Wk of April 27 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Dana: Your 8 miler sounds like it was challenging, in a good way, and I'm sure you'll pick the pace that allows you to maximize your fun. I love the anecdote about Michael's birthday--I have this mental image of the whole cake with sparkler candles. What a cool idea. Are you British, by any chance? You're the only Stateside person I know, barring myself, who uses flipping as an adjective.

Actually, nope. Born and raised in Florida. I've got the southern accent to prove it. I used to use "freakin'" quite a bit, but my FIL used to look at me like I'd just used a different "F" word and so I started using "flippin'" instead. He still gives me the same look though!! :lmao:

Good news on my mom...she is FINISHED with chemo! :cool1:

Oh, and about dogs...had one chase me and sis on our bikes yesterday...pit bull...real scarry b/c there was a car coming and we could not get over...I had decided that I would run over him with my bike and kick his brains in if he came too close....I know that sounds mean but he was out for blood. He was a crazy dog...why do they always chase you while you are going up hill.

YAY!! About your Mom. I can't imagine how much better your must feel.

I love dogs, so much so I have 3 of my own, but the thought of running through my neighborhood sometimes is enough to terrify me. We have a guy in our neighborhood that breeds pits. Pits are great, I have nothing against them, but his are just NASTY. One jumped out of the second story window to chase a girl walking with her dog. And every time I run past they are trying to tear their way out of the house to get me. I have the same thoughts as you do. I will kick his brains in if he gets too close!!

Dana YOU are going to rock the MINNIE no matter how fast or slow!!! I'm so glad you are coming.

NO matter what I will walk the 5k with my mom this weekend, but I just don't know about 15k at this point.

Sorry to be such a downer but the thought of not doing the 15k at all this weekend makes me very sad:sad1:

Angie, I am so sorry that you are hurting so badly. I was really hoping your problems with your back were over. I would also like to see you at least walk the race with Cam. Just because you can't run doesn't mean you can't get your BLING. And if you don't come to the 15k, I won't be able to see you!! I was really looking forward to seeing you again!!

Quick request of my Wish friends. At Minnie, if you see a redhead in a TNT shirt with a princess crown on her head at the 15k, please wish her happy birthday. My running buddy will be there on Saturday celebrating her big day all alone. Don't tell her I told you.

I will definatey keep my eyes out for her!!

OK, well not much going on here today. Lots of housework, I've got 5 miles planned for today, and that's about it. I hope that everyone has a wonderful day, and I'll check back in later after my run!!

Dana

Debra: You are amazing at keeping up with everyone on the board! Good luck on the apartment hunt.

Christa: Yikes! :scared1: Perhaps carrying a water squirter (water gun, water bottle, etc) would help deter the dogs.

Angie::hug: good luck and don't push too hard, your body is trying to tell you something. Though mine occasionally just decides to curse me out! I vote you at least walk the 15K though--at least you will have some WISHwalkers to keep you company!

Kevin::wave2:

:duck:

I had a nice 6 miler yesterday morning. It is beautiful here right now! I don't know who we stole this weather from but I have a sneaking suspicion they want it back! Our "spring" usually lasts all of two days, but this year it's been gorgeous. Remind me of this come August--oh wait make that end of May!

I learned an important lesson yesterday--always wear gloves when handling jalapeño peppers! I was making salsa and guacamole yesterday, which involves cutting peppers. After I finished I noticed that my hands were feeling "raw". A few minutes pass and they start burning (they were actually giving off heat). Evidently my skin doesn't like peppers (though I can eat them just fine). Even now, almost 24 hours later, they still don't feel completely normal (though they aren't burning like they were last night). So I will be wearing gloves from now on! The dips were good anyway!

I went on a nice bike ride last night before heading to the climbing gym. Got to say that rock climbing really did not help the hurting hands thing though!

This morning I get to do some speed play. :woohoo:

I've finished my lit. reviews now and just have a stats project and two take home finals to work on. Getting set for finals next week!

Oooo and I'm making baked brie for my class tonight (we are all bringing food!). I shouldn't have to wear gloves for that right?

Happy running/resting/wogging/walking/xt!

Debra- Sounds like quite the taxing weekend. I’m glad you got in you long run and Shakespeare. I feel you pain, not only literally but figuratively, on the renting. When I was first moving home from FL I was trying to find a house to rent with 2 of my friends. Now I realize that three 20 something (at the time) males are not the ideal renters but we all had college degrees and jobs. We were old enough to be past our out of control parties but in the end we had to move close to a college campus to find a place that would rent to us.

Craig- I will keep the wine bar in mind. I will be in Florence for about a day and a half and we actually meet the bike tour group in Florence. What we hope to do is find a market or street vendor or something like that to grab breakfast and then go down by the river by the Uffizi and the Piazza della Signoria. From what I can tell you can’t go wrong anywhere in Florence.

Gatorphipps- GREAT news for your mom.

I have nothing really. Yesterday and Sunday were rest days. Tonight I go back to the gym for some weights and core work and then will hit the road for a short “see how the legs feel after the 10 miler” run. I am currently looking to do my first fill marathon. As of right now I think I will doing the Gasparilla Classic in Tampa on 3/1/09. The first race I ever did was the 5K that supported the Gasparilla in 2005 so it is kind of a full circle thing to make that my first Full.

-Frank

Morning team! My flight leaves for Florida tonight....!!!!! I just have to get through a day of work and boot camp, then I'm good to go.

Angie - please take care of yourself!! I'm so worried about you. I know you really want to knock this race out because it is your first race back but I'd hate for you to do some serious damage. Either please take it slow or walk it.

Christa - Yay for your mom being done with chemo!

As usual you guys are amazing, and I am really sorry that this has been all about me, I really am.

A couple of things:

  • I WILL NOT BE DOING ANY MORE WORKOUTS THIS WEEK.
  • I WILL GO FIND A FOAM ROLLER TONIGHT AND STRETCH LIKE A MANIAC THE NEXT 4 DAYS.
  • I WILL COMBINE CAM & CARRIE'S (AND EVERY ONE ELSE) ADVICE TO SLOW RUN/WALK THE 15K.

I know I am rediculous, I have always been an all or nothing kind of person and that gets me in trouble so many times.
Jeff - I actually started looking up stuff about IT band last night because I was beginning to wonder about that before I even saw your post.
CAM, CARRIE, DANA, LEANA, CLAIRE (ANYONE ELSE IF FORGOT) - What can I say but

Thank you for the good advice and keeping me out of trouble. I can't wait to see you guys.

YAY!!

Kira, woo for pixie dust before you have even left!! Sounds like it is working up to be a great trip!!

Leana, great job PRing!!

KimU, how great that you can join us for RftT!

AlohaJeff, now that's one beautiful hike! I love how active you and your family are!

Stacie your shirts are too cute! I hope you get lots of extra pixie dust with them!

Mel, I love the 53 Running Commandments. There are so many valuable sayings in there that I need to start remembering...

Cecilla you are so awesome for cheering others on!! Your race report was amazing as well, btw. It moved me to tears and was really exemplary of what an amazing person you are!

Frank, you are smoking fast!!!! I like the idea of coming full circle with the full marathon.

MiaMichelle, welcome!!

BrideMichelle, congrats on finding THE DRESS!! How exciting!!

Debra, wow... do you take notes? My head is spinning just wondering how you managed to tag everyone!

Claire, that sounds painful! I've got jalapeno pepper juice in my eye before and it was murder.. definitely invest in some gloves! That brie sounds yummy!

Angie, take care of yourself! None of us will ever think anything less of you than wonderful for putting your care first instead of PRing or smoking the competition. You'll do great no matter what!

Me.. we went out for a 3 miler last night and I felt really good about it. We finished 2 minutes faster than our 5k time and I feel like I am really learning a lot about my body and running and form every time I go out. I hope I never lose that, because I think the more I learn about myself the more I improve.

Lastly, GOOD LUCK to all the Minnie runners!!! Have a fabulous time!

Morgan - That is great! I hop eyou don't lose it weither!

Leana - :cool1: :cool1:

Angie - Good for you!!! I know it's hard for you, but you have to take care of yourself. :grouphug:

Frank - Very cool plan for your irst full!

OK, must add lasso/leash for Angie to my packing list. ;) ;) :rotfl:

Angie - Excellent plan! Expect the roller to hurt a bit (OK maybe a lot) but it really really helps! :thumbsup2

Darn tootin'! The roller hurts like *@#&*@$^ but I know it's good for me!

Angie - Yay! Good plan!

I really wish I was going to be there too :sad2: . Have fun everyone!

Hey Team - Not only is it DD's b-day today (my baby is growing up).... but....

IT'S BEN AND JERRY'S FREE CONE DAY!

We don't have one here, but I thought I would share this info for those that do!

Sorry I've been missing guys. I have alot going on in my life right now and running has taken a back burner position for me right now since I got hurt. I hope everyone is well and I wish all of you Minnies lots of pixie dust! :cheer2: :wizard: :cheer2:

I would really be thankful for some opinions here...
I went to the orthopedic today. They took x-rays of both knees and everything looks fine. He told me my problems are from overuse and not to run for a month. :sad1: He also wants me to go to physical therapy two to three times a week for six weeks?!? :confused3 Diagnosis says bi-lateral quad strain and bi-lateral knee pain. He never did an MRI on my front upper thighs.

So, I feel like I got nowhere today. I have only run five times since my half back the end of March and haven't run for over a week. My knees now hurt more than they did (It used to be only when I ran and mostly my left knee.) and both quads ache all the time now. It makes no sense to me...

I don't understand the overuse thing since it is hurting worse and I haven't run in a week. I followed my training plan perfectly with the exception of my taper when I had the flu and missed a few of my short runs. I remember when the pains started in the half. Mile seven my front upper thighs hurt, mile eleven left knee started hurting.

Any thoughts from the WISH vets out there?

Thanks guys...

IT'S BEN AND JERRY'S FREE CONE DAY!
Greetings Team: Hi Jen! I was popping in specifically to let the team know that it's Free Scoop Day today at Ben and Jerry's. You beat me to it... enjoy everyone. Get a run in to work off the ice cream...

Let me try to offer you some encouragement since everyone has been doing it for me so much lately.

FIRST THINGS FIRST:

OK - As far as overuse. I know you followed your training plan and did everything right and "safely" and that must be so frustrating to you but unfortunately all our bodies are different and react differently, especially to "new" things.

Second - I know you don't understand why it hurts worse now but that is exactly what happened with my back almost exactly a year a go. Once I stopped running after MINNIE the pain got worse and worse and worse.

The good thing for you is you stopped or significantly slowed down right away. I actually had pain and numbness and tingling the whole time I trained for MINNIE, if I stopped sooner, done physical therapy, seen a doctor - like you did and are doing. Maybe I wouldn't have had to have surgery and be right back where I am at right now??

Believe me if I VERY MUCH FEEL YOUR PAIN AND FRUSTRATING. But I will encourage you to do what doctor says, even if it doesn't make sense and see what happens. PLEASE take it from me, better safe than sorry. :)

Dave and Jen - Cool!! Free pre-Minnie carb loading!! (it DOES count right?)

Shan
- Have you ever had problems with your lower back? Not trying to get you worried, but I know that back pain can often radiate into the legs (both front and back depending on the location). Also, have you tried anything other than running to see if it helps (like cycling or elliptical)?

