Wisdom teeth info please

:thumbsup2 Well, she made it through! It seems that her top right tooth was really up in there. She is gonna have some pain later!!
She is sleeping and I go up and help her change the gauze pads every half hour. She is doing okay...the nurse suggested that she put on a hoodie with the ice packs on both sides of her face, then pull the drawstrings tight.
It is working well!

unfortunately, my eight year old son is home too. He is sick! It never fails...so I am running in between the two of them, plus trying to get stuff done around here!!!
Better get off the computer and check on the kids!

Thanks for your help everyone!
Lisa :worship:

I am 21 and I got my wisdom teeth out on December 20th, just two months ago. It was a very successful surgery, I never had to apply ice on my cheeks, the swelling wasn't too bad, and I even went to go watch a movie & go shopping the next day (although I was in pain).

The most trouble I had with my experience was with eating - I had no problems with my appetite, but there was a very limited amount of foods that I could eat, since my jaw was so stiff and I couldn't open my mouth wide. I loved my mom's smoothies. I also had a lot of oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and applesauce.

Note to anyone who is getting their wisdom teeth out: if your oral surgeon prescribes you Hydrocodone for pain, make sure you take a half tablet at first and always with food! This stuff is strong and I took a whole tablet with food and I felt a bit queasy.

I hope your daughter's recovery goes well! Hope that your son gets better too.

:grouphug: to your daughter. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

I'd be interested in any updates you post because my DD15 has to have her wisdom teeth out very soon. Her dentist is recommending that all four wisdom teeth be extracted as soon as possible. She has no room for the top two to come in, and the bottom two are growing sideways under her gums. We have a consultation with the oral surgeon a week from today.

I'm nervous about the procedure and how long it will take for her to recover from it. Thanks for any updates you can post. :)

Yep big  for your DD.

Two of my WD are coming through right now and, while not painful, they are not coming through right. One is coming through angling inwards and the other is right up against the tooth next to it. I have a dentist appointment late next month so I'll just have to see what my dentist says.

I also have a tooth just inside my teeth on the bottom left-hand side of my mouth (definitely overcrowded in there!).. that's probably not helping matters!

And remember, no sucking! I had a tooth out when I was little and sucked and the clotted blood just pulled away and I swallowed it.. :scared:

I just had all four of my wisdom teeth out this past monday. The surgery wasn't all that bad, and I wasn't in that much pain the day after. (well, I was on lost of percocent and pain killers... lol)

But yeah. It's four days later, and I really still haven't been able to eat solid foods like chicken or stuff like that. My diet has consisted of soup, mac & cheese, pancakes, yogurt, ice cream, and scrambled eggs. Yeah, not to thrilling. How I want normal food. lol

It hurts still a bit, but I'm off the percocet, and now am just taking Advil ever so often. It's really not that bad. :)

i hope your DD is doing well and has a good recovery. i had all 4 of mine taken out four years ago. the anesthesia is what got me the most. i'm really sensitive to that stuff. the top two of mine were grown in completly, but there wasn't a whole lot of room for them and they were aggrevating my sinus so we opted to take them out. the bottom two were partially impacted. i ended up with a bruise and a split on my lip, as well as minor nerve damage to my lip (my surgeon said it isn't that uncommon when the teeth are right on top of a nerve like my bottom ones were) that cleared up in about three months. i took the Rx pain meds that included an anti-emetic for the first three days, but it was knocking me out (again i'm really sensitive to these kinds of things) so by the fourth day i was taking tylenol every four to six hours. and by the fourth day i was able to eat solid foods. for the first few days i put most everything in a blender and drank it. that was a little strange. blenderized cereal and other foods that have liquid are not something you should try if you don't have to.

I had 9 taken out at once-they found "mini" teeth impacted that the surgeon said about 1 in 100 people get. All I remember is I threw up blood in the driveway of my home and I bled for several days. If I recall, it really was about 2 weeks before I felt well again. I was 24 when they came out.

I had mine when I was 18 and it was a breeze for me. I looked like someone had beat me because 1 was difficult to get out but I was fine. I also did all 4 at once. Everyone does have a different reaction though. I ate a lot of ice cream, yogurt, and soup.

Thanks for all the :grouphug:'s and good wishes.
I have to work this morning, so I just went up to check on her.
She slept all night, so I got new ice packs and more pain meds for her.
She said it was hurting a bit this morning. She was able to eat mashed potatoes and applesauce last night.
Her face looks a little puffy this morning. Will let you know if she is all black and blue by the time I get home. She is only taking 1/2 tablet of the pain meds.
A friend of ours suggested keeping the ice packs on as long as possible to keep the swelling down.
Since that upper right wisdom tooth did not want to come out, I think it's a good idea that we are keeping the ice on it.

For luvflorida...if you have any questions just pm me. There really was not much for me to do. I just waited in the waiting room for a little over an hour, got instructions from the nurse and then took my DD home.
Hopefully, your DD will have no problems.

I had 4 impacted ones removed at the same time....worse decision I ever made!!!! I should have done 2 and then 2 another time. I had it done in a hospital under general anesthesia...I will not let them put me under general anesthesia in a Dentist office ever! I think the pain form that was 10 times worse than when I had a c-section. I couldn't eat for days and it took almost 2 months before I could open my mouth normally. I missed about 10 days of work from it! I actually have a pretty high pain threshold too...I was out in the mall the day I got home from the hospital from having a c-section!!

The above is good advice.

Ours had it done in the DDS office too (an ORAL SURGEONS offc) fainted in the parking lot, we could barely get into the car, slept way too long - possibly due to TOO much anesthesia??

Hindsight being 20/20, i don't know why DDS do it in the office, then don't provide wheelchairs or assistance OR just let the patient stay in the office a bit longer!!? And this is in a very nice, upscale area with state of the art physicians etc.

I also agree with the above poster, aprilgail -- regardless of pain thresholds, Oral Surgery is in a league of its own, and its often not pretty.

Best wishes to all who must encounter this surgery!

How is your daughter doing today? Hope she's on her way to feeling back to normal. Sometimes it takes a full week after having those impacted teeth out befor some can be up and around doing day to day activities. :grouphug:

DD is hanging in there. She ate some ice cream last night. She was so happy...that helped numb her mouth more and her throat has been sore.
So, the ice cream helped with her throat too.
She is not awake yet, so I am not sure how her face is doing.
Her right side is definately more swollen than the left.

I agree with another poster about having it done at a DDS office.
I would never do that. If at all possible go to an oral surgeon.
A co worker of mine had it done last year at the dentist. We assumed she was going to an oral surgeon....not the case and she still has nightmares about it.
She kept pleading with me to make sure my DD had medication and ice, etc, etc. I guess it's a good thing our DD still lives at home so we can help take care of her when stuff like this happens.

Thanks...

Yikes, this thread is starting to scare me! Glad to hear that your daughter is feeling better. I sent you a PM. Thanks!

To clarify my recent post, i also meant an Oral Surgeon, who is also considered a DDS. What i question is their after-care policies. Regardless of their seemingly state-of-art facility and upscale locale, i still think they send patients home too soon. Way too soon.

Glad your dd is doing better!
