Winter Resorts in Northeast

Can anyone recommend a nice resort in the Northeast for our Christmas vacation this year that is part of our DVC membership? We'd try to try that for once but would love to hear recommendations from anyone here....

Ok, I know you said Northeast, well this is Northeast, but in Canada. My DH and I just went to Mount Tremblant this past winter and it was great. We didn't stay at Club Intrawest, but I heard the places were very nice. The skiing there is great. We are from Massachusetts and ski Maine and NH all the time. The skiing doesn't compare to there. It was well worth the trip. For us it only took us about 6-6.5 hours to drive. That is nothing. We drive to Atlantic City and it takes us that long. Next winter we are going to use our DVC points and stay at Club Intrawest at Whistler. I can't wait!! You just get more for your money by going to Canada!

Mont Tremblant has a very nice village at the base of the mountain to walk around. They have some excellent restaurants and shops. The food can be expensive, but isn't everything these days.

Now, if you are talking NH - I've skied probably every mountain.
So lets see, Waterville Valley ski area is for families. Very nice area and the places are nice to stay - I saw that the Inns of Waterville Valley are on there.

Now Loon is a nice place too. Probably a more challenging mountain than Waterville. Also nice for families though. I love the area around there too.

And Vermont - Sugarbush - I have a friend who is in a ski club for that mountain and she LOVES it. I have never been there, but from what I here lots of challenging skiing and a great place to go. Not sure of what is around there though.

Oh and by the way, we have opted for our ski vacations now to Canada because you just never know if here in New England if we are going to have snow....and the places here are very expensive. But when using points, it makes a huge difference!

Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont says "Christmas", especially if you want to ski. There is cross-country skiing right at the resort and Stowe is a short drive away. Topnotch at Stowe would be another option as well.

Of course, Christmas Week is primetime for these resorts so I'm not sure how easy it would be to arrange a trade. You never know until you try.

A word to the wise if you are thinking about ski vacations during Christmas. They are worse than WDW at Christmas for vacations as far as crowds are concerned. You can not find a seat in the lodge, long lines to grab something to eat, and lines beyond belief to get on the lifts. That is their prime time that week. If you are thinking of going without skiing then it may not be too bad, just learn to zig while others are zagging or skiing. I spent 20 years of my life at ski resorts trust me on this one. Think of a can of sardines, that will give you the visual.

One resort you might consider, that might be a little unusual would be the Wellington in Newport, RI. It's a nice facility and quite comfortable all in all. Plus you have a number of local attractions like all the amazing Mansions of Newport in their Christmas finery ready for touring. (We especially liked Chateau sur Mer, the Elms, the Breakers and Marble House and plenty more, at this time... now lets see, that's a Wetmore and more Rockefellers than I can count right now...).

Most of the nice restaurants are open at this time of year too. It's really a lovely time of year to be in Newport.

Moosehead Cottages in Maine are nice. They are an option for trade.

We stayed at the Sagamore on lake george last presidents day break & loved it. They had the winter carnival going on at that time,races on the lake,snowmobiling, could even drive your car on the lake!! Was kinda wierd driving on the lake that i waterski on in the summer... Skiing at Gore Mtn. was great. Not sure if anything special going on at the lake for christmas but winter carnival time is a blast.
