Wk of Apr 16--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I did 3.6 miles today 13:16 pace (although it about killed me) It was hot. Darn hot!! I am now officially worried about the heat for the Minnie :sunny:

Dave-take care of those shins. And dont worry about complaining here. That's what we are here for. It is hard to keep your motivation at peak levels all the time. Keep up your fitness with other things right now. And like the others said-dont leave us. It doesnt matter if you are in full training mode or not. Good luck with PT.

Amy-glad you had a good time. There are alot of places I would like to go, but we cant seem to tear ourselves away from the World either.

Judy-good for you for getting back on track. I know how hard it is to do that after vacation. Glad you had such a great time.

Minnie-1 day of school is not going to be a big deal. Family time is very precious. Have a great trip.

Krista - I am so excited for you!!!!! Only 24 days until WDW :cool1:

TiffJ Thank you for your comment. I struggled with this one since my son is in middle school (6th grade) but finally decided that one day wasn't enough to leave him home. I can't wait to see WDW through his eyes again :goodvibes

Dave take care and rest if need be there is plenty of time until Marathon weekend 2007.
Kevin, 19 credits and a full time job; running should be your outlet not another full time job. Like many others say, go for the full or the half not both and enjoy the rest of the weekend, you will need the break.

Carrie additional PD coming your way.

Good training all, I have to get going no time to post to everyone, sorry.

Training for the day, did 4.3 miles - the .3 was a warm up and the 4 was kind of a tempo run for Sunday's 5 mile Valley Forge race -in 33:10. I love the Garmin's ability to give me mile splits - first mile in 7:50, second mile in 7:36, third mile in 7:22, and fourth mile in 7:25. I am hoping for a 37 minute 5 miler on Sunday and think (after today's run) that I should be right on.

:cheer2: WOW! You are crazy fast!!! :cheer2: Good luck on your upcoming race. Can't wait to hear how you do!!!

Hi Everybody!

Just stopping in for a quick "hi"!. It's been crazy busy at work this week!
Hope everyone is doing well.
:wizard: :wizard: for those with injuries.

Will try to check in later in the week.

Happy trainings! :) :)

Morning Everyone,

Well - I did my 4 mile run last night......didn't do as well as I would have liked to I averaged an 11.08 min/mile (at least that's what Garmin said)....running the four miles in 44.34 minutes.

Yesterday, I was exhausted and my allergies were really bugging me during the run - so I did take walking breaks here and there.

It was kind of funny, I forgot that the running club that I joined ran last night also......I kept on bumping into them while running.....although they just started out and I was kind of towards the end of my run. Maybe next week I will join up with them - it's always hard to know what my workload is going to be and that has an effect on going running at all.

Tonight is my WW meeting and then afterwards I hope to go running, although this time on the threadmill. Saturday I'm supposed to do a 10 mile run, although the weather looks like it is going to be awful.....I might have to do it on the threadmill.

Sunday is the MS walk - it's also supposed to rain then.

Well, I'm going to take off now....have to finish getting ready for work. Have a great day everyone.

Jodi

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Thanks for the support everyone, and for listening to me vent about my shins. I was having a down day yesterday and needed to be "bucked up" a little. So I appreciate it.

I had my PT appointment yesterday. They did a good job, I was really happy with the attention I got. The person I met with is also a runner, a certified athletic trainer and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He did another full evaluation of my feet, legs, and hips, and had me run on the treadmill too. I ended up running over 1.5 miles on the treadmill - I wish I had changed my shirt because I was dripping after that. He said that he thought he could help my shin problem with some more stretching and strengthening exercises, and that if I was game he'd like to try that before going the orthotics route. I was down with that. So he gave me some exercises to do before I start running to "activate" my muscles before I run, and he gave me some more stretches to do. He also said to try to run on some flat surfaces right now and stay away from the hills - so no more Mt Hope Cemetery for me right now. He then wants me to come back in a week and he'll give me some more strengthening exercises. I was in there for nearly 2 hours. Again, I was really impressed with all the attention I was getting. It was much better than last fall when I was told "you have shin splints, stop running". So I have some work to do now.

Greetings Everyone: I wanted to touch base with everyone about the socks one more time. So where it was left is that I heard from SockGuy that there is a minimum order of 120 pairs of socks (which was news to me). Right now we are somewhere between 70-80 pairs of socks for the team. I crunched the numbers, and we could get the socks if we paid more for them. So instead of ~$5/pair of socks they would cost between $7-$8/pair. I know this is a lot different than what we had originally talked about so I want to see if people would be willing to pay that amount. If that's OK, I would go ahead and place our order. I'm not sure if we could get the socks in time for the Minnie, but I think we could. Let me know what you think.

Good morning everyone!! :sunny: Hope that everyone is having a great week. I am almost embarrassed to post my 5 mile time after Goofyguy's anticipated 37 minute 5 miler. ;) I walked 5 in 1:11 last night, Hines did 2.5 with me until I took him home, I was dragging him behind me. I don't know what his deal was, I'm wondering if it was the heat, it was about 80 degrees when we started and he has a nice thick black coat. I think I'll do my 4 miles around 8:00 tonight so it's cooler for my baby. :goodvibes I have 11 this weekend, I'm looking forward to doing it.

Dave-- :cheer2: that is great news about your shins! It sounds like you found a great doctor.

Carrie--Weren't family vacations the best? Loading up in the station wagon for hours, playing while your parents drove half way across the country? I have 4 sisters (yes, 5 daughters for my lucky Dad!) so we were packed in the car, I remember fighting over the center spot in the front seat because nobody wanted to sit there. Those were the best times!!

Jodi-- :wizard: on dealing with your allergies!! If you do get to do your 10 miler this weekend, definitely soak in an ice bath or you won't be able to get out of bed Sunday morning for your 5K! I hate ice baths, but I swear by them, they are the best things ever.

Kim--How was Boston??

Tiff--The Minnie is coming right up! It's the same day as the Flying Pig, so we'll all be racing together. What time do you start? The Pig starts at 6:00, I'll be thinking of all you Minnie's.

Amy--Chris in the bottom 3????? No way! :confused3 I tried voting for him for way over an hour and could only get through once.

Have a great day everyone!! Talk to you guys later.

Hey Guys!

Well, my first 5K is scheduled for Saturday. It's been beautiful here all week but now they are predicting Saturday to be cold and rainy! Yikes! I don't mind running the rain...could be interesting. Any advice from those of you who have done races in bad weather conditions?

Amy--Chris in the bottom 3????? No way! I tried voting for him for way over an hour and could only get through once.

Krista, I have ALWAYS wondered if AI plays with us a bit. It seems that all the "favorites" end up in the bottom 3 at some time to create drama. JMHO though ;) . I may be dillusional but I think chris is amazing...and I loved his rendition of "What A Wonderful World" :lovestruc . Anyway....I've always wondered. The day that Kelly Pickler ends up in the bottom 3 I'll be sure it's slightly fixed, her fan base is HUGE is seems. I knew Ace was going home but thought for sure it would be him and Elliot in the bottom 2 NOT Chris. Although I like Elliot....he seems so sweet.

Okay folks....back to running talk. Sorry for hijacking this thread  .

Dave: I would pay additional for those cool socks! Thanks again for coordinating this. I'm so glad you had a successful PT appointment.

Jodi: Hope those allergies feel better. It's so hard to run when you are congested :(.

Thanks Carrie- I hope the orthotics do the trick. We'll see. I must admit I feel my motivation dropping lately. That's why I haven't been posting so much lately. I actually even feel a little bad complaining because there are so many other people here that have so much more going on. I've been so frustrated with my legs lately. I think I was in denial for a long time, but they really hurt pretty much constantly. I haven't run at all for a week (I've done the elliptical twice), and yesterday was the first day I didn't take any Allieve. I still feel the ache a little, but it wasn't so much I needed to take some anti-inflammatories. After reading Marathoning for Mortals I really got to thinking that it wasn't normal to be getting through my runs by taking so much anti-inflammatories, and I was definitely taking them before going out to a run too. Right now I don't see how I can do a marathon next January when I can't even run three miles without feeling like someone is hammering spikes up my shins. I've been feeling like the gains I made over the past 3 months are slipping away, and even the ability/motivation to get out there and run seems to be slipping away. I think about how it's going to hurt when I take those first steps to run, and that causes me to not want to get out there. Thanks for listening to me complain. I'm hoping my appointment with the physical therapist helps today.

Check the siggy--i UNDERSTAND your pain!

Injuries are tough.

You may look into some cross training--bike or swimming.

If you have access to a pool and a swim vest--you can even look into water running. (vest allows you to stay vertical--you do this in the deep end and your feet do not touch the ground. If you get a good cardio workout running--this simulates running very well in an impact-free environment).

If you can do elliptical--that is supposed to work wonders. A couple seasons ago--we had a girl on our team (local team) who was sentenced to the elliptical for 2/3 of her training--and she was still able to run at Disney (once she was cleared for running).

Complaints are part of the training and it is what we are here to help with.

Walked today--first time since early March I have had multiple workouts in one week.

30 minutes....14.7 mpm pace! Woowoo!

(Treadmill though!)

Minnie -- I am so glad you decided to take your son out of school. I really do NOT see an issue when parents do that, as long as the kids aren't behind in school and make up the work. I think family time is just as important as time in the classroom, if not more important. You are going to have an awesome time together! :goodvibes

Tiff -- I am with you on the heat thing. I am definitely worried about the heat and humidity for the Minnie. I am hoping it will motivate me to finish even sooner, to get out of the sun! :sunny:

Amy -- Your vacation sounds absolutely wonderful! I am sure you needed it after the huge time commitment of the production, right? I can't believe how much you worked out while you were away. Kudos to you, my friend! :thumbsup2

Goofyguy-- your pace is amazing! Congratulations!

jodi -- I have heard that allergies are worse this year than ever, all over the country, and that April has been particularly terrible. Take good care of yourself. Hope your meeting went well last night. I can't even imagine what it would be like to make lifetime! :cloud9: You and Sunny are my guiding lights in that regard.

Dave -- your appointment sounds awesome! I am so glad you found someone who knows what he is doing. I have become such a HUGE proponent of stretching ever since I seriously impaired my hip during the 1/2 I am sure due to insufficient stretching ahead of time. Cannot wait to hear whether this improves your pain level. Good luck!

Lisa -- Congrats on getting back into a routine. I know how crazy busy life gets with little ones and work, so you must be so proud of yourself!

I have nothing to report, training-wise for last night. It was supposed to be a non-wogging day, so I didn't feel too guilty about standing around talking with my neighbor and watching her gorgeous twin toddlers play outside. I so rarely get home in time to enjoy the daylight. Howard and I have two nights with DD17 before DS12 gets home Saturday, so I am hoping we can do some fun stuff with her. There are so many changes going on in her life right now. She just officially registered for UD (which means Mom & Dad paid housing and tuition deposits! ;) ) and we are going to "Delaware Decision Days" on Saturday for accepted students, even though she has already made her decision. I figure the major-specific session and the walking tours of the campus, and hopefully, an opportunity to learn more about campus life and meet some people in the marching band/colorguard will all make it a very enjoyable day for her. Of course, the whole time I am there, I will be looking forward to seeing DD when he arrives home that afternoon! :cloud9: In any event, I will try to get out for a wog or to the gym (depending on weather) around 6 am to get enough miles in this weekend.

I feel like poop today. I didn't feel well last night but we HAD to go food shopping. I had such a bad stomach ache I thought I was going to pass out from the pain right in the Stop & Shop. Then last night I didn't sleep well, just to make matters worse. So this morning the alarm went off at 4:30am. I got up and turned it off and went back to bed. :sad2:

I think I left my motivation on the ship. I really could have trained this morning, but, well, to be honest, I just didn't feel like it.

I'm having too many days like that lately. I've been doing this since November and so far April has been my worst month. :rolleyes2

But here's two things to share with you all....

Last night I stopped to get gas in my car. DH was driving and he likes to set the odometer whenever he gets gas because he's always checking mileage. Anyway he left it like that so I just reset it this morning when I left for work. So when I pulled into the driveway it work it said 13.1. Thats exactly how far I live from my work. I'm taking it as a sign.

Speaking of work, the Extreme Makeover people are doing a house right by our site, so they have asked if they can park their trucks here and also use a couple of parking lots to shuttle spectators back and forth. I never realized that show was such a big deal. But apparently it is as they are expecting THOUSANDS of people here over the next week or so! :faint:

The other thing I forgot to mention (OK guess I had three things to tell you) was a funny story from my vacation last week.

When DH and I were on the track I set my Garmin for time, because to be honest that's all I know how to set it for so far. Well, apparently I had the GPS going and the Virtual Partner because when I was done it told me I had beat my partner by 17.5 miles and I had done 22.3 miles in 50 minutes! Whooo hoo, baby! Can you imagine?? I'm getting pretty good, don't you think?!?! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: OK, so it didn't take into acount that the ship was doing 20-some knots.....Humor me here. :lmao:

My apolgies to everyone. I haven't been responding to a darn thing all week. I'm reading all your posts but I am so pressed for time at work since I am STILL playing catch up. Plus I am involved in Take Our Children To Work Day which is next Thursday so we are really crunching here. I can't wait until it's over.

But Dave....I'd pay extra for the socks. Or buy a couple more pairs. Either way is fine with me.

Okay, I'll get to the tummy, motivation and sign stuff later. I just had to say that had me :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: Judy, you totally crack me up! I LOVE the humor you bring to this board. I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to spend time with you in person to enjoy that sense of humor. Now I really wish I were doing the half in January with you -- we'd have such a great time!

I'm sorry you weren't feeling well last night. And it probably wiped you out for this morning, but we expect you to get out of that bed and onto the DM tomorrow morning! I think you need to find a movie tonight that you really want to see and set it up for tomorrow morning to motivate yourself out of bed. And, just think of how awesome you are going to feel driving that route in the future, knowing that you will be able to walk all those miles!!! Awesome motivation!

Oh Cam, you are sooo sweet! :goodvibes Thank you for saying all those nice things. I KNOW we'd have a great time!

I guess I just wasn't feeling all that well yet this morning. but geez, I get mad at myself when I don't train. :furious:

I am in the middle of My Big Fat Greek Wedding which I had seen before and really like. Yes, you're right - good movie helps! :teeth:

BTW, did I mention the Captain of the Liberty was a GORGEOUS Italian studmuffin!?!?!?!? :faint:

LOL :lmao: :lmao: That GREAT! Just make sure to download that off the Garmin and into your computer so you have proof!!

Thanks to everyone for their advice on my training situation. I think that a couple of you probably had it right-- I think Goofy is doable so long as I lower my expectations and take it really easy on the half come race day. There will be times when I'm going to miss a run or two and that's just going to have to be OK. I'll really focus on training hard now and hopefully that will help a bit come fall. As my boss put it as well... " You need to have something going besides school and work, otherwise you'll burn out." Running= Cheaper than therapy, Better for you than Booze. :thumbsup2

I ran Tuesday evening--- 35 minutes (3/2) and averaged 9:22/mile pace. I will need to go run this evening, but as we speak I am being talked into playing golf this afternoon. Either way, I'll get the run in.

I need to get to class-- Happy training all!

Too funny!

Reminds me of last week--we went walking between the girls gymnastics classes. I didn't turn my Garmin off---on the way home in my purse I hear this beep. Garmin is still going. Evidently---it thinks I can run/walk a 2:00 minute mile.
