its great to see that everyone is really doing great!!!

On my end - my left shin is killing me and bagged my 4 mile run, I am going to attempt it today.

But note to self: wearing high heels to lecture in is not a good thing as BOTH of my shins screamed!!!!

UGH............so it looks like I will be running 4 today, off tomorrow and then 6 on Sunday. I hate missing a 3 miles run, but right now with teaching something has to give!!! ((and that check from teaching comes first))

Okay - I am embarrassed to say this but I flaked on the GR 1/2. I am just not going to be ready - I have been reading books and I am further behind than even I thought I was.

That being said, I did register for the local 5K that is on August 28th so I am not giving up, just being cautious. :( I feel disappointed in a way but I think it is better now than signing up and not being able to finish within the time limit. That would derail me totally.

:(

Don't be embarrassed at all.
I am doing a 5K the same day as you. Good Luck!

I got a lot of "I only run when chased" comments. My response was always, I *am* being chased... I am running from the sweepers!!

I love this, and I will have to use this!

I made my 2 1/2 mile goal last night. .

YAY on 2.5 Great Job! :worship:

Sorry about your shin, have you ever used Bio-Freeze? Another Thread highly recomends it. Good Luck on your 4M

As for me, I had a really bad 2 mile run on Wednesday and I am still getting over that mentally. I have a 3 mile run planned on the beach this weekend . Wish me Luck!

Good luck! We all have bad days, don't beat yourself up over it.

Thanks - I registered for the 5K and am feeling pretty good.
I have had a bad week of running and I am supposed to do a long run tomorrow but today/tomorrow are Relay for Life here and I am signed up for walking at 10pm so I am not sure how that is going to work for running at 630am. I suppose all the walking I will do tonight counts for something right?

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Good jobs on all your runs!! :cool1: Got 7 in this morning, 8 if you count the dog walk, but the lab is so slow, it's a nice recovery walk. I actually saw the sunrise for a few minutes this morning! Wasn't great running into the sun, but a nice change. Don't mean to make everyone jealous, but the weather this summer out here has been absolutely beautiful this year! "Colder" than normal by 5-10 degrees, and we've had coastal fog non-stop for the past 2 months. There have only been a couple of days where I run/wake up to sun. But now I say that, I've jinxed everything and the DL 1/2 in a few weeks will have a heat wave again!! :rotfl: Taking tomorrow off from running, swimming instead, then another scary 16 on Sunday. :scared1: Good luck with this weekends runs and races! :cheer2:

Wow, we sure have a lot of Carolina representation in this group so far! I'm glad! I might actually run into some of you!

:yay:

Swim-mom, it's my left shin too!!

It's still a bit twinge-y but I am considering trying the 10 miler tomorrow anyhow. Even if I don't make it all the way through at least I can walk it in.

Please get compression sleeves they make a huge differance!! I am going to run 4 now, had to bail on the 3 last night as wearing heals for 4 hours lecturing killed my shins. Plus just way too beat.

I ordered the sleeves first from amazon and paid almost $50 --- they my brian started to work and remembered we at WISH get a discount at running warehouse -- so I called them and got them in 2 days for only $30!!

So now I am thrilled I have two pairs one to run in and one to recover in :)

PM me if you have questions, I love mine -- and honestly I could not run without them. Been suffering since the Princess off and on.

I will ask a few questions here if the group will indulge me. :)

How does the sizing run? What brand are yours? How do you find them holding up when it is really hot out?

My name's Katie I'm and ER nurse in Charleston, SC.

YAY Charleston...I went to school down in Myrtle Beach and we used to take frequent weekend trips to Charleston

But note to self: wearing high heels to lecture in is not a good thing as BOTH of my shins screamed!!!!

I feel your pain, literally, I started a new job in downtown Richmond, VA and the walking in heels is utter torture for me!! I have blisters and aches, which of course do not get me motivated for running :headache:

I run in Asics 2150. They hold up really well. I have been running in the various models of that shoe for the past 5 years. As for weather... I think they're okay. We don't really have heat out here unless it is a heat wave. But even then, they do okay. The type you should wear all depends on what kind of shoe you are looking for. For running shoes, they have neutral, cushioning, and stability. (I think that's all) If you go to a running store, they should be able to help with which type. I think it depends on how you run, feet, style etc. When I went, they put me on a treadmill. For sizes, they run pretty true to size, but it's best to get a size bigger, because your feet swell when you run. With the bigger size, your feet don't get cramped. Also, if your shoes are too small, you can get black toenails which is not pretty to look at! But if you have a local running store I would start there. Hope that helps! :goodvibes

Hehe, Kim, I should have clarified! I was referring to swim-mom's discussion on compression sleeves.

That said, I run in the ASICS Gel-11xx series (currently 1140). I need a stability shoe but not as much as the 21xx series that you use, although I have thought of giving them a try. I have been fitted at a running store and then as I need new ones, I find them online or in places that take discounts/coupons.

