Wk of Aug 10 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I'm at a loss as to how to keep running. :confused3 I can't continue doing this to my body and being unable to walk for days after a LR. :sad1:

Jackie

Jackie,

Try to walk in the pool, or ride a stationary bike. Do something different, to make use of other muscles. That's my 2 cents.

Way to go Howard and Wendy. You two rock! :thumbsup2

Deb, are you sure it was migraines, and not brain freeze from all the ice cream, or possibly a Scotch induced heffalump experience? LOL, just kidding. Take care of that brain, because a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Aloha Jeff: Are you SURE you don't want to post pics of the Waikiki sights? :rotfl:

Jeff...Now, where are the pics of the beach boys and lifeguards?

Here you go Tracey and Deb, just for you. It was a little difficult for me to get these for you.

While out on my 8 mile run, around mile 6 1/2 Guru Les and I spot a laptop bag abandoned on the sidewalk, sort of in the bushes. We stop to inspect it, and find that a prescription drug representative must have been robbed. The bag was filled with pens, and literature, but no medicines or laptop were there.

Not finding a police officer nearby, I ended up carrying it in one hand or a another while finishing my run. I'm sure it was the weirdest sight to anyone seeing me. It was at least 10 lbs, so my workout was more than normal.

In the last mile, we came upon a construction zone on the main road into Waikiki. There I found a police officer, and turned it over to him. Whew, running without the bag was so much easier.

At least if I'm ever late to catch a plane at the airport, I'm prepared for the dash from the counter to the gate.

Happy Admissions Day everyone, I hope you're all enjoying your holiday like me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I knew you folks would get why One-derland was such a big deal! I think to celebrate I'll go order another race-ready WISH shirt in hopes that I'll actually be able to wear it by January! :rotfl: (I LOVE the color!)

Wendy: Congrats on the goal you reached!!!! That's an awesome feeling.

Jeff: Nice job on recovering the briefcase!!:thumbsup2 and I am have a great day off today. Loved the photos!!:lmao:

AFM: Had to get up a bit late because my dog, Mickey, is going to the vet to have her teeth cleaned and can't eat or drink this morning and that is her most favorite thing to do!!! Just waiting until 9am to take her over, then go for my 4miles, go to a massage, VOTE, to the mall and then home!! ANd then watch some OLYMPICS!!!!

Jackie - Pool walking would likely help lots! HAve you looked into CHi walking? The theory is to be no impact adn that shoudl also helped. If strtching helps at all, try yoga. It does miracles for me. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

OK, WTH is Admissions Day? I understand when Canada and UK have holidays tha twe don't, but HI? What's up with that? ;)

:guilty: I was a slug last night and fell asleep on the couch. WIl do 8 tomorrow, though.

Happy Friday!!

Jackie - so sorry you're in that much pain! Definitely try pool walking and I found the Chi walking greatly helped me get moving w/o pain a couple months ago.

Sounds like everyone is doing great - keep up the good work!

Ok, recovery week easier to adhere to than taper ....until last night. ;)
Plan called for 30 min walk last night which I got in plus 30 min upper body weight work then 30 min pool time. Half of that swim laps other half walking laps. Quick soak in the hot tub and feeling good this morning. Tomorrow's a 2 mile walk and thinking of taking bikes out for a ride, too. Weather is going to be gorgeous.

Have a great day!

Finished week two of my starting over program today. :)

Got in 8.36 miles this week, not counting my walking warmups and cooldowns. Average pace for the week was 13:42. I'm pleased with that since I'm alternating with walking breaks. When I run I'm back into the upper 10:00s which is where I was when I ran before my hiatus.

Today I didn't have my new running partner with me and I was surprised how hard today seemed! Maybe having someone to run with really does make a difference? I passed the Mommy walkers today in my neighborhood and one screamed out - Just like the old days! Ha! Not really, I tried to look strong when I ran past them, but I was actually about to die! :lmao:

Next week I kick it up a minute in my running breaks. I'm loving these walking breaks, I don't know how I was running without them before. It is hard to imagine getting back to that place again, but I'm gonna try!

Hope everyone has a good weekend. :grouphug:

Carrie: My problem with the swimming isn’t so much going fast it is more not drowning. I enjoy not dying while doing my endurance events. I can swim well enough in a pool to stay alive but in a stream of other swimmers in open water it’s a crap shoot. I would definitely do one in an inland lake as opposed to Lake Erie though. Thanks for the confidence in me, however misplaced it may be.

Debra: I would say the training is on track but we will see in October. Yeah, I had high hopes for us in the Olympics seeing that our youth teams are more on par with the better nations that the men’s team. We have to play aggressively because our only hope in competing globally is using our strength and athleticism because we don’t have the technical skill or the Brazils and Netherlands of the world. That injury time goal to the Dutch is really what did us in. Hopefully you are feeling better.

Howard: Congratulations on the new PR, they feel great don’t they.

Wendy: Congratulations on hitting the weight goal.

I will be camping this weekend at Mohican (for those on you in Ohio that would recognize the place) so it will be a light weekend running for me. All I have planned is my double or triple header of softball on Sunday. We play 2 for sure and 3 if we win the second game. I call it speedwork.

Thanks, everyone for your well wishes. I'm feeling much better in all ways.

Racey Tracy: Question about your core work. Does this mean you're doing core work during the commercial breaks or as a break from the Olympics. Me, I see you as a multi-tasking goddess. Good luck to Mickey for her vet appointment. (Vote?)

Carol: Your new job--that's one heck of a commute! :lmao: Seriously, it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for you--a growing/expanding company. Aside from the nuisance of painting, that is! Good luck with the new job!

Howard: I know I caught you yesterday, but CONGRATULATIONS again. What great news on your PR. You definitely deserve the dancing banana award. I also find it interesting that you refer to your racing success in terms of "afterglow." I generally reserve that term for something else, but each to his own. :confused3 :rotfl2: P.S. Great recovery runs, too. There's your running smart strategy in action.

Aloha Jeff: I hope you're having a great Admissions Day and enjoying the waterpark. I KNOW the keiki are enjoying the day. And you get good samaritan points for lugging that bag to the police. :wizard: I'd give you OJ Simpson/Hertz points (from the running-through-the-airport commercials), but I think his cultural significance has shifted. Plus, I'd date myself, and I wouldn't want to do that, would I?

And nope, I don't think my migraine was a brain freeze from ice cream. I'm proud to say I have considerable experience with the latter to self-diagnose. (Proud??) I cannot comment on the possibility of a scotch-induced heffalump experience, as I can handle my liquor. :rolleyes1 But I'm very flattered by your concern for my mind--even though it's odd that you bring up my mind and "waste(d)" in the same sentence. ;) As for me, I think a "waist is a terrible thing to mind." Hence, the ice cream and scotch. (And let's not forget a good gin and tonic, preferably while enjoying the scenery/pics of eye candy that you so graciously provided me and Tracey. :rotfl: )

Wendy: Again, a big, big, YAY and WHOOPEE! for your incredible weight loss and new one-derland. It's one-derful that you met your DL deadline, your goal, and are so energized. You've worked so hard for this and you deserve lots of cheers and applause! :cheer2: :yay:

Sandy/Eeyore: You know, you deserve a dancing banana for your event (just like Howard). And for your support of Susie, as well. You encouraged her to run her own race--and that's the WISH spirit in action. We're all so supportive of each other, and I think it's great when we hear RRs of such give-and-take! I'm sorry that you're going to miss '09, but glad to hear there's lots of Disney in your (and your family's) future. '10, perhaps?

Susie:  Because you, too, deserve a lot of love for your WISHer behavior!

Judy: How is your knee feeling, btw, self-imposed R&R aside? Are you feeling okay to go? (Secretly, I agree with Bill's "Behave yourself," but thought I'd soft-pedal things for a change. He's certainly got your number--and apparently a few stories with which to blackmail you. :rolleyes1 )

Jennifer: Great 4 miles and pace! WTG! :thumbsup2

Stephanie: It sounds like your schedule has settled down a bit this week. Yay for adding that half to your fall schedule. That's what, a 100% increase. Impressive! :lmao: ;) :thumbsup2 (And one more than me, too!)

Jackie: Ooooh, I'm so, so sorry to hear about your ongoing pain. Your condition sounds so frustrating and disappointing on top of everything else. Does your doctor or that masseuse have any suggestions--PT, perhaps? I wish I had suggestions, but know that I'm thinking good thoughts for you. And that I think it's terrific you're cooking at the pancake breakfast--volunteering like that is important, and will make you feel better!

Kristi: The Hampton 1/2 sounds great--and I know you're such a music lover you couldn't resist this opportunity. I'd love to do it, but ToT is calling my name.

Carrie: So, you're still keeping up with the Chi running? Excellent? So, did you do your 8 today? :cheer2:

Liz: So you're cheating on your recovery schedule by ADDING exercise. Oh, you're so hooked! As long as they're easy miles/laps and you're enjoying yourself, right?

Shan: You're doing great in week two of your recovery! Good pace, good miles, a strategy. Yay! I sometimes wonder if having a partner or group makes things easier--lots of WISHers find them motivating and good training tools. You'll have to do an ongoing compare and contrast for those of us who go it alone.

Frank:
I enjoy not dying while doing my endurance events.
Finding pleasure where you can, I guess? :confused3 :rotfl2: I'm with Carrie, though, tons of confidence in your abilities and training if you want to do a tri. Have a great time this weekend with your light running, softball, and camping, oh my!

