Well, DH and I ran a 5K this past weekend for 9-11. his first!:thumbsup2 He started running do run with me.. how sweet huh? He thought it was something that we could do together.. But I am very proud of him. He was about 2 weeks shy of completing the couch to 5K, and only ran for 20 minutes straight, but he rocked it!!! finished in 34 minutes!! and it was hilly!

training is right on track... I think my long run is 5.5 this weekend and I have my 10K race next weekend.. once that race is over I will begin my 1/2 marathon training.. :scared1:

Tell your DH congrats on the 5K!! :woohoo:

And your comment about starting your 1/2 training in a couple of weeks... I cannot believe the race has come so fast! I know it's still 4 months away, but it seems like I have been planning this trip/race for so long, now this training kicks in!! My dad and I started talking about this trip in April, and it seemed so far away and now it's in a countdown! :hourglass I'm so excited, I've never been to WDW parks before.

Hey all! Sounds like you all are doing fabulous in your training and in your races- Congrats. I am working slowly but surely- just hoping by the Princess in Feb. that my pace will be up to par. I am currently using the Galloway method I guess for just completing the marathon. I am running for 1 minute and walking for 3 minutes. I am up to about 4 miles but feel like I could go forever... except for my left knee. I have already had to see the orthopedic dr. once since I have started and am worried if I push too hard I could make things worse but if I don't I won't make it up to speed by race day. Anyone with any experience/advice??? Thanks all!:flower3:

Oh you guys are wonderful! Thank you for all the encouragement! It seems crazy that fall is here so soon, but the days are getting shorter already. Somehow my runnerbuddy managed to drag me out of bed before sunset and get in a quick run earlier this week (I work night shift, not just super lazy here). The next day we tried out a new trail.. and it turned into a nature hike/getting lost in the woods.. The 85 degree temps outside felt positively autumnal compared with the 91 inside my house with broken a/c, so getting out in any way this week was appreciated.

In more exciting news, my friend is getting an award from her job and invited me to go to the dinner/awards thing with her... and they are having it in the living seas at epcot!! And then some fireworks and desert thing!!! Then we get to stay at the boardwalk! I've never stayed at a disney hotel before! :yay:

That's terrific! You will definitely like the Boardwalk area! :thumbsup2

Your DH totally rocked his 5K. Tell him I say congrats! I'm three weeks away from finishing 10K training. We're right at the same spot. Which half marathon program are you going to use? I'm thinking about modifying Hal Higdon's... to stretch it out a bit by increasing by 1/2 mile per week instead of a full. Hoping that it will be less daunting when I am leaving the house on the long run day.

I think I am going to do a more modified Jeff Galloway/Hal training. I want to run more than the 10 miles that Hal has you running.. I would like to run closer to 14 and then taper off before the 1/2

Tell your DH congrats on the 5K!! :woohoo:

REALLY!? :scared1: and here I thought you have been to WDW before.. fabulous! where are you staying.. are you coming alone or is your dad coming with you.

Never had knee problems, how you researched runner's knee? I think it's where the knee cap moves up and down while running. They sell a band you can put under the knee cap to stabilize it. What is you tried strengthening moves? Don't know how you do it, but I'm sure there has got to be something.

Not the Marathon Weekend. I did Princess the inagural year, but I flew in late Friday night and left early Monday morning. I went to MK for like, 4 or 5 hours, so I missed a ton of the park as well as the other ones. I've done 4 of the 5 DL 1/2s though. It's cheaper and easier to get down there.

I'm going out with my dad, although I'll be there Friday by myself. I'm taking a red eye Thursday and he's flying Friday out Friday morning. We're staying at the POFQ. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities, so when I saw that hotel, I knew I had to stay there. Plus, we're staying until Tuesday night, so I get to go to all the parks and explore this time! We got a great deal on the flight home for like $90 to San Francisco and it doesn't leave until 6:30, so we have a lot of Tuesday we can spend in the park too! :mickeyjum  :mickeyjum

Have you booked your hotel stuff yet?

Hope everyone has a great run this weekend! Hopefully the weather will be great for everyone!! I'm going to attempt 18 on Sunday. Scared out of my mind, but we'll see.

WOW that is a cheap flight home!! non stop? I HATE flying. I flew out to LA a few years ago and it was killing me!! Don't even get me starting on the flight to hawaii for our honeymoon.. MY GOSH was that long!
the 2.5 to Orlando is about all I can take!

We are staying at POR! so we will be neighbors! :thumbsup2 we'll have to meet up! I am flying in on Thursday - mid afternoon.. and leaving Sunday.. I have a late flight on Sun, around 6:30..

I am meeting my Aunt (she is running it with me and she lives in Florida), and I think on Saturday night I am meeting up with a handful of friends from high school that are running it. Not sure where we are going, probably DDT. But I am super excited!!

I can't believe you flew from back east to Hawaii! We flew to Hawaii when I was in college and that seemed like forever. Unfortunately the flight back isn't non-stop. I have a layover in Atlanta. Going out there though, I have a short flight down to LA and then non-stop from there, so it's kind of like non-stop. LA's only about an hour flight, but it doesn't seem that long when you fly it. We'll totally have to meet up! It's going to be a great weekend!!

I need advice.
I was supposed to run a 10K on October 2nd with my SIL but she has backed out on me. Then a neighbor asked me if i'm running The great Cow Harbor 10K run on September 25. Which is next weekend. I know I'm ready to do the 10K. (i think). I ran/walked 5.4 miles last weekend in 1:15 with a pace of 13:55. The 10K starts at 8:30. There is a shuttle back to the parking lot after the race. Reason this is important is we have a family 2nd birthday party at noon in brooklyn. Which means we have to leave home around 11.
II'm trying to decide if I will be pushing it with the timing or if it is doable. What do you think.

It definitely could be doable. It depends on a few things though. How long will it take you to drive home from the parking area? And, there is usually a wait for shuttles back to parking (depending on how many shuttles are running and how many people are using them). Hopefully, the race will start exactly on time. I've been in a few that were delayed a bit for one reason or another...

So (worst case scenario), factor in a slight delay for the start of the race, a wait (maybe up to 30 minutes) for the shuttle, riding the shuttle to parking (how far away will that be?), driving back home from parking, and getting cleaned up and dressed for the party. What does the time look like now? And, will it matter if you come to the party a few minutes late?

Ditto what Meredith said. Another thing to think about along with the number of people waiting for the shuttle is the number of people running it and how long it might take to cross the start line. But unless it's w/ 10,000 runners shouldn't be a problem, and you can always try to get near the front and then run on the right to allow people behind you to pass you.

Plus, I would count on going faster than what you have in training runs. You'll have the adrenalin of the race and all the excitement so you'll run a little faster.

:cheer2:Good luck with the race!:cheer2:

Kind of bummed right now because the training has ground to a halt due to a disc issue in my back. Usually takes 3-5 days before it goes away but I know I'm ready to get back on the road because laying on my back all day is driving me crazy.

Can we get a roster of who is doing the Princess 1/2 in Feb?? It will be my first race and I am going it alone, so it would be nice to have some fellow runners out there......R

Hey everyone, so I'm not gonna start up a new thread, we can edit the title and the main post on this thread quite easily. I'm going to set up a Survey Monkey site where people can vote on the name.

I posted a list of Bios on the main page by just grabbing what you said about yourself in the first post. Obviously they're a first attempt, and anything you want changed, just PM me and I'll take care of it. I did it manually this time, so i basically clicked next and went through the list, if I missed you or your bio let me know.

Thankfully work should be slowing down for a little bit now that we just got this release in. So I should be back around :).

Still to come: the event calendar, fun statistics about the group (number of posts, gender, age breakdown, most uses of the word disney, stuff like that - obviously I'm gonna write a small datamining program to do that kind of stuff).

Run this morning was 6 miles. Beautiful 55-60 degrees outside. Tomorrow gonna do something around 15-16 miles.

Thanks for updating that first post Matt. I know that was a lot of work!

I did manage to get my 8 miles in this morning. It took me 2 hours, so I'm feeling a little better about avoiding sweepers. My half marathon in 36 days (!!!!!) has the same 3.5 hour time limit that the Disney races do. I don't know how they handle anyone taking longer though. They didn't say anything about sweepers, just mentioned the time limit. I guess they have to reopen the roads at that point. Maybe they don't give Finisher's Medals to those taking longer? I have no clue. I guess I'll find out. (Or, more accurately, I hope I DON'T find out, right? ).

I can't believe it's coming up so fast!

I'm also breaking in a new pair of shoes. Hopefully they'll be in prime condition for the race. I had 300 miles on my other ones. (I can't believe I've done over 300 miles since starting this journey in March!) It's obvious where my foot falls though. After just two walks in these shoes, it's obvious where the wear is. That's cool. I don't know what to DO with that information, but it's neat anyway. *laugh*

I'm in!

I did 12 miles this morning with my Galloway training group. We were only supposed to do 10, but another girl and I are going to miss the scheduled 12 next week and both of us felt great after 10, so we went back out for the other 2.

It was an awesome run... it's finally almost reasonable outside (about 68 when we started, 73 at the end), and not as humid. We did a local park with wide packed sand trails. Hilly but the sand was much nicer than concrete/asphalt.

I taped and compression sleeved my problem shin, and so far so good! Those compression sleeves are such a lifesaver.

What was the wear pattern on the shoe? Its information, and sometimes useful information when buying new shoes, but seeing as you just ran 12 miles and have put in 300, something is clearly working with your setup now. You havent had any persistant and nagging injuries correct?

A lot of people sometimes overthing shoes, especially with all of the various options out there. The best shoe is more often than not the one that you feel most comfortable running in.

It's funny because the part that is worn down already (and very visibly so on my old pair) is exactly in the middle forward portion of my foot. All the edges and heel of the shoes seem to have minimal wear. I guess that means I strike pretty hard with the center of my foot. The only nagging and persistent problem I have is blistering on the ball of my foot right under the base of my big toe (probably due to hitting hard with the middle/ball of my foot - that makes sense). I blister every single time I go out whether it's a 3 mile distance or a 12 mile distance. I've tried everything, but can't seem to fix that. It's slowly getting better with time. The blisters are getting smaller and my feet are getting tougher. I'll just have to tough it out I guess!

Once I got out of the 'stability' shoes that the first shoe store set me up with (that apparently overstabilized me to the point that I thought my knees were breaking) I've had good luck with these Nikes. I've had to go up half a size to keep my toes from hitting, but besides that have done fairly well. I had to move from a Nike Moto 7+ (my last pair) to a Moto 8+ (this pair) because I couldn't find any 7+ at the price I wanted to pay. I guess they're phasing them out.

There are WAY too many options out there. It's intimidating. Especially when you keep thinking that if you can find the 'perfect' shoe you won't have any problems at all and can move like the wind and all that... :rotfl2:

Kat - Good run today! Is that trail in Raleigh somewhere? I've got to go to Raleigh the weekend of Oct 2 for the NCSU/VT game (DHs family reunion always involves NCSU sports :lmao: ) and am debating whether to attempt to find somewhere in the area to do my long distance, or just wait until I get home and do it then...

ETA: I'm doing the Princess 1/2 in February too!

Yes, it's in Raleigh, in Umstead Park. Remind me when Oct 2 gets closer and I will give you directions.

Also, you are always welcome to join my Galloway group for our Sat AM run if you want? It's a great group, and the price is right for visitors, too (free)! I can't remember if you are doing intervals or not, though. We meet at either 6:30 or 7AM, probably 7AM by then, and it's always 10 miles as a base.