I also have the problem that my normal shoe size is a 9.5-10 in a women's shoe, and it is tough to find a women's 10.5 in anything.

Therefore I went to a men's shoe, since 8.5 (equivalent to 10.5 women's) is easy to find!

Oh, on the black toenails! I actually have one right now. I read that they are not caused by too-small shoes. It's a combination of the pressure that you put on the underside of your feet when you run and by hill work because no matter the size of your shoe, your toes will still press against the edge of the shoe when you run downhill.

For the Relay for Life they have Endurance Walkers who walk the entire 24 hours but I am just walking 2-3 hours.

Oh Sorry! What type of compession sleeves are you looking at? For your legs or you arms? I got a junk email from the NY Marathon about some they are selling and they have reflective stuff on the sides. I know the past couple expos I have been at they have had a couple of booths with different compression companies. If you have an expo soon or a race near you, you could always go stuff out there! I've seen a lot more people wearing those during races. If they had ones for your hip flexors I would get some, but it would be hard to wear. Not to mention weird looking! :rotfl:

That's interesting about the toenails. I've never had one, but my dad always gets one while training for Boston.

Sorry again for the mix-up!

Kim, no problem!!

I am looking for something to help with shin problems.

Actually, they do make compression shorts specifically for problems with hip flexors, IT band, etc

Here is the website: http://cw-x.com/default.aspx

You can get most of their products at runningwarehouse.com which offers the WISH discount.

I won't be hitting an expo until November, but we have a lot of running stores in our area so I might be touring a few of them over the weekend.

Question for those who run/walk on the outdoors.

Do you guys run in the road or on the sidewalk? If you run on the road, are you worried about getting hit, and can you really tell the difference b/w the 2?

I was talking with my dad this morning, and he runs in the road, and said I should because the road is softer. I get that, but I'm always scared I might get hit. Even wearing reflective gear and a light on my hit there are times I'm crossing the road, and people still won't look. :confused3

I might be an idiot and breaking the rules of the road, but I like to run on the road, opposite of traffic direction so that I can see the cars coming. I just stay very close to the side/sidewalk and pay attention and tend to run in low traffic areas. People do not seem to mind, actually I think it makes them pretty happy to see people out and about exercising :goodvibes

I run a trail that is paved in asphalt. My only worry/agitation are the runners and walkers who feel the need to be on my side of the lane. I stay all the way over to the right and every time I go run there are at least a handful of people walking or running right in my way. Then they look away so I have to be the one to move. Um, hello? This is American, not England.
Good Luck on your 10K Hope the weather stays nice!
Thank you! It's looking like it will be a nice cool morning. :goodvibes
Good luck on your first 10K! :thumbsup2 My first 10K is next month..
Thank you! And good luck on yours!:cheer2:

Going to bed now - need to be up early to eat, stretch, and pick up the people going with me. :faint:

I do a variety. My usual route is half asphalt-paved running/biking trail and half cement sidewalk. I haven't noticed a significant difference between the two. :confused3 I also take some side routes on occasion and go on the road. The problem here is that the roads are slightly graded downward on the sides (what is the word for that?) to help with water run-off since we live at sea level and the water just stands around otherwise. It's a little lop-sided to run on the far side of the road and not safe to run in the middle.

It's funny. When I'm on the sidewalks and paths beside the road, drivers seem aware and courteous. I guess people expect to see people exercising there so it's no big deal. When I'm in the neighborhoods and on the roads with no sidewalks, I have to be very careful. Drivers will actually stare me down even when I have gotten all the way over into the grass on the shoulder of the road and still come as close to hitting me as possible. Why?? I have no idea. They have the entire road and I'm over in the grass. I was actually even pushed into a mailbox once by someone determined not to give me any room. They had their eyes on me the entire time. I seriously don't understand this mentality at all.

Anyway, back to the original question. I've never noticed much difference. The only time I have more trouble is on the less well-paved roads (which we have a lot of here) and the asphalt itself has so much gravel in it that it seems to be 'cobblestoned'. That hurts my feet. I'd much prefer the sidewalk to that!

I also do a variety, altho mostly paved or hard packed trail. I dont do so hot dodging roots and rocks.

For the most part you are supposed to run against traffic, but I really kind of do both. Whichever works out best for my route (if the next turn coming up is a right turn, I'll get myself to the right side of the road, etc). I live near DC and work in DC so there are all the trails and such near the national mall which I run on. Its a mix of asphalt and cement. I dont really notice much of a difference, while as an engineer I know cement is harder than asphalt (in terms of it has less give per unit stress - hardness as a technical term is related more to capability of being scratched), I'm not sure if its actually significant when running. That'd be an interesting study.

This morning I did a hybrid workout on roads and tracks, 2 mile warmup, 3x1 mile repeat with each one being faster, 8x200 meter sprints, 2 mile run back. Good workout. Tomorrow hopefully I'll get in a long run.