Carrie
- 5 min rule?? Thought it was 10!! Did I miss the memo somewhere, c'mon gotta keep this WiSHer in the loop, ya know...and oh yeah, no comment on the lasso/leash thing...

Morgan - Nice post!! Sounds like you really "get" running!! The learning process is never ending and it's amazing how much you find out about yourself, especially during that first year.

Angie
- I think you are doing the smartest thing possible for your back and that takes a lot of guts to admit and then follow through with...I hope the weekend is a ton of FUN for you!! And yeah, we all might cross paths at the pool...gonna spend some time there for sure! :goodvibes:

Leana - Congrats again on your 5k PR! Have a safe flight down to Orlando...good luck at the Minnie...hope to get a chance to say "hello" to you!!

Claire
- speed play, rock climbing, biking, jalapeno handling, lit reviews and BAKED BRIE!! Where to begin? Hmmm...hope those hands have healed...you ARE sending down a baked brie to us Minnie racers, right?? (mmmm baked brie goodness)

Kevin - Sorry to hear you won't make the 15k, but have a great time at Jellyrolls!!

Cam - Good luck with W2D2! Your early morning workouts amaze me...I simply cannot function that early in the morning :goodvibes:

Cecilia
- Stay strong this weekend, I wish the best for you.

Maura - I try to use the new products on "short" long runs...something where I can test it out, but not really suffer any consequences in the event that it doesn't agree with me. I'd use them a couple times just to make sure that everything agrees with your system.

Tracy
- congrats on the rest day yesterday, definitely sounds like you needed one!! Oh yeah...do you know how to do a Windows Repair (using the windows cd)?, it replaces any damaged or corrupt files on the PC and often times fixes the problem. Feel free to PM if you need help with it!

Christa
- That's awesome news about your mom!! "run over him and kick his brains in"...wow...stressed out?? :rotfl: I thought about you the other day when I was putting on my helmet to go for a ride :rolleyes1

Krista
- How are you guys doing?? I hope all is well with you, Carter, Hines and...um...who is that dude who used to post on the boards...oh yeah...Stephen. :goodvibes:

Debra
- :rotfl: Bingham in a compromising position...now, now Debra...you know I can't take photos of that stuff...that's what I'm bringing the video camera for :rotfl: "Bingham Gone Wild" will be next YouTube sensation! Also, I usually do Six Flags on Sunday mornings (bible belt down here means no one around then) when there are no lines at all...I'll never do a Saturday again, especially when there is a big convention in town! LOVE the drama in the posts!! I grabbed a bag of popcorn in between post 2 and 3 waiting for the climax of your adventures...only to be thwarted by buzz killer Albert. Seriously, I hope the whole apt. situation takes a positive turn for you soon :goodvibes:

Amy - Oh Amy my dear...WE'LL BE IN WALT DISNEY WORLD AT THIS TIME TOMORROW...YAHOOO!!!! Is there anything more to be said? Don't forget to pack some sunscreen and some chill out clothes because you deserve some rest and relaxation! Three words for you: pool, sun, drink. Three more words: bench, Epcot, Mickey Bar (ok 4 words lol).

Scott's World
- I did 45 minutes on the elliptical last night. Hopefully I'll find the time to squeeze a run in tonight, but I've got a list of last minute stuff to get done before heading off to Orlando early in the morning. That's right...in case you didn't hear...I'LL BE IN WDW TOMORROW!! WOOOOHOOOO!! (sorry, sorry, just a BIT excited here!!) I will have the trusty dusty laptop with me and will hopefully be posting some blurbs here along with maybe the more juicy details over on my blog (yes Debra, that's where you need to be watching)

I hope everyone has an awesome day...GOOD LUCK and SAFE TRAVELS to all of those heading down to Orlando this week. I hope to meet a lot of you on Saturday/Sunday and remember:

What happens in Disney, stays in Disney.

OK....is there a trick to remembering who said/did what so y'all can post? Do you type it in wordpad and then cut/paste? I can't keep up! But that's not a bad thing....
:goodvibes

Frank...have a great time in Italy. My first bike trip (Backroads, not VBT) was in Tuscany and I LOVED it!! Don't forget to count your miles for our team.

Christa, congrats on your mom being done with chemo!

Everyone doing MINNIE---have fun!!! I didn't sign up because of a schedule conflict, which has since gone away, but I am still rehabbing my hip and not running for another week. Can't wait to hear all about it!

Shan...wish I had some wise words. My hip flexor injury was sort of the same...hurt in a race and I thought it was just soreness...6 weeks later (now 7!)...still having difficulty. Have been water running and doing the elliptical instead of running. Water running is a great alternative!

DKP... 2 of the tri's I am doing this month are sprints...so not a huge deal. I do about 8 a year (various distances), because I love it!

Whoever said about having tough training days, and being thankful....I had one of those moments during my swim the other day...there was a lady in the pool doing some sort of water therapy with another woman. Seemed to be having some mental/physical handicap. Made me feel very thankful that I can do what I can do, even if at times, I don't meet my own standards.

Cheers!

Scott - If what happens in DIsney, stays in DIsney, what will be on your blog??? ;) BTW - Rule 1: I am inherently lazy and will make up any rule necessary to meet my needs at teh time! Safe travels!

Shan - By the time I had issues that really sidelined my running last year, evn normal walking irritated it. (I've got to belieev your normal life is likely enough to continue irritation) PT helped a lot. While a month seems extreme to me, I'm no doc. See how PT goes and keep us posted. :wizard: :wizard: :grouphug:

Mel: Thanks again for organizing the steering committee. I think it's great to have dialogue about the future of Wish!

Ang: WTG on the 2.23 miles!!! You're really rockin' right along with your C25K program!!! No worries about the 3 minute runs....you'll do great :).

Z: Wishing you a safe trip home. Thinking of you and your family :).

Leana: YAY for the PR! So proud of you! I bet you rock the Minnie girl! So scary about your bike story...I've had some cars get close to me but nothing like nearly running me over :(. Be careful out there!!! BTW...I'm soooo jealous you are leaving for FL tonight! Can't wait to meet you!

Kim: Congrats on your first Half Marathon!!!!

Hi Original Bill: How are you guys doing? Everyone healthy??? :goodvibes:

NE Bill: Sent you a long winded PM about your training plan! Hope you're doing well.

Jen: Sorry to hear your back has been aggrivated :(. But wtg on getting in that last LR! The last one before any race is always the most nerve-wracking to me.

Kira: YAY for the Poly!!! Wow...hoping to stay there for a night maybe in January. LOVE that resort!!!

Stacie:  Cool shirts girl. Sorry I've been MIA from your journal...I cannot wait to see you and Matt at WDW in ummmm....JUST A FEW DAYS!! Sooo excited :). You've done it girl...made it through training, I'm soooo proud of you :).

Lily: I had to can my LR this weekend too due to leg issues. It's ok...you';re going to do great at the Minnie...you impress me with how strong you came back from your surgery. Amazing!!! :)

Jackie: Yes...you got your Pilates DVD Please let me know what you think and if you have any questions about anything. And big congrats on completing that 5k!!!

SamSam: Wow....2 extra miles on your last LR! LOL. I can't imagine...that's pretty awesome. You are more than ready for the Minnie!

Claire: Mmmm...blackberries. I love them so! I have the bushes in my back yard but the bears tend to get to them before I do. Ouch about the peppers..YIKES!!!! I've done the "eye rubbing" after handling peppers and that is rough too. But it does sound like you had a reaction to the oils...be careful eating them...you may be allergic!

Frank: Italy...SOOOO COOL. You better take lots of pics and share them with the Wishers ;).

Krista: Oh wow...I have the Disney on a Dime recorded to watch. Cool..I'll look for "random marathon dude". Thanks for the tip LOL!

Dana: Wow...nice pace for your 8 miles and that's slowed down for you! That would be my fast pace...pretty awesome girl! You are going to have a smokin' race at the Minnie :).

Judy: Take care of that hamstring lady! I'm having leg issues myself this week and really took it easy. I want to be totally fresh for the races this weekend. Oh wait...did I say "races" "this weekend". YES ma'am...Minnie is SOOO close. Yay!

Michelle: Please share...what Pilates tapes did you get? Would love to know what you are doing. It's great XT for running btw (and yes I'm totally biased and bug people about doing pilates all the time). Anyway...welcome to the team and congrats on the awesome ebay find. Let me know how you liked them!

Debra: Dave Navarro had plenty of eyeliner on . He was in total "look at me" mode...definitely NOT dressed to get lost in a crowd. BTW...loved the shakespearean drama of your post. I was aghast at the treachery of the evil Albert. Anyway...love Shakespeare...but not so much after a long run ;). My favorite, btw, is Henry V for its witty humor and brilliant soliloquy. It *might* actually have something to do with Kenneth Brannagh ;). Anyway...speaking of Henry V this is so fitting as I march toward into battle (ok...the Minnie weekend): "But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive."

Craig: Sorry...couldn't get past "wine bar" and "florence"

Christa:  to your mom and finishing Chemo.

Angie:  I know this has been so frustrating to you. Hang in there and enjoy the Minnie weekend!!! Definitely give Pilates a try! I really think it will help you a little.

Maura: I know how you are feeling...the constant nagging pain while running is tough but it sounds like you have a real grasp on it! I predict you'll have a really successful race this weekend!!!

Carrie: WE ARE SO CLOSE to being in WDW! Woo-Hoo!!!!! Glad the run worked out for you yesterday...I've had my share of those lately...just getting through them is victory :). WTG...cannot wait to see you this weekend!!! :)

Cam: Good luck tonight with W2D2!!! How excited are you for this weekend??? And how cool that Howard is coming along as well!

Solo Kevin: Wow...nice run! Your pace has been great. Are you doing the 5K and 15K this weekend???

Betsy: I still am too chicken to register for my tri. PLEASE tell me I won't drown LOL!!!

Scotty: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

OK....because of the epic nature of my above post I decided to just post about "my world" on a separate thread.

So this weekend I had to scrap my scheduled 6 mile long run. Matter of fact I scrapped it yesterday too...and didn't even do spin class. I've been having some leg/hip pain that was remiscient of the troubles i had in 2006 just on a much smaller scale. So I did my pilates work...but basically backed off anything that pounded the joints. I did 45 minutes of elliptical/stationary bike on Sunday and rested yesterday. I think I'll do 30 on the ski machine tonight. I may be showing up for the minnie slightly undertrained...my endurance may suffer so I have really dropped my expectations for a sub 9 mpm pace for the 15K. At this point i just want to get out there and have fun. I'm just THRILLED to leaving for WDW TOMORROW!!!!!!!!:yay:

I cannot wait to meet everyone in a few days!!! :grouphug:

Amy -- so glad you were smart enough to bag your run. You take good care of yourself. And don't eat all the Mickey Bars with Scott before the rest of us get there! :)

I am so excited! Howard texted me at lunch time that he bought a Wii. I have been wanting one for more than a year but they have been impossible to find. :woohoo: I have been getting up at 5:30 on weekdays to go to the gym and I usually do an hour there made up of one or any combination of bike, strength training, elliptical, and/or C25k workouts. After the Minnie, I have a 5 miler on Memorial Day weekend and a 5k on 6/22 and 7/4, but nothing else on the race calendar. I am hoping to really turn my attention to some cross-training stuff before it is time to hit the training schedule to jog the 1/2 marathon in January. Hopefully some boxing & tennis Wii will make my workouts less monotonous and more effective.