As for football, where you see aggressive behavior, I see as hot-dogging, lack of discipline, and/or even poor sportsmanship. (I tend to be a little "rose-colored glasses" in my sports watching, so feel free to make fun of me. DOOD does.) Yeah, the Dutch goal was a bad break. But the team opened up the door for that one, what with the deliberate yellow-carding. (That worked out well.) But even if I overlook the yellow-card behavior as tactical--and I did, initially--what about the elbowing red-card just 3 minutes into the match with Nigeria? Bah. I'm not sure I see any need for that. What we do agree on is that the US team can't really compete in terms of skill, etc. Unlike our women's football team--did you see today's US/CAN match?

As for me: I shifted up training this week because of the migraine, etc. I got a slow, easy run in yesterday (4.75 miles) and XT today. I'm feeling okay, all things considered. Tomorrow I'm scheduled for 6.

And this weekend I hope (if the eyes cooperate) to see Tropic Thunder. What can I say, a comedy that opens itself to multiple points of controversy intrigues me. (And I'm hoping the film treats both the race and disability issues satirically, not just as lowbrow humor, or I'll have to write a letter. That's my understanding of the usage from reviews and industry articles, anyway. (If you don't know of the film and its controversies, there are several sites--including Wikipedia--that provide information. It looks like the protests from disability rights advocates are eclipsing concerns with Robert Downey's character. Here's an article on film critics' responses that excerpts reviews and bring up the most problematic instances.)

Okay, so my movie-going doesn't have anything to do with my running--except it's my reward for a job well done on weekend LRs. What do you reward yourself with?

Shan - Thanks I made it through it. I am glad to hear you are back to running. I guess I have missed quite a bit.

Debra - I hope you are feeling better soon. I definately don't need to treat myself - I already have plenty of piercings ;)

Wendy - CONGRATULATIONS!! That is wonderful news!!

Howard - Congratulations on your PR!! :cheer2:

Carrie - I didn't know you did Tri's too?? How long have you been doing them?

Kristi - Aw, you're not gonna be at ToT this year? Is it because it's not on our birthday this year? :rotfl:

Jackie - Hope you are feeling better soon

Well, my girls made it through the ear piercing (so did I!) even though the cartridge got stuck in my 2 year old's ear!! Talk about a nightmare! But it is done - thank goodness. Here they are:

Debra: Hey girlfriend....Glad you doing better!!!:cool1: I just got a phone call from the vet and Mickey is going great and is up and about after the "procedure" (teeth cleaning). She's 14 and that's why I worry about about putting her out for things. I was carrying her collar and leash to the car after dropping her off and had a sudden flash of one day having to do that one day and never going back to pick her up. I do get a bit emotional sometimes.:sad1:
Vote, I got to do Early Voting, voting in my county is on August 26th and I thought I would just be too much into my packing and stuff before the DL 1/2 to do it that day. Yeah, loving those photos from Jeff :lmao:
You know how I reward myself...........ummm.....ICE CREAM!!!

I found some flourescent Green Nail Polish at Walgreens today while out and about. Brand is Sinful Professional. Not very limey but very cool anyway for anyone who might be interested. Photo doesn't capture the color just right.
Here is a photo of the green and orange that I picked up.

flnailpolish-1.jpg

I also found the Dis Lime green Mickey shaped paint samples at Home Depot so I can laminate them and use them for "stuff".

Just a quick drive by today.......

Sitting here at OKW chillin' til we go to dinner at Citrico's and then to Magic Kingdom. If my spelling is off, blame the second glass of wine! No exercise, per se, although the ususal amount of Disney walking. Last night we walked down to Downtown Disney and back (dodging the rumored alligator hanging out by the walkway) Today we got back from Epcot (BTW--I can "rent" the GM lounge for free!.......Possibilities for January?) to find a maintenance guy at our doorway saying he was at our unit to take care of the snake we reported in our room. Say what??!! We didn't, bt he looked around anyway.

Well, off to engage in some good eating, Dole whipping fun!

Maura

Tracy - Glad to hear everything went well with your dog at the vet. It is scary when they get older, and you are totally allowed to be emotional over it! I've cried more over the loss of my pets than anyone else because they are essentially your babies... :(

Becky - Your girls are adorable!

As for me, I can't believe my next marathon is next weekend...gulp!! My taper has been all about me feeling like a slug. Maybe it is watching all those Olympians work so hard that is wearing me out! Fingers crossed that one of these days Canada wins a medal:scared:

Becky, Your girls look so proud of their new earrings! Very cute!

Debra, I'm thinking about The reviews I've read tnd to suggest more of a Zoolander-esque satire than deliberately offensive.

Tracy, Cool find on the green nail polish. OPI makes a somewhat lime green one too (or at least they did in the past). We threw one of my friends a preppy party and I had my toes done in pink and green.

As for me, Today I hit a new distance personal record, 4.75 miles. I seriously considered going for 5.25 (that was the next chances to head back on my route), but considering how sore I was when I got home that would have been a mistake. I did it in just over 41 minutes so somewhere around an 8:40 minute mile pace.

Best,
Jennifer
