My DD, 20, is having her wisdom teeth (all 4) taken out this Friday.
Luckily, her college classes are on Tue and Thurs!

If your child has had them out what is the best way to take care of her?

What foods were your kids able to eat and keep down?

Thanks
Lisa

First rule is no sucking through a straw!! So, whatever you give your DD, make sure there aren't any straws invovled!

I had my Wisdom's out 12 yrs. ago (approx) and remember being able to eat anything smooth -- applesauce, instant mashed potatoes/whipped potatoes, yogurt (vanilla or w/o fruit pieces), pudding, broth, milkshakes ... things w/o chunks. I was able to keep everything down w/o a problem ... and I'm the type of person who easily gets sick esp. after surgery.

I had the "twilight" anesthesia and felt fine after it wore off. I wasn't in much pain -- mainly, my jaw was just sore and I looked like a chipmunk w/bruises around my jawline. I don't think I had any bruises around my eyes, though. I know that, when I was done, we went to the McDonald's across the way and I drank a soda from the cup. The senior citizens there must have been familiar w/the oral surgeon, b/c they asked if Dr. X got his hands on me, too! They were cute!!! I do remember going shopping a few hours after the anesthesia wore off!

Looking back, it wasn't the worst thing I had to endure! The appendectomy was tougher! Good luck to your DD. She'll be more sore (and worried about her chipmunk cheeks) than anything else!

I had mine pulled a few years ago and it really wasn't bad. I know that we had a good stock of pudding, jello, and popsicles on hand since my sister had all hers done at the same time. Honestly, besides not being able to eat spicy foods, I was back to work and to normal foods within a day and a half. I think it all depends on your reaction to the pain meds (which I think I was told to take with milk instead of water)

Everyone is different and it also depends on how "difficult" the teeth are to remove (some come out easily, some not). I remember when my sis had hers removed that she had no reaction to meds, had no swelling, never got sick!

Each person is different and has a different tolerance.

Mine (at 19) were no big deal, not impacted just a standard removal. I took 2 vicadin the first night as I was tired and worried about pain. (Never had any pain but wanted to make sure I didnt type of thing as I was going away for the weekend with the boyfriend.) I had soft pasta, jello, pudding the like. Hope all goes well.

I had mine pulled when I was in college. I remember that my lips were really dry after the procedure and we had to stop and get Chapstick. You might want to have some of that on hand in case she needs it.

I hope that she has a quick recovery!

Thanks for the info! I will go to the store on Wed, my day off and stock up on all soft things!!
My daughter has a problem with needles. I think that will bother her more than the pain!
I have to work on Saturday morning and my DH and sons will be camping with Boy Scouts. So, Brianna, will have some quiet time.

Thanks everyone! :worship:

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 25. I actually had five removed--one was pulled; the rest were impacted and had to be cut out. I had general anesthia (sp) and wonder if this didn't make my recovery worse.

I ate milkshakes, and mashed potatoes, when I felt like eating. I popped pain meds (and I am not a med taker). I recovered much more quickly from my DD's birth than from my wisdom teeth.

Now that I have been so "cheery" , good luck with you DD.

Another thing I remembered - the dentist told me to bring a cd player and headphones and use it during the procedure. I had the gas and IV so all I remember is the first song and then waking up and it was all over, but I do think it did help

Can't tell you anything about the first 4 days after my procedure. I was in the hospital (general anesthesia) that long and didn't do well at all. Even after going home I had a hard time and the pain was difficult to control. On the other hand, a friend had the same procedure done (all 4 wisdom teeth, same oral surgeon) on the same day and she breezed through it. You just never know. On the other hand, I had my spine opened up for a very complicated surgery and had no problems with pain and recovery. Go figure!

I was your daughter's age when I had mine out, I had IV sedation.

My mom plied me with my Mepergan every 4-6 hours for three days straight, and made me homemade potato soup and jello the first night. I did very well, I was at the mall the next day shopping, and actually went out for New Years Eve the night after that (and smoked and drank through a straw, which is a BIG no-no, I got lucky).

I really dreaded getting my wisdom teeth out, I had heard horror stories. But I really didn't have any problems at all. I had been looking forward to losing a couple of pounds, but instead gained a couple due to the good food mom made me! My oral surgeon called me his poster child.

My 16 DD had her wisdom teeth out right after Christmas. She had smoothies from Jamba Juice and lots of Raman. She is a very picky eater so she wouldn't eat the usuals of applesauce, pudding, bananas...Remember no straws so she ate her smoothies with a spoon.

She was doing really well within about 48 hours. She is super sensitive to pain but she did great. I was so proud of her. Also she got some pretty good meds to take the edge off.

Just be ready to play nurse for a day or so.

Good Luck

I had mine out 3 years ago (22 yrs old). I had all 4 out and 2 of them were impacted. They put me under for the procedure and I came out fine. I had ice strapped to my face for most of the day to prevent swelling which was key. No swelling for me or getting sick. I mostly ate jello and pudding.

The worst part for me was the following Sunday was the Super Bowl and I couldn't eat anything fun at the party! :rotfl: Plus getting food stuck in those holes was not pretty either :rotfl2:

Hope everything goes well! pixiedust: :goodvibes

Thanks for all the help!
My DD is not too great with pain after a surgery but with the meds I am sure she will do fine.
When she got home from work today she said she could not wait to get those teeth out.
She hass 3 impacted and they are really bothering her.

Me, too! :rolleyes2

To the OP: There's just no way to know what reaction to expect, as everyone is so different. Good luck to your DD!

I did get nauseous after my procedure, make sure the dr. writes your a prescription for Compazine (sp?), because getting sick hurt worse than getting them out. I slept for most of the rest day and the next day I took a few pain pills....Good luck to your DD :grouphug:

I had a horrible time with my wisdom teeth extractions, but I did it as an old woman (32 years old). But I had 8 teeth removed at once (4 premolars too, to get ready for braces) so that probably made me far sicker than the average person! 2 of my wisdoms were completely impacted, and two were partially poking though. The surgery itself went fine. But afterwards I was non-functional for about five days (in bed for two), and it really took two full weeks to feel alright again. I also had a dry socket, nerve damage, and two holes between my mouth and sinuses. I hated the Vicoden so I quit taking it. I had only novacane, no IV sedation since it was alot cheaper. My nerve damage started healing two months later.

Well, I guess that was a worst-case senario! Sorry to be so grim but it can be rocky, but gets better! Wishing her the best of luck!! :teeth:

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time a long time ago. At least 2 were impacted. I did it with only the local anesthetic (which made the oral surgeon more nervous than me - he said he was quite sure he would have to give me IV Valium during the procedure once he started. I said if he had to, then he did, but I didn't want it to start with. I ended up not needing any - to his great amazement).
Anyway, one of the things I was told was to keep ice packs on for 1/2 hour each side. A friend who was a dental hygenist, said most people would alternate sides, but she suggested doing ice on both sides at the same time. That took more ice packs, but it also meant I had 1/2 hour "off" at a time where I didn't have to worry about icing anything.

I had 4 impacted ones removed at the same time....worse decision I ever made!!!! I should have done 2 and then 2 another time. I had it done in a hospital under general anesthesia...I will not let them put me under general anesthesia in a Dentist office ever! I think the pain form that was 10 times worse than when I had a c-section. I couldn't eat for days and it took almost 2 months before I could open my mouth normally. I missed about 10 days of work from it! I actually have a pretty high pain threshold too...I was out in the mall the day I got home from the hospital from having a c-section!!

I was 19 when I had mine removed. For the most part, it was a BREEZE for me. I was worried since I'd never been put to sleep before and that's a pretty scary concept (Not to mention the fact that they left me alone and wouldn't let my parents wait with me in a freezing room for nearly an hour-my parents would have left before they started surgery). After it was over though, I was pretty good. I don't remember much, but I remember talking like CRAZY. Oh...and they told me they gave me 3 IV drugs. The first was to make me "happy." It MAJORLY ticked me off. Who knows, but the surgeon said it was the strangest thing he'd ever seen.

I had no pain until about the 3rd day when ALL of my IV wore off (they ODed me-Oops.) I ate a lot of broth. I developed a taste for it. I had no swelling or bruising at all. When my holes finally closed up though, it was fine. The holes are annoying.

A minor warning-the swelling of my adenoids and tonsils lasted about a week and a half. The blood that normally leaks out during the first night didn't. I never saw any blood. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling ill and found it a week and a half after. I was SO scared-called my parents from college at 2am, called into work, thought for sure something was seriously wrong. The oral surgeon said that happens sometimes though.
