Wk of April 13 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Ok. I had totally written a response to EVERYONE and I just lost it! :headache: :headache: :headache: I took notes and everything.

So, instead of re-typing...I will say WELCOME to Frank and Patricia! to all those who had bad runs and fighting injuries!

For me... I did 5 miles last night. My mom joined for 3.6. She was sporting her new WISH shirt I got her in prep for Minnie 5K. She was so cute! I also ordered us some from eye2eye and she was trying to decide which to wear for the 5K and which to wear to scream team for the 15K. So cute!

Word to the wise...Do not eat chicken and rice and then go for 5 miles. Mine came back to re-visit me about 45 min after my workout. Yuk! I was slow as molasses in the winter time, but at least I was under a 15 min mile. Really, as much as I would really like to work on my time, as long as I make it through the 15K without getting swept, I'll be happy.

I think that's about all from me...

Stacie

PS. Choc chip cookies are my fav!!! Yum and I am totally a choc chip cookie dough ice cream lover!

Greetings race Team -

I'm cranky today. Grrrr. :headache:

But I wanted to tell you this....

I must have pace on the brain. Driving into work today I passed a gas station and the sign said it was $3.59 a gallon and I thought "Wow, it's almost $4.00 a gallon." Get it? I was thinking minutes! Ha ha ha! :lmao:

:rotfl: SAdly, it took me a while to figure otu what was wrong with that. :rotfl:

COOKIES: OK ...I have a secret :rolleyes1 (and no...it's NOT slice and bake)....but almost as bad. Shhh...come closer.....it's just the Toll House Cookie Recipe. :rotfl: Sorry Scott...I know you thought it was some specially passed down, super secret recipe that exists only in one copy on parchment paper. But..ummm...no.... it's just the Toll House Recipe. :rotfl2: Sorry guys :). I do happen to have an amazing family recipe for the best peanut butter cookies EVER. Yumm-O as RaeRay would say. But unfortunately I don't have any new tricks for the chocolate chip version.

Suurrrrreeee...ok...;) ...right....it's just the Toll House recipe :thumbsup2

I think we have one of two possibilities here:

A. You are telling the truth and it actually is the Toll House recipe found on the back of every single package of chocolate chips sold (and therefore we'd have millions of people baking super good cookies all of the time). Therefore exposing my limited experience in tasting a variety of people's homemade cookies.

B. It is a clever decoy to suffice the needs of many recipe-goers here on the events thread. It gets you out of revealing that treasured family secret that is etched on parchment paper and locked away in a way that only Nicolas Cage could track down in an upcoming National Treasure sequel, while at the same time squashing the debate and allowing people to move on with their lives and not expect mystery packages of cookie goodness showing up at their doorsteps or at the next Disney flavored WISH meet.

I know what I believe.

I've tasted them.

:rolleyes1

:rotfl2: OMG..you are too funny!!!

BTW...will Bingham K. Penguin be visiting WDW for the Minnie Marathon weekend? Will he be enjoying the sights and sounds of Disney as he did in California? Stay tuned. popcorn:: I know you guys were wondering why our wonder twins avatar is now replaced with the mysterious BINGHAM. The secret is out...He goes to races a'la Flat Stanley ;). Here he is resting after the SJ Half Marathon:

Hi all,

I ran 11.2 today. It was a hilly run and I never quite found my groove but I pushed through it. Now its taper time for the Country Music Half Marathon. I know I just came out of my post ING rest period. I know that means that my entire training period for this race was 2 weeks of mediocre runs. Oh well. Its a weekend alone with Dh so I don't really care what my time is. (yeah right! Mr ITband issues claims he is going to smoke me......)

Cecilia No more injuries/bad stuff allowed in your house. We are going to enlist a few Disney fairies to cast some happy spells. Hope your son feels better soon.
Thanks Maura. My son is basking in all the attention he is getting with his new cast. I expect that the excitement will wear off tomorrow and he will start to get annoying. The Dr told him no wheels and nothing that takes your feet of the ground. He hasn't had both feet on the ground since the day he learned to walk. I expect it will be a ling 4 weeks.

DS (19) applied to Manchester Univ (yes in Manchester UK) and got his offer letter!
Wow! That is so exciting! My roommate in college majored in Languages but not in the UK! She speaks 7 or 8 fluently and can understand more than a dozen more. Last I heard she was learning some new dialect of Chinese.
As difficult as it may be, its looking more and more like I may have to become an early morning workout person. Does anyone have suggestions on how to convert from a night owl to a morning person without too much pain?
Bill- Coffee. Lots of coffee. Oh yeah, drink the coffee in the morning but not in the afternoon. As a matter of fact don't drink ANY thing caffinated after about 9 AM. Once the coffee addiction sets in, you will force yourself to get up early so you can drink more coffee.

the sign said it was $3.59 a gallon and I thought "Wow, it's almost $4.00 a gallon." Get it? I was thinking minutes!
I love it. Thanks for giving the clue or I would still be wondering why that was so funny.

Amybeth - The Nestle recipe is for choclate chip cookies and I specifically remember that Scott said he liked your white choclate macadamian nut cookies...... You are holding out on us here.

All this talk of cookies is not helping me watch what I eat at all. I am alone in the house with left over chocloate fudge birthday cake and I can hear it calling me...

Stacie - Thats cool that your mom is running with you! And don't worry about being slow, just think of it as getting more for your money.

Krista - your picture of Hines hanging out under the crib reminded me of my chow/sheperd that we had when our children were born. She stayed right next to them as babies. With my first child, I would actually have to carry the baby outside to get the dog outside. Good thing we lived in Florida at the time.

Patricia _ Welcome and goodluck on the C25K. Alot of people here have had great sucess with it. Remember that consistancy is the most important part of any sucessful workout program. If you don't have time to do that particular days workout, do as much as you can and try again tomorrow.

I forgot a bunch of people. I am so sorry! I am just not good at this. I guess I have to make a list or something.

Cecilia

Just a drive by to stay caught up....

Stacie
- Nice run! I really hope those eye2eye shirts work out for you guys. I have to wait at least an hour, preferably two after eating before I get out there and run. The only things that don't affect me are energy bars, gels and bananas.

Allyson - Congrats on the run today! It's so cool when you can look at your accomplishments like you did...great job!

TXAng - Ok..changed the avatar just for you :thumbsup2 i hope the last few posts answer the mysterious penguin question :rotfl: Check out my blog for more penguin related info ;)

Maura - Geesh, that's early to be working out...I run that early twice a year...WDW half and WDW full..LOL

Krista - Add me to the David Cook bandwagon. Love that dude. I was a bit weary of his hair when the show first started but I think it's tamed down a bit. The guy sure can sing and is one of the few idols ever that I'd say I'd buy the album when it's released.

Carrie - I'm a night owl and sticking to it. I just can't do mornings LOL

NE Pats Bill - Good to hear from you...sounds like a hectic schedule for sure. I bet just getting out there for a few mornings will automatically get your body adjusted...at least I hope it's an easy transition.

Claire - Yeah, I've see those swinging skating handlebar things as well and they do look like fun (but a lot of work!)...lately I've seen a lot of cross country skiing rollerblade things too. I'm not good on blades or wheels, so I have to stick to regular shoes.

Leana - Have a great trip!! Good luck in the race...I'd love to make it to Vancouver someday, it just looks so beautiful there...be sure to take some pics!!

Angie - Notepad is your friend.

Cecilia - 11.2 with the hills does not sound like fun! Have a good taper...I love the CM Half and Nashville as a whole...I'm jealous!!

Aimster - Love the Daisy photo :goodvibes: Love the Bingham photos :goodvibes: Love your new siggie photo :goodvibes: See a trend? Glad to see you back in a good mood and knocking out some good runs!! (nice job with the 6 miles today!!)

Scott's World - Just a disclaimer about Bingham...he's in no way making fun of that other Bingham, we respect him a lot! But what else are you gonna name a racing penguin?? Details of his trip to San Jose are in my blog (shameless plug) and I *hope* he'll be making the trip to WDW...there is a certain mouse or two he needs to meet!

Hope y'all have a nice day! (that was nice and Southern :) )

Allyson: Oooh, seeing the start to a marathon. It's so exciting! Be careful--the feeling is highly contagious! That's when the whole idea that I might someday want to do was embedded in my brain.

Lily: Wow, triple-dipping on the outdoor exercise! :thumbsup2 I'm glad you're enjoying your girly skirt; I play with the idea, but not sure how I feel about showing that much leg.

Scott: Vanilla isn't bland! It's classic, it's subtly sophisticated, the confident person's ice-cream of choice. It's the white shirt of ice cream, always appropriate, always tasteful (tasty). Vanilla is th foundation os so many good things--sundaes, banana splits, mllkshakes. It's both a comfort choice & the cutting-edge choice for hipsters who know to eschew the flavor of the week. I think it's a perfect choice for you and for Scott's World! :goodvibes Woo hoo, Scott's World, party time! :woohoo: But do I understand you that you attribute refreshed legs to time on the elliptical? Yo, Chicago Mike--you hear that? :confused3

Aloha Jeff: Hey, it's still a good idea. And I love that people are getting their names on their shirts! I'll eventually be able to put together names with handles, faces, and stories!

Maura: Don't worry--you'll get your bling. And what better way to be able to brag about the destination than by talking about all the obstacles on the journey--isn't that what the best travel narratives do? Talk about the trials overcome & the inner strength discovered? Gotta love a good story with a lot of conflict!

Carrie (and Scott): Yeah, DOOD and I watched the Nova Marathon Challenge & thought lots of what they showed was cool. But we also wondered why they omitted some training issues. We wondered if the team was sponsored by Tufts for a research study and hence the focus on some things?

Carrie, you are one heck of a scrapbooker! What an eye for color & composition!

Liz: You must be so proud of DS for being accepted into such a challenging (I presume) program at Manchester University. It sounds like a dream college experience. (Says the girl who went to a party school.)

Patricia: Glad to see you're willing to hang with us & all our quirks.
W1D2 of C25K means week 1, day 2 of Couch to 5K, a training program for beginning runners available at CoolRunning.com. Check it out. As Carrie suggests, it's a great program for getting to that distance. And speaking of cool, it's super cool that you have a friend to train with! :woohoo: P.S. Don't worry about keeping up with posting--some of us are loquacious (I've been accused of having logorhea both verbally & in forums :rolleyes1). Just post what you can--we love hearing from each other.

Krista: Thanks for the congrats & info about your R/W intervals. For longer distances I suspect I'll still do the intervals but I'd like to be able to run a 10K distance, I think. (We'll see what the body says). I used to eat Chubby Hubby, but it gave DOOD issues--like I was sending a message or something. :rotfl2: Wish Stephen good luck on the tri on my behalf! And I hope you have plenty of  days as the weather gets nicer & nicer.

Angie: Awww, we know you think of us, so I'll just make up what you said in your lost post! You're so witty and generous! Btw, I can't imagine how excited you must be for the Minnie! Almost there! :woohoo:

Leana: I hope Vancouver rocks for you--I can't even imagine the sight of all those people! I'd be overwhelmed. But you, I think you're going to work your way through the crowds in good time.

Claire: I think Rowling's planning her own lexicon/compendium & raises the issue for future sales (to charity, right?). She's pretty savvy. My protein bars this time around--I'm trying to find a recipe that I actually want to eat--include oats, peanut butter, nuts, dates, SF chocolate pudding, milk, a few chocolate chips, and vanilla. Oh, and the protein. Pretty darn easy to make, but pretty darn bland, too. (Plus, my carbs/protein ratio was off; so much for trusting online recipes without calculating them out first.) Great job with the WOs and even better news about the Praxis! :cheer2:

Amy: Amazingly, WISHers are about the only folks who think I'm at all funny. I'm usually the "straight man" in my group of friends, I think and they're real cut-ups; the monkey story would have had them commenting that I don't take DOOD's professional life seriously enough. Plus, my ILs can't stand my sense of humor. Okay, so DOOD laughs--but I think it's at me most of the time and not with me. (As if I really know the difference.)

As for the super secret recipe--I love Nestle Toll House Cookies. But don't play your accomplishments down; not everyone can make them well. I've tasted many a botched batch. You'll just have to make us a few so we know what cookies made with love taste like. P.S. On second thought--I like Scott's ideas better. You're a sneaky one, you are. Regardless, there's a very necessary taste test in my future!

NE Bill: Awww, I hope your schedule allows you to settle in to your training program. I admire how much you manage to do you given everything! :thumbsup2 And Wow on on the events your kids are into, and their commitment/success in them. You must be so proud of them--and a good role model. I'm more of a night person myself, so know real suggestions--unless you live with a morning lark like DOOD who is willing to strip the bed every morning to get you up. :lmao:

TXAng: Yeah, that's my parents for you. They can't help but compare my abilities with DOOD's or my brother's; my brother is the family athlete, and you know how important keeping those family roles stable is! ;) Their reaction was a bit painful to hear at the time, but wasn't a surprise. That's why I'm so in awe of all you WISH parents, because I know you all encourage your children to be athletes & to enjoy just being active. :cloud9: In my mind I get to see everyone's kids grow up at WISh events, while I get to be curmudgeonly Aunt Debra who'll steal their Mickey Bars if they're not careful.

Allyson: Hey! Congrats on W4D2 today. How did it feel?

Stacie: As a veggie, I'll have to try really hard to avoid that chicken. :rotfl: It sounds like you narrowly avoided disaster, yay! I happen to think deciding on the events' outfits central to one's training, too! :thumbsup2

Judy: Pace on the brain! :rotfl: When you realized that the gas price didn't convert over to minutes, did it make $3.59 seem that much cheaper than $4.00?

Cecilia: I have to say I'd be willing to put my money on you, although I'm sure Mr. ITBand has the best of intentions. I'm also betting the competition will help you offset your training runs! Enjoy your couples time at CMM, even if it means elbowing each other during the course a la Run FatBoy Run!

Scott & Amy: I'm surprised such a celebrity as Bingham K. Penguin isn't wearing shades to protect his identity. :cool2: Certainly there should be photo opportunities at the Minnie for his WISHer fans!

As for me: I've had an off-kilter day, not the Disney kind either. My schedule must have anticipated NE Bill's question about a.m. workouts, because I was unable to get in my WO this morning. That means core work tonight and, hopefully, some time spent outdoors in the marvelous 70+ degree weather Pgh is teasing me with. (I have noticed it seems to get cooler every weekend. How is that fair?)

Hey all,

I'll be the first to suggest it here. If gas hit's $4.00 a gallon, we all leave our cars :drive: at home, and either bus it, run it, or bike it to work.:yay: We're all WISHers, right?

Plus that leaves more income for the important things like ice cream:mickeybar, beer :drinking1 , Toll house and Macadamia Nut cookies, and the next race trip to Disney World or Disneyland.

I'm heading out for a 6 miler after work, thundershowers permitting.

Suurrrrreeee...ok...;) ...right....it's just the Toll House recipe :thumbsup2

I know what I believe.

I've tasted them.

:rolleyes1

Well in her defense.

Putting the recipe on the back of the bag is NOT enough. Trust me. I made them off the bag. MIne tasted somewhat like charcol briquets:scared1: So apparently SOME people have the knack and some people (Like me!) should not be allowed to ATTEMPT to bake :lmao:

Hope everyone is having a great week. This thing is moving so fast this week it's hard to keep up.

I am looking for advice... Am I being a witch? Here's the deal. I went to the gym tonight and did my TM. Then I was working out in the weight room. Dad and Junior are in there. I would think that Junior is 11 or 12? He was logging in as Dad and seemed to me to be clueless (and when he asked ME if he should use the belt on the ab machine I flat out asked if he had been trained. He claimed he had. I told him I didn't give advice. Dad of course says NADA!) Kid just flitted from machine to machine. And based on what I know he was clueless on what he was doing. Then Dad leaves. :scared1: So I read the sign outside the weight room. Minimum age 13 with training AND ADULT supervision. (I don't think that means Dad is somewhere in the Y!) So on my way out I mentioned this to the front desk. But I really want to call tomorrow and complain. I don't think I should have to dodge junior while I am in the weight area. Am I wrong??? (I have no kids, can you tell)

GOOD EVENING TEAM!!

ok going to try again. Going to start where I posted this morning..

Leana I hope you have lots of fun on your vacation and I can't wait to see you at MINNIE :)
Claire CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR TEST RESULTS :dance3: I do remember one thing I wrote in my post I lost earlier: I understand the addicted to school thing. It took me a total of 6 years to finish my undergraduate Engineering degree. I have only been done a year and I could sooooo go back for masters. PLEASE DON'T TELL DH I SAID THAT :rolleyes1
Amy I really hope your run went well. Back is ok :upsidedow And actually yesterday I did my 6 am Body Pump then I ran after work. Yes as I have said before I am psychotic. But this is my last week for my early morning work outs because I have to be at work earlier starting next week but I get home to my kiddos earlier
Patricia Good luck starting your plan tomorrow. You will do awesome, I know that because you are part of the WISH team now!!! That's really cool that you have a friend who can help you work toward your goal. DH and I used to train together and we got each other through our first 10k and 1/2 marathon
Bill I got tired just reading your post between work and kids. I used to be a completely NOT MORNING PERSON!!!! But it got to the point that early morning was the ONLY time I had. For me I literally had to FORCE myself the first couple of weeks and make sure that I went to bed early enough to be able to get up that early but it has become pretty much habit. But I still have to literally force myself a lot of mornings knowing that I will be soo mad at myself if I don't do it.
Stacie Good job on getting in the 5 miles!! I'm sure your mom looks adorable in her shirt . I wonder if my mom would want to wear one of mine!?
Judy:hug:
Scott Thanks for the notepad tip :lmao:
Cecilia Awesome job on the run and happy tapering!!!
Debra Thanks for realizing that I do think of you guys, sorry you didn't get your workout in. Yes I am very excited about MINNIE!!!! :dance3: :dance3: Thanks for asking.
Jeff I work an hour away - driving so not running, walking or biking, I wish I could. Great suggestion though. So you get rained out there too?? I'm ok in the rain, but I don't like to run in the lightning.

As for me: did 4.1 in 39 minutes.
Have to go get the kids ready for bed.!!

CarolA: I don't think you're wrong. If Junior isn't trained on the machines he might hurt himself. Even if that wasn't your primary reason for mentioning it, that's a pretty darn good reason for alerting the front desk.:upsidedow And since respect for others is one of the unofficial rules of the gym--albeit one that's often broken--I think you have every right to mention it anyway, regardless of his age.

Aloha Jeff: I agree with you about the pedestrian lifestyle; I try to live one as much as possible. Of course, it might be more pleasant for you most of the year, given your locale & all... But the more money to spend on Disney and cookies is certainly speaking my language!

Angie: I just substituted a shorter WO tonight than I normally do, so I wasn't a total slug. Oh, and I simply must comment on another speedy run of yours! I hope you're feeling fine, and you seem to be operating near the top of your game! :)

I don't think you are being a witch at all. There are a couple of issues...one being safety for the kid (and others) in the weight room. You really have to respect the machines or you could end up hurt. Another issue is the fact that you pay to go to a gym like that with the expectation that the rules will be followed. If one person sees that going on then how long will it be until there are a bunch of untrained unsupervised minors in there messing around and disturbing those who need to work out.

I love kids, but IMO rules are rules and you have every right to notify the Y about what took place so that maybe it can be properly addressed in the future.

Thanks guys!

When we first started going there they had a staff member work in the gym area in the evening. That seems to have disappeared. I think that's the thing I am going to ask why we don't have. I checked with Waldo and the other Y he goes to has someone there!

There have been other issues with the lack of a staff person, but this is the first time I have felt like dealing with them. I will call tomrrow when there is somoene in managment at work.

Jeff, I don't run or walk to work but I do take the subway. Does that count? Pubic transport.

Cecelia,.... Christie Cookies. Great treat when you do the Country Music. Have fun! (I miss Nashville!)

Stacie, my time today was slow too, but I kept saying "I am ahead of the sweeper" LOL!

Gotta go. Waldo is having car issues so I have to pick him up at his car place!

Allyson – So, how did W4D2 go today?

Stacie – Are you and your mom doing the 5K together? That’s awesome! I’ve been trying to convince my mom to do one, too, but haven’t been successful yet.

Scott – Aha, it WAS a penguin! That’s too funny. Sounds like y’all had a blast at the San Jose race. It’s beautiful up there, isn’t it? I love the scenery of Northern CA.

Debra – I can’t imagine you being the straight man or curmudgeonly. Sorry to hear that your folks aren’t as supportive as they should be. Even if it's expected, that doesn't make it any less hurtful. I’ll say it again – that’s not right.

Carol – Nope, not witchy. There are reasons for the rules, and one of the biggest reasons is so that no one gets hurt. I’d definitely mention it to someone.

My XT today consisted of toting the baby around the grocery store in the Baby Bjorn. Very interesting, especially when trying to pick up heavy items from the bottom shelves.

We did go for a family walk this evening after DH got home. Nothing spectacular, just under a mile of leisurely walking. Tomorrow is W1D3 of C25K!

Amy, I love Bingham K. Penguin! He's too cute!

Aloha Jeff I have actually looked into taking the bus to work. I'd love to but my normally 20 minute drive would take me 2.5hrs on the bus!! Eek!!

Carol, no you were not being a witch at all... but I also think parents let their kids run around too willy nilly these days. He could've hurt himself or you!

Me? I had a horrible run. Awful. I was all set - I was test running an outfit for Saturday (shorts, wicking tee and pigtails) I was ready to get one last good run in before the race... Well.... My warm up included a nice, helpful fight with DBF, followed by early run ankle pain (which is new, never had that before), choosing the wrong setting on my Nike+ and then realizing it .5km in and trying to change it.. in trying to change it I accidentally switched the music from my running mix to shuffle songs and my next two pieces of music were ballads.. then I had to take off my armband again to switch back to running music.. One of my ponytail holders fell out of my hair so I had to try and fix my hair while running.. oh and I forgot my favorite - CHAFFING!! Woot! (Yes, I used BG, apparently not enough).

I finished with 1.77mi, totally defeated. I was so distraught I cried right there on the trail - I felt like a huge baby, but I was -and still am- pretty upset. I really do not feel prepared for Saturday now at all. :(

Morgan: Welcome to pre-race drama & trauma. What happened is NORMAL before your first big event--it seems like the stars align to guarantee your misfortune & to allow the gods to laugh at you. And it somehow always seems to happen during taper. Now, yours is particularly stressful with the fight with BF, but I hope you feel better knowing we've all been there. So if you can, take a deep breath, relax, and know you'll do just fine. (And while I can't guarantee it, even the ankle pain might be related to the pre-race anxieties; I'm not dismissing it as phantom, but given your situation it wouldn't surprise me that you're hyper aware of things.)

TXAng: Oh, but I LIKE curmudgeons; some of my best friends are curmudgeons. Thanks for the warm words; you don't know how much they mean to me. And you--your day sounds like you're getting plenty of upper body WOs. Good luck with D3 tomorrow!

Wow this thread is flying once again. No way can I get to everyone. Couple of things.

Carol, as I recall from my training oh so long ago, I believe a certain age is too young for children to begin weight training. As our guys were in gymnastics, they used their bodies as weights, never the machines at the 11, 12, 13...ages. I think if you call you should ask the policy of the gym for that as well. Their bone/muscles are still developing and I believe harm can occur with the weight lifting at that age. Safety is of course another issue. When kids are not supervised it is dangerous for all involved.

Mmmm Toll House Cookies. Mmmmm

Morgan, don't fret. You'll do well. Have a good rest day tomorrow. Sorry about the fight w/BF.

NE Bill, I don't have the secret. Can you start work a bit later and mabye ease into the morning w/o routine. I'm sorry you are struggling with that. You are certainly a busy family, ask your kidlets for suggestions on getting Dad into some sort of w/o routine. Maybe they can feel like they are helping and you might be amazed that they will find your solution and all will be well in NEPatsFan-ville.

Took off tonight, it was nice out so DH took me for a ride in the Bird.

Morgan: So Sorry to hear all the stress and stuff you went through on your run!! It sucks, but hey, just think I don't think it could get any worse. Now it can only get better, so hang in there even if it is by your fingernails!!!

About the massage, sorry I didn't let eveyone know I was getting one done. I will get a heads up the next time I get one. I will probably schedule on after I get back from the Minnie. I get one once a month.

I did my Mount Trashmore today after work and it was very windy up there and had dirt and sand everywhere. Kept a good pace under 15min, so still hanging in there for the Minnie!!

Have a good evening everyone.!!
