Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Mel – so glad your foot is doing better. I cannot imagine training in your weather conditions. You really inspire me! :goodvibes:

Judy – Hoping Mist gets to stay with you, sweetie! I can't imagine a better Mom for her.

Pungodingy – :welcome: So glad to have you join us!

Kathy – So great to see you here. Awesome distance in that time on the bike! I have to echo the sentiments about what an amazing Mom you are. Lynne and Erin are truly a testament to the love and support you have poured into raising two amazing young women. Wanna take over with my DDalmost18? :lmao:

Dave – Have a great time tonight! Will be thinking of you and your princesses!

Felicia – Sorry we won’t see you at DL, but we’ll all celebrate after the Full is done! :thumbsup2

Krista – I am so proud of you for not bailing on your run! That is awesome, kiddo! :cheer2: Oh, and I know what you mean about those Pittsburgh hills. I had a hard time walking them, though I’d like to think I could manage that at this point. But I had no idea how many hills there were out there before I met DH.

Last night was a scheduled rest night and I took full advantage of it, leaving work early-ish (around 6:15) and NOT going to the gym. I felt like I had 2 bonus hours added to my life, and even though it was a gorgeous evening and I craved a walk outside I forced myself to make myself a nice dinner and relax in front of the TV with a good book. I have convinced myself that carrying a very heavy litigation bag for 10+ blocks yesterday should count as cross-training. :rotfl: And I definitely am giving myself credit for ordering a dry salad w/grilled chicken at the amazing italian restaurant where I had a business lunch. Everyone was ordering wine and having meals like saltimbucca and gnocchi pesto and veal parm and I still don't know how I resisted! Just glad I didn't have to go earn a dozen activity points to cover a splurge!

The plan calls for 8 miles this Saturday, but I may do them tonight because we will be away all weekend. I am still hoping to get in a walk on Saturday a.m. but it will be much shorter (though probably at a quicker pace – my aunt really “books” :cool1: )

DH saw his shoes on sale yesterday at the roadrunnersports website (we had joined their VIP club for free shipping and 10% off all orders) and I called to order them for him and found they were down to the very last 2 pairs in his size. So, I ordered both. While I was on the phone, the guy recommended for me the new Brooks Ariel motion control in an extra wide width that is coming out on 9/30 and for which they are taking pre-orders. I think I saved ~$35 by pre-ordering them and am really excited to try a new shoe that is considerably lighter than what I have been wearing. I still have the brand new pair of my new balance 1122 that I ordered from that shoe warehouse and will start breaking them in for DL but was concerned about what to wear for the January full. If the Ariel works for me, I will be so psyched.

I apologize for the total drive-by, but I did promise you guys I'd check in before I took off for my trip.

The only thing that got me out of bed this morning for the treadmill was the promise of French Toast Loaf as my reward. It was my best one to date and was well worth the effort. My kids still think we're celebrating 100 days until the WDW trip.

Damn those terrorists!! :furious: Please send up a little prayer for safe travels. I will admit to being a little frightened to fly today. If it was just me traveling for business I wouldn't mind, but possibly exposing my children to danger is upsetting me. However, they say today will be one of the safest days to fly since the terror alert is so high.

Happy training to all this weekend and best of luck to anyone with races scheduled. I will not be taking my laptop on vacation with me, so I won't be checking in until next Wednesday.

Have a safe trip & get to your airport extra, extra early. Put all your 'liquids' in your checked bags. And I agree - today is going to be one of the most safe days for flying!

Have a fabulous time!

Ok, I keep not having the time to catch up with everyone. And then I don't post, since I feel like I should catch up. Thus, my vicious cycle!

So, I am going to start fresh - here's my 4.5 mile wog from yesterday at the up at the lake (yes, I played hooky from work!):
13:00
13:20
13:12
12:59
6:43
59:16

Judy - I did read your story about the running shoes. Definately go to a running store! I have always felt welcome at the store near me, and I am not what one would think to be a 'runner!'

Cam - Zack kind of stubbed my toe with the funny nail yesterday and it hurt so bad! I am going to call the doctor and see if he can take a look at it. I am actually kind of hoping he'll take it off. Who woulda thunk I'd be asking for that? :lmao: Awesome job eating well at that luncheon. I have no will power when it comes to something like that.

There's a 5k in manchester tonight. I'm not sure they take same day registrations. If they do, I might go. I am scheduled to do 3 miles today anyway. I would feel more comfortable if I knew there were other Penguins that participate. I can't find a min. pace requirement on the brochure...

Thanks, Kristi!
About the toe-- Sunday night, I soaked my feet for about an hour and then filed and clipped those toe nails down almost to non-existent; they feel so much better now. I hope you can find a resolution.

