Wk Of Dec 1 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I know I am jumping the gun here, but...

I just started training in September for the Jan 5K. I've NEVER run/jogged in my LIFE before. I'm already thinking..."What's next" When I'm done w/ the 5K. Where do I go from there?

For you seasoned Long Distance competitors. Do you think it would be too soon to attempt the 15K at the Minnie in May? I've heard that you need to have "base" miles which I really don't have. And again, i'm not that fit. I can barely do my C25K plan. Should I just keep training and gradually adding miles and start to seriously train in the fall for January 2009 half instead?

I don't want to overstress my body and then get all discouraged and give up, but I feel like I need something else to strive for...

Opinions???

Thanks guys!!!
Stacie

Stacie - OK, since you asked...

No.

No, I don't think it's too soon to attempt the 15K in May. I think you have plenty of time and if you just keep at it, you'll be as ready as any of us. :thumbsup2

Just don't follow Kristi's training plan.... :tiptoe:

I have lots and lots of drafts and revisions to training plans for a half marathon. Too bad I wasn't able to actually do most of the planned stuff this time around. Next time I am shooting for a one (plan) and done.

Afternoon teammates. Nothing to report from me from today (unless we're counting shopping as xtraining). Did 35 min. at marathon pace on Thurs. felt good--now if I can just translate that into 4hrs at the same pace life will be grand!

Christa--I think you've gotten great advice about the weather/what to wear. My legs rarely get cold either--as long as my hands and ears are covered, shorts and ss shirt will do for me. I was lucky at the LR marathon when it was in the 30s at the start, that DH wasn't running. So, right before the start I gave him all my extra layers, and warmed up in no time. Could've been the nerves of the race, or maybe the coffee I spilled on me that helped as well. Good luck this weekend--excited to hear how things go!

JenGa--Take a deep breath! You will do great!

Stacie--I also think you'd be fine. The Minnie is a great race to train for!

Okay, back to cleaning this pig sty we live in. Good luck with LR/LW and races this weekend!

I wouldn't call myself seasoned or a long distance competitor (nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night - :lmao: ) but I just have to say - NO - its not too soon to attempt the 15k in May. I started running/jogging/walking (I do a combination of the 3) in June (I did run/walk for 3 months the previous year and then quit.) before that I had never really done any running except in middle school and that wasn't very good either. I was able to finish the TOT 13k in what I consider a reasonable time (even though I wish it could have been closer to Ryan Hall's times but that is another story :rolleyes1 - 15 miles in 1:15)

So yes I think its a reasonable to goal and I find its alot easier to get out and do the training if you have an event in the not to far off future. The 2009 marathon seems like its so far away that I know that if I don't have other things lined up before then I will just get lazy and quit running again. Another big help is this group here - it gives you the courage and determination to get to the finish line!! :cheer2:

So am I reading this right? I'm not alone in the lack of training recently?

The week before Thanksgiving I was told I had a sinus infection which was why my ears would plug up during exercise (freaked me out!) that was Friday and after a brutal morning (last one) with my trainer my knee was bugging me so I took the days remaining off till Thanksgiving's 4 Mile race which we did in 1 hour 1 minute.

Day after Thanksgiving I posted my race report and probably within 4 hours of that I was showing signs of a virus and had a temp of a 104. Laid me low for the weekend, no eating. The week following was all about getting back on my feet.

Finally after about 2 weeks of no training and my only exercise being the 4 mile race I made it back to the gym this past Tuesday and go figure I RAN my 1st solid MILE!

Back up to the ToT weekend when I talked to Susie (escape) and her running buddy Cindy. Cindy had mentioned that for her the first 10 minutes of running was always tougher and then everything balanced out. Days after getting home from ToT I managed to run for 10 minutes non stop thought I was going to die but I did and then I did it again the next day. Woohoo.

I don't think I had run since those 2 days like that until this past Tuesday when I managed to run 1 mile at a 12:46 pace on the treadmill at a 2% incline. OMG! Thought I was going to die! LMBO You all will totally understand that I was within 0.05 of a full mile and my lungs felt like their were going to explode, my heart felt like a cartoon character and I never thought those 0.05 would be over but no way was I stopping when i was THAT close. i didn't care how much the stitch in my side hurt i was doing the FULL mile.

I dragged my tush to the gym on Thursday to do the circuit (3 sets) and let me tell you I plan on hitting the gym in the future even if I'm on death's door because I am hurting today where I had not been before. Today I managed to do another solid mile of running but at a 13:20 pace & 2% incline. The 13:20 pace was easier. I wasn't dying as bad at the end and actually was able to run again after a bit of a breather.

all in all a good week of training considering I've been in a near panic over the fast approaching Jan 13th.

