some serious sight-seeing!

Kristi - I'm sure it'll all work out but know it's crazy. DH is currently looking for something new. Is a techie but the place he's at promised advancements that just arent' happening for anyone there. Time to move on.

Thanks for the info on the discount at Running Warehouse. I really need to pick up running pants/tights.

Jen - where do you camp in Wisconsin? We have ressies in the Dells for May. Our April trip will be bit more local - if the snow ever goes away and temps stay above 30.

Doing some core work tonight since it's a rest day.

Have a good one everyone!

Kristi - We have a job opening here... and you would work for me!!! How could you get it any better???? :hippie:

Carrie - If you ask me, I think you should do Madison instead. After all, you do Mackinaw EVERY year!!!!! :lovestruc

Liz - Believe it or not, but we avoid the Dells as much as possible during "the season". Forgive me for saying this, but it's a tourist trap!! :rotfl2: There are so many Lodge hotels in Wisconsin that have indoor waterparks, so we get our fill of that here. Our favorite campground for the kids is Jellystone in Fremont. There are a couple of other campgrounds we really enjoy also, most in the south central Wisconsin area. With gas prices, we hate to drive too far because we camp a lot in the summer. We try to stay around 2 hours away.

Wow - I finally caught up! I'm off from school most of the week (just need to go in once or twice and check on messages), and I'm having a harder time keeping up when I'm NOT working!! Guess I'm missing all those sneaky WISH board check-ins that I do during my work day!

Boy, still no snow here in Philadelphia. While I am not a big fan of winter, as far as I'm concerned snow is one thing that redeems it slightly. Maybe those of you buried in the stuff could just blow it slightly to the south and east. My kids sure would be happy about that!

I've had a pretty good week training-wise. I managed a much better TM workout on Saturday (with thankfully no embarrassing incidents this time :) ), and got outside for a great run yesterday. I also did a ton of walking this week - I was in New York celebrating my daughter's 16th birthday :scared1: and walked all over the place. I got to see the World of Disney Store there which was fun.

Anyway, I hope all of you who are nursing illnesses and injuries feel better soon! I try to get here more regularly so that I can comment to some of you directly.

Evening WISHers! Hope everyone is doing well. To all those with illnesses or injuries, here's some pixiedust: to get better soon!

Lily: so very happy to see you up and around. Don't tire yourself out but I'm so happy to see you!!

KiraG: snow is significantly over-rated! We've got some heading our way on Friday and Saturday that I'd happily send to you but I've got some friends nearby who don't want it. Hope you're able to get some things done despite having the kids home!

twoWDWfools, Kristi1357: hope you both enjoy your workouts tonight! Rest day for me but tomorrow I'll do something.

Z: great job on getting outside for a 3-miler! And add my thanks to all you are doing.

Maura: WTG on getting 1/2 way through your training plan! Yes, a race or two before the Minnie would be a good idea. If you've never run a race you should run one before the Minnie to give yourself some experience with it. You'll do great!

Judy: you are such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing. It takes real courage to do these races and when you face it and conquer it, it really means something.

Rest day for me. My trainer is on vacation this week so I'll do my own workout tomorrow after work. That can be hard but I have to do it.

Have a great evening everyone!!

Becky: Your running group sounds like so much fun! I'm sure you'll enjoy it, maybe even more than your Fleet Feet job. I'm sure you'll get sick of us peppering you with questions.

Helen: I love hearing about your adventures. I haven't been on a horse since I was probably 8 or so, and I can imagine the language I'd use now that I didn't know then! Congrats for adding a couple of halfs to your schedule.

Bill: Good job on the runs for everyone in the family. I wonder if Timmy is just trying to motivate Lynnda to move a bit quicker?? :confused3 :rotfl2:

Allyson: I'm so glad you're making progress on C25K and enjoying the podcasts; they drive me a bit nutters. And I love the plan for the check & TM; I'm trying to convince DOOD that it could go toward another trip to Disney.

WWDave: Too bad about extra work, as it interferes with spending time with us or training, but I'm glad to hear your tendon is better! :thumbsup2

Krista: It's so great to hear that you're feeling well & buying things. (It's called nesting, right?) I love the color combo of the bedding. It's such an exciting time, and I love hearing all the details.

Angie:  on the work situation & on the frustrating run. I hope things get better soon.

Stacie: Another tankini fan here...if you can get me into a bathing suit. :scared1:

Heather: It's good to hear from you--and to know you're keeping on track with your schedule!

Craig: Paris. I'm envious! But you deserve the time, as that academic schedule can really wear you down.

Carrie: Yea on the yoga! I know what you mean about coordination. My instructor kindly kept coming over to me to "guide me" into the correct positions.

Judy: WTG with the 3-miler. And :woohoo: for doing those halfs. I liked reading how just getting to the start can be a challenge--so true! You SHOULD be proud.

Jen: That must be an awesome campsite! It just has to be warm in April because you really deserve it after this winter you've been having.

Maura: You're doing awesome on your training! :cool1: Definitely sign up for something, if for nothing more than to test your race-day strategies out before the Minnie. And I can't believe I'm about to say this to someone on another team, :rotfl: but race miles count double for the challenge!

Z: Good news that you'll be back (relatively) soon & have a race scheduled. Another marker in the Goofy training. I also think it's great that you're making races a family event. :goodvibes

Kristi:  on the job search. I know how challenging and frustrating it can be. I'm sorry to hear you're so burnt out at your current job, too, as that makes your job search even more stressful.

Liz: Core work. *Shudder.* But so necessary.

Kira G.: If it's any consolation, it's snowing in Pgh right now, so maybe you'll get some if it drifts the right way across the state. I'm glad you're having a good training week!

Martha: Good for you for not slacking while your trainer is away. One of the trainers at my club was saying the other day that he breaks up with clients who aren't motivated to work on their own. He'd love you!

As for me: Another day on the TM, etc., but the MOST IMPORTANT news is that last night DOOD tells me we're going away for a 4-day weekend to celebrate my 40th b-day in April...to WDW! He wanted to keep it a surprise but decided he should tell me just enough about it so I don't make other plans. He's making all the arrangements in secret, except for the flight, and just wants me to tell him if there's something special he should add to the mix. DOOD likes Disney all right, but not as much as I do, and he's usually happy to let my type-A-ness take over. So the fact he's planning this whole trip is the best part of the whole b-day celebration. :cloud9:

Kristi - We have a job opening here... and you would work for me!!! How could you get it any better???? :hippie:
I would work for you in a heart beat! :goodvibes
If only NH and WI were closer....

Debra - that's awesome about the brithday trip to WDW! I had surprised Chad with a quick 2 night trip to WDW when he turned 30. I think I had more fun planning it than we had on the actual trip!

Well, I didn't get to yoga tonight. I am a huge slug today, for real (love ya, Dave! ;) ). I think I am just physically exhausted from my 6 miles Monday and 3 miles yesterday, on top of 5 hours sleep per night. Add to that the stress of starting to job search, and well, I have no excuse. I skipped yoga - it was wicked cold out too! Much easier to go to Uno's for dinner instead! :rotfl:

I will get back to it tomorrow.
Off to see if I can get Zack to bed early, so I can go to bed early...

GOOD EVENING TEAM!!!

Ok so I feel a little better!! Angie & Bobby are back!! :cool1:

The longest run I have had since surgery is 5 miles. We did 4.8 miles tonight and we did not do a very good job of keeping track of our time but we did get that first 2.2 miles - 19 minutes and second 2.4 miles 23 minutes. Didn't get the first .2 anyway... Still got a good average!!! Maybe it's all the pent up frustration from work. :confused3 I always run so much better with DH - we push each other. Gotta go to TECH practice at church, just wanted to share my good news with my TEAM :yay:

Angie and Bobby

Wow! Those are pretty darn fast splits for a couple who are coming off serious injuries.

Keep it up, but don't ask for too much too soon. I'd hate to see you back on IR.

Craig

The doctor finally said Timmy had an ear infection. He had been clear up till now but that seems to be causing all his pain. I still think it would have been easier for him just to say so but I get glared at with that suggestion. :lmao: Now we have medicine which will start tomorrow (first try with penicilan so have no idea what will happen) so maybe the end is in sight.

I don't think they make Asics that small, although it would probably help if he could walk first. He is still unsure of taking that first step, which is probably a good thing since he is still catchable when on all fours. :lmao:

Craig - I feel the need every now and then to poke a texas (lowercase was intentional) grad and see what happens. ;) After causing a few of my grad professors to hide when they see me coming, I know all too well what they get to put up with and have the utmost respect for them. :thumbsup2 I actually asked one if he ever went home since he was replying to emails at work at 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM the same day. :scared1: Have fun in Paris and just remember that everyone hates Americans or so the media would have us believe.

Judy - So the horses get everything dusted every week and poor Charlie doesn't. Hmmmm, mental note to sleep in Judy's barn if we ever get up that far. ;) At least you didn't make a wrong turn in the lobby and wind up playing with the giraffes or zebras.

Debra - I give up, what is DOOD. I can't figure that one out. Good job with the TM though.

Krista - The bedding looks nice. Now the fun begins in trying to get everything that the bedding is supposed to go on. Congrats on being a SAHM, Lynnda loves it (except when they have earaches and scream all day ;) ) and doesn't want to go back to full time work any time soon. Steve - perfect chance to get more tools to make a crib. :rolleyes1

Angie - Great job on the run tonight. I hope you don't pay for it later.

Kristi - Good luck with the job hunt. I hope something works out for you.

Bill

WWDave - Sorry to hear that your life has been so rough. Maybe you were harrassing that horse and it was going to show you who was boss! Or it didn't like a panda on it's back? :confused3 My continuing back issues stem from a buck off accident with my own horse. Loved her, but riding bareback finally did me in!!!

Jen, kind and gentle little me harassing anything or anybody, surely not. Must be the panda phobia, yep that's it.

Judy these horses were at the Smoky Mts National Park and belong to the park service. They get better treatment than I do. You know when you work for the government you are in fat sassy city.

Horse tamer Panda:hippie:

Krista – Glad to hear you’re feeling good! That bedding is super cute. That’s great that you’ll be able to be a SAHM. I’m a SAHM, too, and I’m really enjoying it.

Angie – Sorry the run was bad yesterday. Glad today’s was better!

Kristi – Good luck with the job search.

Debra – How fun!! What a sweet DH you have.

Bill – Poor little guy! Hope he feels better soon.

Well, my big exciting news is that I had my 6-week postpartum appointment today, and I'm officially restriction free, so that means I can start running again!!!

Of course, this news comes just as we're having visitors for a week, so I'll probably postpone starting until they're gone. But I'm so excited!

And as a bonus, my mom volunteered to watch our little guy tomorrow night so that DH and I can go see Spirit of the Marathon! Yay!

Bill

That's THE University of Texas, at Austin, young man.

2 of our best friends on the planet are faculty at A&M. They have great jobs, earn big money since A&M is rich, and live where the cost of living is almost zero.

Of course, it's a long way from College Station to anyplace. :rotfl:

Take care of Timmy, Martha and I fought the ear infections for years with Lesley. That's another thing about parenting I don't miss.

Craig

Time for your weekly dose of insanity from thndr "doesn't know when to stop" matt!

Returned last night from our multi day jaunt to Death Valley and Las Vegas. While out in Death Valley enjoying the gorgeous scenery, I completed one of the toughest runs I've managed to date. Prior to going I scouted out google maps and gmap-pedometer to find where I could do a 13 miler for my taper. Initially I was going to run either to/from Badwater (lowest elevation in the US at -282 feet) from our campsite, but that looked like 17 or 18 miles. I decided to involve Dante's View, a peak only a few miles laterally from Badwater, but over a mile in the air. :upsidedow I worked the road that goes up there backward and discovered that right where it meets the main highway that comes up from the valley was the 13 mile mark.

My loving DW was willing to get up with me predawn around 6 and drive me the several miles to the start point. Luckily there was plenty of elevation gain on that drive, and that put the start at 1989 feet. She was in the rental, which due to a really late arrival at LAS was a free upgrade from our reserved compact to a Infinity FX35. Highly recommend flying into LAS late on a Friday of a 3 day weekend with a bunch of conventions going on so you get "whatever is left" for the price of a compact... Same nutrition plan as usual, gatorade at miles 2, 6, 10, and gels with water at 4, 8, and 11.

After the first few miles I was able to mentally make the gradual uphill my "flat" and just treat the steeper portions as hills. From mile 7.5 on though that all went away, as the hill just became constant and relentless. Across and up yet another valley I climbed, straight ahead seemingly making no progress horizontally or vertically for miles. Then I reached the actual mountain range, and it became twisty, turny, switchbacky, and even more steep. My run was probably normal walking speed by then as I struggled to keep one foot in front of the other. I had already been averaging around 11:30mpm instead of my usual 10 or so to compensate for the hills, but soon was in the 12's, and very soon after that in the 13s. I had taken a picture at the bottom of a sign that said "Last 1/4 mile 15% grade" so I knew the worst was yet to come.

Talk about trying to run up a wall, nothing like being 13 miles into a run and hitting a grade people are having trouble driving up. This was the only portion of the run I was forced to walk a few dozen yards, sadly within 1/4 mile of the finish. My calves were on fire and my hamstrings were feelin it too. Then I saw DW waiting at the top though and I managed to wobble my way up to the top. Upon returning home and checking the Garmin, I can confirm the final elevation of 5497 feet. This means...

Total elevation climbed in 13.33 miles and 2:42:45: 3509 feet :scared1:

On a sadder note the various hiking trails and running around Las Vegas trying to catch shows dinner reservations and plane flights has done a real number on my shins, and it looks like I'll be biking only hoping for them to heal prior to the marathon on 3/2. After that I'll probably be laying off the running for a while (likely during my next deployment), hoping that when I start up again it will be pain free.
