WiSHers doing their first FULL Marathon at WDW - Jan 2012

I'm having all sorts of doubts! My left calf was bothering me a bit after my 20 mile run. 2 weeks later I wanted to do another 20 miles but had to stop at 15 due to calf pain. On Saturday I tried to walk 6 miles on the treadmill and was in pain for 3 days. Now I'm trying to rest it but I find it really, really stressful to do nothing! At least it doesn't hurt or feel tight anymore...

Amanda

Hi old DIS friend:hug: You can do this. Yes it is terrifying and yes it is hard, but you have put in the training. Rest until the race. I'm just doing the Half this year, but I'm planning on being in the World Showcase late morning/early afternoon on Sunday to cheer on the runners. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you! Can't wait to hear your report and I'm even a bit jealous that I'm not doing the full this year. Good luck!

-All-

Nerves are a normal thing that we all have, though many do not voice concern about. It is a normal release of energy. We all tend to think back on the what if’s in training, the nagging injury and looking forward to the holy smoke, am I really ready. It’s a marathon after all.

Enjoy your taper period. Backing off and allowing the body to recover through these last couple weeks seems counter intuitive. We all work on projects and most 18 week projects are capped off with a flurry of last minute activity – cramming for the end if you will. With your training programs, you have this time that is seemingly free and mentally you want to do something. You need to do something. In fact you are doing something, you are gaining strength. The body needs time to absorb the work performed. It gains strength through the cellular level repair work that is ongoing.

Use this time to think about what if felt like the first time you hit 5 miles on a run. It was tough wasn’t it. Now look to your last good long run and think about how you were just getting warmed up at the 5 mile mark. Who would have thought that a 5 mile run would seem so short? You are there. The hay is in the barn. In 10 days you will be running the streets of WDW. Whether you run is good, bad or ugly, it is a celebration of all the work you poured into your body this fall.

On race day, get up, follow your routine and head out to the start. When you get off the bus, monorail or out of the car DO look at the lights and follow them into the staging area. You will be entertained by some, wondering what the heck about others and realize that everyone has that look. You know, the little nervous look you get when you look just to the side of someone’s eyes. The stress, the crows feet, the tense face. We all will have it and we all deal with it in some way.

So before leaving your room, check to make sure you have your shoes on. OK, the list is a little longer but do make sure that your bib is on or in hand, you have your fanny pack or whatever you plan to carry and that you have your gear bag if you plan on checking gear.

As you come into the staging area, look around. There will be a few light trailers out providing lighting. As you enter, there will be a long set of tents on the right. These are the baggage check tents. To your immediate left is an information booth as well as a few charity team booths and a food booth. The runners retreat is at the end of the line. Across the sea of folks is a stage with a live band (usually). If you look closely, these guys are playing their second gig of the day… The first one starting 8 hours or so earlier. If you are with spectators, you will need to stay in the staging area with them.

There will be a few porta potties along the route between the bus stop and staging area. There are also a few in the staging area. There is a porta potty city on the other side of the checked bag tents. The bag tents serve as the security checkpoint for the race. Only runners or other credentialed folks are allowed through the tents. Be prepared to show your bibs to go through these tents. If you arrive on one of the first buses, you will find that there is a very limited crowd on the secure side of the bag tents. If staying on the staging area side, you will see that the crowd only gets so thick. Once it hits a certain mass, it never seems to grow. That is because folks are moving through the tests into the next section.

About 4:30-45 ish you will hear the first announcement that it is time to head to the corrals. This is a 0.6 mile walk. If you are looking for a very front of my corral spot, you may want to head through the bag tents early and congregate to the far left after passing through. There is a parking lot road at that end and it is fenced off with temporary fencing. The fence will be pulled back when you are allowed to head to the corrals.

Many of us wait to the very last minute to cross through the tents. Keep an eye on the lines for the tents. The line for checking bags can get long. The tents are separated alphabetically by last name… though it is really up to you to decide what you last time is on race day. I choose the far tent to drop my bag. One year it was the A tent and the next the Z tent. I use that tent because the lines are generally shorter. It is a longer walk post race, but a lot less crowded.

The walk to Epcot is on Mocking Bird lane to cast member lane to Epcot Drive. There will be potties near the start. Study the maps in the race book and final instructions. The arrows will help you figure out in advance if you go left or right as you approach the corrals. Once in the corrals, stake you claim. Note there are speaker in each corral on runners right as you stand. You want to look at where these are and avoid standing next to them. They tend to be just about a foot above ear level and well above hearing protection thresholds. I go just past one and camp. Then once we start to get near start time, the crowd will compact. I am usually just before the next one after compaction.

It you are wearing trash bags or throw down clothing, throw them over the side of the fence. There is always one of two fools who just drop them. They are a tripping hazard. Your corral will move up with each release of the one in front. If being in front of back is important, keep in mind that you will be moving over and over and that you will need to maintain relative position. As it is your time to start, you get you own little fireworks display and flames at the start. Embrace the warmth of the flame as you pass under AND DO NOT forget to start your watch. It’s about 15 steps and you go from bright and warm to cool and dark. The full moon will be out so that will help. Keep to your pace and keep you head kind of on a swivel for the first mile. The first mile is the exit to Epcot.

Finally, have fun. You will all do well.

Awesome Jenny! I'll be watching the half from GF and I will look for you! Thank you!!!

Thanks Coach! I've forgotten how nervous I was at my first half. Hope my first full (and Goofy) goes just as well!

We are almost there people!
Do what you can to relax and enjoy the taper. I have a another massage for Monday after work to get out all the knots before Marathon Sunday arrives.
Hoping most of you make the WISH meet on Friday!

Keep up the good work and stay positive! :thumbsup2

I was browsing through the finishing times from 2011 full, and there were hundreds of runners that had 7:00+ net finishing times. I was just wondering what the reason for that could be? Did they escape the sweepers? Surely they all couldn't have been up in the A and B elite corrals with a huge head start on the pace clock. I'm very slow so this information sits nicely with my nerves. :thumbsup2

Just wondering!

First a little lesson for those who may go and look and not understand the terms

Clock time = When the very first gun goes off for the first wave start, the race time starts. Runners in the first wave run times close to Clock time and most age group runners are all running here.

Chip TIme - each runner carries a chip on their bib (it's a couple bars glued to the back of the bib. Your personal time on course is Chip Time.

Waves - There are 6-8 waves of runners starting in each race. A wave start is one where only a small group starts every 3-8 minutes. This keeps the course from being over crowded in the first few miles. For the marathon, the last wave starts about 28-30 minutes after the race clock starts.

So with the very last runners, you see that most are running with equal chip and clock times. For some reason, these guys were not registered with a start. They may have come down to the start late or the mat could have died late in the start. If a runner does not register going across a start matt and registers all other matts, they are generally giving the clock time for their race time.

There are a few cheaters who will go and dummy up a race result and try to get into a better corral or jump the fences when volunteers are not looking. Most do not get into the A corral but do get into B, C and D. They just do not realize that they create a hazard due to their relative slowness.

Going up about a hundred runners...

You see a lot of 7:10 runners...Chip Time. These were the last runners credited with a finish. More than likely they were aright around the 7 hour pace at mile 23 as they entered DHS and just lost a 10 minutes once past that point. Note their clock times can be larger than the 7:40 (added 30 minutes for the last wave). There are a few of these guys who started off in earlier waves and just fell apart. Since they had an additional time due to the earlier wave, they did not get caught up in the sweeper.

The sweep time is monitored by a guy on a bike. he may be off just a bit so if you see him, pedal a little harder. Though from what I understand, most points of a hard sweep are usually behind this biker; You may have poor execution at a point and they take folks with him.

In general, once you get into the Hollywood Studios, you are left to finish as long as you are making reasonable progress. The reason this point is last point of hard enforcement is that you are off the roadways from here on in. Just look as you come up World Dr at the traffic. Disney will really need to open that roadway as soon as it can to get rid of the traffic jam.

Thanks Coach for the explanation!
I can't wait to get to HS!!!:)

OK, 6 days left!!!
Who is getting excited or nervous or both?

I'm getting excited! And nervous! My taper runs have been okay to good. The weekend was great. I got some foot pain, but the moving parts feel good.

Wheee!

So four months of training...last run today, only 3 miles and I will do it on the TM at race pace. The last two weeks I have cut down so much on my running it seems weird, but it has given me more time with family and friends that we have had in for Christmas and New Year's.

The house is fairly clean, batteries are charged on various devices, the two college kids leave today, but we will meet back up tomorrow at WDW. They will fly out of an airport nearer to college as they return next week for classes.

Time to pack and fly out early tomorrow. It all seems so surreal in my mind and perhaps when I step foot on Disney property and get my bib it will seem different. I'm sure when I stand in the corral I will think to myself, "what was I thinking when I decided to do this", and how will I feel (emotionally, I know physically I will be exhausted) when I finish.

May each of you have a successful run/walk.

I cannot tell you how jealous and excited I am for all of you!!!!!! You are all going to do great and I fully expect Trip Reports and pictures (if you can) when you are finished! :thumbsup2

This was supposed to be my year for the Half Marathon (the longest I have ever done before were 2 Ten Milers) -- but because of the economy, it will have to wait one more year -- I hope!!!!!

Good luck to all of you and I can't wait to hear how it went!!!!!!! I will be thinking of you all on Saturday and Sunday morning!

Safe travels all! I hope to meet some of you this weekend. Have fun and can't wait to hear the details!

Amanda

Safe travels and good luck to everyone!! I am staying at POP and will be wearing a bright green shirt hopefully with my DIS name on the back...bright blue shorts over capri running tights...if you see me say hi!! I love to see other DISers especially for races :thumbsup2

I'll look for you because we'll probably be in the same corral. We can stress out together. :thumbsup2 I'm wearing a black tech shirt with a sneaker on it that says "My glass slipper" and hot pink, sequined skirt.

Awesome I will look for you too!! and by the way that outfit sounds SO cute!!

In case I won't be able to log on once I get to WDW tomorrow, good luck to everyone.

Tomorrow we will be out on the course. Hope all have restful day today. I dont't have any wish green but I will be wear a black running skirt, have a Mickey tattoo on my calf, and will have my amphipod handheld water bottle and a blue sleeveless.

I was hoping to hear from those of you who did your first full. I can now cross off completing a full marathon off my bucket list. I crossed the finish line under my own steam standing tall. I even had enough left to run the last 100 yards.
