Wk of Dec 2--WISH Walking/Running Club

Cecilia

Doing what is right for you is always the correct choice. We're all different, and have had good and bad experiences with the seemingly infinite number of variable we face in long runs and races. When you are out on the Marathon course, although surrounded by others you are also completely alone, as no one else can get you around the course. Others can help, but those 1,000+ strides per mile for 26.22 miles have to come out of you.

Good luck in these last few weeks and in the race. I'm looking forward so much to the race, but today I literally couldn't get out bed, completely fatigued. I'm playing hookey today and hope I have some bounce in my legs tomorrow. 7 mile run? I don't need no stinkin' 7 mile run!

Craig

OK everyone ..... here is my humongous catch up!!

Mel - Congrats on making the National Championship Game!!

Craig - I agree with you about Gu. The stuff works miracles. However, be VERY careful with powerade and Gu. I learned that lesson the hard way last Saturday. I usually only take water on runs with me, but instead I took gatorade. Gu and gatorade don't mix especially Vanilla Gu and Mango Gatorade. I almost upchucked right then and there. It took everything I had to stomach down the rest of the Gu.

Judy - I am so sorry about Mists trial. I hope she accepts your offer to buy her.

Kim - Be careful about a hot tub after a run. I used to do that at the gym, get in the whirlpool about 30 minutes after my run, and I started getting shin splints something fierce. As soon as I stopped doing that and started taking ice baths the shins splints stopped.

Colleen - That was me too. I have run 20, 22, and will be running 24 on Saturday. Then I start my taper. You are also not the only one who's friends and family worries about them on LR, especially the ones in the dark. I run on an old Rail Trail, and before the sun comes up it can get a bit scary. There's woods on both sides of the trail, perfect place for someone to hide, and the only thing I carry with me is my cell phone. Then last Saturday I forgot my cell phone in the car and DH tried to call me, after about an hour of not being able to reach me he started driving out to the trail, and had already asked his parents to come help him look for me. Luckily I got back to the car and phone before he got to the trail, but he was scared to death. I HATE running alone.

Steve - Sounds like my plan for while we are at WDW. Except I am gonna get into a cold tub, and let DH do the ice runs for me!!

Kelley - Don't feel bad, you aren't the only one who has been having a hard time keeping up. Between this and the photo contests I feel like I am constantly behind.

Christa - Maybe this is why I was so sick during and after my 22 miler. See my response to Craig for details......From the article you posted "In addition, never wash down gel with a sports drink instead of water; if you do, you'll end up with a 'molasses stomach' (gel must always be swallowed with the right amount of plain water)." I guess I know what NOT to do this Saturday!!

Pat - you are definately not the only one feeling a bit paranoid. My kids both have horrible coughs, and I keep praying they don't pass it on to me. And Every day for the past 3-4 days there has been a car accident REALLY close to me (within a couple of cars), so I am hoping it's not my turn next.

Well, I have been a complete and total bum. I haven't run AT ALL since Saturday. I am not hurting, just not motivated. Add to that the fact that it is freakin' cold, and I just haven't been able to get my behind out of the house. When it's cold in the morning the last thing I want to do is stick poor little Lucas in a jogging stroller and make him suffer so I can get my run in. I have a 24 scheduled for this weekend, and then it's taper time!!! The low is supposed to be 38 on Saturday. I don't know how to run when it's that cold outside. This is Florida people it isn't supposed to get that cold. I keep telling myself to just suck it up and do it, that way if it is cold during the race I will be prepared for it, but at the same time I keep trying to talk myself out of it. So far I have tried telling myself that I already ran 20 (plus 3 mile walk), and 22, that I don't really need to do 24, and I can just start my taper now!! Does that work?! DH has tried to suggest that we buy him a bike and one of those buggies you attach to the back of the bike for the kids, and that he would just go with me so I wasn't running by myself. The problem is I don't know ANYTHING about bikes. I walked into Target yesterday and felt completely dumb. I don't know what all of these different things are for. I just want a bike we can attach a little trailer to that will go 24 miles!! By the way, if any of you bike savvy people have any advice I would be very greatful. ;)

With the holidays so close I feel like a chicken running around with it's head cut off. I have pies to bake for a family get together this weekend. I have cookies to bake for my son's Christmas party at school. I have an entire Christmas dinner to do for my family, and Michael just got invited to his first birthday party with friends at school. Try to add running in there, along with Christmas shopping, and keeping the house taken care of. Well, I'm sure you all know, it's enough to make me wanna bang my head on a wall!!

Dana

ok, I'v printed out the official marathon course map, and I wanted to put little stickers at the sweeper points. I have a copy next to my desk at work and on my TM for the LWs. The question has to do with the first sweeper location. According to the sweeper schedule it is at 2.7 miles, at Epcot's main entrance. Well, that can't be right because the blue course is along the back stretch of WS between miles 2 and 3. Anybody remember the location from last year? Of course all you speed demons probably zoomed past and probably never noticed a sweeper bus. I'm not overly concerned about being swept at that point, but it makes me wonder if there are any other irregularities with the course map.

On another note, my TM also times out at 99:59. The first time it happened it freaked me out a little because I was worried my TM was malfunctioning. Once I figured it out I just anticipate the stop ahead of time.

Keep up the good work everyone! We will be in WDW soon!!

Dana - It is not easy to get out in the cold. Besides the obvious discomfort, your body has to work harder to overcome the cold. If it is taht cold for you, you could shave a oucple miles off of your LR. However, last year it was 34 at the start of teh full. It as the same or colder fro the half. You may want to be rpepared. :wizard: :wizard: Trust me, I know how miserable it is.

Pat - I keep forgetting. I am so with you on your paranoia! have you purchased any Zycam. If teh airbone does not keep you healthy, taking Zycam as soon as you start feeling sick will cut down recovery time. Good luck! :wizard:

WHAT? They sit there WAITING FOR YOU? OMG! :scared:

Pat, please explain. They sit there with the bus at certain points along the way and if you don't cross by there by the prescribed time they take you away on the bus, is that it?

OMG if that happens to me..they might as well put me in a hearse because I will DIE of embarrassment!!!

No, no, not after all this, ain't no sweeper gonna get me, nu uh, no way. NO WAY!

WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT!!!!

'nough said?

Just got back from the Y. I put in 4 miles around (and around) the track. It only about 30 degrees here today, so I chickened out & stayed inside!

I forgot to take a couple preventive puffs of albuterol before I left the house. And yes, I should always have my inhaler with me, but of course I didn't. After mile 1 I was feeling my lungs tighten up, so I went to all walking.
12:15
13:12
13:43
13:16
52:28

I was happy with that since miles 2-4 were all walking.

Someone asked about pepper spray. I ordered some online years ago since I walk into work in downtown Boston at 4am alone. You need to check with your state though. NH doesn't require anything to carry it. In MA you need special permission (or whatnot) from the police dept.

Judy - I also take the Gu like a shot! Who knew? :rotfl:

Judy -- No matter how much anyone said it to me last year, I still worried, but PLEASE believe me -- YOU WILL NOT BE SWEPT! You have been putting in the steps are so wayyyy ahead of the sweepers.

Of course, I owe our pace to Rhonda who kept us moving along and watched the Garmin like a hawk to make sure we stayed ahead of sweeper pace. Still not sure I'd have hustled without her. :lovestruc

Judy - ALthough I believe with all my heart that you will not be swept, if everything goes wrong race day, there is no shame in being swept. Even teh penguin did not finish his first marathon. (Keep in mind htat's why he develloped teh MfM plan.) With teh exception of the random sweeping in 05, I have heard nothing but nice things about the sweepers. I have heard that peole on bikes will warn you if you are getting close and tell you that if yuo do not pick up the pace by a certain point, you will have to get on teh bus. I must repeat, though, that YOU WILL NOT BE SWEPT.

Oh I have this terrible mental image of me running like a one-armed man (remember that movie??), constantly looking behind me like Miss Gulch is catching up with me on her bike and she has a HUGE cane to grab me and drag me off the course.... :scared:

OMG! I have TAPER MADDNESS already! :faint:

Judy you crack me up!
Don't worry...when I did my 1st WDW, I was afraid of the sweepers too...but I never saw them! :goodvibes I did a 12 MPM the 1st year with Bree BTW....

Wow, I have a lot of catching up to do. :teeth:

Judy - I'm about a minute to minute & half/mile slower than you. I'm not about to let the BUS people with their brooms touch me. I'll fight them off for you so you can run away as they get closer. Of course, they won't be anywhere near you. I plan on being a few steps in front of them. :thumbsup2

I've got a question for all of you experts and pros: Should I get a flu shot or not? I have the opportunity to get one through my work but I'm worried about it for some reason. I don't want anything to mess of my training. Any thoughts? I haven't had any problems in the past with the shots but I wasn't training for a half-marathon then. :teeth:

Stephen and I tease my Dad about this all time!! He is walking the half, but really isn't training at all. He does he long walks, but that's all the "training" he does. (I know :sad2: ) He walks about a 17:00 mile, obviously not fast enough at Disney. So Stephen and I always say that the sweeper bus is going to be chasing after him, right on his tail as he is frantically trying to stay ahead and they are going to chase him right up to the finish line and go crashing through the grand stands in the attempt to sweep him. :rotfl2:

Oh, and another thing Stephen says; we got my Mom and Dad matching shirts to wear for the marathon from www.runningbanana.com (awesome site and FANTASTIC customer service, by the way), on the front we printed 13.1 and on the back it says "got Donald?". Stephen says he's going to write "NO!" under Dad's "got Donald?" :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Don't worry about my Dad getting his feeling's hurt, he says he doesn't care if he gets swept or not. I know :sad2: :confused3 :sad2: .

Judy, Judy, Judy, I didn't mean to scare you, but yes I have seen the sweeper buses (or is it busses??) parked along the side of the road. I've never been swept, my pace is just (and I mean JUST) under the required 16mpm when you factor in pitstops. Just once I'd like to be able to stop and take a picture with one of the characters, instead of taking pics on the fly with strangers! in them....I'm glad to hear that there is some warning.....

I really don't think you have anything to worry about!! Soon you will be proudly wearing your medal. Oh, BTW, remember to wear it everywhere, and be sure to stop in at Epcot's Innoventions and do the email/picture thing - there are kiosks where you take your own picture and can email it to anyone. See my siggie for my pic from last year. It is a really cool thing to do.

Judy, Judy, Judy! I was so scared of the infamous sweeper buses last May during the Minnie. It's just natural! You will be fine. Your pace is great from what you've posted here. And I've noticed I go faster during a race than any training walk/run. Well, let's correct that. IF I took out my gazillion stops to take pis with characters, I'd be ahead of my training pace! :rotfl:

I am going to try really, really hard to beat a 3 hour half. That's what my Mom did last year & she runs. (and I am evil & want to beat her!) It's totally do-able for me, if not for the damn characters along the route! I am going to need help resisting that temptation. In this respect, I am kind of glad the half is now an out & back - less park time means less pics for me to take! ;)

I buy my pepper spray at a sporting goods store. I have to ask for it as it is always hidden in with the hunting equipment.

Judy - You won't be swept. I have images of the sweeper bus being attacked by a lime green swarm if they even tried to get close to you. I think you are going to surprise yourself.

Happy Trails!

Oh you guys! You have much more faith in me then I do. :grouphug:

Well, I just did the math, since I just so happen to have my splits from my last LR of nine miles. According to my ninth-grade math.....If last Saturday was the race, and if I did 4 more miles at the same pace...I'd be done in 2 hours 56 minutes. Now...this does not take into account pit stops and crowds. Or any other issues which I refuse to name at the moment.

So, on paper, I'm fine. It's just...that fear of the unknown....that fear of having trained for a year with this one race in mind then blowing it....that fear of coming home and telling everyone that doubted me that I didn't finish....

However, I know if I just draft off of Zebra Butt like I was planning on.... :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Disclaimer: I do realize I will be NOWHERE NEAR Kevin at any time. He'll be WAY gone by the time I'm just getting warmed up.

Zebra Butt??? :lmao: I think I strained something trying not to lol.

Judy, Judy, Judy, you crack me up. (Yes, I just had to say Judy, Judy, Judy too)

Hey everyone!

Judy - You'll do fine.

Well, I've been going over my training schedule, and since I'm now in "catch-up" mode, I've come up with the following.

12/6 - 4 miles
12/7 - 4
12/10 - 8
12/12 - 4
12/14 - 4
12/16 - 5k race (maybe)
12/17 - 9
12/19 - 4
12/21 - 4
12/24 - 10
12/26 - 4
12/28 - 4
12/31 - 6
01/03 - 3
01/06 - 1/2 mary (ME FIXED IT!) :lmao:

I figure if I can get a 10 miler in I'd feel pretty comfortable for the race.

Whatcha think? :confused3 :)
