Wk of Feb 11--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi all! I've had very little time on the computer lately (trying to start my own business-- I've been a stay at home mom for almost 10 years, so it's a whole new world for me!), but I just wanted to stop by to say hi. I'll try and get some reading time a little later-- I can't believe there are already 4 pages! Anyway, my long run yesterday was just over 3 miles, so I guess that means I can do a 5k! I'm planning to do my first 5k with my daughter on Mother's Day; hopefully I'll be a little faster by then. Yesterday's run took me 45 minutes, which is a good start, I guess. I had a much easier time of it yesterday than last Sunday when I did only 2.5 miles, but it helped that it wasn't windy or as cold as last week. I was worried that my knee would bother me, but it didn't, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed until I get around to making a doctor's appointment.

I hope everyone's having a great day, and I'm looking forward to catching up on my reading later. See y'all!

Sunny: 6 miles while on Neurontin? And a spin class on wednesday? Are you nuts? Seriously, it's really good to hear that you are feeling up to it. :thumbsup2 I taught spin classes for 4 years. If you've never taken one, just listen to your body. If you need to sit in that saddle and just peddle, then do that.

Tinks: shoveling could be considered a XT session; depends on how much you end up doing and how much you can coerce someone else into doing. Our DD says that she wants to move out of the area b/c she is tired of shoveling snow. Reality check: when was the last time she shoveled snow? HA--never!

Monte: how was the snowshoeing? I tried to take DD snowshoeing many years ago, but she was definitely not a snowshoe-er.

OK, so here I'm going to show my ignorance. What is a stonker? I've seen it a couple times and wondered.

Thanks to everyone for sending happy thoughts about my hip. It's has it's good days and bad. It's just so frustrating b/c I'm not used to having a problem last 10 months!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Ok, ok - I knew I was going to get it from you guys! ;)

I guess I just keep thinking that I am an overweight walker - not an "athlete." I think of athletes as those naturally thin, toned people that I hate! :rotfl: When I said this stuff to Chad he said to me "who are you kidding? You've done two half marathons!"

So, I guess I will sign up for the class and see what happens.

No more :cool1: , ok? ;)

Stonker - Bad run, taken from Helen's book of English as spoken in the UK

Sunny - re: Garmin aquisition time. I usually just set it on the window sill while I put on my shoes and get ready to go. It's always ready when I am and that way I don't look like too much of a doofus (no comments please) doing the Statue of Liberty pose waiting for Sputnik to pass over my house. BTW, I'm often a little fuzzy even without the benefit of Neurontin. Enjoy the excuse.

D'oh, why didn't I think of that:lmao: I'm so used to being a geek it never occured to me that I might look strange doing the SoL thing:rotfl2:

Kristi and Carrie-- I had a hard time referring to myself as an endurance athlete to the doctor who looked much more like a runner than I do! We've got to get over this self-deprecation thing and strut our stuff:cool1:

Me? I'm an endurance athlete.
What's that look for?
One more look of disbelief and I'll sit on you.
Then I'll take you out for a gentle 10 miler and see what you think.....
:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Kevin-- congrats on making a decision to better your life. Good luck with the job hunt.

Martha-- I took one spin class with the same instructor before.... I know what I'm in for:eek:

Today's 6 miler became 5.9 in 1:05 because that's all the time the TM gave me. I started out too fast (5.8 mph) in hopes of finishing within the limit, when I realized I was pushing too hard I recalled the wise words of recent WISHers revelations and slowed down.

Sunny

[angietuck2 and westcliffemom, welcome back! Know you had a great time at WDW. Did you go to EPCOT and imagine running through it?:wizard:

Well, pixiesnake (Denise) and I walked from MGM to EPCOT then around the countries to get a sweet treat at Norway, does that count?

So, starting tomorrow, we all recite this to the mirror 5 times a day until we use it regularly adn without guilt!

Do you think the Neurontin is affecting my head? I'm trying to keep a low profile at work:lmao: :rotfl:

I'm itching to get out and run, but at 0 deg right now, I barely want to walk to the post office. Thankfully the weather is supposed to warm up here starting Wednesday, so I'll definitely get some running in then. I'll try to channel my motivation into doing some cardio/weights at home tonight. I'm a big fan of The Firm tapes - that generally makes up most of my XT days. I found a public pool nearby though, so I may try to get into the swimming thing too.

I've been going through the local race calendar to pick out some races to mix in with my training. So here's the plan:
- March 17: Calgary St. Patrick's Day 10K
- May 5: Minnie Marathon - Go Red for Women 5K
- May 6: Minnie Marathon - Women Run the World 15K
- May 27: Calgary Women's Run 5.5K
- June 9: Footstock 10K in Cochrane, Alberta
- July 8: HSBC Calgary Half Marathon

angietuck2/Angie - I've been meaning to ask you what you are taking in school?

solotraveler/Kevin - Best of luck with the job search!

It is so inspiring to read about everyone's training. I can't wait till the weather clears up and I have something more meaningful to add!

Oh, Sunny!! That is AWESOME!!! I'm printing it out...

wtpclc/Carrie, job change for you, too? :wizard: :wizard: (Glad you edited your post to KristiRed..couldn't figure out what I had said...;) )
westcliffemom/Stacey,
then around the countries to get a sweet treat at Norway, does that count?
Oh, definitely!! You'll be running right by there come May! But the sweet treat will be past Spaceship Earth...:hyper:
Kristi, Kudos to Chad!! You need more :cool1: , my friend. Overweight walker DOES NOT apply to you!! :sad2: Tell us how the class goes!
Abra Cat, starting your own business..wow!! Yes, you have made a good start. Just be slow and steady with the build up of speed. Let your body get used to this whole new effort you are putting it through!!:thumbsup2
cdn_gal_eeyore, Whoo Wheee..that's a packed next five months! Did you post that to the calendar thread?

OK, it's after 3 EST and Honeibee/Judy hasn't reported in. Hmmmmm..this work thing that is keeping people away....Well, it DOES pay for the races..:rolleyes1

Cam, Been meaning to tell you that I :lmao: with your "warm up's" at 4.0!!!! The day I reach 4.0 on the TM will be a red letter day for me!! You and Rhonda are going to be flying along that Minnie course this year. It will be sooooo different from last year for you!! PROUD of you!!:cheer2:

THank you so much, Anne. You are so sweet to me. But you overestimate my abilities when it comes to being outside. Something about not being able to "see the ground" keeps me from doing that pace outside. It is much easier on the TM -- no gradations, holes, bumps, inclines, downward slopes, etc. :goodvibes:

Thanks, Maherae-- I'm starting to learn that running involves compromising... with my body! I'd been building up my intervals, and found that 4/1 was too difficult:scared1: , so I've been sticking mostly with 3/1 and been doing a whole lot better.

Abra Cat[/B], starting your own business..wow!! Yes, you have made a good start. Just be slow and steady with the build up of speed. Let your body get used to this whole new effort you are putting it through!!:thumbsup2

Hey Everyone... I have been SOOO busy, this is my first chance to report in.

I WENT TO THE GYM AND RAN ON THE TM!!!!

I did 35 minutes, including the warm up and cool down. That is all I have time for during my lunch break. It was good. I did R5/W2. I don't have time to chit chat, but wanted to let you know that I AM BACK... at least for 1 day!

Morning all - disappeared for a few days there as the way physio has taped my foot means I can't exercise at all now when it's on, and boy that makes for a grumpy, miserable Helen. I got 40 minutes cycling in last night though as I had 24 hours without tape so feel much better now. And hopefully this might be the last taping.

Mel: Definition of 'big fluffy fibber" um, big, um, fluffy, and fibber means liar in English English. And trust me that Groundhogs eyes are too close together to tell the truth.

Cam (in da house): Well if we're running for bling I spose it's only right that we're training to hip hop - but if you turn up in January with a grill on your teeth I'm going to worry about you.

Who was it that said they had PF and ran through it? What did that mean to your symptoms? At the moment, my heel is only hurting when I actually walk (better than all day as before) but I'm worried about it flaring up again when I start.

Not much else to report here, am living on lettuce and butter beans with ranch dressing (!) as suddenly dropping for 4-5 hours of running a week, to nothing -not even a 10 minute walk round the supermarket each day - is not helping with my losing 10lb attempt!!! Hmm, talking of which, it's nearly lunchtime. Helen

Hey there team!!!

DH just asked me a question I can't answer and was hoping someone here knows.

How many people can register for the 1/2???

Thanks
Kim

So you have plantar fasciatis? Bless you. I've been there and back again . . .

In my case it came up 20 years ago when I was light, running lots, and running very fast. I have a high arch and very rigid food, and every foot strike caused the foot to flex across the bottom and the plantar controlled the flex as my feet weren't getting any support from the shoe. Eventually this turned into discomfort then pain, then real pain, but I kept on running hard since I was the fittest I ever was, and was turning in pr's almost every race at every distance.

Finally it got the best of me and I went to the sports podiatrist dude. The x-ray was great, as you could see a little tongue of bone where the plantar attached to the heel, due to calcification. He fit me with custom orthotics, the old hard plastic ones.

After that I always bought shoes with a removable insert. I would take them out and lay down a flat sorbothane insert and then the orthotics. And after every run I would rub small dixie cups of ice on the hot spot to put out the fire and keep the swelling down.

This was kind of a pain, but it worked. I was able to run pain free and keep on running a lot and very hard. I know it hurts but I'm confident you can find what you need to do to stay out there.

Good luck, and pleae let me know your progress. This is quite common for serious runners like you. When I went in to our excellent running store in Austin, Texas and told them my symptoms, they correctly diagnosed and described my injury, and convinced me to see the doc to solve the problem

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: YEEAAHHH BOOYYYEEE!! :rotfl:

Upped my miles to 3 today, ran the first and walked the rest. Unfortunately the bike trail is rather icy right now after a mile so I spent more time shuffling side to side looking for "dry" spots rather than concentrating on keeping my pace up. I'm gonna look around and see if I can find some YakTrax or something similar. Anyone here have any experience with anything that prevents slippage on snowy/icy roads that are compatible with running/jogging? I work the next two days, so I will be doing my XT work after work and see if I can get back out Thursday.

Mel- Darcey and I want to buy from Disney and would love to have SSR as our home resort, but it might be "sold out" by the time we are ready to buy (approx July-Aug)...sooo it might be AKV we buy into. Either way our next trip to WDW will be tentatively Aug of 2008 and we are planning a return trip in Jan of 2009. I've made a goal to go Goofy that year. (I've even made a sign "Going Goofy in 2009" and put it up on our fridge.)

Sunny- It speaks volumes of your dedication and your committment to continue to train with everything you have been going through. I am certainly awed, impressed, and inspired!:worship:

Stephanie A BIG :thumbsup2 for conquering those demons!

Cam You so Rock! Great times on the TM and for getting them fit into your schedule.

Here's a big HIGH FIVE to all of my WISH teammates for your training!

Andrew

OK, I am away for a couple of weeks and the posting has simply exploded. It is really great to see all the enthusiam and training going on around here. DW continues on the re-hab but was delayed a bit by a little thing called gall bladder surgery. She is doing fine post op but we all got hit with the flu last week and it truely was a sad sight around here. I did manage to get out for 3 days in a row now - 10 very cold miles on Saturday, 5.5 TM miles on Sunday and 4.5 much warmer (30 degrees today) miles today. You know, I actually was a lot faster last year at this time but hey at least I am still getting in the miles.

Great running/walking/wogging all!

I had a blast snowshoeing (sp?), but alot of it was up hill, so I thought my lungs were going to explode! We hiked for an 1.5 hrs., then it started getting too cold, so I threw in the towel and we headed back down. I think we're going out again on Thursday and we're doing the 5k on March 10th. Should be alot of fun...if any of you get a chance to snow shoe I highly recommend it, it's a great workout!:woohoo:
