Thought it is interesting that VB & HH are now offering FREE wireless access in common areas. I am wondering if that is a sign of things to come in WDW. Anyone heard anything?

I'm pretty sure that Big Murgie's Den is also. Every evening when I was down there, I'd see one or more people on their laptops. I overheard the front-desk CM tell one of the guests the locations-I think the other ones are the Beach House and near Community Hall.

And I've heard rumors that villas near those locations can sometimes pick up a weak signal.

We were in building 15 last month -- my daughter found that if she put her computer near the front window of the second bedroom, she was sometimes able to pick up a weak signal. It wasn't the Disney WiFi network, though, so it must have been something coming from Shelter Cove.

Hopefully some day, we'll have wireless in the villas.... :thumbsup2

I was able to logon at BWV in my room in October. I didn't know that they offered Wireless there, but I was able to get it the whole time I was there....

Oh, I was in a boardwalk view room if that matters.

Free or for the $9.95 a night?

The recent issue of Vacation Magic mentions that there are now free wifi hotspots at both Hilton Head and Vero.

Chances are someone else near you at the resort was paying the $9.99 per day fee and had hooked-up their own wi-fi router so that they could work wirelessly throughout their room. As long as they left the access point unsecured, anyone in the immediate vicinity would have been able to share.

About 1 1/2 - 2 years ago Disney signed what I have heard was a 5-year contract to outsource the Internet services at WDW. The contract probably enabled Disney to defer much of the installation costs of retrofitting all of the guest rooms for wired high-speed access. In return the vendor expects to see revenues for every user of the system to cover their tech support, hardware and maintainance costs.

Free access over the duration of this contract is probably out of the question. Reduced cost access may be possible (if Disney were willing to forfeit most or all of it's 'take' for each user), but I suspect it's a situation where they would like to keep the dissatisfaction at a dull roar for a couple of years while the contract runs its course. The most popular response to any inquiries will probably be "we're looking into it."

We were at HHI over thanksgiving weekend in Live Oak Lodge. Our studio was a floor above Big Murggie's Den. We could get a weak signal from the Disney Wi-Fi in our studio from time to time but not strong enough to surf with. The hotspots @ HHI are Big Murggie's Den, the Beach House, and Community Hall. We have a 2BR BW view @ BWV reserved for April and will try to connect with Disney Wi-Fi there. Hopefully we can connect that way and not have to pay the $9.95/24 hrs. :surfweb:

I was in room 5041 when I got the free wi fi. I was there last weekend in room 5001 but I did not bring my laptop. We will be there again in January and I will have my laptop then, so I will report back. I remember I had to click something that said "connect to internet" and it was not disney's high speed. I know because my wireless assistant found me a couple of choices - one of which was disney's and required a security key.