About your race tonight -- we have a website called races2run.com where they list all the races in this area and I always can check the results from last year to see if there were people slower than me. But what I am finding is that every single event I do has more and more walkers in them. No kidding. It is so exciting to see more people getting out and getting exercise. Even more importantly, it means there are potentially more people behind me at the finish! ;) You should do the race and have fun. Dont' worry about how anyone else does, just have a great time! :cool1:

Sara -- Have a great time. Sending you pixiedust: for a stress-free flight.

Sara, have a great trip and I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible for you in the airports.

Judy, hope all goes well with Mist! :wizard:

Pung, welcome! :welcome: You are on the right track ordering that book, It is very motivational.

Did anyone else notice the Disney half-marathon is now closed???

I finally got out of bed early yesterday and ran 12 miles outside at 5 a.m. and guess what?? I loved it! Apart from the pain of getting up at 4:45, the run was actually very enjoyable. :Pinkbounc Does anyone else think they are running so much faster than they actually are when it is dark outside? I thought I was really blazing a trail and then looked at my Garmin and it said 11:15 m/m??? I was sure it was a 9:30 minute mile, but oh no. In fact, I was sure there was something wrong with my Garmin. I didn't mind because the 12 miles were great and I felt great the entire day. :sunny: I then got up this morning at 6 a.m. and ran another 6 miles before DH went off to work. It is so much more enjoyable running at 70 F then at 93 F  .

Hi everyone! :grouphug:

Pungodingy! :welcome: I hope you find the support here you'll need. Good Luck with the training. Oh yes, hold on to the friend that referred you here... he/she knows what they're talking about. :dance3:

Craig ~ Thanks for the note about the college drop off experience. I am sure it will be bitter sweet for me and even tougher for Cam.

I went out for a neighborhood run last night and worked hard. I ran a total of 5.28 miles in 50:21. I ran the entire way with no breaks. The course is what I would consider very hilly. (Just ask Cam) * Major hill.

Here are my per mile splits:

9:24
9:03
9:56*
9:44
9:22

Tonight I am volunteering with DS's Cross Country Team for the second time this week. I run with the boys and bring up the rear coaching the slower boys and keeping them on course. Of course, DS is away at camp in NY and missing pre-season practices, but at least I am helping out in his absence.

Have a great day everyone! :cool1:

I'd been traveling for work the past week plus, so I'd only been getting in short 3 or 4 miles runs. Went for a LR this morning. I hoped to run 13, but only ran 10 and walked 3. It started getting pretty hot. Some days, the miles seem to pass quickly, and some days they don't. Today, the first 6 miles seemed easy, but then after about 8, it seemed like I was fighting it. At 10, I figured I got in a good run, and I hadn't done a LR for about 2 weeks, so maybe I shouldn't push it. (My last LR was 14 miles on a TM, so this 10 mile run was my longest run outside.)

Colleen - congrats on the 12 miler. I couldn't imagine getting up at 5am to run. Though I may have to do that for my long runs here soon, it is just getting too hard to run once the sun gets going around here. We have a rail-trail here that is like 14 miles one direction, but I get so nervous about going out there by myself before the sun is up.

I kind of bailed on my 30 min run today. Someone smack me!! OK, where's the Evil Queen (Christa) when I need her!! I am thinking that I might go out and run this evening after DH gets home. We'll see though, I hate this Florida Heat. I have a long run of 6 miles on Saturday, which is like "nothing" compared to what some of you are running, but after taking those two weeks off being sick 6 miles really feels like ALOT. "O" well, I'll get through it. Although, I may need some smacking from you guys.

Whew! I’m glad that you’ve all kept up with it.

We are all making it and together we are doing it. I thank you for being here to help me this week. I can’t possibly respond to everyone, I miss our MIA Team members, and hope you are getting in those steps.

Welcome! MrsTrx! Don’t be shy, jump in here we look forward to your posts!

Judy, sorry about those shoes. If it would do any good I think we should all join you for a “jog” though those stores. I love my running store. They even order what I want if I ask them. They are fantastic. Hope you get great treatment at your local store. Sorry about the Mist. Hope she doesn’t have to go back.

Sunny, I’ve got my Goofy sleeveless from CafePress and love wearing it even if it is cotton (also got some other stuff too). Thanks. Thinking of you.

Heel blisters, pretty much what Craig said. Only for me, I put the white sport tape directly on my blister, 2 layers of tape…ouch to remove, but ahhh to run. Love the sport tape, it doesn’t cause too much of an “adjustment” to the fit of my shoe. I’m going to try to remember to add Craig’s suggestion. Sounds like the right way.

Glad Matt is better and on the mend. He’s young and thankfully kids are made of rubber so they bounce back sooner.

Denny, love the pups in your siggy. Glad you’ve found a way to keep up with the training.

Dave, glad those shins are feeling better. Please keep it easy on them during the “official training” phase so you don’t blow them out. Your current training with pool work seems to be working. You’ve build in a good time buffer and all you need to do now is get the LR endurance as the training builds to that. You will do it!

Kevin, are you putting in the steps?

I’m in for a WISH Team Chat whenever we decide. It might be fun! There are 3 rooms to choose so we can use any of them.

I’ve been listening to the DIS Radio and loving every minute. It is really getting me into the mood.

Now, I’ve got great news. (It doesn’t have anything about saving a lot of money on my car insurance.) We saved money on our airline ticket for October after I noticed that horrible price we paid to get there finally came down to “normal.” We called last night and made adjustments and now have air tickets for January AND a place to stay! We (DH and I) are going. I am gonna be at the start with all my WISH Team!

GOOD LUCK TO THE CHICAGO TEAM THIS WEEKEND!
Have a great event and let me know all about it.

Colleen - Congrats on the 12 miles! I understand about it being easier w/out the sun up!

Howard - All I can say is that you are amazing :thumbsup2 !

Judy - :wizard: for your little horse! I can E.Q. on them too! :furious: My DDs LOVE horses. They draw them, have shirts with them on it, play like they are riding a horse and play like they are horses. I show them your horse pics when you post them. They think it is so cool that you help horses that have been hurt by other people.

Dana - Girl! I totaly understand on bailing every once in a while.

Pungodingy - A great big :welcome: ! You will LOVE this group! Good luck on your training....it is a wonderful adventure!

My LR tomorrow - We will start our LR tomorrow at 5:30 - Downtown Charlotte @ the MAC. (Some of you NC people may know where I am talking about) Bree is bringing us COLD gatorade at the 1/2 way point and @ the end! :cool1: :cheer2:  :cloud9: How sad to get so excited about COLD gatorade. Bree looks very cute preg! She is starting her 3rd trimester (SP?). I may park at the YMCA a mile away so I get 2 extra miles in...but maybe not. :goodvibes

I have tons of people to catch up with, but just wan to pop in with this.

Woo hoo for Lily!!!!!! So glad you'll be joining us!!!!!!!

Hello all!!

Judy-- Hope all goes well with Mist!

Pungo-- :welcome: Glad to see you here!! What a great goal you've decided on! :thumbsup2 I highly recommend Marathoning for Mortals-- it's a great read and very informative. What are you currently doing in terms of training? Are you shooting for 2007 or 2008?

Dave-- Good luck with the race!

Sara-- I hear you. Wishing you safe travels....

Training this week so far has been very hit or miss for a couple of reasons. First, I am the king of summer colds... I swear not a summer has gone by in the past 10 years where I have not gotten one. Well, lo and behold, I got my summer cold. (Sigh) I'm on the mend but it's been tough to get outside and get moving. Secondly, I didn't realize how tough it is to run without my beloved Garmin.

I did a couple miles on the tradmill Tuesday and then this morning went out for a nice 3 miler (3r/2w). As I ran up the driveway, the mail carrier was waiting at the door with.... MY GARMIN!!  Thank goodness! I have 3 miles tomorrow and 5 Saturday and I really, really wanted it.

I think that's about all for now--
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Here is my weekly catch up. LOL Hopefully I won’t miss anyone.

Kristi – Great photo of you with the GooGoo Dolls! Yeah, lawn seats aren’t bad (except for when we get caught in the rain :lmao: ). We go for the quantity of the number of concerts we can go to in the year instead of the quality of the seats. :lmao: I printed out your photo to show one of my friends. She is “in love” with Johnny, along with Jon BonJovi & Joe Perry. LOL Good Luck if you decide to do the 5k tonight!
GoofyGuy – I saw where you have done the Philadelphia Distance Run 11 times & it is your favorite race. That is good to know that it is a good race. John(DH) & I (& possibly Sean(DS20) will be doing that race this year. We will be at the back of the pack mostly walking with some running.
Kindergarten Parents – Savor every moment of it. The years will really fly by from now on.
Carrie – We received our shirts. I LOVE them! Thank you for all your work on the ordering & shipping. And thank you to everyone that helped to create such a GREAT Team Shirt!
Matt – Congratulations to you and DW on the Bushwacker 5k! Awesome times! :thumbsup2
Dana – Glad your feeling better & able to now get back to putting in your steps
Lily – Your WISH team uniform photos are GREAT! :thumbsup2
Mel – Your pace & running intervals have really improved. That is GREAT! :woohoo:
Kelley – I was sorry to read about your nephew, but glad that he is now doing better. pixiedust:
Tiff – Great time on your LR. Sorry about your bike crash, glad it wasn’t worse.
Kevin – Wow! You are very organized, getting everything ready to start training.
Krista – Congratulations on your 5k finish. Awesome time! :woohoo:
Terri – Glad your WISH shirt & socks helped improve your r/w. I’m hoping they do the same for me this week.
Dave – Glad to hear your legs are continuing to improve. You are certainly an inspiration! Nice deal on the Halloween costumes. Good Luck to you and DD’s on your races tonight!
Judy – Sorry you had a bad experience running shoe shopping. pixiedust: that everything works out with Mist.
Cecilia & Pungodingy – :welcome:
Bekah – Congratulations on your LR! :thumbsup2
Jen – Hope your back is feeling better. pixiedust:
Jodi – Great job on the 5k You are one busy person. :thumbsup2
Cam – Congratulations on eating healthy when everyone around you wasn’t! :woohoo:
Sara – Have a GREAT trip!
Howard – WOW, with everything you do, you still have time to volunteer with your DS’s Cross Country Team. :thumbsup2
Good Luck to everyone doing the Chicago ½ Marathon this weekend!

As for me….I haven’t gotten any steps in since Sunday. Tonight I’m going to do almost 4 miles on the boards. Sunday is our Batsto Pig Iron 5k.

Everyone enjoy your weekend!

Hey all. This is a really quicky post from me as I haven't had time to play on here. I have a question...

Why do you put vaseline on the tape after you tape the blister?

I am no longer in fear of the sweepers, now I am in fear of blisters.

Judy - If you order one of those black and green packs, let me know how they fit and how you like it. They look good to me and I may order one.

My internet at home has been out this week, so I just haven't had time to play as much as I would like. I got the room cleaned up tho!!! I have my running group tonight and have been a major running slacker. I ran last Thurs., Sunday and then X-trained on Tuesday. That surely isn't going to cut it! My life just turned super crazy hectic and I needed to breathe.

Have a great evening all!

OMG, Karen! Please, please tell me you were joking that you printed hat picture to show someone! I am just going to die of embarassment right now. My hair went all crazy in the humidity! I thought that was my cute outfit - doesn't look so cute in the pic. Ack!!! Well, you tell this friend that Johnny is my boyfriend, but she can steal Jon Bon Jovi from my Mom! :rotfl: FYI - they published more tour dates for this fall. They are coming back to New England - watch out! Joe Perry is a very good choice too. I am on a mission with him & Steven Tyler. They both have houses on Lake Sunapee & I am the only family member not to have seen them around town! :furious: In fact, that is why I wogged a new way that weekend the coyote came out of the woods in front of me - I was going down the road towards Steven's house hoping he might pass me on his motorcycle. I am hopeless!

Anywho - just back from the doctor about my pesky toenail. Apparently it is worse than I thought. He wants me to see a podiatrist asap to have it looked at & removed. He thinks there may be an infection (sorry if it's TMI). I just want it off! :teeth: Cam - I'll let you know what they say since you seem to have a similar issue.

I didn't go to the 5k tonight. I never would have made it by the time I got out of the doctor's office. So, my Mom is coming over to do 3 miles with me. Last year, I was the couch potato while she was out there constantly training for her Donald. Now, I am the one pushing her since she hasn't been running lately. No race = no threat = no exercise! And it's too late to try to twist her arm into signing up for Donald again.

Ok, :woohoo: :dancer: party: :jumping1: I can hardly keep myself composed because we leave for the World tomorrow. I plan on getting up early, banging out my 16 miler and then packing the pup away for doggie dayschool and then off to the airport. I anticipate a long wait at the airport but that is fine by me as long as I know where I am headed to.

Kareneast, you will love the Philadelphia Distance Run (PDR). The course is a great mix of city streets, Fairmont park along the river and great support. I will probably be in the second corral - if last year is an indication - because I am going for a sub 1:40 race. Good luck.

See you all in two weeks. pixiedust: to all those in need. Great running/walking/wogging to all those training and I will be sure to tell Mickey and the gang you all said hello and miss them.

Pungo Welcome :grouphug: I agree w/Solotraveler, Marathoning for Mortals is a great book and learning tool. Good luck

Lily How is Liz? Please tell her that I said "hi" :wave2:

Rode the bike for 15 miles today, then hit the jacuzzi....my poor bones. lol :rotfl:
