Wk of Apr 22--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hello! I was reading a funny running book and the author was mentioning that there were several things he DIDN'T like the spectators to yell as encouragement.

I thought I'd ask here, having never done an event, what kinds of things DO you like to hear when you're doing a marathon or any other endurance event? What DON'T you like to hear? What do you find esp encouraging?

I got in 6 miles today, last LW before the Minnie, then had to go to the chiropractor, as my hip was twisted and it started bothering my knee. It's from my shoes that correct my gait. :confused3

"You've only got a 10K to go!" Yeah lady, that's "only" 6.2 more miles on top of 20! Grrrr...

I saw a fun sign on teh Disney CD, which is probably not something I'd want shouted at me either. "Life is short, running makes it seem longer." :rotfl:

I like: Keep it up, hang in there, way to go, you rock, you're winning...:lmao:

I'm no sure that "I can't believe you made it this far!" would typically be taken as a compliment, but it made me feel good when I heard it in January. ;) :goodvibes

Judy - You adress some people by anatomical animal parts, but Vic gets a "sir"? :rotfl2:

Vic - Thanks from me too!!!!

PungoANgie - Way to go!!!!! I vividly remeber when runnign fro 1 minute seemed like an impossible task!

Krista - Any word on SHari?

Stacey--for those races where they print your name on your bib--it's great to here your name called out "Go (insert name) go!" It really was nice to hear that during my first marathon when I was by myself. I prefer to not hear "You're almost done!" or "You're almost there"---what some people consider "almost done" amazes me!:rotfl:

vic--too cool! Thanks for sharing!:thumbsup2

Stacey - "You look really hot in those shorts!" always works for me! ;) I really appreciated the people who addressed me by name and said I was "lookin' good". Or even the people who just clapped and whooo-hoooed! Any encouragment helps really.

Carrie - Because Vic scares me if I don't.

Carrie--Thanks for asking, Shari went into surgery at 1:30, it's 4:15 as I type this and I haven't heard anything yet. Her lower BP # dropped to 80, so everyone is thankful about that.

Stacey--
Good things:
Keep up the good work
Hang in there
You look great, beautiful, etc
Stay strong
Said to me at mile 25 by the CM in Germany "You're doing
something that less than 1% of the population has
done. :goodvibes

Bad Things: Like Carrie said, "only" a 10K or a 5K to go!
You're half way there! :scared:
The finish line is just around the corner! (and another 10 more
miles)--said by a CM in Animal Kingdom.

That reminds me "They added a hill this year" while pointing to Everest was not great either. :p

Krista - Ugh! The waiting must be killing you!!!! :wizard: More parayers coming.

Hmmm, I dunno - When I hear that I only have a 5K left, that means something to me and I can relate to it. "Almost there" doesn't because I need to know what almost is! You know. So I don't mind hearing 5k left.... unless I was on the verge of dying and there was no way I could muster another 5K... well then the person yelling should know better and keep their mouth shut. Anyhooo... I love to read the signs that people have, they make me laugh and that is a good thing. Like "Beer next right" or "We are all Kenyans on the inside". Oh I really hate those people with air horns and when the blow them in my ear as I run by.... like that is going to motivate me! I had a bunch of that at Disney and it kind of got me irked!

Judy - Ha Ha on the Hot Shorts comment. I guess it depends on what the person saying it looks like!

When i feel like crap--I HATE HATE HATE hearing "You are almost there--you can make it" or any variation.

I know others feel similarly...b/c we stayed and watched the entire full last year until the very last runner came in.

When you get to those at the end who are too pooped and have that obvious expression of "Is this ever going to end"....on their face.

Well my teammate and I were situated at the end just at that bend where you turn to the right and head right into the chutes.

We were telling them you are here--the finish line is right there. Had a few that I think were ready to deck us...had some others who didn't believe us...had a funny moment where one woman told us it wasn't and we said--no it is...Look...she looked up and took off running.

In this case they were really at the end and the finish line was LITERALLY around the corner. But I hate hearing statements like that when you can't see the finish line. Call me a pessimist...but until I see the finish line....I'm nowhere near close to finishing.

One lady appreciated that when her hubby and baby found her in EPCOT...as they came to the full finish chutes--I told her to turn the stroller around so baby would be facing the cameras (I think the baby was still in an infant seat). She was exhausted and of course didn't think of that...I found her afterwards and she thanked me for suggesting that.

I think I saw someone one year who had a sign that said something like "Sweat is sexy"....that one made me :lmao: . I took a picture which exists in my home somewhere.

Cheerleaders are wonderful---with noisemakers and everything. But as a team cheering person--we have found that some spectators absolutely hate folks like us. But we have found time and time again--that for most busting their buns to finish a race..they appreciate that foolishness.

OH and the year I participated with the flu (totally do not recommend that approach  )..

At the end in the last half mile..I got so sick (not literally :rolleyes1 ) of hearing in the last mile not less than 100 times..."Are you okay" (no--but I'm finishing go away!) "Is someone with you?" (Do you not see my TNT coach standing next to me you silly TNT coach from another chapter who does not know me?) "Do you want a drink of water, you should really drink" (Yeah and I'll puke it right up on you--but thanks for offering for the 50th time in the last 5 strides).

Of course if you ever see someone who looks out of sorts in a race--it is your duty to check on them..but when it looks like they've got it and they have someone with them and the paramedics aren't wrestling them to the ground to make them stop running...most likely they are fine and will be hightailing it to the med tent as soon as they finish!

***This was a public service announcement from someone who ran with the flu, the full in 2005...and the last mile was completed with her nose plugged and mouth covered b/c if she didn't she was going to make a few messes in World Showcase. So if you wake up with the flu...JUST SAY NO and ditch the medal! :thumbsup2

People in grass skirts, funny hats and doing the hula work well for me too! I love teh foolishnes. I love the fact that people are out there fro teh runners, all the runners.

It was a little foggy, but you get teh point. ;)

OH This is rich! Talking about what we do and don't like to hear in a race!

Do like!
1. Anything that talks about how good I look! (even though I don't)
2. Yelling my name!
3. Saying I am doing great...cow bells....foolishness rocks!
4. I always ask people if I am winning...sometimes this messes with their minds, but I love it when they play along and say yes!
5. I also like to say to people (during a marathon)......."I thought this was a 5k"!:lmao:
6. I also like to say, Did we pay for this pain.

Don't Like!
1. Telling me it is down hill the rest of the way! Liar!
2. the 5k and 10k comment really doesn't bother me too bad but I hate it when people say ALMOST THERE at mile 20.

I normally like to talk to people and cut up during a race, but some people don't like that in a race. And anyone out there who is cheering for me really is a super person and I am really thankful they are there. Stupid comments and all!

I love reading all the comments you guys like to hear from the spectators. I love the ones who are foolish out there ones too. They are definitely the most encouraging. The last 10K I ran right in the last 1K a girl yelled that it was all downhill from there. I grumbled to the gal next to me that it would be pretty cruel if she was lying! Thankfully she was right an it was a great downhill stretch!

I got an AWESOME 3 mile training run in over lunch! I hit the pathway downtown with a bunch of other Calgarians out enjoying the sunshine and warmth. Trust me - the 57 deg felt like summer today! Anyhow, I got the run in at 31:33, a 10:31/mi pace which is really speedy for me. Here are my splits:
10:29
10:34
10:19
So I kept it pretty consistent. I was very frustrated thanks to an incident at work so maybe that fueled my run. Let's just say that I'm not a newbie engineer and I don't appreciate being treated like a kid and yelled at in a meeting by my coworker when I've been working my behind off to save her project.

Oh well, almost time to head home, then run to the airport since my mom arrives tonight for our Minnie trip! Thank goodness I'm going on vacation soon!

Oh, by the way....I actually decided to start a blog since apparently I really like telling everyone about my training, so feel free to check it out!

http://cdnrunnergal.blogspot.com/

I have three posts up, so it isn't really exciting yet, but wanted to share with everyone anyways...

WOW....this is a chatty group this week. I realized that I haven't had time to post in a few days and I come back and there is 16 pages!! YIKES!!

As for training, I am taking it easy this week. In fact, today was the first time I got out for some light running. I did about 2 miles very easy. I think I am ready for my race sunday....Actually, I am VERY excited! Thank you all for the support and encouragement over the last four months....I am not sure I could have come this far without all of you!

Now to catch up with everyone:

Stephanie--Great news about Phil's biopsy!!

Krista-Sending :wizard: and prayers for your sister. I hope all is well with her. Also, I love your reasons for hoping you are not pregnant! It is funny how we all think about our race schedules when figuring things out in our daily schedules.

TxAng--You can definetely do the 10k. You should go for it!!

Cam--Hope you are feeling better!

Angie--Wow! A 25 page paper and 3 finals!! Good Luck! BTW-I think it is so awesome how excited you are about graduating! It is a great accomplishment..so no worries about talking about it here!

Jeanneg--Good Luck to you and Nancy on your half this weekend!! I will be thinking of you two while i am doing mine!

Ok, I am still several pages behind, but hopefully I can catch up later on while watching my NJ Devils beat up on those Ottawa Senators!!!!

Sorry to all those I missed!!!

So much to catch up on, but I will say, everyone seems to be doing great! I love hearing about "real" races, because I have no experiance, so any and all stories will be enjoyed by me :)

I got 2 miles in yesterday. My knees still felt pretty sore from the long walks over the weekend. I decided to just do a strong 2 miles, and went about 16:30 for each. Knees still were mad at me, but I think the rest day from Tuesday was good. I'm hoping that I'll feel up for 3 fast miles tomorrow (closer to 15 mpm for the 3).

Today I got some actual XT in. I used to be a swimmer/water polo player (for like 10 years!), but I haven't been in the pool since my surgery. (My back injury was probably from swimming, and I had to stop). I was only in for 30 minutes, but it was nice, and I kept moving pretty much the whole time. I did a lot of leg work, because it's easier to keep my spinal alignment if I'm not using my arms. Luckily I also know a lot of arm work, and was able to do a bit of that.

Just as an aside, I coach swimming, so if anyone ever needs pointers or ideas for workouts, just let me know. I'd be happy to help!

And I am desperatly trying to convince DH that I should go to Orlando for both the ToT race and the 1/2. He's not buying it, and believe me, I'm using every trick in the book :lmao: .

Did an "easy" 10 miles today at a 9 MPM pace. It was HOT though. 88 when I started at 1200. And I ran out of water. Why did I run in the heat of the day?
My shoes did OK. I don't know if it was the shoes or my socks though. May run/bike/or rest tomorrow.

Oh Carrie, thank you! :yay: Wow, does that bring back great memories! This pic and Cam's, Krista's and Dave's Mickey pictures. I am feeling the love again for marathoning!:thumbsup2 Do you have more pictures to share? I would love to see more!

I bought new shoes today, Saucony Omni 6, I wore them for my speedwork on the treadmill and oh my...I was like the WIND!!! I hope they feel this great when I go on a long run this weekend.

Colleen

I like it when people pick you out of a crowd to cheer you on. I was running up one of the little hills during the 1/2 and weaving around all the walkers. I remember someone saying "way to push it up the hill Jennifer". I was like "right on".

But the best things I EVER heard during the 1/2 came from the WISHers. I teared up all the time because I had "buddies" all over the place.

I promise to NEVER EVER say "It's only a 5K left"!!!!!!

Seeing people in costume acting foolish
Volunteers yelling out what fluid they have in the cup they are holding out
Seeing kids w/ signs cheering for their parents
Hearing people cheer on the charity teams
Hearing the guy in Epcot tell me "you're on pace to break 5 hrs!" That was really useful and wished for information!:cloud9:
Character interaction- One year Hades from Hercules was right outside WWS harassing people. He was wearing skates and would grab on to people's shirts and act like they were pulling him!

Dislikes
"You're almost there!"
Having a group of 70+ yo 50 Staters tell me 'you can do it' as they passed me:sad2:
