I iz turtle too...not even going to look at the clock for my first half..I just want to finish...I'll try to set a PR on the next one..hahaha

-DB

well hey there crush! you and i are so similar - SLOOOWWWW!!

you're right - this race for me is just about finishing it, about accomplishing something i never thought i'd do. that, and not getting swept!

Turle here to. Monday's 2 mile run was in 30 mins. And that was on a treadmill trying to go fast...

Hey the turtle beat the rabbit right?

LEIGH!! Oh my goodness!!! I clicked on the Disney store website to look at the "in-training" tee-shirts and they now have collegiate shirts!! It has the classic Mickey with his hands in his pockets and then the school and the school logo. They have Florida. I am tempted to buy the LSU one, but have to think about it. I love Disney, but don't really wear it outside of Disneyland. But I will be in DL on Saturday for the 1st game of the season so I could wear it there...

Sorry! I got excited and had to share it with you. :goodvibes

You guys are so funny! I was so proud of myself because I sped up today and did 2.2 miles in 30 minutes. Then I come here and everyone had that exact time/distance and is talking about how slow they are! :rotfl: Everything is so relative!

I was noticing the same thing! :rotfl2: That happens with me and my dad. I'm really slow and run/walk and he's fast and just runs. I've been training for my marathon and my runs take forever. He goes a month and a half without running and can kick out a 6 or 7 miler in like 45-50 minutes, and it's like no problem. If only I could have his legs for one race, I would be happy! :cloud9:

Nice to "meet" you Jenn! :)

I will get the sleeves tomorrow, can't wait!

I haven't run at all since Aug 1. I really need to try out a short run and see how my shin holds up. It still hurts a little even just walking around, so I am somewhat afraid.

When I trained for my first half I went to 11.5 miles. The 2nd, I went to 14.

My running group has a base mileage of 10 miles every Sat, and you can add on from there. They recommend going to 12 and then 14 a few weeks before each half.

However, a lot of programs stop at 10.

Well - what do you think of the sleeves???

Well - what do you think of the sleeves???

I got them today, but they are too big. :(

I got the L/XL as my calf measured at 14.8" and I am 5'8". They were a bit too long but I thought I would see what happened... wore one to wal-mart on a shopping trip, and it was practically falling down. I couldn't even tell it was there under my jeans.

So, back to running warehouse in exchange for a smaller size. Yay for free return shipping!

Today I ordered my compresison sleeves.. yay! They should be here Friday... How quick! Registered for an 8K which is 9/25. AND ran 2 miles.... was disappointed in myself today but I think I overdid it this past weekend when I ran 5 miles in two days. I will rest tomorrow and then try again Friday. We'll see. I hate when this happens because then I get all paranoid that I'll never be able to finish even though I know I can. I guess training is full of ups and downs. Hopefully if my sleeves come I can test them out and my legs will feel better!

Any ideas for cross training?

Meredith- you are FASTER than me lol... You are right about it all being relative though! I am just trying to keep my spirits up and determination going and see where the chips fall in feb! (Hopefully a bit faster than those sweepers)...

Oh trust me...that is not my normal speed. :) I'm usually between 15-16 min/mi and honestly closer to 16. Especially on my weekend long distances. I honestly can't say if I'll beat the sweepers or not. I'm trying to figure out if I can do the first mile like I did at lunch today to give myself a few minutes' cushion. But, I was worn out after that, so it'll probably do me more harm than good to try that during a Half. I'm still working on my strategy. :lmao:

i'm starting to get a little worried about the princess half. i ran 2 miles yesterday and felt like dying afterwards. i'm doing my weekday runs with a jogger and it's tiring me out so fast :( that being said, my weekend runs have only been as long as 4.6 miles and that was only once. i'm taking a rest day today as i've run 2 or 3 miles every day for the last 4 days and my knees and shins are sore.

how am i going to get up to 13.1?? i feel like there is so much information you need to know about running just to run. it's crazy. gear, diet, water. i still can't figure out a straight answer on what i should be eating and when!

sorry, stop whining nancy. you're being a baby!

