Wk of Aug 5--WISH Walking/Running Club

someone said tough runs make tough runners right?
Yup! :thumbsup2

In an effort to get re-motivated to workout (nevermind start training for ToT), I bought a new running journal at Barnes & Noble yesterday during the famous Zack-swap.

I also spent 50 mins. in the pool at the Y with him last night. Not exactly xt, but it was something more than what I have been doing!

Good morning WISH Team.

Cam what are Disney Podcasts?

Erica wore her new Ecco running/walking sandals to do the 6 miles and she said they felt wonderful. She is blister prone and she had no problems what so ever. She has worn the Ecco Mary Janes for a half marathon distance with no problems either.

Mizuno has a new shoe out called the Universe. It is pricey 120 bucks even at running warehouse.com, normal retail is $150. It is a cushioned and supportive shoe that weighs only 3.7 oz. I want it bad but I have to find some to try on first. I ain't shelling out $120 without trying it on. Hopefully the Expo at ToT will have the Mizuno rep. I wear the Mizuno Revolver now and it's 8.2 oz.

Everyone be careful of the heat today. It says something about our level of fitness that we can survive the elements like we do. We may not like it either but for us it's an irritation but to a lot of others it deadly hot.

Did anyone watch the Fat March last night? What did you think?

Well the Pretty Princess and I are off to walk before the heat gets to bad.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning Team!!!! I'm going to try to do my super catch up right now before the day gets too wild. Training is going well, although I still haven't officially signed up for Columbus. My lr on Sunday was pretty good, I did 12 miles--don't get all Mom on me Cam, I did a road/treadmill combo, I did 3 miles on the TM, 1 mile outside 3 times for a total of 9 miles on the TM and 3 miles outside. It really wasn't that bad, since I was only outside for 11 minutes at a time, it didn't seem too hot, even though it was in the 90's Sunday afternoon. I finished in 2:15 for an 11:20ish pace, I'm really pleased with that. Yesterday I went to the gym for xt and lifting. I ended up doing 10.80 miles on the random hill program on the bike. I didn't make it in time for the spinning class, so I didn't get to really try out my new cycling shoes, I wore them, but on the regular stationary bikes, they don't have the clip-in pedals. For my birthday, Stephen got me a Polar heart rate monitor that's compatible with all the equipment at Gold's, so I've been having fun with that for the past couple of weeks. My average heart rate was 137 yesterday. :) Today I have 3 miles, definitely on the TM as we are hitting 96 today and we are under a smog alert and a heat advisory. I love living in the Midwest!!! ;)

Moonie--:welcome: Congrats on the weight loss!!! That is fantastic!!! Great job on your 6 miles yesterday, that is a wonderful pace.

Lily--I am so glad your Mom is doing better!!!! :wizard: Sorry the iPod died, I'm fanatical about charging mine, especially as I'm getting up into upper mileage for my lr's. I couldn't imagine running 16 miles with only myself for company. :)

Kristi--Right, you don't want to grab Johnny's anything. ;) ;) ;) I think the new training log is a great motivator. Another thing that motivates me during the times I hate running is to down load a bunch of new songs on my iPod that I'm only allowed to listen to if I run or xt. I want to hear the songs so bad, it forces me to get out there and train. New clothes are helpful too. ;)

Cam--:bday: belated!!! I hope you had a wonderful day. Did you get any new toys? Great job leaving the house to workout once you were already home, that takes commitment!!!! How sore is Andrew today?

Carrie--Is this your last week at your "old" job? Are you dancing up and down the hallways yet? Can't wait to see you on Saturday!

Terri--Stephen and I are both big Hal Higdon fans. Stephen's used him for every event he's run and this is the 2nd time I've used his training plans. I've used John Bingham's plans in the past for 2 1/2 marathons and 1 full and while I love John Bingham, his plans aren't my favorite, especially the timed runs instead of mileage runs during the week. That said, I think you would be better to stick with John Bingham's plan coming off your surgery and Achilles Tendon injury. Hal Higdon's plans are a bit more challenging and I don't want to you to hurt yourself again. Good luck deciding.

Jen-- Just wanted to give you a hug. I'll give you a real one on Saturday.

SW Dave--Have you decided about the marathon yet? I'm going back and forth if I should register too. If I'm able to run in January, but didn't sign up, I'll have a terrible case of medal envy!!!!! Did you happen to catch the Steelers game Sunday night? I don't want to get all crazy, but they looked really, really, really good. I was especially impressed with Cedric Wilson and Carey Davis.

Stephanie--So, the marathon nightmares start. :scared: I haven't had any this time, but I definitely had them before the Disney marathon. I'll try to over look the whole Cleveland Browns fan thing. ;) But just let me say, Brady Quinn is an idiot--you are a rookie, sign the stupid contract!!!

Judi--I bet you look marvelous in your New Balance cross trainers. You are the queen after all. princess:

FL Bill--:bday:!!! There a lot of August birthdays!! I guess all that holiday cheer between Halloween and Thanksgiving really gets to people!!

Mel--I have a hard time running on vacation too! I usually start out really good, but as the week goes on, sleeping in an extra hour looks better and better. :) See ya on Saturday!!!

I know I missed people, but I should get started on my work. Boo! Hiss!!! Hopefully I'll have time to post more than once a week.

Good morning WISH group! Another HOT day for all of us it seems...... again with the dreadmill.....when will the madness end????:confused3

I didn't run yesterday (rest day from my LR on Sunday), but I did get a stretch class and Pilates in last night. I felt much better after stretching my sore muscles. Tonight will be 5 miles on the dreadmill and then strength class (pump).

Lily: I am so glad that Mom is ok.....that kind of thing can be scarey!

Cam: Good job making it to the gym....how did your ds do with the trainer?

SWDave: 5 miles in this heat? Good for you! It doesn't matter if it was slow...you got the steps in, that's what counts!

WindWalker: I missed Fat March, did you see it? How was it?

I hope everyone has a good and productive day! Keep cool!

Beth

Greetings Everyone:

OK, it's official. I will not be running any Disney Marathon events in January 2008. I've been doing a lot of talking with DW about it, and it was causing a lot of strain because we were at odds about it. Late last week, I got an e-mail newsletter from the Jeff Galloway training programs, and it mentioned they had a very limited number of slots left for the Marine Corps Marathon in October, 2007. Well, I talked to DW about it, and we decided that I would run the Marine Corps Marathon in October, and we would not be going to Disney again in January. I'm a little dissapointed to not be running with you all in January. However, I'm excited to be in the Marine Corps Marathon (I just got my registration confirmation today), and I'm also excited to be training for a marathon with the full support of DW.

oh Dave....sorry to hear that!! you can be on the scream from home team with me! :teeth:

i'm too far behind to read and catch up -- yesterday got a great interval powerwalk in, my Garmin is already pushing me! today is a rest day, tomorrow XT.

another busy week for me -- thinking of the team...

WW Dave- My bf put his foot down on watch Fat March, I think he wasn't buying into it as a way to help people get healthy. I'm really curious about this show, I see a lot of opportunity for this to go wrong.

MS Dave- Things happen for a reason in my view on it. I've actually just made the decision not to run any of the 08 Disney marathon events either. I'm going to be traveling a lot in the fall so I don't want to use up all my vacation days. I figure something will come along that will make me glad I did this. I'd say running the Marine Corps Marathon with the support of your wife is your silver lining!

Oh as for me and training reports all I had today was weight training and there's really nothing exciting to report there. I'm starting to feel stronger but I feel like it's just as much the running as the weights. I could use an extra little kick in the morning to get out of bed. Anyone willing to fly to Boston to dump cold water at 6am every morning?

MS Dave - I am so sorry to hear that you won't be running with us again this year, but as someone else already said. Everything happens for a reason. Kind of like my Sept disney trip with free dining, we had to cancel because of DS6's football. I was so upset, but then DH and I talked and I am going to get to make it for October instead and make it to the TOT race with everyone!! It sounds like the Marine Corps Marathon will be fun, and there is not much better than doing something to make you happy and knowing that your spouse is backing you all the way!!

Dana

Just checking, as I obviously have nothing to report. (Actually just looking to see if Kristi has done any training. Hee hee. )

MSDave - Oh....I'll never get to meet you. :guilty: I'm happy for your MC marathon entry though. :thumbsup2 OK start signing up for everybody's Live Results. That's what I did in 2006. Plus we will call you from the PC meet. OK it will be a tease, I know. Everyone called me from Trail's End once and it killed me because I wasn't there but it was sure a lot of fun! :yay:

Good Morning team!!!!!!

I am feeling so guilty!!!! I am so far behind with posts....please don't kick me off the team:grouphug:

MSDave, sorry to be missing you in January. That you are doing MCM is good! I'd like to see if I could do that some day. I look forward to your report. (Don't forget to WISH Team Calendar it so I can list it properly--otherwise I may forget.)

I'm not sure how I feel about the TV weight loss programs when they are extreme. I'd love to see the long term stories from those who were on the shows. These do seem dangerous, but if they help to get things going, turning into a long-term opportunity, and are done with medical supervision, well--maybe. But you never hear after stuff.

In an effort to get re-motivated to workout (nevermind start training for ToT), I bought a new running journal at Barnes & Noble yesterday during the famous Zack-swap.

Great motivator, Kristi!!! You may even want to set an exercise goal for the month, be it in miles or minutes (feel free to come join the August Exercise Challenge on the general WISH board! :goodvibes Just think of all the minutes you've already gotten in with your shopping XT :rotfl: and your time in the pool!

Cam what are Disney Podcasts? . . .

Dave -- I was able to set it up in itunes that Disney's free podcasts are automatically downloaded to my itunes. I get the audio ones that talk about new stuff at the parks and on the cruise line, and now that I have an ipod video, I have also gotten some great videos automatically, including the specials they run on the Disney Channel (about 5-9 minutes each) previewing new Disney and Pixar movies. I think there may even be podcasts at the top of the DISboards, but I don't think those download to your mp3 player

Oh, and you might want to check zappos.com for your shoes. They do free overnight shipping and free returns and I have gotten my shoes there in the past. So it is a risk-free venture.

Cam--:bday: belated!!! I hope you had a wonderful day. Did you get any new toys? Great job leaving the house to workout once you were already home, that takes commitment!!!! How sore is Andrew today?

Thanks for asking, Krista! Andy said he is fine today and was asking if I'd be willing to go home first to get him before going to the gym tonight for XT. I am hoping Howard will avoid the heat and go to the Y with him, so I can go right from work (yes, I remembered my bag today! :thumbsup2 ) Oh, and I guess Howard couldn't think of any gadget I don't already have, so I ended up with a gift certificate to my favorite jewelry store! Did I mention that this was my first birthday IN MY LIFE that I didn't get cake? :cake: Still sad about that! (Guess Howard knows about the weight loss while training thread. :rotfl2: ) That's okay though, Carrie and Lily have promised to sacrifice themselves at CDC to the effort of remedying my cake deprivation. :grouphug:

Cam: Good job making it to the gym....how did your ds do with the trainer?

Beth -- Great job doing what some of us are bad at, taking care of the muscles when we aren't running! Andrew really enjoyed his time with the PT and is looking forward to the next session to learn about the leg strengthening machines. I have to tell you, though, seeing him on the TM nearly sent me into a panic when I thought of how easy it is to get injured if you don't realize how fast anything over about 3.2mph is. I asked him to start slow, below 3.0 mph and bump it up only one notch at a time. I kept thinking of how our very athletic teammates (Carrie and Tricia, right?) have been injured. It only takes a second of lapse in concentration for that to happen. Of course, he thought I was being a worrier. :confused3

Dave -- I know you are a bit disappointed about January, but I think it is awesome that we are going to have a WISH team presence at MCM. Aren't Colleen and Sara running that too? You guys will have an awesome time. I have heard the race is so great and there is so much to see and just being around all the American service people who are running the race is inspiring. I am really, really glad that you have this to look forward to and that DW is supporting you! :goodvibes

HI Everyone. I am trying to keep my spirits up. Thanks to CAM, I am still hanging out here. CDC is in how many days???? Ughhh, I don't feel ready at all. And my head cold is still hanging on, but I think it is more allergies than cold. The temps and weather don't help that at all.

So last year I was talking about all the rude punky people that scream obscenities out their windows when I run. This hasn't happened in a long time since I changed my route. But twice I have tried another route and both times have had this problem again. What's worse... On Saturday I had a punky kid scream at me AND throw a cup of ice at me. What the...... I was almost in tears. This is a main road with nice businesses on it, so it's not scummy at all. The cup didn't hit me, but it really shook me up!!

SWDave - I am sad to hear you won't be at WDW, but happy that your DW is letting you run another marathon. I will just have to chat with you on here I guess!!

Cam - Thanks for cheering me up yesterday. Like I said, I just really need friends now.

OK, I am running off to the gym at lunch to hit the elliptical. I am trying to baby my foot so that I can run CDC this weekend without too much pain!!!

Cam: I know what you mean.....I have my oldest ds walking on the treadmill for his cardio (he is on WW) but he is only 10yrs old. He doesn't get it either...I am very careful to make sure he is following 'the rules'. He tried to get on the other day in his BARE feet. Boy, did I freak out! He knows now not to do that!

SWDave: So sorry to hear about DW events.....but I totally get the reason. It's hard to incorperate family with running. I am always worried that I sacrifice my time with them to much. I have been taking the whole family with me on my long runs and they actually ride their bikes while I run. I do get to see them on and off (staging areas and their turn-around). We do them on our local rail trail. I feel good that they are 'training' too! We are making my marathon a family vaction to Toronto (dh and my boys picked it!) I didn't have much say in what marathon 'we' were doing! (((That's ok, I am glad they are excited!!))))) I made it clear from the beginning of this, that it is a family affair, and we all had to be on board with the hard work. It has made them accountable!

Jenn: I wouldn't worry so much about the loud, obnoxious people. I used to get very hurt when something like that happened, but now I pretty much flip them off and tell them to "have a NICE day" if you know what I mean. Don't let them get to you.....:grouphug:

Beth

I did a 30 minute easy walk last night. We had thunderstorms, so I was dodging the rain ~ I hightailed it home once I saw lightening :scared1:

For those of you talking about buying a Garmin, here is something else to look into in case you don't want to spend the money right now.

http://bimactive.com/ba/ui/land_main.php?partner=bim

With BIMActive, the right cell phone carrier, and the right phone, you may be able to use it as a GPS receiver. It is definitely worth checking into if you have a compatible phone. I believe there might be a monthly subscription fee.

Also, Shan was asking as to whether two people can use the same Garmin. If you both set up a BIM account you can use the same Garmin, but upload only your runs to your account. With BIM you get some easy to read maps of your elevation, route and pace so it is a nifty tool. I like this better than the software that comes with the Forerunner.

Jen - Keep hanging in there! As for the buttheads being mean while you are busting your behind out there... :furious: You will do fine at CDC. I wish I was going with you guys! Maybe then I would have kept my butt in gear this summer.

Dave - I am so sad we are going to miss you at Disney this year. :sad1: But...I am thrilled you & your DW have come to a great compromise on your training with MCM! :yay: Disney will be there in '09 and shoot, maybe you could go Goofy!

Good note about my lack of training this summer...
I HAVE NICE TOENAILS!!! :lmao:

Look what I found! Medtronics is the company that makes the spinal cord stimulator I am going to get. They sponsor a marathon for "Global Heroes"-- veteran marathon runner's who have developed medical complications requiring a Medtronic's implant device. Woo Hoo that's Me:banana:

I have a new goal: To be a Global Hero:woohoo: They only pick 25 per year... Mucho PD will be needed...

Here's the gist of the event:

GH said:
Running long distances was never meant to be easy. It becomes even harder when the body becomes a barrier. For runners diagnosed with medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, spinal disorders, chronic pain or neurological disorders, that is the reality. Yet the passion for running remains.

Medtronic proudly recognizes these runners as Global Heroes, in a first-of-its-kind program that brings people running from around the world with medical devices to Minnesota to run in Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon events.

Here's the website:

Also, incase anyone mis-understood my play on words... When I said Steve was DIS-owned, I meant that DIS (aka WISH Racing Team) will never let him go. Sorry, Steve and others if that didn't come across correctly :flower3:

Sunny

Jen--that's terrible! Makes me want to come up there and knock some sense into those kids! You are doing great--don't let those punks discourage you!

SWDave--So sorry to hear that you won't be running WDW this year. Was hoping you could be along to help me push that 4hr. mark! Guess now I'll have to rely on DH to do it--even though he tends to cave to me, when I'm fading, instead of pushing me forward. In any case, WTG on the MCM. Sounds like a lot of fun, and especially since DW is on board! We'll miss you--but you'll be with us in spirit.

Kristi--I think I need a running journal as well. I need a little extra motivation right now!

Today is a rest day for me. I slept fitfully again last night--thankfully, though, not due to nightmares. I think I've resigned myself that I'm doing 16 miles on a treamill/indoor track combo this week. The hext index toward the end of the week is supposed to be from 105-110; not gonna chance it. Have a great Tuesday all, stay cool and hydrated!

OMG Jen that is horrible.

You will do great this weekend, keep your chin up your doing amazing!!!!!!!

Kim
