Wives Tales/ Superstitions

OH on the baby ones. My X MIL would never let anyone tickle DS's feet as a baby. She said it would make him stutter.

I heard one time that if you put a green light bulb in your front porch light fixture it would be a signal to the aliens you were willing to be abducted

Its better than a RED light bulb! (If you don't know what that means, think about the "red light district"!)

I never heard of "rabbit rabbit" either!

What does saying "rabit rabit" on the first of the month do? I've heard of all the others but not this one. I don't get it???

I never thought about that before until my sister saw my neighbor's red light. She asked me if she was letting the neighborhood know that she was open for business.

I bless myself when a funeral procession passes - supposedly it keeps you from death. Hey, it's worked so far, so I'm not going to tempt fate by stopping this habit!

Saying "rabbit rabbit" first thing on the first day of a month is supposed to bring you good luck, double good luck if it's your birth month.

Interesting post.

I never walk under ladders.

We have a black cat, so that doesn't bother me.

Throw salt over my shoulder if I spill it, and I do knock on wood.

Weird, I just never thought about these until you posted it!

Never heard of the rabbit thing.

My Grandmother would have had a fit about the rocking chair too.
My oldest sister said if you rock a chair with no one in it, you are inviting ghosts into your home.
My rocking chair...in the basement!

Funny this topic as just brought up. I have been organizing this last week. I was going through my books and found an encyclopedia of superstitions.
Here's a blurb on the "Rabbits": (I never heard of that until reading this post)

"A luck bringing custom found all over Great Britain is to say 'Rabbits' or 'White Rabbits' once or three times on the first day of the month. It must be said early in the morning, before any other word has been uttered, otherwise the charm loses its force. In some districts it is considered necessary to say 'Hares' or 'Black Rabbits' when going to bed the night before, as well as 'Rabbits' or 'White Rabbits' in the morning."

Sounds like a lot of remembering and you have to be compulsive. ;) :jester:

I think it's Good Luck that scares me, or at least Talking about it!
I don't want to jinx any good stuff,'cause we've had a lot of bad stuff this year. Things are better-and I AM knocking on the wood of the computer table right now! Maybe it's the Greek term HUBRIS.... Anyway....I can't get in trouble for what I DON'T say!

I always knock on wood. I hate walking under ladders and am not fond of black cats.

I do the ‘knock on wood’ often and the salt thing sometimes. I’ve never heard of some of the others mentioned. My great-grandmother was very superstitious and my mother told me some of the things that used to freak her out: opening an umbrella inside the house, putting a hat on a bed, stepping on cracks in the sidewalk. Some of the other things are more like omens: if your nose itches, you’re going to kiss a fool; if your palm itches, you’re going to spend a lot of money; if someone drops an eating utensil, that means company is coming (knife = man, spoon = woman, fork = fool). (I often yell out, ‘company’s coming,’ when someone drops a utensil.) Years ago, someone gave me a rabbit's foot, and I often take it with me - in my purse, tote bag, or suitcase.

I always knock wood three times and cross myself when I see an ambulance. That's about it.

We do the "rabbit" thing here the 1st day every month . . .it's something that I grew up with and when I got married, DH has grown accustomed to saying it . . .and our kids have grown up with it too . . .

My mom still calls me and asks if I said "rabbit" . . .:)