I will admit, it's intimidating. Don't worry. You'll get there. The key, IMO, is just sticking with it. You can go from 4.6 miles to 10 miles pretty quickly (at least I did, and I was completely a couch potato!). I still need to break that 10 mile barrier, but that is next on my list. Just increase it a mile at a time and you can definitely do the distance.

I'm still working on the speed, so I can't be of much help there.

Dont worry, you still have quite a few months until the Princess Half (end of Feb correct me if I'm wrong - being a guy its one of the few races I dont automatically try to fit in). Most half marathon plans wont have you hitting 10 miles until 2 weeks before the race.

If you're knees and shins are sore shorten your stride a little, you want to make sure your foot is coming down underneath or very slightly ahead of you, not stretching forward like you would when walking. This will drastically reduce the load you feel, and will also probably make running feel easier. You also might end up running faster without even knowing it.

At the distances you're at now, you dont need to worry about much, just stay hydrated (a couple sips every 15-20 minutes or so should be fine unless its in the 80s/90s or is really humid). Wear clothing that you find comfortable. I prefer the technical fabrics, but I often run shirtless down to like 40 degrees. I also run in cotton socks most of the time (but I do def appreciate the more technical socks - esp the double layered ones).

Also stop and think real quick. You ran 4.6 miles, and are running 2 or 3 miles a day. A very large number of people can't accomplish that right now. I still remember when I was in HS and a mile was an almost insurmountable task. 2 miles was damn near impossible. I thought that first 5k would kill me. You've already gone way past that.

I KNOW! I did see them!! I may have to break down and get one.. I already have my Gator gear package being sent up from my mom (she lives in Florida) :lmao: Gotta get near shirts for us and the kids each year...;)

You will do GREAT! And like Matt said.. look how much you are already running now! You have so much time to get up to 13.1! ;):thumbsup2

That is so cool, you're so lucky! I don't have anyone in LA, so I have to get stuff online. The problem I have is that I am so incredibly superstitious I don't know if I could bring myself to wear the shirt on game days. I'm pretty bad about that stuff. I have to wear the LSU Football shirt on game day, but have to take it off before game time, and I have to tape the games, I can't watch them. If I do they lose! :sad1: Last year I was in Long Beach for the FL game and all the restaurants had it on and they lost, Ole Miss game I got cocky and watched the last 3 minutes, b/c they were going to score and win, and Miles screws it up and they lose! Penn State, I was watching and they were losing, stopped and they started coming back! I guess I could wear it nongame days. Sorry, I'm rambling...

Anyways, 4 miler was awful this morning! It felt like I had not run in weeks! Plus, the past couple of runs, I have been having problems with my hip flexor. Tomorrow is a clean slate though for my lovely 4:30 am 10-12 miler.

Hopefully!

I agree with what Matt and others have said! You have plenty of time to get your mileage up for Princess. Once your body gets used to the longer miles, the shorter runs will get even stronger. I did a 1/2 in June and then started training for my full at the end of June. I had another 1/2 at the end of July and could already tell the difference b/c I was running more.

It takes time, but you'll do it! Don't worry! :dance3: Besides, you'll have all the wishers running with you to cheer you on! :goodvibes

Well I agreed with some others on the thread for the wine and dine half that I am doing VERY soon  We will just be fashionably late to the party :rotfl: Today was a great day for a run, not too hot out :thumbsup2 Though the scale keeps creeping up on me...i blame it on freak scale malfunction :rotfl2:

Does anyone use any sort of belt pack that can hold thinks such as a cell phone, etc? I am trying to find one that i can potentially hold a cell phone, maybe small camera, and hopefully has a place for small water bottle even. I want it all haha

I use a Nathan fuel belt. It has 4 10oz bottles, but unless it's a long run, I don't use all the bottles or not fill them up all the way. It has a net pocket on the front with 2 spaces so you can put goo, or maybe a slim camera/cellphone :goodvibes, in it. In the back there is another pocket, but that one is skinny for ids, $ or whatever. I saw one at an expo last month that is just a belt, don't think there was a bottle holder, and it expands or stays skinny and you can fit a bunch in there. They were selling them for like $20. I think they might advertise them in the back of Runner's World.
