Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey all, I am hoping to get to the gym at lunch and do some cross training. I am laying low on running for a couple if days until my back feels better. I have my group run on Thursday and I don't want to be in pain.

Krista - I used my inhaler twice so far. The first time with my group last thursday on an outdoor run. I could tell a difference tho I still was short of breathe. Then I used it again on Sunday for an indoor run, same thing. Now I have a cold, so I am not sure if opening my lungs did that or I just picked up a bug.

To all the Kindergarten moms... my oldest is starting this year. We leave for Disneyland on August 19th, get back on August 26 and she starts school August 31. My baby is growing up. She was in pre-school for two years because she is an October baby and wasn't old enough to start k-garten last year (WI rules). So I am somewhat prepared, yet the thought of her being in real school does terrify me a little. Does this mean I can't cuddle her anymore????

Dave - Have you eaten at Ohana's yet? If not, I am sure you will enjoy it. It is one of my favorite places, tho I like to go on vacation to eat!!!!

Boy how quickly things change. Just last week I was on the verge of a nervous beakdown, with screaming kids all day and never really getting much of a break from them. I actually broke down crying to DH telling him that if I didn't get a weekend without kids soon that I was seriously going to lose it. I even told him that if raising these kids were a "real" job that I would have quit by now. Today I sit here bored off my keister. This is Michael's first full day of school. There's no one to talk to, the baby has been taking a nap for 45 minutes now. I don't think the house has ever been this quiet. Looks like I got what I asked for, huh?

Just so everyone can see.... Here are some pics of my lil' man on his first day of school yesterday.

After we dropped him off at school today me and the little one went for a 30 min run. Goodness it gets hot fast lately. Thank goodness I can start my long runs at 6:30am.

Sunny - I saw the Scream Team Shirts you had for the kids. They are aboslutely adorable. I was just REALLY hoping for something in the DIS Green instead of white. I will probably end up having to find a DIS green shirt in their sizes and iron the transfer on myself.

Dana

Greetings all. :sunny: This morning I came into work and did "real" work first, then I checked the Boards. I thought I'd try something different for a change. :lmao:

I did my usual 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1% this morning. It felt good. Easy actually, after hitting the pavement on Sunday. Kevin has inspired me to work on a training plan, so I am formulating that now. Right after I make dinner reservations at Boma for the 13th of Sept. As you can see, my "real" work has come to a grinding halt. :teeth:

I got my waist pack last night. It doesn't "sit" well on my booty. Perhaps because there is already so much there. I think I'll send it back and get one that sits at the small of your back, I think like Dave just ordered.

BTW, Charlie wanted to know why I was wearing a "holster" to make dinner last night. :rotfl2:

Christa - Great picture! Personally, I'm looking forward to the fall. Enough of this HHH stuff! My God I can't imagine anyone thinking you aren't a runner! You're like the most athletic person I've never met! Thank you for the offer of unleashing the E.Q. Sunny said I can use my I.C. since we get along so well. I know, really, I'm fat and a woman. I guess to some people I'm invisible!

Jen - I'm going to some running stores this weekend. Enough of the Mall Dolts! And I do know EXACTLY where you mean that you have pain. I have some cream I got from my chiropractor. It's something like Icy Hot, but it's not that. It works great! I usually rub some of that on there and by morning it is gone. Hope something works for you. More massages from DH sounds like a good plan!

Sunny - OMG you make me LOL! "A recent conversation between you and... you" HA HA HA HA! Well, you know, the thing is, nobody else listens to me, KWIM? So I do have these conversations with myself. Plus, I sit in an office all day, basically in solitary confinement.... How are you feeling today? Are you sick of me asking that yet?

Dave - No, I didn't get to the runner store. I probably won't until this weekend. Charlie is going on a dive trip on Saturday so I will go out in the afternoon and hit up a couple of places.

Jodi - Holy cow! You were booking! Congratulations!

Tiff - Thanks for the shoe buying advice. I am off to better places this weekend.

Carrie - OMG I think I might have slapped Skippy! BTW my shirt is hanging on the wall in our bedroom so when I open my eyes in the morning I see it first thing. :goodvibes

Krista - Thanks! I know, America's youth. Oy! Your an at 9:00pm!?? Geez, I'm in bed by that time! Is that a new little picture of Hines?? How cuuute!

Sara - OMG I'm so excited for you! Pictures! We'll need pictures! As soon as you get back! :boat:

Dana - Oh how cuuuute! Thanks for sharing the pictures! You must be so proud of him! :cloud9:

Jen-NO, that does not mean you cant cuddle them anymore! Seth tries to run from me but I bribe him for a little cuddle time every once in a while :goodvibes

Dana-What a cutie!

Sara-I thought I would break down since it was my baby & all, but I did better yesterday than when Parker went to kindergarten. I think its because I'm very familiar with the school now & when Parker started I was going from a preschool of 100 to an elementary school with 1200+ kids. I almost lost it when I picked him up though. He looked so grown up standing in car line with brother :guilty: Have a great time on your trip!

Carrie- I had completely forgotten about that. What a good memory!

KelNottAt-I am so glad your nephew is getting better!

Well my nails are all pretty. I didnt let them "shave" the dead skin off , it took twice me explaining why for her to not want to do it. Big language barrier. I swear she told me she had a 5 month old & a 2 week old ? Then we went to Ruby Tuesday's for the soup & salad.

Training did not go so good today. I felt great, got out there early enough. Well my new shoes dont agree with my WISH socks (have worn both separately & was fine) and after 1.6 miles got a big blister on my heal. Tried to come in, change socks, add band aid (which does not stick to sweaty skin BTW) and went back out. No good. I was afraid I would make it even bigger so I bagged it & will go for a bike ride tonight. I have 8 miles to do this weekend. I have no time for a blister :furious:

:guilty: Sorry the WISH socks are not agreeing with your new shoes Tiff. :guilty: I must admit I've been getting some blisters myself on my recent runs. I figure I just need to build up some calluses though since I haven't run outdoors in so long.

Well after lurking most of the time keeping up with everyone, I figured that I should start posting a little more often. So I will make that attempt now, seeing how fast everything goes at times I don't know how well that will hold up though. Perhaps DW (crzy4pooh-Lynnda) will be better at this since DS is about to start preschool again and she will have nothing else to do ;) :teeth:

Training is going but the heat and humidity are going to be the end of me if it doesn't get better soon. Last nights run was ~5 miles at about an 11:20 pace. Barring any major setbacks, I should be ready for the DL half.

Hopefully tonight I can get a little walk in but those get interesting when the dog and DS both want to go. I somehow get pulled in two directions...

GIRL! You are not invisible and the pics I have seen of you...you are not fat! You are beautiful! YOU ARE WOMAN...HEAR YOU ROAR! Just to let you know too...I have lost about 30 lbs since the Goofy. My pics in my Tri suit put me over the edge.
About the waistpack...Good luck on finding one...you can also get those at a running store. There you can try it out. I got one I love, but I thought it was scraping up my back. I have a nasty scab on my lower back, but I found out that it is my shorts...I don't know what to do. (I have had this problem and the scrape for a long time...like March...) I have tried everything.
About the heat - I think we all will be pleased when we see how easy walks and runs are with cooler weather...I always get faster as the weather cools down.

Hey whaddabout the Kindergarten dads too?

No, I have never been to O'hana's, and I'm getting really excited hearing everyone talk about it here. Sounds like it will be a fun place to celebrate the marathon as well as let the princesses princess: princess: play.

Ohhhh Sorry Dave, I didn't realize you were a kindy dad. Is your youngest starting??? My princess is turning into a diva. I am not too keen on that!!!!

Judy, you are so not a fat woman. When I started running, I was fat, but have since lost 30 pounds with another 40 to lose. But we are doing it and that is all that counts. No little 18 year old doof is going to lay judgement on me. Now tell him to give you your shoes!!!!!

I just spent the whole evening packing up the back end of my van with garage sale stuff for MIL. Then I found 2 full bins of stuff that won't fit. Guess they have to wait till next year. We leave for DL in 10 days, so I hope we sell lots!!!!

Jen - sorry about the back pain. I've pulled muscles in my back before and they can be very painful. :sad2:

Judy - Bummer about dealing with ignorant salespeople. Don't let them get to you. WE know you're a runner. The heck with the rest of them.

DAve - :thumbsup2 for a great workout.

Jodi - don't be too hard on the race organizers. Sometimes they have to go through a race to see what they need to do differently next time. They'll think they have everything covered, but until they actually put everything in action, they don't really know how it all will work.

Kelley
- Glad Matt is doing better. See, a little :wizard: goes a long way! :teeth:

Carrie - I had the same problem on Saturday. My legs felt DEAD! I haven't been "overworking" so I didn't think they should feel so heavy. Luckily they felt better on my Sunday run.

Krista - I like the idea of a pacing team, too, but would be afraid I'd hold somebody back. I'm not a social runner, either. CAn't offer to run with you, since you're way faster than me.

Dana - Your little guy is adorable! :)

Christa - Have you tried putting some body glide on the spot where the rubbing occurs? That might help avoid any skin irritations.

Sunny
- Hang in there. I'm keeping you in my prayers. :grouphug:

Nothing to report for me today. It was an off day and except for a short walk, I treated it as such. :)

Terri

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

30 min SWOG last night. My legs are getting better and better. I've decreased the motrin I've been taking, and I didn't even need to ice them last night. Whoo hoo, I'm thinking I'm going to be near 100% when full training mode starts. Plus, I'm really getting a routine going for my training.

Ooooh, I have to let everyone know about my Disney bargain I found yesterday. Because I spent $50 over July 4th, Disneyshopping.com sent me a $25 gift card/code that I could use until August 20th. Disneyshopping.com is having a sale for 20% off, I got another 20% off Halloween costumes using my Disney Visa, and they were having a 1 day sale of $5 off all kids costumes. So my princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, picked out their Halloween costumes last night. They got the Lucy and Susan (from Narnia) costumes, and it only cost $17 (~$25 with shipping). Can you believe it - new Disney costumes for $8.50 a piece!!! Whoo hooo!!!!

Hi Jen- Yup, my youngest princess, DD5 princess:, starts kindergarten right after Labor Day. She's definitely ready, and we're excited for her. I hear you about the diva - our oldest, DD8 princess:, is turning into that. I guess I'm not helping by buying her a new princess costume.

Jodi- Great job on the 5K. So how was the ice cream?

Well I have officially had my first idiotic bike injury. I did 10.8 miles last night avg 13.5 mph (I have learned my Garmin has a bike mode :cool1: ) that included warm up. since I am very new to this I have no idea if that is good or not. I got a good workout in so that's good. Well at the end of the trail there is a bridge that does not transition well to the road so I stop my bike & walk over it. As I was coming up to it, putting on my brakes, standing up on right pedal & putting left leg out to the ground I turned the handle bars to the left & my left knee slams into the curled down part of the handle bars. Ouch! I have a large V shaped cut & a bruised goose egg on my knee. Very preeeeety :teeth: At least my first stupid bike thing didnt include a crash :rotfl:

Dave-I am so glad your legs are improving! You are right on track with your training. And great deal on the costumes. You couldnt find that kind of a deal on clearance after Halloween. Oh, and the socks are fine with my other shoes, my new ones are different in the back somehow. I love my WISH socks!

Rhonda-I just want to thank you again for putting together the Illuminations party. It is going to be so much fun & I am very excited about hanging out with everyone at Epcot, wearing our medals, watching Illuminations & eating dessert (because we will have all burned about 4 million calories during that weekend, right?) What more could you ask for :woohoo:

What do you guys do when you have a blister? I cannot find a band aid that will stay on during training. I am xt today so it shouldnt be that big of a deal, but Friday I need to do 4 miles. Its about the size of a dime on my ankle. Any suggestions?

Hey all...Back from a 4 miler. It is bad when you start running a 0600 and it is already hot! But had fun with the people I ran with, so it was worth it. Monday I did 3 something on an indoor track....20 laps = 1 mile  but DDs "ran" with me b/c there was noone else on the track. When DD8 & 6 start back school (8/16) I am hoping to get back to the bike and up the running and swimming. Summer is fun with them home, but my WOs suffer.

Terri
Sadly yes....all that did was get all over my shorts and I had a nasty gooy feeling on my back. I have tried everything. It happens with all my shorts and running pants. I think what happens is.....it heals a little, but not all the way. Then I mess it up again with a LR. Oh well....no big deal (until I get in the shower).

Jodi - don't be too hard on the race organizers. Sometimes they have to go through a race to see what they need to do differently next time. They'll think they have everything covered, but until they actually put everything in action, they don't really know how it all will work.
Oh, I wasn't trying to be hard on them, just saying that it was a little disorganized....I know it's the first time doing the race, but most of the people in the area weren't informed as to what was going on that day and many roads were closed off - making the people in the area frustrated.

Sorry, if my comments came off a little harse earlier (in my post) it wasn't intended that way at all. I know it's tough to organize bigger events. :thumbsup2

Dave/Cam - The Ice Cream was great - they offered Chocolate and Vanilla. :goodvibes

Good morning everyone! I didn't run last night, I wanted to give my calf a break. I tried putting Icy Hot on it, it helped a lot and I have no pain today, it probably would have helped a lot more if the Icy Hot hadn't expired 2 years ago! :rotfl2: I spent some time on Runners World.com and Running Times.com to figure out what is wrong with my leg and if it's serious. I found out that calf tightness can be caused by speed work (which I haven't done, but I've upped my speed) hills and trail running, it's not serious, you just have to ice and take an anti-inflammatory and stretch the calf really good. I'm just glad that the "injury" is nothing serious and it sounds like it's okay to run through the pain, as long as it's not a piercing pain. I plan on doing 4 tonight, we'll see what happens.

Dave--Awesome job on your Halloween bargains! I  to shop and I    a great bargain. Yes, I am one of those people who buy something because it's a good deal and not because I actually need it. Great news about your legs. Oh, and you will LOVE 'Ohana, that is my favorite restaurant in WDW, I dream about eating there.

Tiff--Sorry about your bike injury! But I bet those war wounds look awesome! I have a huge scar on my knee when I fell during my 10 miler in December and I love it when I wear shorts/skirts--the scar makes me look tough! pirate:

Christa--Is it a tag or a little string in the shorts rubbing you? Have you tried cutting it out? I have 2 pairs of Nike shorts that have a little piece of string on the inner leg, I keep forgetting to cut the piece off and it keeps rubbing my thigh. Ouch!

Wfloyd--Great to "see" you again! Tell Lynnda to check in every once in a while, we miss her!

Dana--Michael is adorable! I still can't believe school is starting already in the south. When do you guys get out?

Terry - Thanks! That at elast gives me some hope for tonight!

Tiff - Only other thing would be to cover it in body glide. DOn't know if that's enough to help wiith a pre-existing blister, though.

Christa - you can use moleskin. It will definitely protect your skin, but you'll notice when you pull it off! It's worse than a bandaid.

Tiff - You are sooooo tough!

Dave - Glad to hear all your persistance is paying off. Way to stick w/ it!!!!!

Krista - Glad your calf is feeling better!!

Sunny - Hello!!!! check in!!!!

Yesterday i rode the PUSS on a 9 mile trail. I should be developing massive leg muscles w/ all of the single speed riding i've been doing!!

Tiff

For blisters this usually works:

Vasline on the blister
Bandaid next
White athletic tape over the bandaid
Vaseline on the hot spot on the tape
Socks
I always run in 2 pair, a super thin pair next to the skin and a double-layer over that. Double-layer is a sock with 2 really thin layers which slip against each other.

Having said all of that . . .

My right heel has a bone which stick out and rubs the inner liner of my right shoe. At this year's half marathon of all times the inner layer broke away, and about mile 8 I could feel the trouble in the heel. By the finish it was hurting pretty good so I stopped at the medical area. The staff placed a thin, spongy and cool layer of plastic (I think called "Second Skin") on the huge blister and it felt like heaven.

My concern was the full marathon for the next day, since it was really painful and I couldn't get a shoe on. We found the same second skin at a Walgreens and Marathon morning I opened up the blister, put on a dab of vaseline, applied the second skin, wrapped the heel with white athletic tape, vaseline on the tape, socks, then the shoe. Much to my surprise and delight I had zero trouble with the heel during the Marathon.

This year I'm bringing second skin in the kit.

Howard and Cam

Good luck with dropping daughter off at University. I can honestly say that was the most emotionally difficult day of my life as a parent. You are so proud of your child and yourself for raising a young person who is ready to start that important next adventure in life, but you hurt so much inside because you know a wonderful stage of your life is gone forever. As the day goes on you realize how good this is for your child but all I could think of was what it would be like to come downstairs for breakfast tomorrow and find an empty table. I wanted to go back to January 1985 and start it all over again, and then I felt guilty for being selfish and wanting her back. We were all fine with the goodbye's at the end of orientation, but when mom and dad drove out of the College's front gate the tears flowed freely.

It does get better, usually pretty fast.

And now, 9 months and 10 days from her College commencement (who's counting?), the feeling are the opposite. I am very much looking forward to her graduating, getting a job, and starting the next stage of her life. Yes, part of that is I ONLY HAVE 1 MORE CHECK TO WRITE :cool1: , but part of it is the changes we all have successfully negotiated. After so many years of pouring our time and emotional energy into parenting we are able to do whatever we want whenever we want to. As I tell my colleagues, "we have lots of plans for after she graduates, and none of them are responsible."

Good luck.

Training???

Well it appears I did stop on Friday before I damaged the calf. 1 day off, 2 days of biking and lifting, and yesterday I was able to run an easy 45 minutes. I'm disappointed in myself, however, as Friday's calf trouble was solely due to Wednesday's run. I felt light and was running easy, so I pounded it pretty hard, both pace and hills. Someday I'll remember I'm not in my 20's, but apparently today is not that day.

Good luck all

Craig

Dana, your son is so adorable. How did his first day of school go?

Judy I bought a pair of shoes at Sports Authority and lucked out with the sales person, who was very helpful. I've noticed a decline of customer service in the last 10 years, it's too bad.

My friend and I walked 8.5 miles yesterday and it took us 2 hrs. We're participating in the Boulder Backroads half marathon, which is on Sept.24th., so hopefully we can improve our time by then. Have a great rest of the week :cool1:
