Good luck with that meniscus scope job. I've noticed that many people go through that and get no swelling and are back up and moving in no time. I hope you fit into that group. In my case I had a lot of swelling and fluid build up, which set me back a few weeks. The best part was before when the surgeon came into the holding area and wrote YES in pen on the correct knee. Good for you planning to build easy after, and good luck with the return to running.

Christa

$65 is getting up there. After being in London last month I promised to never, ever complain about prices anywhere in the USA, including the Disney empire. Here is a sample of what Lesley and I paid, in pounds, for stuff in London. Since the current exchange rate is just a bit below 2:1 you can double these prices to get it in $. During the trip Lesley kept telling me to stop doing that, but I told her , hey I am able to multiply by 2.

London Eye 28 pounds per person
Tower of London 18 pounds per person
St. Paul's 10 pounds per person
Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason's 55 pounds for 2, w/o champagne

And the topper of toppers, which I still cannot believe, a quick first night dinner for 2 tired travelers at Pizza Hut, 30 pounds :scared1: . No, I am not making that one up. Who could?

Keeping this in mind helps me when I see the quoted prices at Disney. About the only thing that I really cannot accept is paying the Disney prices for bad meals. Admission prices, race costs, and the like are up there, but "that's what things cost in 2007." Repeat 100 times until I actually believe it.

Ah yes, today's run. It was 34 degrees and really windy out there today on the track. The backstretch was straight into the wind and when you turned into it the wind stood you right up. I was planning to go a bit over an hour today and when Martha said she would run 8 miles I happily volunteered to run next to her. I have to say being next to her was really cool, as every time her pace quickened or slowed I noticed it and could ask her if it was intentional or not. Her toughest mile was 5 to 6, when we went through a 1/4 about 10 seconds slower than the others. She told me she was working through a stitch, thus the ease off in pace. When we hit mile 7 she took off like an F-16 and I asked her is this was on purpose, which is a nice way to ask your wife if she knows what she is doing  . I mean 1 mile is a long way to kick in. She told me, yes, this in intentional, and I had to push my pace to keep up with her. I did get the half mile split in 4:52, so we were clipping right along.

I will take exception with Martha's comment on our variable pace. Our 5K split was 32:40 and our 10K split was 65:25. By my calculations that means our 2nd 5K was 32:45, which seems fairly consistent with the previous 5K!

So I got 8.11 miles at 10:14 per mile. The last time I did that distance and pace was the first 8 miles of the Disney Marathon. I think I've made the step into what I think of as fitness level one of my training. Level 2 in my mind is the fitness to run a good half marathon, and I hope to be there by labor day. After that I'll push it up to the marathon training, because, just once, I'd like to have a smile on my face the last 10K of the Disney Marathon.

And, of course, with one detour, running the Tower of Terror 13K on Saturday, October 27. That is, to the night, the 30 anniversary of the night we met. I know, I'm no Cary Grant, but I'll recognize this evening by standing in the starting corrals with my wife, under the TOT.

Thanks so much for the welcome! I am so excited to join such a motivated and fun group :)

RedDragonThose are some awesome times! Excellent work. I only wish I could swing the airfare to come to the ToT race. That sounds like SO much fun.

tiberius I've seen mentions of that book before, but I really appriciate the first hand knowledge. I really want to accomplish this, and it's so helpful knowing that others have been able to pull it off.

I ended up fitting in another walk today, because I knew the weather would be icky the next couple of days. It was my longest walk yet, right around 4.25 miles and we took exactly 1:20. That's about a 19 min/mile pace for 4 miles! For most of you, I know that is so so slow, but for me that's awesome. A few more weeks of training, and I know I can do the 5K at a 16 min/mile :) I also took the pup for a 1.2 mile walk in about 23 minutes. I was really trying to work on my stride and posture, so I wasn't was worried about moving quick. Almost 5.5 in a day---I never thought I could do that this soon after surgery (3 months out).

We'll see how my legs feeling in the morning :)

Christa - Hooray for new bike shorts!

bekkiz - Welcome!

Martha - GREAT run! You'll be passing everyone if you keep this up.

Craig
- DH and I had similar conversations when we were in London. (Fortunately, it was '03 and the exchange rate was only about 1.65). He kept wanting to convert everything to $$; I kept telling him to just enjoy it and shut up about it. I'm dying over the London Eye - it was only 10 pounds when we were there! (And DH thought that was too much... I just read your post to him so maybe he'll stop complaining about how expensive that trip was!)

I'm sulking today. I've been trying not to admit that the pain in my right foot was PF, but everything I've read has pretty much confirmed that it is. I talked to DH's boss's wife this AM, who's also a runner, and she looked at me and said "you have to stay off it." That was so NOT what I wanted to hear, but so what I knew already and just didn't want to admit to myself. I guess it will be the bike for the next few weeks. I really want to do a 5K on the 29th, but I guess I need to wait and see how it feels.

Jackie

8.0 miles in 83:03!!!!!!!!! That's 10:23 per mile average! Aaaaa!! I have NEVER run that fast for that long a distance! OK, so it wasn't consistant 10:23 pace, and there was one mile in the middle where I had a stitch so that mile was 10:42, but the last mile I ran in 9:50!! Woo-hoo for me!!! I was/am totally psyched about that effort.

Best of all, I had DH on my shoulder the whole way. It really makes a difference running with someone. We were at the high school track and he was running in the outside lane from me so he actually ran further than I did. That's good b/c my pace usually holds him back so this was good for him.

Christa: I did think $65 was a bit high for a race, but I'm willing to pay it for that race. I love that time of year. We'd love to have you join us!!

WTG on the run! That rocks the house!
I love that time of year too so we will just have to see about the ToT race. I know what you mean about the difference that running with someone you  makes. DH and I trained and ran Goofy together and it really brought us closer together. I guess pain and suffering bond.;)

Jackie

20 years ago I developed PF at a time when I was running a lot, and running the fastest I ever had before or will again. Thus the injury. I was turning out PR's every race so I refused to stop, and yes it hurt like hades.

I got it under control with 3 steps:

1. Shoes with a lot of support and cushion,
2. Customized orthotics this followed the contours of my very-high-arched-and-rigid-feet precisely and kept the plantar from overflexing with each stride, and
3. Ice. Lots of ice, tons of ice. Filled dixie cups with ice and iced down the hot spots in the ball and heel before and after each run, and again just before bed. Before kept the spots cold and the swelling down before running. After got the swelling under control by freezing it after runs. Before bed put the fire out before a night's rest and really helped.

Add to this I also quit wearing loafers which looked sharp but had no support of the planter. It was a slow road, but I beat PF, and haven't had any trouble since.

Also, you may want to do lots of different training, not just running. Doing some running, biking, x-training, and lifting will get you fitter and stronger and put less stress on the plantars.

Good luck. Many runners have faced this problem and beaten it. I hope the same for you.

Angie—great job on the 8 miles! Wow, what a pace!

Kevin—glad to see you’ve been able to keep up with your workouts with all the other stuff you’ve got going on. Nice job on the 3 mile pace! So you’re going to go for Hal Higdon’s intermediate II plan for Goofy? Yeah, that is really ambitious. I almost went for the int II but decided to do the int I and I just modified it to get a few more longer back to back long runs. One thing I didn’t do that he did suggest was to run the Saturday shorter LRs at race pace. I tried that for a few of the runs and when I got up to about 9 miles Sat/17 miles Sun, the 9 miles at a faster pace really caused a big mess for the 17 on Sunday. I just felt really sluggish and the Sunday run was not fun at all. So I ended up backing off the Saturday pace and doing it slower than the Sunday run. It just seemd to work better for me. Anyway, good luck picking the training program. Good to hear from you!

Dave—nice job on getting out there for the LR. Good for you for taking it easy, especially to give your body (or booty!) some time to rest. Have fun on the day trip getaway next weekend!

Martha—wow, Friday was NOT your day! Sorry about your luck. Awesome job on the 8 miles! Good for you for making Craig run in the outside lane of the track. :)

Christa—nice job on the 8 miles. Uphill both ways??? You sound like the old grandparents telling stories of their walks to school 85 years ago. In the snow. Uphill both ways. You know come to think of it, never once in those stories did I hear anything about RUNNING to and from school. 15 miles round trip or something fun like that. No water stops and wearing cotton socks. C’mon, grandma—step it up!

Laurie—great job on the run! You’re speedy!

Kristi—wow, cool story! Sorry that Molly didn’t make it. There’s always next year. We’ll be looking for you guys on tv, keep us posted when you find out an air date.

Howard—Hi! Glad to see you could make it out for a run. You and Cam have been so busy lately, it makes me tired just reading your posts.

Tiberius—welcome back!

Mel—Nice job on getting out there for the run even when you didn’t feel like it. Hope your foot is feeling better. Your 90% mental, 10% physical comment made me laugh because it reminded me of a good friend I have at work. He runs the Flying Pig marathon every year, but he doesn’t run at all during the 8 months of time between the end of the race and the beginning of training for the next Pig (he really needs a motivating group like us to keep him in check J ). I’ll convince him to do a 10K or some other race with me once in awhile during the year, and in trying to get other guys at work to run with us, he’ll tell them, “Oh, c’mon and do it with us, running the race is 90% mental and 10% physical.” I always tell him, “Dave, the only reason you’re saying that is because you’re only doing 10% of the training you’re supposed to be doing.” J One of these days, his lack of training is going to catch up with him and he’s going to literally fall apart on the race course. Or maybe I’m just hoping it will catch up with him…..

Lily—Hi! Glad to see you like working with the trainer and hope it continues to go well.

Kathy—good luck training for the 5K. Hope your surgery goes well and you’re probably smart to start back slowly after that. Did you say Lynne was going to do 5 hours on the bike trainer?? That’s crazy!!

Bekkiz—welcome!!

Leana—Way to go on the run!

Craig—nice job on the run. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s possible to finish any marathon, any time with a smile on the face for the last 10K. :confused3

Despite a busy work week, I did manage to keep up with training. I got in 2 bikes, 4 runs, 2 lifts, and one swim. Let me tell you about that swim. Ummm….it sucked. I forgot how hard swimming laps really is. I have a sprint distance tri in 7 weeks and I really need to get the pool time in, but I sure hope it gets easier. About this time of year, I always get really ambitious and start ramping up my biking and think, “hey, this tri stuff isn’t too hard.” Yeah, then I get back in the pool. Lynne, I have complete admiration for you being able to finish a 2.4 mile swim (oh, and then following it up with 112 on the bike and 26.2 on the feet :scared1: ). I know how I’m supposed to swim (technique), but I just can’t make it work too well. I end up out of breathe in two laps and wonder how in the world I can run for hours but I can’t swim 50 meters in the pool without grabbing the wall for a breather. Oh well, it will get better, I know I just need to get more laps in.

Glad to see everyone’s having a good Easter weekend. Can’t wait to start back to work tomorrow! Have a great week, guys!

Steve

Martha - Awesome run!!!:cool1: :thumbsup2
Craig - What a way to spend a 30th Anniversary to the night you met. I told my wife and she asked me if I remember the date we met...silence, very uncomfortable silence (we met playing volleyball and SHE wasn't interested in me so why should I have remembered it....I know, I know...lame excuse).
Matt - You should be renamed Thunder and Lightning Matt! Lightning for the Speed and Thunder for the sonic boom that follows! Great Ride! You'll be IronManMatt before we know it!
Christa - I agree that $65 is a bit steep for a race...I paid only $55 for the CDC (the Half Marathon in Chicago, not the government agency).
Kathy - pixiedust: pixiedust: to a speedy and uneventful recovery!
Mel - Great job for still getting out for 7!
Kevin - Good job getting in 3 miles with the cold and snow! Good luck this week, hopefully you still get in your runs and posts!
bekkiz - WELCOME to a great and supportive board! Your gonna meet a lot of great people!
Leana - Great LR! Good to hear you made it back through the unsavory parts okay!
Jackie - pixiedust: pixiedust: for your foot. Hope you are able to make the 5K later this month, but be safe about it.

This morning my DW and I woke up early so we could get some training in before an Easter Brunch with her family. I did 30 min on a stationary cycle (my rump hurts, may have to get bike shorts myself, the baggy kind) and some Ab work. I work tomorrow, but then have 3 days off after that so I will get some miles in the next few days.

Happy Training and Happy Easter!

After a total runner's high of a 6 miler tonight in less than an hour, I have high hopes for the next several weeks.

To summarize my week: 12 miles running, 77 miles on the bike, totalling 89 miles! Worked out 6 of the 7 days including a couple swim workouts, for a total of 7 hours and 11 minutes! Definitely personal bests for both mileage and time. And all of it was virtually pain free, so like I said, high hopes for upcoming attempts at duathlons, metric century rides, and tris! Now if only I could just never get deployed...

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the great advice last week. I'm still under the weather but slowly getting better. I took Friday off from work to rest up and got major cabin fever and wasn't ready to take a training break yet so DH and I went for a late night 5 miler. I actually did pretty well. Saturday morning = different story. Got up early to try and get a 4 mile run in on the TM and while all went smooth during most of the run, the treadmill automatically stops after 30 min and you have to reset everything well once it stopped I got really light headed and felt weak so I stopped completely. Only got 2.8 miles in which included my warm up. Oh well. Sunday I skipped my LR in hopes of getting well enough to stay on track this week. Today is another rest day and then hopefully tomorrow I'll get back into my old groove. Setbacks can be so frustrating! I guess in a way it's good though because I actually missed running and can't wait to get back. I need to catch up on all the posts but it sounds like a few of you have done some great training this week/weekend which is super impressive with the holiday and all. Great job!
Kristin

Howdy Strangers! I'm back after a long hiatus from the disboards. Work has been too busy lately, and DH and I are trying to buy a new house and prepare ours for sale. I have done very little in the way of training, but with the Minnie less than 4 weeks away I have to get back on track. I sure have missed you guys. I will try to keep up this week.

:welcome: bekkiz! I love the picture of your schnauzer. I have had two wonderful schnauzers in my life. They are the sweetest dogs.

I am so excited about our newest WISH scream team members (Bill & Lynnda's and Lisa's sons). It is so great to see the WISH team grow.

Better get to work. Happy Monday everyone!

Hey all. Not much to report. I only had a 4 miler to do on Saturday, so I did it on the indoor track because the weather here is pure rotten. I did 4 miles in 46:46. I was pretty happy with that.

Sunday was exhausting. We have a lot of family drama and it's no fun at times. I hoped for the best, but it wasn't meant to be this time. My girls had a happy Easter non the less. I really could do without all the extra candy in the house!!!

Matt - WOW, your amazing with your workouts. I have the hardest time finding the time. That is where I struggle. GREAT JOB!

Steve - I try to swim every once in awhile because it is a great workout, but I am dying after a couple of laps also. I swear my asthma is worse while swimming than running. I am a wall gripper after my laps!!

Martha - AWESOME AWESOME run!! Way to go!!!!

OK, I am at work today. I have more interviews to go through for my assistant/receptionist. We offered the position to someone and then she turned it down because she wanted more flexible hours. She would prefer to work from 6am-2pm. Well, it doesn't really pay for you to work when the office is closed, now does it!!!!

Have a great day all!

Hey all! Just a quick post from me--as I'm sitting here staring out at the beautiful Siesta Key beach drinking my coffee. I know, hard life! Got a 5 mile run in this am--Mel, we left Jamaica Royale and ran down Midnight Pass Rd for 2.5miles and then headed back. Gotta love running the island--completely flat!!! But is was my first run in 3 days, and the legs were really heavy. I hope everyone is having a great week and great training--Gotta run, DH needs my help sunblocking the kiddos!

Mel & Steve~

Thanks for the notes. Spring break (for me) ended two weeks ago. I am through with most of my mid-terms with only one more outstanding (due in two weeks). Things are nuts for sure.

I hope to get back into an exercise and running program soon. I feel heavy... although the scale has been kind so far, it won't last too long.

Keep up the good work! Maybe I can live vicariously through your training efforts until I am freed up (May 22 PM).

Happy training!

:grouphug:

Howard

Everyone read this!
It is for everyone but Steve, Matt, Lynne, and any other swimmers out there I have missed....will really enjoy or be like  !
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/04/07/bc.brazil.amazonswimmer.ap/index.html

DDs are still on break...they go back tomorrow, so have got to figure out when I can WO. We are cleaning the house. I told them that we could take a little break b/c we finished the downstairs.....then we head up.:rotfl: So I am Dising real quick.

Hey all I have been MIA for over a year now but no longer. Well that Swimming guy was totally crazy but it sounds kind of fun at the same time. But this is coming from someone who at the age of 8 wanted to swim a mile. Well I should get back to work.
Erin:surfweb:

:donald: :donald: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am new to this list. I attempted the Donald in 2006 but could not hit the pace requirement (by the way, no medals when swept guys, not even one member of our team who had to leave at the 22nd mile in the full due to health reasons).

I am part of Team Arthritis (Joints in Motion) and am headed back, with my sister-in-law in January, 2008.

I am signed for the 5k (as is she) and she wants to do the full. I am toying with trying the half again, but am still quite heavy and am worried about the pace.

Anyway, I am a Disney nut, and find your posts interesting (I have lurked for a little bit). Just thought I would say hi.

Just back from my lunchtime workout at the Y. 35 minutes on the TM. It wasn't the most thrilling run, but I got my steps in. There were a lot of people running the track and TM's, I wonder if it has anything to do with the 5 mile race coming up this weekend?

Howard - HI!! Hope things settle down for you soon!

Jimmduck - :welcome:

Christa - That is out of control. He swam with piranha's... but aren't there those big snakes in there also????

OK, back to work. I am overwhelmed with no assistant.

XT day today. Will probably lift when I get home.

Today started National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. I ordered a cake for the troops and each shift a meat and cheese tray. We also do a "Cheesy" gift raffle each day. I have to show them I'm not that big of a horses butt. :rotfl: So, if you have an opportunity to speak with a public safety call taker or dispatcher, tell them thanks. They deserve it.

:)

Lily – Glad that working with the PT is doing good things for you!

Kathy – Hope your knee surgery goes well and that you have a super fast recovery.

Jen – She wanted to work 6-2? How, exactly, did she think that was going to work? Amazing. Good luck with your continuing search.

Jimmduck – :welcome:

Well, we decided to go ahead and sleep in yesterday morning instead of getting the run in. We thought we'd try to get home early from the Easter celebrations and run then. Ended up getting home just past midnight, so that didn't work! :sad2:

Oh well, today is another day!