Happy training & holdiays too all :)

BTW... can we just fast forward to Jan 14th where we've all successfully completed our races and are wearing our medals and all I have to worry about is speeding up for the Minnie? :lmao:

I'm going to be a basket case before Jan 1st :scared:

Judy My Dear

Yes, today is Pearl Harbor day. When you plan your visit to the Arizona Memorial, let us know, we'll gladly come too.

Martha and I were there in May of 2004 (I've had Lesley there since then as well). To step onto the structure and look into the tomb of 1000 very young Americans is overwhelming. The most amazing part to me was a small marble block to the left of the wall listing the sailors killed in the attack. This block listed the names of survivors, who upon passing had their remains cremated and returned to the Arizona by divers so they could lie with their shipmates.

I felt it was appropriate to take off my hat as a gesture to the dead, and a ranger from the park service saw this and came over to me.

The flag goes up and back down every hour over the Arizona, and he asked if I would like to perform the honors. I graciously accepted his offer, and did my best to run the colors up, back down, and then fold them with the ranger.

All in all, a most memorable first visit to the USS Arizona.

Craig

These pictures were taken from my lanai when I was stationed in Hawaii (Hickam AFB). Spent many an hour sitting and watching the coming and going Navy vessels.

I made a couple of trips to the memorial. A moving experience each and every time.

I have put in tons of overtime at work this week - but just handed in a big project  - so I have not run at all. I'll be back at it this weekend though!

I'm meditating here in front of the computer and TV tonight. Meditating and WISHing for snowbegone! Getting up kinda early so I can get in the first set of steps. Then it's MRI then the rest of the weekend frenzy. I am likely facing an endless TM journey. Sigh.

Stacie, you will do fine. Just keep plugging away.

NEBill, you know those revisions...keep them. It happens all the time.

Diane, no you'll miss taper madness if you fast forward!

NO comment on our WISH Team members who think they are built oddly. Hmmm.

Vic

Thanks for the great photos of Pearl. You have been and lived in so many interesting places and seen so many amazing things. Unfortunately I only see you in the crazy busy times before races and the like. Please, please promise me we can sit down in January, perhaps with the other > 50 males of the club, and as long as you keep the stories coming I will keep putting down my credit card.

I arrive on Wednesday, January 9 in the mid afternoon, I don't leave until Thursday, January 17, and I'm staying at the Boardwalk Villas. Let's make sure we find some quiet time to talk about the journey's we've made in our, dear god, half century of living.

Stephanie

Thanks for the kind offer. As a general rule, I never run in the rain. I wish you well this weekend. Try and run between the raindrops!

The race is 37 days from today, and I think I'm almost ready, both physically and mentally. I've got 2 more long efforts, and my body is holding together pretty well. As always, I'm not sure about those really long training efforts. I love doing 6-10 hard miles, but when I get past 10 my mind and body begin to play tricks on me. Sadly I'll be on that stupid treadmill Sunday, snow and ice predicted, so I need to set the speed on something I can maintain, and spend, say 190 minutes on the thing. Perhaps I'll start when the Pats-Steelers game starts, and by the time I'm done it should be done as well.

I need to move to Santa Barbara. Good running weather every day of the year. I just need my salary doubled or tripled so I could afford it.

And best of all . . . my teaching sessions for the semester ARE OVER  . Just final exams and grading at the College/Sloan, and I'm on break. Is this a great country or what?

Craig

Hello All!

I've been absent for a while and have not caught up on posts yet.

20 miles today....on a treadmill! :scared: (as it was 18 degrees and the roads are lousy with black ice.)

I arrived home from the gym, walked out behind my house barefoot and in shorts, and sat down in 5 inches of snow and buried my legs and feet for 15 minutes. After initial screaming, which alarmed the neighborhood kids sledding in our backyard, it wasn't bad. (Buried in snow with shorts didn't faze the kids; I'm known as the Dad who's a little "off" :rolleyes1 )

Anyhow, I am so glad I have only one more LR (Dec. 21). Take care all and happy training!

Good evening all. :surfweb:

I haven't even been lurking as I started a new job on Monday and, to be honest, I felt like I was sinking for a couple days. Today I feel like I'm swimming so I'm happy about that.

The calf that I hurt 10 days ago is slowly healing. I hope to run 40 minutes tomorrow and may 60 on Sunday. Considering the weather report is calling for rain, sleet, snow, ice, and, as far as I know, pestilence and plague, I'll be on the TM. Lovely.

Vic: the photos are lovely. You've been so many places.

SilverE: yowser! You've gone beyond an ice bath to a snow bath!! You're a better man than I, Gunga Din!!!

Calcio: you'll knock 'em dead at the race. I, on the other hand, may not make it considering my injury. It's depressing.....

Lily: so sorry to hear you've got too much snow for an outdoor workout. Hope the MRI goes well.

DianeL: sorry to hear of all the sickness keeping you from training. I'm right there with you!!!!

nepatsfan Bill: how are ya? Hope the back is doing OK.

windwalker Panda: how are ya, dude!

Good training over the weekend everyone!!!!

My 5k tonight was a disaster, though I thank God I was not DLF! Take my advice. You cannot have only coffee for breakfast, no lunch until a green salad and canned chicken breast at 4:30, walk 14 blocks in heels to and from court in the snow/sleet and run a 5k that starts at 6:45 when it is 32 degrees. Repeat after me. UGLY! BTW, if this race had not been for Special Olympics, I definitely would have DNS'ed. Oh, and I had the most God-awful charlie horses in my feet and calves when we got back to the car. What?????

TM tomorrow. Hoping for at least 8 miles each session for 2 sessions this weekend. That is the only way I'll get the miles in. Not really the way I want to do it, but it will have to do.

Bill - so sorry about January! We'll miss you but at least you wont' be bored!

Good luck to everyone on their LRs this weekend! Even though I've been only lurking, my teammates are keeping me inspired and motivated and moving.

Good Morning Everyone -

I woke up to near perfect running weather and still had to do the "what do I wear" dance all over the house. I am layered so I stay warm as I put out the water and powerade and then the poor TNTers will get to watch this old lady strip down to her racing shorts.

I am feeling for my snow bound WISH friends. I can not imagine trying to function in that kind of weather much less trying to train! Good Luck on your LRs and stay safe! NO injuries today.

SilverE - Glad you opted out of the black ice! Scary that. As for the neighbors kids, well it kind of goes with the whole training for Goofy. Congrats on getting the 20 in on a treadmill. I think every mile over 5 miles on a treadmill should count double!

Happy trails!
Cecilia

Morning all! My LR is tomorrow, so nothing to report from here. Still looks like rain for me tomorrow. I don't mind a little rain, as i've run 16 before in the rain, but I might have to draw the line at a driving rain storm. But at least it will be warm. So, I plan on getting up early and going as far as I can before the rain starts--maybe I'll be lucky like last week and the rain will hold off until the afternoon.

SilverE--Wow 20 on the TM! You da man!

Martha--glad to hear that the injury is improving. Just take care of yourself and the WISHers will get you to that finish line!

Craig--much luck to you tomorrow with the TM LR. Great news that the semester is drawing to a close; I'm sure my father is doing the same happy dance. After 30 years teaching at the collegiate level, finals can't come soon enough for him. Oh, and Scott and I will be at BWV as well--would love to grab a beverage with you and your wife to catch up!

20 miles on a treadmill!?! :scared1:
That is impressive.

OK, so I'm just now starting to make plans for our WDW NYE trip - trying to make plans around these ADRs I made a million years ago. :sad2:

Looks like I'll be able to squeeze in two runs on the WL/FW trail in the morning, but one night I think I'm gonna have to get on the treadmill there. I have never run on a treadmill before, only walked. Am I gonna kill myself? :confused3
It will probably take me an hour just to figure it out. :lmao:

Sounds like a plan! We're arriving on the 10 and departing on the 15th, maybe the 16th. I'm sure we can find the time.

These are from one of my travels while stationed in Germany (circa 1988)

Low level in the French Pyrennes mountains. We had a plexiglas bubble in the forward overhead escape hatch. Looking straight ahead and to the rear.

These are French Mirage 2000s. We were working with them for air intercept training. We did pretty well until they jumped us with 5.

Take care. :)

Vic,

All I can say is WOW!

I think this would be the only time I wish I were a +50 year old male, just so I could hear the stories too.

This is a Panda without a packet:

Erica and I are off to Gattlinburg in the morning. Yes sports fans a break from the foolishness of packetless Panda. However if he hoel has internet...

We are hoping for good weather so we can get in a 22 miler while we are there, then we can do one more long walk the following week and start the taper sanity.

Have a super weekend team.

Wow Wow! What great shots. I suspect you did enough flying for a lifetime, but I really enjoy the little flying I've done in non-airline non-jet aircraft.

So the Mirages can do about Mach 2 and your C-130 would cruise at, what, 200 knots? That must have been pretty cool. Perhaps my favorite part of Soarin' is in the high desert when the F-16's come up and roar off. Your Pyrennes shots are your real life adventure of the same thing.

Colleen

I can assure you that you don't want to be an > 50 male. Without going into details, pretty much nothing works they way it once did. You youngsters have it better in every way. But of course, my child is out of College and gainfully employed. You'll be in the same situation in, what, 2020  ?
