Cancellation question

I never thought this would happen…but I might be in a predicament that would require us to cancel our trip next month. We are less than 30 days out and have had to bring my mother home for hospice care. They have given us no time line and I will not leave her as I am the caregiver.

I just want to make sure I am understanding the “holding” policy correctly. And please…if I am not, you will not hurt my feelings by correcting me!

If I cancel, the points will go into holding and I must make a new reservation at least 60 days out and the points must be used by May 31 — June use year.

Correct?

First, I’m so sorry that your mother is in hospice now. You’re correct about the holding rules - you can’t book until 60 days before the checkin date and have to use your points by the end of your current UY.

However, don’t cancel online. Call MS to cancel and tell them why. They may be able to waive holding rules. They can’t always do that — I know of at least one case reported here when they didn’t — but it’s worth a call.

Sorry about your mother! And as others mentioned, I hope you can get some pixie dust.

You would only be able to use the points to make a reservation at 60 days from the date you want to reserve. It might be better to consider renting out what you have as getting something inside 60 days is not that easy.
 
It has been a know bug/oversight, but it seems that if you book a reservation with current points, you later, (60 days out) you may be able to modify the reservation online to reallocate the points in the reservation, swapping holding points in place of current points.
Not 100% sure it's still there, but It's worth a try if timing works for you.
If you want/can, renting the reservation like PP suggested would be better.
 
So sorry to hear about this. I’ll +1000 to calling in as one time we had to cancel due to my Dad’s last radiation apt being pushed out. He canceled and the points went into holding. When I called in to ask a question about timing and in conversation mentioned why he had to cancel, the agent immediately said let me move those back to your regular use year for you. So it can happen!
