Not much an hour away. How about an hour and a half away and then I could say Lake Michigan and many things in Detroit. :)

An hour away.....Our state capital, Kelloggs and Kalamazoo Air Museum.

3. Niagara Falls American or Canadian Side (1/2 hour away)

4. Tours of local architecture...Frank Lloyd Wright and parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

5. Buffalo Zoo, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Science Museum, Shea's Performing Arts Center (major Broadway shows)

6. Tour of the Underground Railroad...passed right through here on the way to Canada.

7. A TON of summer festivals...Allentown Art Festival, Taste of Buffalo, Italian Festival, Chicken Wing Festival, Juneteenth, Erie County Fair, Canalfest...any many more...

8. Martin's Fantasy Island (amusement park..15 min. away).

9. Toronto, Canada is 1 1/2 hours away and makes a great day trip.

OK, I know that was more than 5, but Buffalo has a lot to offer despite it's reptutation for snow.

(Numbers 1, 2, and 5 are all in Forest Park in St. Louis)
 
From where I live in Rhode Island:

1) Downtown Providence. Have some world class Italian food up on federal hill. If you go this week you can catch sight of Richard Hatch coming in and out of the courthouse. Go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo on the Providence/Cranston line.
2) take the ferry to gorgeous Block Island
3) check out the Newport Mansions and the tennis hall of fame
4) go visit Mystic Seaport and the aquarium
5) Within an hour you can hit Boston, Salem, or Cape Cod, but if you feel like checking out small town New England and seeing weird sights head on over to Exeter and see Mercy Brown's grave - also known as the Rhode Island vampire.
